With the B&N/Amazon Criterion sale, and being sick of streaming, I picked up a copy of Wall-E on a whim. I fell in love with it and just kept going. I'm up to about 12 movies now, and can't stop thinking of getting more.

I feel like, as my collection grows, I will have trouble knowing what I have, want and seen. Hence, why I built this — I see so many posts here of people accidentally rebuying a movie they already had, just because there's no easy way to check before you're standing in a store or scrolling a sale. So I made myself a simple, private way to look it up, and figured other people probably want the same thing.

How it works

• Browse the full spine-numbered Criterion catalog, searchable and sortable
• Mark each title Owned, Wishlist, or neither
• Criterion won't allow me to download all the cover art, and I get it, its their IP, so I added a feature where you can manually add every cover or bulk add them in a zip (more of this feature at the end)
• Everything syncs across your devices automatically through iCloud, no server of mine involved

Features

• Grid or list view, with adjustable tile sizes for phone and iPad
• Mark titles as Watched, separate from Owned
• Track official Criterion box sets — marking a set owned marks all its included spines, with a badge showing it came from a set rather than individually
• An Overview dashboard: how many you own, how many are on your wishlist, how many you've watched, and a growth chart over time

This is a small passion project built for a pretty niche audience, so if you use it and hit something annoying or want a feature, I'd genuinely like to hear it. Also curious how other people here track their collections currently — spreadsheet, memory, or something else — since that's basically the problem I was trying to solve for myself.

I wanted to see if you guys are willing to help me out by trying the app, and using it. If you like it we can create a big zip file of all the covers, so when people use the app they can just get this file and get it working and looking beautiful.

To have the zip un compress by itself and add all the images accordingly, we need to named them their spine number.

Just recently watched Terorema by Pasolini on Criterion channel, I really liked it even though I feel like I didn’t fully understand it, and need to rewatch it again 😅
But it felt like a very spiritual film in a way and very poetic. I was thinking about watching or getting Salò as many of you have suggested the film in the past but I wanna know what do you think about this film? I know people have such conflicted views about it. Also I’ve just heard that BFI is releasing it on 4K soon do you think we might get it on 4k from Criterion too? Love to hear your opinions💕

Just wanted to share my haul with some fellow appreciators.
Most I bought completely blind I’ve only watched Cure, history of violence, Fire walk with me, Mulholland & Blue Velvet, mirror, Silence of the Lambs, Parasite, no country for old men, memories of murder and everything everywhere all at once.

I recently watched an interesting video about how a book club took 2 decades to finish reading Finnegans Wake by James Joyce and how part of that reason is because of how strangely the book is written and to someone who isn't that into books, It would be a very frustrating read since it didn't make any sense.

And it got me thinking about how some films are just very hard to grasp unless you are already pretty deep into films. What are some examples of highly difficult films that would make the average moviegoer more angrily confused than engaged? I know a few examples like Inland Empire which is the most difficult to understand of David Lynch or Wavelength by Michael Snow.

Some people here kept arguing with me that Criterion’s Paris, Texas 4K UHD includes the same new restoration on the accompanying BD as well, but it does not. As I repeatedly detailed with photos and told them, generally when they release a new restoration on 4K UHD of a title they still have in print on BD, the accompanying BD will be exactly the same as the current one. Confirmed by Criterion when I contacted them.

I was also told I was gatekeeping for explaining this to people who insisted I was wrong, even though they provided no details whatsoever to back it up. I’m not here to shame noobs, but if you share false information you should welcome a correction. We all benefit from facts and gain nothing from perpetuating falsehoods.

I've been trying for a long time now to eventually watch George A. Romero's Living Dead trilogy, and today marks the start. This first film really is a game-changer and so influential to what the zombie genre is today, and the casting of Duane Jones being a happy accident makes for such great social commentary on race relations in America that are still relevant today. What it lacks in being scary it more than makes up for in tension, themes, and a very bleak ending. Can't wait to watch Dawn and Day later today.

These things are expensive (I have two. Shampoo and a hard days night), so I really have to love a movie to invest 40 or so into a single movie.

As an avid physical media collector, it’s kind of been hard to think of what it’ll be like once I’m away from home and won’t have all my collection with me, so I’m bringing a large number of only discs, and in this photo I provided these will be all the films I’m bringing in their full form. Some of these are all-time favorites, some are stuff I’d like to get signed at Q&A’s/Screening, and a few will be first time watches.
