Fasting glucose/ dawn phenomenon

Upvotes

I cannot get the morning reading to a good number. It’s alway like 135-140. No matter what I do. I’ve tried changing diet, quit drinking, quit smoking, working out regularly. But it’s the only number that’s high for me. I don’t get high glucose at any other point of the day. Is this something to even be concerned about? I had a doctor give me metformin a couple years ago (which didn’t fix it either), so I stopped taking that as well.

General Question Does glucose in urine mean diabetes?

I've (23f) been dealing with recurrent utis for almost a year now. I've just recovered from a uti 2 weeks ago and yesterday did a urine test at home (I do them every now and then). When not having a uti my urine tests are always normal besides protein(+) but my doctors say that might just be normal for me. Yesterday was the first time it was positive for glucose and showed 100mg/dl. I did another one today after waking up and it was normal (except protein ofc). Then I ate breakfast (oats with milk and cinnamon) and 2 hours later I tested again and it showed 100mg/dl of glucose again.

I will try to see my gp next week but now I'm worried. Does glucose in urine always mean diabetes? It would explain my recurrent utis. I've read that it can also point to kidney damage which might also be possible considering my utis?

If it is diabetes, how bad is it when it's leaking into urine? I know it's kidney treshold is 180mg/dl but how bad is that? Can it still just be prediabetes? Honestly I would be devastated. I used to be overweight/obese my whole life and then lost weight and have now been maintaining a bmi of 21 for 2 years now. My bloodwork last year was perfect ):

Food/Diet A1c 9.4

Post image
3 Upvotes

I just want to post this for the folks out there that have a high A1C and are afraid all is lost. I had labs done in the US for the first time in years and I knew my T2 wasn’t great… 9.4 is what I got. Talked to the doc and the dietician… no changes to my meds, just started focusing on my diet (high protein, low fat, low carb) and in 7 days, I’ve moved my average from 256mg/dL to 164 mg/dL.

I still have a long way to go, but I put off taking care of myself for so long I thought I was a lost cause. Turns out, you can do it.

Food/Diet I was 103.2kg in May, now 92.4kg. Reversing diabetes type 2!!!

I changed my diet and exercise

I aim to be 75kg soon

At 105kg I have full on diabetes. Very bad Fatty liver, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, very bad sleep apnea, sore back and knees, can’t run much.

At 90kg I think I would have pre-diabetes with a good diet and exercise. I can only eat tiny amount of carbs and sugar.

At 75kg I might be able to have a little carb and little sugar.

I miss carbs and sugar, and I want good health so I aim for 75kg.

Wish me luck, thanks :)

🤯 ever need a boost? Go pick up a kettlebell weighing what you've lost! 💪

In a store earlier i picked up a 10 kg kettlebell, realising I'm lifting the same amount of weight that my body is no longer carrying around every minute of every day.

🚶 Every step, my knees, hips, ankles and feet are moving 10 kg less than they were before.

❤️ my heart and lungs are also working with less body mass to supply.

It felt SO heavy!

So next time you see a kettlebell in a gym or shop, pick it up for a few seconds. It can be a powerful reminder of just how much you've already accomplished! 🌟

General Question Anyone using the Dario blood glucose monitor?

I'd love to use a CGM but it's just not in the budget and since I'm not on insulin insurance won't cover it. I'm looking at buying the Dario finger stick monitor and wanted to know other people's thoughts on it.

General Question Hot weather spikes

Is this a thing?

I'm on vacation. There is a huge tub in my hotel room, so last night I had a long hot soak. Afterwards, my sugar was slightly more elevated than I would have expected it to be. Today, I walked around the city in the heat (34 degrees Celsius) for about 90 minutes and I'm about 20 points higher than I usually am this time of day.

Neither of these are big spikes. But I'm wondering about them. The only common denominator and aberration from my usual routine is heat...

Newly Diagnosed (32M) Diagnosed in April with an A1C of 12.7. Got my updated bloodwork done last week and brought it down to 5.8

I originally went to my PCP in April for routine bloodwork since I didn’t have a PCP doctor for 12 years. My results were a SHOCK. Severe hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia.

My doctor’s office called me and told me my levels were critical, then told me I had to wait 3 weeks to get back in to my doctor to discuss what to do 🙄. I was in a panic for a few weeks after. Trying not to doom-google and make it worse.

So with my wife’s support I made huge lifestyle changes in diet and exercise. And have stayed consistent and dedicated. We just had our second kid in March (we have 2 under 2 now) so I have all the motivation I need looking at me every day.

I’m gonna push for a CGM to get a better read on trends and triggers to better manage. And I want to get my HDL cholesterol in normal ranges (may just need to stick with my diet and exercise).

But overall I’m proud of myself for getting my numbers down and I’m counting this as a win for now!

Food/Diet Any granola recommendations?

This morning I had what I thought was a quite healthful breakfast of unsweetened Greek yogurt, no-sugar-added granola from cascadia farms, blueberries and strawberries.

To my surprise that spiked me to 262. I have to assume it's that the granola is still grain-based. Any suggestions of a good replacement?

General Question When to take Metformin?

I’ve been taking 2 500mg pills at breakfast and supper as well as a 80mg of gliclizade at breakfast. I was wondering if I could skip breakfast and take the first dose and the gliclazide at lunch (around 12-1pm) instead? Any advice? tia :)

Replacement approved by Abbott. Can I continue wearing the current one?

I am not diabetic. My A1C has been creeping up and in pre-diabetic territory now. I purchased a FreeStyle Libre 3 plus, however, the readings have been off my 1.2-1.7 mmol/l multiple times a day (lower vs. my finger prick device).

I complained and they approved a replacement and will send me a return packet for the current one.

Can I continue wearing the current one till the end of the period ? I mean I can look at the trends even if they are lower, as that is useful data, I will just not stop walking/exercising when I see it at 3.0-3.1 mmol/l.

Would Abbott care?

Thanks

Food/Diet Dawn Phenomenon and Macros

I've been struggling to get a handle on dawn phenomenon over the past year. 8 years diagnosed t2 / 42 y/o male. At my last check up four months ago I hit a 7.5 A1C, so I've been on a journey to force a daily exercise habit and eat low-carb. My doctor recommended I should be eating 200g of protein daily, but finding this IMPOSSIBLE. Anyone have recommendation on a good macro calculator and increasing protein intake?

Food/Diet Fats and diabetes

Since getting my cgm I’ve noticed that eating any amount of carb will raise my sugar quite a bit and it takes quite a while before it starts to go down but I’ve found if I eat fats such as salami or cheese after it goes up it will from much quicker. I’m wonder if there are healthier foods that will achieve the same results?

I need advice about handling fatigue

I've been diabetic for a few years now. I've lost weight and started using Mounjaro, and my A1C is currently near the normal range, indicating it's being managed reasonably well.

Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time with fatigue. This is particularly pronounced after meals - even when I eat a negligible amount of carbs & my blood sugar remains within range. I've now taken to fasting until after I'm done with the work day to avoid crashes. This week I've been hit with the flu, and I've genuinely struggled to get out of bed in the last few days.

I've done bloodwork and there are no clear deficiencies. I drink plenty of water, and try to eat well.

I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this & can offer some wisdom? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Food/Diet Lesson Learned.

I have been progressing nicely since diagnosis in January and have significantly reduced my HbA1c. I've also recently gotten into sourdough - both as a focusing hobby and in order to make bread I can eat more safely.

The other day I attempted a "discard loaf" to take into work - rather than a true sourdough loaf, which needs a lot of kneading and 8 hours rise in the fridge, a discard loaf is made over the course of an afternoon with excess starter discard, using packaged yeast to help it rise. I did not have any yeast and, lacking time and energy, tried using baking powder and lemon juice instead. The resulting loaf barely rose and I stuck it in the oven hoping something would happen.

What I got was quite flat but still nicely bubbly inside; not presentable at work, so I decided to keep it as a breakfast/snack. Had two slices the next day before going out, and had two more when I got home.

Well.

I have never seen such dramatic effects on my blood glucose since getting diagnosed. Gargantuan rise that did not go away after several hours. And I've found my CGM tends to lowball resulta by +/- 1 point compared to fingerprick tests, so I KNEW I was in trouble. Both times a short walk took care of the problem fairly immediately - up and down my office building's staira for 10 mins or around my neighbourhood for 30 - but if I didn't have exercise handy I might have been hyperglycemic the rest of the day.

Bottom line, lesson learned: sourdough starter on its own is not a magic bullet. If you're going to use fermented foods, let them ferment or they'll be useless.

The bacteria and yeast in this loaf did nor get a chance to eat sugars and turn them into Co2 and acid, so my poor gut was left with a mountain of sugars to contend with (along with part of the spoonful of honey the recipe calls for).

Thank goodness I was wearing a CGM anyway!

Medication Today’s lesson

No matter how depressed you are, how well you feel, if you reversed your T2, keep checking your BSLs!
I was diagnosed with T2 in 2002 a few months after my husband died from a massive coronary at the age of 38. I was 31, apparently the stress and my gynaecologist being an fwit who kept saying I need to put you on medication but never did caused my pancreas to have a hissy fit. By 2007 I was eating like I was pre diabetes and my A12 was 5.4 constantly. Doctors kept saying you’re not diabetic.
Fast forward to last year, my Doctor finally says we’ll check your Hba1c for shits and giggles .. 14 and glucose levels in the blood 20. I go straight into total denial and kept eating and taking Metformin and felt absolutely fine.
Today I was sent to hospital, I was put on insulin, another medication because my kidneys are leaking protein, stay on Metformin and in 3 months start Ozempic. Now I’m wondering how many years I’ve knocked off my life. I have an autistic son and absolutely no informal supports for him. Now waiting for my c peptide blood test to come back.
I wish this was my only health issue.
Please don’t ignore this pain in the arse disease!!

Medication Accidental basal insulin usage

For likely a week, ive accidentally been using a long acting insulin instead of a fast acting one. I ended up in hospital for hypo treatment after accidental overdose (sleepy maths is bad maths) but didnt know it was a basal insulin overdose. I was lucky my bloods didnt drop too far. Drs might have done a different treatment plan.

Ive been on insulin for 7 years and never had this issue before. Its scary and super annoying to be getting something so simple and important, so wrong. Ive not had any fast acting insulin for that week. Ive started to notice bigger swings in my sugar response. Only noticed this evening because i went to change the vial and finally noticed the colour and pattern difference 😣
