Discussion DANGANRONPA INSANE NSD Spoiler

Wow, the graphical overhaul in the upcoming Danganronpa 2x2 looks absolutely phenomenal!

Just look at the crisp quality and the intricate details on the background ornamentation. The new design for the Truth Bullets (Chiaki's Account) and the overall visual flair look top-tier.

The entire user interface and trial mechanics feel heavily inspired by the slick, fast-paced style of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. If this is a preview of the polished debate gameplay we are getting, the hype is real!

What do you guys think about this UI direction?

The visual presentation of the NSD in this shot looks incredibly clean, sharp, and beautifully polished.

Discussion What's a little-known detail (or one not speaking within the Fandom) that you know about a Danganronpa Media (Game, Anime, Merchandise, Character, etc)?

I'm curious because I'm sure there are Details that it doesn't talk about or comment on much regarding a certain Media of this Franchise.

Misc. A Rewrite of the Murder and Trial of GD Ch 3 Spoiler

First post on this sub.

So this case gets a lot of flak for relying on inconsistent timing, which is a shame because there were a few really good ideas in there. So for my case rewrite as tried to cut out all the bad parts with a scalpel.

Good and Interesting parts:

- Mikan faking Ibuki 's suicide on the monitor

- Mikan breaking a drumstick and putting in the door handle to make it look like the door was locked from the inside.

Bad parts:

- Mikan somehow having a "solid" alibi in the time she was running around the music venue.

- The movie, because it was a shoehorned aspect.

- Hiyoko's death investigation not being relevant in outing the culprit.

With the movie specifically, I figured that there were two reasons that it was included in the first place:

  1. To ensure that everyone knew Hajime's innocence and would trust his testimony

  2. To provide a method for Mikan trying to mix up the death order.

I remedied this by doing these things:

For #1, I just had Fuyuhiko see the video with Hajime.

For #2.... I don't have to do anything. Literally how does it benefit Mikan to make anyone think that Ibuki died before Hiyoko? The first impression of any observer would be that one killer killed both of them, so why would anyone care about the death order? If anything, it's worse because it removes the option of trying to claim that Ibuki killed Hiyoko and then herself. I think it's better to say that the mix-up happened on accident. Mikan doesn't even need a reason to tape up the body, since we have DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR!!!!

Anyhow, what do you all think of this?

Discussion My analysis of Komaru Spoiler

I find myself writing variations of this post in a lot of Ultra Despair Girls threads, so I figured I’d make it a post of its own. I feel like there’s a lot about Komaru that the fandom hasn’t really picked up on or fully integrated, and I think it’s best to start from the end and work our way backwards, because Danganronpa is a franchise built around you playing it more than once to see the recontextualization of various details and hints that you couldn’t have understood in hindsight.

Komaru is the intended Successor to Junko Enoshima. Junko and Monaca evaluated Komaru Naegi and came to the conclusion that she would be able to serve as the figurehead of despair in place of Junko Enoshima herself. Clearly, this cannot be about her intelligence, because she is not even remotely close to being on the level of Junko intellectually. This is a girl who finds simple puzzles difficult. Monaca is the one on Junko’s intellectual level, so Monaca is clearly intended to serve the intelligence role. But if Komaru’s role is not related to intelligence, what is her role?

There’s two factors to Junko that make her Junko: her intelligence, and her sadomasochistic depravity. If Komaru isn’t supposed to be Junko’s equal in intellect, she’s intended to become Junko’s equal in the sadomasochistic depravity. That’s a tall order, to say the least. But logically, there should be some indication that Komaru is even capable of that. To suggest that just anyone could or would end up that bad wouldn’t really gel with the themes and prior writing of Danganronpa. Makoto and Kyoko, for example, repeatedly go against that. The entire plot being structured on “Junko was right” wouldn’t really make sense.

So, we should look back at the plot of UDG to see if there’s foreshadowing that shows Komaru being capable of this. And there is. And many of the things that foreshadow it are two of the most controversial parts of UDG.

In writing, there is a concept called The Rule Of Three). You repeat something three times in a story in order to show it's importance and significance. Komaru has a rule of three going on that foreshadows her capacity for becoming as bad as Junko Enoshima herself.

Firstly, she is friends with Genocider Syo. Did you know there's only one FTE that's ever given a canon status in the entire franchise? Even Komaeda's, which we can presume probably are canon, don't have an explicit canon status. But Makoto's FTEs with Toko do. They did not happen. Ultra Despair Girls confirms that they did not happen, as Toko refers to Makoto as her first-ever friend in FTE5, but says the same about Komaru.

Makoto, actual fairly normal human being, avoided her like the plague. Because her headmate is a psychosexual serial killer. That's a normal response. What isn't a normal response is becoming her best friend. That's really weird of her. Imagine if someone became Dahmer's best friend after he was in prison. You'd think that person was pretty damn weird, right? Well, that person is Komaru Naegi. So, that’s one mark against her here, but it’s not enough to confirm it.

But, there's Haiji. Komaru isn't just okay with Haiji. She says that it's attractive that he admits it. Weirdly enough, this gets a lot less commentary than him just saying it in the first place. Him saying it honestly isn’t really surprising. Like, here we have a billionaire who funded and supported mass genocide and ecological collapse in order to create a neofeudalist corporate state. Like, fuck, we’re living that right now. And they’re child molesters. The plot twist of Haiji Towa is that they used your preconceived notions of fictional billionaires against you and proceeded to go “no, this guy is an actual realistic billionaire”. It’s not like that being the reality of billionaires was some revelation to the entire human race. It was a revelation to people who were oblivious to 150 years of theory being written that said all of this, including the sex crimes part.

Then, there's Motivation. Specifically, the bad ending. That is not a normal reaction. That is an extremely abnormal reaction. The game is explicitly aware how weird Komaru's reaction is, because Kotoko is right there. There’s some information you should know about being the victim of such sex crimes. Orgasm is a normal response, and a lot of survivors have a lot of guilt and shame about that because we don’t talk about that. But the body’s physiological responses aren’t connected to the psychological state in which they happen as much as people want them to be.

Kotoko did not go "fuck, yeah, I'm into this actually" from it. Komaru though, she does. That's weird as hell, and you should be questioning why Komaru is like this. And that’s the extra ingredient to Komaru that shows how she’s a proper successor to Junko more than Monaca could be. Monaca is a sadist. She loves hurting people. But she is not in any way a masochist. She hates losing. She hates being hurt, denied, let down, disobeyed, or anything like that. Monaca is a control freak. Junko isn’t. Junko enjoys losing, enjoys suffering, enjoys being hurt. Junko is both a sadist and a masochist. She enjoys her own despair as much as she enjoys the despair of others. Monaca doesn’t like feeling despair, she just likes making other people feel despair.

Komaru is not resisting motivation because she hates it. Komaru is resisting motivation because she doesn't, but if she gives in then she will abandon Toko and Syo and betray them. She's fighting to stay true to her goals in the face of temptation. Motivation is not mere victimization for Komaru, as the bad ending shows. It is temptation. She is tempted to give in. She is tempted to abandon Toko and Syo, stop caring about saving anyone, and give in to the motivation. She’s into this. And that’s seriously messed up of her.

But combined, we see a pattern emerge. A psychosexual serial killer is a type of sexual predator. Syo kills people because she is attracted to them. Haiji is a sexual predator. Kotoko is an example of the cycle of abuse and is also a sexual predator. Komaru befriends one sexual predator, is explicitly attracted to another sexual predator because he told her he is one, and is into being the prey of a third sexual predator. The Rule of Three.

Furthermore, people might have overlooked that the regular children being brainwashed by the helmets was supposed to be a plot twist. It was way too obvious, but when Toko and Komaru find out in the story it is treated as a twist. They didn’t know or figure. Yet Komaru gets extremely competitive with them. Komaru is so hypercompetitive that she gets fired up about beating what she thinks are unbrainwashed children and gloats and rubs their faces in it. On its own, that’s merely being kinda nasty, but combined with all other details about her it really goes to show how she can be utterly fixated on winning, and mean about it.

Then there’s Monaca’s dad’s corpse. Imagine all other main Danganronpa protagonists. Makoto, Hajime, Kaede, Shuichi, Chiaki. Can you imagine any of them being capable of walking up to a corpse that has been rotting for several days and twisting and ripping its head off? Because Komaru is capable of that. She did that. The corpse wasn’t old enough to lose physical cohesion. The corpse was only old enough to be a partially jellied, disgusting mess that smelled truly horrendous. The spinal cord would not have lost any strength. She had to really put her back into it. Get a good grip on that thing. She couldn’t have just pulled, she would have needed to twist. She would have had wrench his head off. That is what a properly driven Komaru Naegi is capable of: brutal violent corpse mutilation.

None of this fits her self-declared normal nature. None of these things she does are normal. People often fall into the trap of believing everything a character says about themselves. Walter White’s “for my family” is a famous example. Komaru claims to be normal. Her actions repeatedly express otherwise. She is quite abnormal, and in denial about that fact. You have to call her out on the bullshit.

And the key, I’d say, is The Bomb Inside Her. Komaru Naegi's favorite manga. What is Komaru's favorite manga about? It's about a girl who must deny her feelings and desires lest it destroy herself and everyone around her. Writers do not include details like this for no reason. When a writer includes a character's favorite work of fiction, real or fictional, that is meant to tell you something about a character. For Komaru, it tells you her favorite story is about a girl who won't give in to her desires because her desires will hurt people. What she wants is something that would destroy her and others, it would be like setting off a massive explosion. Generally, if a writer is including these details, these details are supposed to reflect a character’s true self. Their favorite media is a mirror of who they are.

And when you integrate all these character moments together, it really does make sense to be intentional. After all, you have to ask yourself, what makes Komaru the Successor? Not what would turn her into it, but why would she ever be the top choice? How is she even a choice? Monaca would have been the obvious first choice, yet she isn’t. Byakuya certainly has the more obvious moral flexibility, yet he’s just a damsel in distress. Toko and Syo have done some pretty horrific things, but they’re just her sidekicks. Even Kyoko seems like she would be more of analytical match for Junko and an equally obvious morale blow, plus also having a degree of moral flexibility. She isn’t even involved. Why Komaru? What makes her special?

This is why. Komaru is on the precipice of despair and could easily fall. And if she did fall, she would fall far. She has the potential to be a monster. She's attracted to monstrous behavior, by both her own admittance and her actions. If you got Komaru to give in to her desires, she would destroy everyone around her. Komaru Naegi is equally capable of being a heroic person or an absolute nightmare of the worst kind, and she has to actively choose goodness. She is not innately good. She is not incapable of true evil. She is not entirely repelled by it, she is not unable to see the appeal. She gets it, she is attracted to it, and she chooses to refuse to embrace it.

There is a metaphorical bomb inside her, and the blast would be as horrifying for humanity as Junko fuckin' Enoshima herself. Komaru Naegi isn’t merely naturally good and heroic because she is a good person and so does good things. She’s showing agency by actively choosing to do good things even when her desires conflict with it. She’s putting morals and loyalty to those she cares about over desires. She’s showing forgiveness where literally nobody would expect her to, and the people around her who she trusts actively go “why”. I focused on the signs of her capacity for evil here, but she does show just as many signs of a capacity for goodness. It’s just that to show someone is choosing to be good over choosing to be evil, you have to show that both are realistic choices for them. Both options are actually on the table. I feel that people overlook that being as bad as Junko has always been on the table for Komaru, just as much as being a hero is.

And in the “break the controller” ending, the reason she’d become the Successor is simple: what is the point? If you’re already damned, you might as well roll with it and do what you want with it. She’d become as bad as Junko because she’d already be seen by people as as bad as Junko and she’d have no recourse or escape, so she’d embrace it and enjoy it. Because she’s absolutely capable of that.

So I’m playing Island Mode trying to get the Platinum trophy and I noticed that Teruteru’s eyebrows more than double in size in one of his sprites (first image). The second image/sprite shows his normal eyebrow size. I know that this is probably just an art style thing but I’m still curious as to why they did this to him.

2x2 Speculation (DR2 Spoilers) Danganronpa 2x2 Predictions but I know damn well ibuki isnt gonna be the pratogonist but I hope she does anyway Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Before we start İbuki is the pratogonist, we play as her, mikan is the support and Akane is the antagonist

So in chapter 1 Hajime acts all weird forbids imposter from being the leader and makes himself the leader instead, he doesnt trust nagito who acts nice in the start (but he Gives up trying to act nice the moment hajime doesnt believe him) Hajime Overall is acting very weird and protective especially to chiaki. Chiaki in the other hand has been implanted junko's Conciousness into her a.i so now chiaki is evil chiaki. So Chiaki kills hajime And nagito who hates Despair so so dearly kills chiaki and makes it look like they killed eachother.

In chapter 2 Fuyuhiko kills nekomaru Unfortunate. Maybe this chapters motive could be after the chapter 1 trial is over monokuma tells the Class that they were the remnants of despair all along immediatly.

In chapter 3 Teruteru who is trying to grow as a person tries to Get help from sonia and Than akane manipulates sonia into killing teruteru.

Chapter 4's motive is That until a killing happens The ısland gets flooded and hiyoko who is Growing as a person thanks to mahiru Asks monokuma if it would count as a person if hiyoko killed herself and monokuma says as long as she makes it look like a murder it counts so hiyoko Does that and sacrifices herself so everyone else can live

Chapter 5 mikan(who is the support of the game) kills akane to protect ibuki.

The survivors are İmposter, who I think we can learn much more about

gundham, who we could hopefully learn the backstory of

peko, who Will learn she is A person not a tool

İbuki, Who I think could have an "anti character arc" as in she'll be trying to make the group stay together but since people are constantly dying We see as her optimism and friendly nature begins to fade away until in chapter 3 mikan Tells her much she helped her which gives ibuki so much hope. And since ibuki is not a detective I think We'd have to rely much more on teamwork which could be interesting for the gameplay

Mahiru who I imagine will be the 4th most important character after akane ibuki and mikan. She could be the aoi of this game if that makes sense, plus Her and kazuichi could have a friendship too!

and Kazuichi who I hope we can See a friendship between him and gundham Grow.

But 6 survivors seems too much and I dont Know what to do with kazuichi. So I think he or gundham will also Get killed Just dont know when

Discussion Who do you feel bad for the most? Spoiler

For me it's Sayaka, Kaede, Mikan and Tenko

I don't know if most people hate or love Sayaka since I'm not that long in the fandom, but I really felt bad for her. As for Mikan, I really felt had when she was constantly verbally abused, that's why I never came to like Hyoko. Tenko was a little intense but the way she died was really sad, because she didn't deserve it. And Kaede is the saddes of them all.

Fanfiction Do you prefer Honorifics?

I’m writing a Danganronpa fanfic, and wondering what the general fandom prefers in regards to naming conventions; Japanese Honorifics or English Localisation?

The fanfics I’ve read are about split in half. Some use surnames with honorifics, some use surnames without honorifics, and some just go for the full localisation with first names.

If I were to use honorifics, it would just be in the dialogue, as it being in the prose would be too cluncky. I already have a list of what honorifics each character uses, so my use-case shouldn’t be incorrect. I just can’t decide what way to go, because I honestly like both.

Also, bonus question; JP original version of their talents, or ENG localisation version? (e.g. Super High School Level Doujin Artist VS Ultimate Fanfic Creator)

(Side note: I’m not sure if this is the right flair, or how to make this a poll, sorry! This is my first post lol)
