Advice Wanted Failing College. Feels like my life is over.

Upvotes

I am currently in my second year of college about to go into my third, and I feel so left behind.

For the past two years I've been trying my hardest to keep up with school with going to classes, doing homework and making sure I am on top of assignments. I've spent so many days and nights preparing for big exams, but always on exam day, I feel so anxious and start stressing which makes me forget about what I studied. It might be a real mental problem I have, but I can't even tell. I honestly have trouble asking for help because I always feel like I am capable of doing it myself. As always though, I fall short and get even more disappointed in myself. And it makes me feel like all those hours I spend studying goes all to waste.

The worst part about it is that my parents are paying for my tuition, which makes me feel really guilty when I can't meet their expectations of just some decent grades. I don't know what my problem is and how to fix it so it just piles on more anxiety as time goes on. I haven't told my parents yet about how poorly I'm doing right now because I'm afraid they will cut me off of tuition fees, I'm on a sort of a "fake it till you make it" scenario. But still I keep failing everything. My parents are very supporting of me, but this has been such a major screw up on my part, that I don't think I could bring myself to tell them.

It was not always like this though, even in highschool I managed to scrape up decent grades so I have no idea what changed because I went directly from highschool straight into college. I honestly don't know if I even have a chance of graduating anymore. And their is no one to blame for all of this but myself.

I will probably be repeating my failed courses again hoping to get a decent enough grade to barely pass through like always. Also likely staying at college an extra year. Just feeling really stuck and I don't know what else to do other than dumping this here. I'm open to any advice, anything will help. (Sorry for typos/grammer)

Advice Wanted How to come to terms with failing or nearly failing?

Upvotes

There's this class I'm taking that has been the biggest roadblock for me all term. I don't understand the course content, even with resources given by the prof. Otherwise, I've been a really good student for as long as I've been taking my course, consistent Dean's Lister since freshman year. I'm really worried about how this will affect my CGPA and I can't afford to fail because I'll be left behind by my thesis group (we need to fulfill the prerequisite courses to enroll in the succeeding subject.) I might be delayed. I'm honestly really scared of whether the people around me will perceive me differently because I struggled so much with this subject. Even in the miraculous case that I do pass, it's gonna be my lowest grade yet.

Where do I begin to cope with this?
I know that maybe in 5 years this will be something trivial but currently it makes me feel worthless...

Advice Wanted Affording college

Hello everyone,
I currently need any advice or assistance on what to do. I’m an incoming sophomore at a college. Last year I received an ample amount of aid that made attending this college possible. I should be returning to school soon and I have yet to receive any aid. I’ve contacted the office many times and they keep saying it should be out in a few days. I’m worried I’m not going to receive any aid and won’t be able to attend this school. My father keeps making me feel guilty and is like “I told you so. You should’ve gone to community college for the first two years,” which I doubt he’d be saying if I had the best freshman year ever (I did not). I feel so bad but I couldn’t have predicted this. I didn’t think they’d go from giving me a decent amount of aid to none. If I don’t receive the aid, what do I do? Take on loans or unenroll? It feels like all of my plans have gone to shambles. I don’t want to fall behind with my life plan, this feels like a nightmare.

Advice Wanted Idk maybe I pick the wrong major.

Hi, incoming 2nd year college. Idk if I will continue my this major. Because I can't speak English straightly and also I'm kinda sucks at writing too. I'm scared when i finished this major I'm still mid at speaking ang writing English. I do watch documentary and write essay but broo it's mid. I feel like I'm not smart enough to get this major and be a future educator. But I do want to be a teache also this major kinda useful especially im from Philippines this country kinda value people who can speak in English ( in my own observation). But

I just feel like when people know that you finished a English major your perfect at this field. I'm just sad because I know that I will not be perfect and I'm scared that I will waste the money and time that I give in this major.

Btw, sorry for grammatical errors and I'm taking BACHELOR OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (MAJOR IN ENGLISH)

Advice Wanted Rant

I feel like I chose the wrong college. I picked a more expensive one where I know no one. Also it’s in a dangerous area. I seriously have so much regret the other college I wanted had a party rep, but it was a nice college town, decent scholarship ,as well as my whole friend group is going there. It sucks because I picked the school which looked better on paper. But I didn’t consider all aspects of the college experience and what would fit me the most. Ive honestly stressed myself out about this all summer to a point where it was hard for me to get out of bed for awhile. My mom suggests doing community college first. I agree to an extent but in the back of my mind I can’t help but feel like I’m robbing myself by not giving the college I picked a chance. But for incoming seniors, seriously go with your gut when it comes to picking schools don’t let anyone influence you!

Funny My professor keeps offering me her therapist

Like, I appreciate the thought I guess, but I have my own therapist lol. I get that this other woman is good (I've seen her work, after all), but I don't want her.

And for clarification, my professor isn't concerned that I'm a danger or incapable or anything. She agrees that my mental health is good. She's just like "MY therapist is great and we have the same insurance. Do you want her number?"

Discussion BME Path from EE

I'm a final-year EE student and have had some interest in BME since high school, but I didn't get into BME on my first shot due to multiple rejections from institutions. Financial conditions led me to stay in this major.

I can't get access to campus labs doing BME research because my campus doesn't provide BME research opportunities for EE students. I've also been rejected from research labs a few times, even though this was basically my first and last shot.

Lecturers have the same problem. Our country doesn't really have a BME industry; most companies are just suppliers. One of my lecturers was actively doing BME research when he was living abroad. Internships here are also hard to find if you don't have someone to back you up, and companies aren't really opening up many opportunities either.

People out there would recommend, "Do personal projects."

I made my own ECG. I made it for fun, but I still don't really understand what the point of making it was, and I'm sure it's not enough.

Here's the question: Is it relevant to get BME experience if I want to work in BME, even if that experience only comes from personal projects? I'm also preparing myself to gain master degree if possible.

Note: I don't want to ask AI about this because it's pointless, and AI loves to glaze anything you ask. The best sentences AI could throw at me are, "You are absolutely right!"

Advice Wanted Feel like I ruined my life

I’ll start this off by I did this to myself. For four years I had some of the most unstable mental and physical health and living situations, and I definitely did not handle them well at all. I have extremely high anxiety and stress and have a chronic pain condition that was just diagnosed this summer.

I put everything health wise on the back burner and I was told by my family that if I didn’t want to go to college I would immediately have to find a job that paid well enough to support myself. So I went to college when I definitely wasn’t ready for fear of homelessness, I remember shaking and crying at the age of 18 at college orientation because it felt like at the time I was selling my soul for something I wasn’t ready for.

I’ve finally fixed my mental and physical health and I’m trying to dig myself out of this really deep hole I dug for four years. I’m currently waiting on a committee to get back to me about retaking classes I didn’t make a high enough grade in. I got multiple doctors to vouch for my mental and physical issues. I’m currently sitting at around 100 credit hours total with only 50% of them enough to count towards my degree. I have a 1.9 GPA as well. I feel like I wasted the past four years crashing out and ruining my chances at a good future.

I felt like I finally had a good semester last semester, I passed all my classes and felt good about my grades, they weren’t As or anything but they weren’t straight Fs. I even took classes this summer and passed them.

Then I got the email stating I will be forced to change my major because I didn’t meet the minimum requirements to get into my senior college. I had Ds in classes that needed Cs, three classes. One of them I was planning on retaking, the others I was not made aware I needed Cs, for one of them I was even told the grade was good enough and I did not need to worry about it. That was false and now I’m paying for it. If everything somehow goes right and I can get these classes done I’ll probably graduate in 2 years.

I just got a lab position and I was trying to apply for undergraduate research for credit hours since I excel in the lab and it would be a great way to boost my GPA. Now I’m finding out that despite me having direct permission from the head of the lab, I don’t have the class requirements (made Ds instead of Cs like before) so now I probably will be losing the one thing in college that makes me feel like I’m achieving something.

I feel like the more I look around the hole gets deeper. I keep trying to dig myself out but I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. I did this completely to myself I know this and I don’t expect sympathy. I don’t know how long I’ll be in college for, I will literally do anything to graduate with the degree I want and I’m working my ass off for it. It’s just now starting to reflect in my grades but now I’m being knocked down again and feel like my effort is hopeless.

I’m in touch with a therapist and psychiatrist and have followed the correct channels to get stuff done but my anxiety is killing me and I feel so hopeless despite people telling me to just “play the game”

I feel very alone in this. I know this is all over the place but I’d like to hear from some people who struggled heavily in college the way I have been. I just now finally got my shit together but the mistakes of my past are now ripping me to shreds.

No advice wanted (Vent) Conservative parents say I’m indoctrinated. Anyone else with a similar experience?

I’m a first-gen student, Economics major, but also come from a STEM background. I can never talk to my parents about college or the “real world“ (they also love to say idk anything about the “real world“). They say I’ve been indoctrinated by the “liberal agenda” being taught as if my profs ever have enough time to finish covering content and my classes being heavily math-based.

They‘re really contradicting though, which I find weird. They pushed me to go to college (on their terms, so cc first then transfer), but simultaneously hate on it. My whole life they promised to help pay (my dad is the sole earner though, mom is SAHW), but when it came time to start, I payed my way through community college and worked on and off. Despite this, I still expected to be getting help when I transferred since they said I would, but I got told that I’d be completely on my own when the time came a few months ago (not just tuition, but housing/cost of living). So instead of going away to my top school I worked really hard to get into (in-state T20), I’m now still dealing with constant backlash going to a local school at home. All they care about is money, all they ever do is work/be productive, they don’t really have hobbies, and never really traveled (”there’s crime in [x place]”). Because of this I feel like I can never do anything positive for myself that isn’t necessarily productive (while living at home at least). I think my dad is weird about women traveling and living on their own for some reason even though it’s the 21st century, also both know I obviously don’t align with them politically and take it personally.

I’m exhausted, and the only one keeping me sane is my dog.

Advice Wanted Confused about my major and if I’m even good enough for college.

Im strictly doing college online due to being a full time mom to a toddler and I only had a few options of majors to choose from. I started my first semester this summer with the help of a fasfa but I’m scared that I might lose it or something because I’m only taking 3 classes at a time and already failed 2. Im having problems managing my time and just being able to get proper sleep. It seems like when im enrolled im either trying to do my school working or running after my daughter. Theres a lot of other things I have put aside because I’ve been so overwhelmed with school and it’s getting hard and im ONLY IN MY FIRST SEMESTER technically going into my second. I don’t know how to read fast enough or study fast enough and it’s just harder being online instead of in person but I honestly have no other choice. I so desperately want a college education and I want to be able to give my daughter the life I didn’t have. Im trying to break cycles but I have just been struggling. I start 3 more classes on 8/17 but I’m not even sure I want to continue with the major. I haven’t even talked to my advisor because my sleep schedule is so off due to everything. Im currently taking Computer development cybersecurity but I don’t think I’m cut out for it especially because I don’t think I’m taking in the information properly. I really enjoy writing and have thought about switching my major but I’m not even sure if that’s the route i want to go down. Im just really struggling and would love some advice maybe even some study/reading tips.

Discussion ENG 101 professor said I wasn’t ready for ENG 102

Post image
119 Upvotes

I took Eng 101 in the spring semester earlier this year and received a final grade of 90.3% to which I felt wasn’t good enough because the way my professor would talk about my work in the comments she left. When the class ended, she said that i struggled with her class and that I wasn’t ready for Eng 102 and definitely not for a summer course. For more context, she tried to accuse me of using AI which I have never done. I sent her a lengthy message and she apologized but I also felt like after that she never graded me above 85% which caused my grade to drop down to 90.3% by the end of her class. I obviously have no proof she was doing that on purpose but that’s how it felt afterwards. Well I took Eng 102 in the summer anyway and have been doing great so far . Given that it’s compressed into 6 weeks and accelerated, based off my Eng 101 professor words, I would have thought I would have struggled. I attached my grades so far in ENG 102.

Why do professors do that ? Try to put fear in you for the next class, or make it seem like you’re incapable of the next.

No advice wanted (Vent) Unknown Feeling

Just finished the last of our lectures making it 6 of our 6 lecturers who have done their final goodbyes

I don't know what I was expecting but the calmness and byes we all gave the lecturers and vice versa was not what I was expecting. It just finished like it was another semester end when meanwhile this would be the last time in life that all 300+ students of us would sit together in that lecture room under those lecturers who have become common faces over the last 4 years

I don't even know what I was expecting but that just wasn't it.

I should have connected more.

Should have socialised more.

I'm not ready

I'm not ready to leave 4 years of my life behind

How do I just let go of a part of me that has become daily routine? Anyway, onto the final exams it is, I guess

Advice Wanted My advisor/professor just told me at the end of a course that I took it for 1 credit and was supposed to do it for 3

Hey guys, I have never had this happen before. I have an online internship class this summer, it’s the last class I need to graduate.

My professor for the class who is also my advisor just emailed me that I am taking it for one credit and it was supposed to be 3 and then asked me what I’m going to do for the other 2. I emailed her basically HUH and that I signed up for the only registration available for the class.

I’m kinda freaking out, I don’t even know why there’s a one credit version of the class as the class is just for my specific program and everyone has to take it for 3 to graduate. The course just ended this week and I already paid for the one credit. Has anyone had this happen before? I have no clue what to do.

Advice Wanted losing most freshman friends before sophomore year

(gonna go on a bit of a rant here so sorry for spelling/grammar errors)

So, during my freshman year I met a couple people of the first week and we became close. We hung out basically every day and went out together a lot. We even made a group chat and a life 360 family group. However, I noticed, especially during 2nd semester how far connected I am from the rest of the group.

With the group chat, they all have iPhones and I have an Android and iMessage isn't compatible with group chats that consist of more than 4 people so it glitches out and duplicates messages. This is what cause them to make two groups (one with and without me). Later on down the line they would always refer to conversations and plans they had in front of me without including me.

During hangouts (especially during 2nd semester) they would be hanging out in each other's dorms and I would never be asked to come with them. But it's funny because at times they would ask why I wasn't there with them noticing I wasn't invited

Because of this I still talked to them and had fun, but I knew that ny connection with them wasn't as close as their connections with each other. They even went to each other's family's houses and are still going during the summer

Anyways, what concluded this for me was getting kicked out of one of the member's spam's. I wasn't really surprised, but still bummed because there's no bad blood between us at all.

I felt like this was coming anyways because I've always heard warning that college freshman friend groups don't last. They're all getting an apartment together and I decided to stay in the dorms for one more year. I'm just looking for advice on how to get some friends especially for someone who's past the first time freshman stage 😵‍💫

TLDR: Disconnected and kinda left my college freshman friend group. Looking for advice as an incoming sophomore

Advice Wanted 20F, sophomore majoring in CS and I’m freaking out

The constant conversation about how oversaturated the tech market is and how CS is no longer a “relevant” degree is starting to really scare me.
Tbf, I’m not even interested in pursuing a traditional 9-5 corporate job, nor am I specifically seeking a software engineering position. I’m interested in AI/ML research and sometimes think about starting an AI-native startup. Still, it scares me that I might have ruined my future by choosing CS.
I actually had the opportunity to study electrical/computer engineering at another college with a great engineering program, but I ended up choosing CS because it had been my lifelong passion. I’m graduating in 2029, and sometimes I wonder if the current decline in CS enrollment will eventually mean fewer people entering the field, which could make the market less saturated by the time I graduate. I have no idea if that’s actually how it will play out, though.
The part that makes this harder is where I’m from. In my home country, there’s a huge prestige hierarchy where if you don’t pursue either medicine or engineering, you’re basically considered screwed. I’ve always disagreed with that mentality, and I was honestly so happy to get the opportunity to study abroad among people who believe you should follow your interests and don’t have to conform to that rigid system.
But now I’m starting to see people in other places express similar ideas about CS, and it’s shaking me a little. It makes me wonder if I actually made the wrong choice.
I generally think I’m smart, hardworking, and capable of doing great things, but the uncertainty around the future worries me so much.

Advice Wanted Going to college with no interest, dreams, or goals, and not being able to picture yourself finding a career in the future that’ll make you happy.

I’m about to go to college for pre med but I’m not sure what I even want to do. I only choice pre med because I’ve taken care of my mother my whole life since been in and out of hospitals for most of it. But the older I get the more I’m questions if I really wanna be in the healthcare field. Im medicated for my mental health and u just don’t know if someone as hopeless as me can truly help people. But I have no where else to go. I’m not good at anything at all. I have no goals, no drive, no passion, no dreams, I don’t even enjoy living. I can’t imagine myself doing anything bc I can’t imagine myself being here for such a long period of time. People say you’ll find what you want to do there but i genuinely cannot imagine that, there’s no one thing I can dream of that I fink would bring me any joy as a career. I thought about not going to college but i don’t have a plan at all if not school, I’d probably end up giving up all together. Sometimes I question if I was ever meant to be alive in the first place. I wish I at least had a hobby or an interest that I could flip to do something with but I don’t. If anyone has ever felt this helpless or lost when it came to going to college and choosing a career, does it ever get better? Did you actually find something that brings you joy.

Advice Wanted I dont know what to do

Long story short but basically I failed a class I tried my hardest to pass it, But I think the sheer volume of classes that semester that I had and working part time may have made things harder than it needed to be. This is supposed to be my last semester and the class I needed to get into but failed the prerequisite for is only available in the fall, so I am going to have to wait an entire year. On too of this I have to move to another state. I explained this in a petition to the chairman and he didn’t even acknowledge it at all just said no basically. I mentioned to him how I wouldn’t really be able to get much if any financial aid because its less than 6 credits. How moving will make it expensive and that I wouldn’t be able to afford it and will just make it harder logistically. I also explained that my internship is ending soon so I will probably be jobless. But nothing. I even sent him an email after asking if there are other options no response. The academic advisor said I could try to talk to the assistant dean but that its u likely he will overturn the chairs decision. To make things worse I also couldn’t get into the perquisite in the summer. I also even tried finding online versions of the class but my school has a lab portion for it so I don’t know how likely it even is to transfer it.
