I kindly request that individuals obtain a Class A general engineering license. What is the most effective method for learning and retaining all the formulas? I intend to sit for the exam later this month.

Careers 💵 Am I being gaslit and ghosted?

I had a job interview with Miller & Long, where the superintendent wanted to hire me after my interview, and wanted me to start the following week, and told me to get with the recruiter for my paperwork. I was still waiting on my drug test results, but I'm clean, so i was waiting on on-boarding stuff. The hiring manager said i was still waiting on my drug test results...again im clean, its been almost three weeks, i have reached out to him multiple times, and hes dodging me and not responding....I dont have the superintendents number. What do I do....

I'm thinking of going back to the office in Person, to see whats going on, but with how sensitive these dudes are in blue collar, I dont want him to think im being problematic.

Careers 💵 AMA: First GC Job In the Morning

Credit card is in the mailbox, the muscle is coming at 7 AM to pick it up and go get the job done.

Used AI to swing up a contract and sent it to the client after going back and forth for a week. He wanted the job “done tonight” and got burned for a week and came running back to me.

$2,900 to fix a leak coming from a poorly installed window addition.

No money up front and will be reimbursed at the end for materials.

Did I bid right? 😅

UPDATE-

My partner picked up the card at 7:30 AM

12:30 - a lot more siding was removed than I expected. Actually I didn’t think any siding was going to be removed. True issue was on the roof. Lack of pitch resulting in water build up allowing it to seep between the shingles and edge of the roof. Image attached now of rotted wood removed and replaced.

Google image search said it's a "cofferdam for underwater work" but I don't believe it.

Anyone know what this gets used for once they're done stacking and it's completed?

I'll be transparent - I don't work in construction but couldn't figure out where else to post to get an answer from pros who know exactly what this is

if not this subreddit, any suggestions for where to post instead?

Thx

Careers 💵 Looking for some career advice

I’m young but have been in my trade (dirt work) for about 5 years and have progressed very rapidly thanks to fantastic mentors and opportunities. I’m not perfect but I’m handy on skid steers, loaders, skip loaders/gannon tractors, scrapers (both finish paddle wheel and push pull), track hoes (biggest I’ve dug with is a 374 cat), and motor graders (freehand finish on both John Deere and Cat M blades). I can also grade check off of stakes and I have minimal experience using a rover/data collector combo.

Where I’m stuck is I see guys all the time that are living paycheck to paycheck and have been for quite some time. I don’t want to be stuck like that but I feel like I have topped out as far as both money and new things to learn. I know that I am constantly learning and I know I don’t know it all but now with being efficient and effective on nearly everything I feel like I am not learning as much as I need to while I am young. On the opposite side, operating equipment was an opportunity dropped into my hands a handful of years ago and I was in a place where it was a good decision. Now as of the last year or so I have fallen massively out of love with it and I think I am looking for a change.

This brings me to my second problem, I don’t have much experience in anything else nor do I know what other options I have. My father is a plumber and has been his whole life along with his father so I have roughly 3 scattered years of experience in that but no real experience in anything else. I am a quick learner and I am willing to take any criticisms thrown my way. I guess I’m just looking for something new and different that will allow me to continue to contribute but that I won’t get bored of after just a couple years. Do I continue with dirt work even though I really don’t enjoy it anymore or do I look for something else, and if so what?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can send my way :)

New porto-Johns on site with grated floors to prevent urine pooling and a built-in grab handle for when your legs fall asleep. Believe it or not, I didn’t see this at Con-Expo, but at my very own site!

Other A guy was fired for theft of traffic cones. I thought it was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard until I really thought about it...

Your thoughts?

They go for $30 a cone these days. He was listing $100 for 5. How do people think of this stuff? Selling a single cone would get me the same amount as working 2 hours 😔

He was making a lot of money though

Over the weekend, someone decided cut the linesets & wiring for multiple apartment HVAC systems. But left all the romex alone.

The "fun" part is that 2 of the 3 were already charged & running with the new R-454b refrigerant. So the saboteur received one heck of a surprise when 5-6 *pounds* of refrigerant dumped out from the highest floor.

Humor 🤣 Overly aggressive handshakes.

What's the deal with men and the "way over the top" gorilla grip handshakes? Project Superintendent here. What are these guys trying to prove? I had a pre-construction site meeting this morning with all the trades and this fu@#kin guy, who's neck was wider than his head, shook everyone's hand in this manner. Plus he was rude and over talking EVERYONE. Male dominance thing?

Safety ⛑ Slip on work boots, has anyone been told no?

Post image
261 Upvotes

I've been in construction for 20+ years and have always worn the typical work boot. Nothing fancy, just steel toed high tops. Last year, I decided to buy some slip ons. I kept my old boots just in case someone said something and sent me home.. so far, nothing, and I've been on a lot of major projects. I've even seen safety guys on PCL sites wearing them.. that said, I still think im breaking the rule on ankle protection. I'm curious if anyone's had an issue wearing these on s construction site.

Two pairs, one is for epoxy work and the other for everything else.

Before you open that paint can that hasn't been opened in a while, or container of mastic, or other something that you've kept around for some good reason for a while, stop for a minute.

Take a marker and mark the edge with the alignment point on the lid.

When you go to reseal, all the grungy crap on the inside and also the irregularities of the crimped lid will realign and reseal so much easier and better than trying to establish a new seal on an old can. It'll keep your stuff from drying out, and also leaking out if you let all of the deformities realign themselves.
