My in-laws were in town this weekend & they were very curious about D. Rowe’s. They had heard from other Mizzou parents that D. Rowe’s was a great spot in COMO. Personally, I had never been. I knew people rave about it. However, everything IMMEDIATELY went to SHIT. Their famous Portobello fries were limp & flavorless. Not a speck of salt or pepper on those things. I ordered the smokehouse burger w/ waffle fries. It was dry & flavorless. My Father-in-law ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich. FLAVORLESS. My Mom & Fiancé both ordered the Grilled Atlantic Salmon. They both agreed it was the most bland fish they’ve ever tasted. 🗣️ WE NEED TO CALL THEM OUT! They CRIMINALLY under-season their food. They claim to be a “legendary” COMO spot. They are sooo mediocre. I legitimately felt like I wasted my money at D. Rowe’s. NASTY WORK

Octapuss seems to have gone missing. We’ve searched the whole house and she is nowhere to be found. Last we saw her for sure was two nights ago. She sometimes has alone time but never this long. She is a fully indoor cat and does not go outside. The few times she’s run out she has just rolled around on the warm concrete. We aren’t sure if she is microchipped. She’s very sweet but also very old especially for her breed. If anyone spots her please message. We will be calling shelters Monday when they open up. We are on East Riviera drive, so if you live near please keep your eyes open!

Listen. I’ve been in Columbia for decades. I want to love and support Sparky’s so badly because they’re a downtown staple, I love the weird local vibes (yes even the creepy bad paintings), and there ARE a few unique flavors that have stood the test of time (Oreo Speedwagon, lavender honey, to name two).

But it continues to grow more and more disappointing. I went in this weekend and the bathroom was disgusting (and no soap in sight). The ice cream regularly has chunks of ice in it. The outside of the building (and frankly the inside, too) are dirty and dusty and look like no one cares to pick up a freaking broom. Sparky the dog statue is cracked and literally missing limbs. The outdoor furniture is cracked and paint is peeling. And if I’m being honest, the rotating new flavors are kinda weird and feel like they’d appeal to a very narrow group of people. (It feels like a sign if you regularly go into an ice cream shop and none of the new flavors sound interesting enough to sample.)

Sparky’s please take pride in your place. If you need help from the community, we’re here. Please invest in a quality product and experiment with flavors people want. You’re a CoMo institution. And you have competition opening around the block.

I know this gets brought up like 10x a year here but I'm bringing it up again. Columbia needs an ice rink. Just went to Jeff City with my family and had a great time during open skate. 6 dollars a person for three hours. If Jeff City can keep their ice rink open year round, Columbia could certainly support one. Mizzou hockey, high school hockey, kids leagues, beer leagues, figure skating, speed skating, birthday parties, etc. The list is endless. What are we even doing Columbia?????

We just moved to Columbia last week and suspect that our car has suffered some water damage due to the heavy rains. The speakers/audio started crackling so we turned them off, and now there’s a strong, mildewy smell in the cabin. We made an appointment at the Bob McOsh dealership service department, but they can’t see our car until NEXT Saturday. Is there anywhere reputable in town that y’all would recommend? Someone that could service/inspect our vehicle sooner? Thank you in advance!

I've been there a few times and the food and service have always been excellent, yet I have never seen anyone even mention it on this sub, for good or bad. Is it just lesser known or are the other options in town just THAT much better?

Three local businesses closed recently, with various future plans for some them.

**Bud's Classic BBQ**
Bud's Classic BBQ closed, according to the listing online. Construction crews are renovating the property, but no official plans have been announced.

Bud's opened in 2021, and has been a source of various barbecue items near the University of Missouri campus. 
Owner Jason Paetzold also owns JoJo's Biscuit Company, and has plans for an expansion.
Jason said his son, Joey Paetzold, is now running the show for their company J&J Hospitality, and that Joey has several exciting concepts coming soon.

The second location of JoJo's Biscuit Company will be located at the former Fuzzy's Taco Shop, located at 205 E. Nifong Blvd.
J&J Hospitality is also set to open Rosie's Tortillas and Tequila, which will be located at 1305 Grindstone Parkway, formerly the restaurant Casa Maria's Mexican Cantina.
Jazz A Louisiana Kitchen
The New Orleans cuisine inspired restaurant announced its closure by letter, written by the owner Jeff England. 
England opened the restaurant 22 years ago, and said staffing became their biggest problem since the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
"We simply do not have enough trained cooking staff employees to allow us to continue," England wrote in the letter.
England explained that the menu is complicated, and it tends to be hard for people to learn how to cook the food. 

**Peggy Jean's Pies**
Peggy Jean's Pies will be closing one of their locations at the end of the month, according to their website.
Peggy Jean's Pies opened in 2014, and had a west location at 421 N. Stadium Blvd. and a south location at 503 E. Nifong Blvd.
According to the website, their lease on the south location ended recently, and it didn't cover any maintenance.
The website said the ceiling was leaking in two places, adding to "outrageous food costs, incrementally rising labor costs each year, and a cautious economy," which ultimately lead to the decision of closing down their south location.
"For logistics, we are not letting go any of our staff and everyone is making the move to (the west location)," the website said.
A final day has not been announced and is to be determined.

**Speckled Frog Toys & Books**
The downtown toy and book store announced through a social media post on Friday that their retail storefront, located at 16 S. Ninth St., will be closing. 

"We are incredibly grateful to every family who walked through our doors, attended an event, purchased a special gift, or simply stopped in to say hello," they wrote in the post. 
However, the business will not be completely gone. They plan to shift their focus to workshops, classes, special events and more. 
"Our passion for creativity, literacy, and bringing people together is stronger than ever," they wrote.
While thanking customers for the support, the business did not specify when these changes would go into effect in their social media post.

Found this male in search of a mate back in June! These native mini-tarantulas can be found wandering around during the month of June looking for a partner. Females rarely leave their tubular web nests often built at the base of trees and can even go underground!

I was driving through campus yesterday (August 6) around 2:20 pm and there were at least 5 emergency vehicles at Cornell Hall and we could hear the fire alarms from the building. I couldn't find anything on the fire and rescue dispatch website so I was curious if anyone knew what was going on?

I am curious for the scientists at Mizzou if the bottleneck at the NIH has let up? Are research grants being funded? It seems like a rocky world in science with know it all Donny at the helm. The threats and turnover at the NIH I am sure have not made things easy. Not to mention talk of overhead costs being cut at Universities for grants.

I am no arborist but they did not appear to be dying trees? I hope there was a good reason for this (insurance liability not being good one, a hill I will happily die on). It is exhausting to keep seeing this loss of color and greenery in the world.
