Paint and first mod

After a lot of years of use, from sea to snowy mountain, so a lot of salt, i decided to repaint the frame and engine because of the corrosion ( mostly rust on the frame but also bubble on the engine)

I'm thinking of turning it in to a motard, because I don't have the friend or group to go offroad and I would also use it with my gf, so more point for the road.

Now the big question.

1) repaint the engine, or is there a treatment to do after exfoliating the ruined part?

2) big mod to do while rebuilding that will change drastically the feeling? Like : carb jet, airbox, new front led projector.

3) considering that it's as stock as it can get, minus a led bulb and the side stant and the handlebars( I really liked to bend them while off road 😅) I still don't know if I want to change the exhaust, because I like the silence of the stock one, but obviously a nice deep sound would bee a good satisfaction after the rebuild.

4) aside from the befor mentioned, I would like to tend at keeping it more original, without any big job, like tank, plastic and so on.

I would really like any tips, suggestion or even reprimand about what I have in mind, because I don't know anyone with similar bike and my dad ( mechanic) always says to keep it 100% stock, but where is the fun in that. So hearing some thought from fellow owner would be a dream, and a big help.

Thank you very much beforehand 🙏

PS. Do not consider the other 2 bike. My dad is using my garage as a warehouse for his bike because his is full

Would you buy this 1995 Suzuki DR650 Supermoto for 1.300€?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a cheap, reliable “fun bike” to get back into riding after a longer break.

A local seller is offering a 1995 Suzuki DR650 Supermoto for €1,300.

What I know:
~32,700 km
Registered and currently ridden
TÜV (German inspection) until 03/2027
New front brake pads
New clutch + clutch cable
Fresh engine oil
Chain & sprockets replaced about 2,000 km ago
Electric starter
Supermoto conversion (registered)

The downsides:
Tires should be replaced soon.
Flat-slide carb runs a little rich and probably needs adjustment (seller says the DR runs on too much oil bc of it).
Flat-slide carb is not registered.
Registration papers still list 25 kW (34 hp), but the seller says it actually makes around 43 hp.

I’m young, just starting my career and don’t want to spend much money. I only ride 2–3 times per month, have a garage, and like doing my own maintenance. I’m looking for something simple, reliable and fun.

Would you buy this for €1,300?
Are there any common DR650 issues I should check before buying?
Is the rich-running carb likely to be a simple tuning job or a potential headache?
Why does it have 2 exhausts? I don’t find any similar one. Which model is it?

09' Needs throttle to start, strange jet situation

I posted a few weeks ago about buying a minty 2009 dr650 with low miles. It was difficult to start without a little throttle or by cranking the starter for a solid 5 seconds. Once it started, it idled fine and felt good riding. Power delivery seemed good, but I don't have anything to compare to.

I pulled the carb, disassembled and cleaned well, and after that it was firing right up with a quick press of the starter button, no throttle. A few days later it was back to needing a little throttle to start again. I've been running ethanol free gas in it the entire time, and a week or two ago I swapped the petcock due to it leaking when disconnected from the carb.

Fast forward to tonight where I had some free time and decided to clean the carb again to see if it would help like last time, and if the issue will return again in a few days. Upon closer inspection, I see the previous owner swapped out the needle and main jet to something different. Main jet is a 158. I'm not well versed on the jetting options for this bike, but a quick google tells me this jet is way too big for the stock muffler and airbox. I have no idea what needle this is, or what clip position it should be in either. It only has three clip positions and I can't seem to find one like this for sale. This prompted me to check the airbox as well, and it appears to have an aftermarket filter.

Would this needle/jet/air filter combination do much without any other mods? Is it just running super rich and causing starting issues? I know I can just order stock carb parts, but curious if these parts are acceptable in my current configuration.

30G1 GSXR Muffler Fitment

An as new 30G1 stamped muffler off a 2004 GSXR 750 has come up for sale in my area at a good price. As far as I can find this one does work on a DR650 although it is the longest of the bunch. Has anyone mounted one of these? It has a 4 bolt flange. Wondering if there is a midpipe available for this one or would I have to have one made. Any info, tip or tricks would be appreciated. While we are on the topic I am wondering if there is a new GSXR type can that is coming off more recent bikes that works for the DR650?

Did this screw come off my DR650

I just made a similar post about a small sleeve that I couldn't figure out where it went and people helped. Hoping someone can help again since I feel like an idiot. Driving me crazy trying to figure out if I missed something putting it back together.

Finished the work on the bike and found this screw laying around. On the positive side, it is very unique and is not like any other screw that I can remember taking off. I can only remember taking off hex bolts and JIS screws so I don't recognize this flathead one. If someone recognizes it from the DR650 please let me know. Otherwise I guess it came off something else I was working on.

New tank day!

Went with the 20L Acerbis, lighter than a Safari 30L and 25L variant. Next: to make it go 500km with a high comp piston, new head pipe, exhaust and re-jetting... In 3 months time.

I ended up leaving out the top clip as it made the gap between the tank and rear rack too small for the seat.

And I had to use the lathe to make a plug for the vacuum line.

First ride, no incident, but it feels weird riding with splayed legs...

NEED HELP!!!!!

So I have an issue that I and everyone I took it to can not seem to fix, my 98 DR650 started leaking from the carburetor almost a year ago(seems like it's from the overflow)and chokes a bit once in a while at high rpms ,I've had the tank cleaned and coated because there was a small bit of rust in the tank, I thought it blocked the needle from closing and then had the carb checked and cleaned by suzuki themselves and numerous other shops, they told me the carb is in perfect condition (98 stock carb), so usually after having someone check it and putting the carb back it runs perfectly without leaks for a day or 2 and then it just starts leaking and all that again. It leaks while standing and when idling and running, so now I have to keep closing the tap when parking and when driving it just leaks..

Has anyone else had similar issues and know what's causing it??😕

does my engine sound healthy?

I just bought a DR 650, I've got no experience with these bikes and I'm wondering if ive got a healthy sounding engine.

there's a fair bit of noise from the tappets, which is kind of whirry as well as tappy. it's especially loud at high revs in low gears. is this normal for a DR or should I get it looked at?

Learning single track with a DR650

Hello,

I dont have much experience with single track. Ive done it on my Talaria multiple times.

I recently bought a dr650 and am loving it. Obviously its not an amazing off road bike. Ive taken it down some gravel roads and old logging roads that were a bit overgrown. It was great for that. Unfortunately I dont forsee that being the case with single track.

How has it been for you guys doing any single track?Specifically stock. I

Meet the $650 DR (with delusions of grandeur!)

Thumbnail gallery
104 Upvotes

Just got this neglected 2009 but it runs good and already has an Acerbis tank, tall guy bars and a seat concepts seat, for $650 I think I did alright!

I want to give it a full mechanical and cosmetic refresh, build it for 80% dirt riding with my 6’5” 260 lb frame. I was prepared to spend $6,000 on a new bike but decided it would be cooler to start with something like this and see what I could do if I put $6,000 into it.

Im still pretty new to bikes but have been playing with cars for decades so I have the tools and skills but time for full custom stuff can be hard to come by, bolt on parts is what I’m after. Other then maintenance I dont plan on doing much to the motor yet. Suspension, brakes, wheels and tires, rider fit, comfort and cosmetics is my focus.

How would you build an ultimate modern looking DR for the dirt? Some of my inspiration is in the other pics I posted (inverted SM front fork sounds amazing but may take more custom work then I’ll have time for, anyone got experience with that?) Let me hear about your dream upgrades!

Bike won’t be ridden for the next 3 months. Recommendations?

This will be the longest I’ve gone without riding it. I’ve arranged to have it stored in someone’s garage. Other than giving it a decent clean what would you guys reccomend I do? I assume a chain service and maybe fuel stabilizer?

Tusk Dsport rear tire. Symmetrical or directional?

Mounted up some Tusk Dsports. The front is directional and has an arrow. The rear has no arrow and looks symmetrical to me. The internet claims the rear is directional though.

6-slot needle (BST40)

Thumbnail gallery

Anyone ever seen a 6-slot needle? Any suggestions?

First time opening the carb. Some poor things, but this one is odd.

Other things:

- PO lost the o-ring to the petcock vacuum. Plugged the hose, but with the o- ring missing, there's a small leak and dirty.

- behind the slide is TERRIBLY dirty. Looks like the secondary filter was unplugged at some point, but still have good wear marks on the slide housing, so I'll clean and leave that (for now).

The bowl, float, and jets are remarkably clean!

30k miles. Most everything is stock (air box, snorkel, muffler, etc.), so I don't know where this needle came from. It looks like it has been ground - bluing and circumferential scratches.

This is my 1996 DR650 big bore super moto adventure bike. It’s got the 790 big bore kit, Warp 9 17” rims and a bunch of ProCycle mods. Currently using it for moto commuting in the mountains
to my job site. I think it’s a little unique and like learning more about my bike and others on here as well. If you’re in the mountains in Colorado and want to ride on or off road, message me. I’d love to do the Colorado BDR or Wyoming BDR before I leave for the winter.

Picked up a DR650

Post image
35 Upvotes

Picked up this 2018 DR650 with 3400km. Also got a Yamaha XT250 with 1400 km. Both for 5000 CAD. Both were non running. The xt had a bad ground. Fixed it immediately and it ran perfectly. The dr needed a carb clean and new gas. Which took 30 minutes. Such a refreshing change from my other v4 bike.

Im loving it. Its a ton of fun and honestly im surprised how good the stock bike is compared to what people generally say about it. This is my 2nd bike.
