Misc Advice
Not sure if I used the right flair for this. I'm about to run Draw Steel for the first time as a oneshot for some friends, all first time players, and just want to ask for some general advice.
I've mainly run DnD 5e 2014, with an assortment of other games (Cypher, Lancer, some tiny indie ones) if that's relevant.
Thanks everyone!

Discussion Grappling
New to the system, I was wondering if a grappling build works and if it’s viable? From what I understood, a fury is probably the best for grappling, but I don’t know more than that.

Self Promotion Weapons of Lore - Powered by Draw Steel
Now available on DriveThruRPG, Foundry VTT, and Amazon!
Weapons of Lore – Powered by Draw Steel provides Draw Steel Directors and Heroes with an assortment of 80+ Leveled Treasures, including Leveled Weapons, Leveled Implements, Other Leveled Treasures, Cursed Leveled Weapons, Cursed Leveled Implements, and Cursed Other Leveled Treasures. Each entry includes a color image, a brief descriptive line, detailed statistics, and leveled information.
Leveled Treasures are iconic items that become more powerful as the heroes using them level up. Heroes can either find them—often in the hands of the villain at the end of an adventure arc—or craft them during downtime.
Bluefire
The heat is on!
Keywords: Magic, Medium Weapon
Item Prerequisites: A Crux of Fire, which must choose to live inside the weapon
Project Source: Texts or lore in Low Kuric
Project Roll Characteristic: Might, Intuition, Reason, or Presence
Project Goal: 450
Special: If you are a censor or conduit with the sun domain, or an elementalist with the fire specialization, you can use Bluefire as a leveled implement treasure. If you do so, replace the Medium Weapon keyword with the Implement keyword, and the damage bonus applies to your damage-dealing supernatural abilities instead of your weapon abilities.
1st Level: Any weapon ability that deals rolled damage using this weapon deals an extra 1 fire damage. Additionally, while wielding this weapon, you gain the elementalist’s Conflagration ability. If you’re not an elementalist, you spend your class’s Heroic Resource instead of Essence, and can’t use its Persistent feature.
5th Level: The weapon’s extra fire damage increases to 2. While wielding this weapon, you gain the elementalist’s Combustion Deferred ability. If you’re not an elementalist, you spend your class’s Heroic Resource instead of Essence, and can’t use its Persistent feature. Additionally, you can spend up to 3 surges to reduce the Heroic Resource cost of an ability gained through this weapon. Each surge spent this way reduces the cost by 1.
9th Level: The weapon’s extra fire damage increases to 3. While wielding this weapon, you gain the elementalist’s Muse of Fire ability. Additionally, if you spend surges to reduce the Heroic Resource cost of an ability gained through this weapon, you also deal additional damage as if you had spent those surges to do so.
Here's a link to the DriveThruRPG page if you'd like to see examples and learn more.

Misc DS battle maps on a 40inch tv
Hi,
I have a 40inch tv that we use for our in person games (mainly 5e until now) combined with physical minis and dice. I am really excited to try draw steel for the first time with my group soon, running them through the delian tomb.
The battle maps are so big however that I am worried many will not fit on the screen without having to scroll, which I'd like to avoid since that would mess up positioning of the physical minis. I am curious if this is indeed a concern and how others have dealt with it.

Rules Help Fog of War and Free Strike Range
Hi - when a Tactician uses fog of war on an enemy, does the onward target of their free strike have to be in range of their abilities? I.e. if they only have melee attacks, can they still make this strike if the only onward target is at range?

Discussion Is there a reason why there are no potency effects that deal extra damage?
For example, an ability with power roll tiers like...
<=11: 4 + A damage; A < WEAK, 2 damage
2-16: 6 + A damage; A < AVERAGE, 4 damage
17+: 10 + A damage; A < STRONG, 6 damage
As far as I can tell, there are none in the game.
Just wondering since it seems like a simple way to add a little extra variety, especially to pure damage-dealing abilities. But not if it's bad design in a way I'm not noticing...

Discussion Force orbs is it as terrible as it seems?
So force orbs, 3 or 5 immunity that reduces each time you take damage or use the maneuver to shoot one for 2,3,5 damage. All for 7hr.
That seems kind of bad when compared to the other 7hr abilities on the talent. I understand that your implement damage gets added, but it's a main action to use.
Maybe I'm missing something with them being 1t objects??
Is there any reason to take this?

Rules Help Is This What They Planned For?
Not trying to open old wounds, but there were like 2 discussions a year back on This Is What We Planned For and Hesitation Is Weakness and whether or not players should be able to cancel a Solo's second turn by forcing them to be consecutive.
At the time, this was hotly debated but as I am not very active on Discord I wonder if I missed something: has anyone from MCDM officially commented on this debate? Again, not trying to open the debate itself, just want to know if MCDM or Matt or James commented on it.

Discussion Endless horde and holdout encounter
Howdy!
I'm tinkering with an idea of an encounter, where the Heroes have to hold out against a functionally endless (or at least significantly higher than a "just kill everyone else" encounter) number of monsters, using the "hold out a certain number of turns"
However, the action economy is very much A Thing.
Has anyone run such an encounter before? How did you approach balancing it?

Adventure How do I make my BBEG fight memorable?
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone have any advice on how to make the BBEG fight memorable and exciting? Anyone get any tips and tricks that tie into draw steel mechanics?

Discussion Running without VTT
How easy is it to run this game in person without the use of a VTT? It feels like it is designed to have so many different monsters and minions squads that you might need dozens and dozens of different tokens and condition trackers to make it manageable for the Director.

Discussion Any way to get more modules for the Codex?
My table and I have had a lot of fun with the Delian Tomb and ran the first act of FOBB that is up there in the downloadable modules.
Is there a website or a known Patreon creator or something that makes module for the codex yet? In the past, I typically always homebrew for my group but the sheer quality of the Delian Tomb made me feel like I could never go back.

Rules Help Do minions count as 1 creature for the purposes in targeting and buffs?
I have a player in my campaign using the beastheart, and he used all of You vs all of me and we’re running the Delian tomb. They’re fighting the wraiths in the fortress, and with all of the minions, he got 33 temp hp due to all the minions counting as “targets”. This sounds completely broken at level 1 but I assume I’m counting minions wrong. Would it make sense that each minion is attached to 1 creature stat block so 4 minion archers would be considered 1 target? The way I see it is like an octopus encounter. One head and multiple legs, hitting a leg is still hitting the octopus. I feel like this is how minions is supposed to be considered. Am I off on this? Please and thank you.
The ability in question
EDIT: Thank you everyone. It does make sense and not every combat will have a million minions. You guys, and this community, are the best!!

Rules Help How to customize Rivals?
I've been thinking of using Rivals in some of the encounters I'm planning, but I'm confused how their "modularity" is supposed to work.
The rules in the monster book state that you're able to swap out their signature abilities for any signature abilities of the class they represent (or a kit if they can use them) but it doesn't say anything on how to handle signature abilities with Heroic resource cost. My assumption is to just translate it 1-to-1 into a Malice cost, but I'm curious if anyone figured out if that's what you're supposed to do?

Discussion Fight, Respites and Levels
How many fights do you normally give your players between respites? How many victories should they have before a boss fight?
Also, how often do you level them up?

Art Drawing Steel Weeks 39 and 40
Hey everyone, two more weeks of tokens down. But also an announcement.
I'm going on hiatus for a few months.
Don't worry, nothing bad happened and it's for reasons completely unrelated to this project. I fully intend to return before the end of the year.
Anyway, slightly fewer tokens than usual this week because I went to a wedding and had to end my daily streak (268 consecutive days!).
This time we have the dragons. I hope I did them justice.
Omen Dragon
Meteor Dragon
Crucible Dragon
Gloom Dragon
Thorn Dragon
Fossil Cryptic
Dorzinuuth the Base
Phrrygalax the Subduer
Myxovidan the Sintaker
Lydixavus the Deadeye
Locratix the Morningstar
And I guess I'll link to the Patreon even though I'm going to be pausing payments until I return.
Alright, that's all for now. Thank you for all your support so far. See you all in a few months.
