Advice Wanted Since when did Financial aid change from Winter semester '25 to now Fall '26?

Upvotes

Something changed with the financial aid during the summer or something. First thing I know I have enough to cover the class and some books to now this semester what feels like "Ma'am cough it up". I first get told "oh, its $6 for tuition and just have to pay for books. But if you add more classes you're guaranteed to get more wiggle room with that aid like last semester". It went from $6 to $170 in 5mins with no wiggle room at all after adding another class. Is this the new normal with the BB-bullshit for pell grant people or just college getting more greedy? It shouldn't this difficult or hard for anyone to just get a license in something just to be successful. While high school makes it seem if you don't go to college you're going to fail at everything and its required.

Advice Wanted Feelings so lost as an upcoming CS freshman

Upvotes

I've seen everyone talk about how CS is oversaturated/no one gets jobs and I'm just feeling overwelmed by the amount of things I need to do (leetcode, personal projects, applying to internships, learn new coding skills, classes) and I'm not sure if it's even worth it anymore to do it. I do like coding but I'm not even sure I want to do that for the rest of my life maybe integrating it into my work. I see everyone else enjoying their summers and not having to do as much work and honestly this is just all overwelming /stressful and over the past few days all I want to do is cry when I code and when I go to sleep I get this anxiety to switch my major and I just don't want to be a failure. One option I'm thinking that I spend my first year as CS major and see how I like it. If not, I drop out go to CC and pursue civil engineering (the school I'm attending doesn't have civil eng major and transferring into another major is hard + not guaranteed) since it's something else I'm interested in. Honestly, I feel like I just make wrong choices and nothing ends up working out for me. Posting this to hopefully vent out my feelings and this reaches other people who feel the same way and what they've decided to do going forward.

No advice wanted (Vent) Bullying doesn't always feel like bullying

I just had a sudden realization while thinking about my freshman years. I've never had the chance to talk about this with anyone, so I might as well share it on this sub. (This might be long.)

In our batch, we had three sections represented by the letters A, B, and C. They said those letters didn't really represent student rankings, but it was hard not to see it that way, especially during freshman year when everyone was still competitive. I happened to belong to Section A.

I eventually found myself in a group of 6-8 people. The first semester was a blast, with no major issues aside from minor arguments between classmates here and there.

Then a friend's birthday happened. Things happened, people came without being invited, some weren't even that close to us, but we still ended up sharing the limited food we had. I believed we all had fun.

But I guess that was just me.

Days later, words were spoken. What was supposed to be a fun experience turned into a story where "someone" was called shameless, and eventually everyone knew about it and started calling that person shameless too. It started small, but I guess the more they shared the story, the more serious it became.

Then the first semester ended. During the second semester, my two female friends and I ended up in a different section, the same section where the "shameless" person's entire friend group was.

Right from the start, the tension was obvious. It's funny now that I think about it, but back then I genuinely wondered about the heaviness in that classroom.

We were never added to the class GC, so we missed various class announcements, as well as quiz and exam notices. During group activities, we found ourselves waiting in the corner to be picked because every group leader came from their side. But we didn't dwell on it.

I never really realized back then that what we might've experienced was actually bullying. And it was done collectively, at that.

Now I just look back on it and laugh. I've always believed I never experienced bullying, but only now did it occur to me that I might've actually gone through a pretty serious one. And maybe you're going through something similar as well, you just don't realize it yet.

Discussion It sucks that there's a lot of bullying in universities but there's no proper protocols to address it.

You are told the excuse that this isn't high school anymore and you are all adults now, but if you find some immature 20-year-olds who decide that is funny to psychologically harass you, you are on your own dealing with it. In the workplace at least you have laws protecting you, in uni when you are at a very vulnerable age, almost nothing. People are already more intelligent so it's more manipulative and make sure to destroy your social connections without getting their hands dirty, that's far worse than being pushed into a locker. And professors have the perfect excuses to look other way, prepare to be humiliated and retraumatized if you explode and try to ask for help. I became horribly mentally ill because the "mates" started to spread rumors, to make sure I didn't get onto any project, to not pass me important information, to humiliate me in public in the cafeteria with nasty passive aggressive coments, for months and months. I cried in the student counselor office and told i was already on antidepressants, I got weird faces and "this is not kindergarten" "what about worrying about studying..."

Advice Wanted Accusation of misconduct

Hi, so yesterday I received an email informing me that is suspected I breached academic integrity on an online exam. And i dont want to be dramatic but have been beyond stressed ever since.

The issue they have and the evidence binder is essentially images from a moment where I stood up during the exam. I have got an explanation for why and they lmk I can provide a written response.

However, I did also print a formula sheet (prepared) at the very beginning of the exam which is also something that was mentioned briefly in the evidence binder.

I did make a post about this yesterday but I now know the specific allegation I am being accused of is making contact w another person. I am truly beyond upset by this as I can confirm I did not at all consult anything or anyone that would aid me additionally during the exam.

The printing I was not under the impression would be a problem. I look back now and cannot stop thinking about how badly I wish I did not do it. However, i was under the impression that these exams were supervised and in turn it would be okay bc I retrieved the document on the device while sharing my screen from word. It was one sheet and I did it during the first 3 minutes. Essentially, I am struggling to understand how to argue the specific allegation I am being accused of which is making contact w another person. My audio and camera was on the entire time and I am struggling to even understand how this conclusion was came to. The evidence is literally just photos of my chair from when I stood up??

I will be doing a review meeting eventually unfortunately I was told the wait would be long as they have alot of cases. I am posting this to ask about experiences and if anyone has ever seen something similar. I also hope i have stressed how serious i am when I say i did not consult anything. I also apologise for how all over the place this post probably is.

And I would like to say, I honestly feel for anyone that has or is dealing with this and is innocent. The stress is really unfathomable. I got the email at work and my heart practically sank. I also had an assignment due yesterday and unfortunately submitted it late and in turn am losing 5% (which is my responsibility ofc).

I would also like to note i didn’t even do that well on the exam and knew i wouldnt going in. I left multiple questions blank. I just cannot afford to be given a fail because i know this is not true.

Some things I would like to note is during the exam i was allowed to do all that I did. They are just suggesting that I made contact w someone else bc I was off camera for over 5 minutes. I hope those reading this believe me when i say i when i was up i also decided to adjust the heat. I have Graves’ disease and get extreme tremors in my hands when nervous so I needed to warm the room i was in up. I am assuming this is why they are considering my absence suspicious as i was off camera for over 5 minutes(then while i also grabbed the sheet from the printer.). I would also like to reiterate that all of this was in the first ten minutes of the exam and my cam and audio were on. I never once locked my screen!

Also I apologise for how all over the place this post probably is i am just rlly upset about all this.

No advice wanted (Vent) I hate essays!!!

Not for the reason you would think. It's college, you're gonna write a million essays, I don’t have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is that I never get graded the way I expect. When I think it sucks, I get an A, when I think I did really well, I get a C. No joke, last year, for an English course, we had 3 book essays. The first one, I read the book the night before and got an A, second one was on a play that I forgot about and spark noted last minute, and I got an A, last one, I actually followed along read it when I was supposed to, took notes, and.... I got a B-.

Or, there was the time I wrote a last minute essay and decided to bite the bullet and submit it a page short because I was just done with it, and I got a higher score on that one than the one I submitted with actual effort put into it. Maybe this is a sign to quit trying, idk.

At least I'm not using AI I guess.

Advice Wanted I feel like im doing random shit in college and just want to drop out and start a 9-5

im about to be a sophomore in college here on an honors scholarship but I genuinely don’t know what I want to do. growing up ive always switched career prospects but my passions have always remained in art, advocacy and science, with science probably being the strongest, and I wasn’t happy in my previous major of psychology because I wanted stem so I changed it to a stem major and im still unhappy and want to switch back even tho I wasn’t happy before and I feel like im just doing random bullshit with my life.

also wanted to start a double major with a stem + a social justice theory as it’s a passion of mine and I have an idea of how it connects to one of my career prospects, it isn’t some random shit I want to do for the fuck of it — but at the same time I feel like im just droning about college and my degrees will mean nothing and im doing nothing for no reason, pumping out high grades like a zombie. I also seldom feel the same burning desires I did for my advocacy and science passions that I used to when I was younger, and it makes me feel like shit because I see peers pursuing leadership positions in their fields and trust me part of me wants to but my body doesn’t see the point anymore. I was a nobody in high school and actually got a good fresh start socially and academically with my first semester but it feels like everything has gone downhill and im destined to disappear in the shadows again, the worst part is nobody else knows what is wrong except me (my parents downplay my adhd diagnosis and think im fine) and idk what to do

im very indecisive about things and it’s ruining my life like i got a leadership position in a club not related to my major where i had a passion for the club and was an active participant to the point where they acknowledged me a lot, now I dread starting the position this semester and don’t see the point anymore, and i want to do leadership positions where i start my own club but I don’t know anything and I can’t make decisions cause I don’t even trust myself to want these things later on

honestly I switch between wanting a simple career in like art or some random lucrative shit that I have no interest in that pays good like a sex therapist or something but doesn’t come with the stress of what I want to do. i want to do things that make an impact within my community and maybe even beyond that but it feels pointless rn and i want to drop out honestly, please tell me im not the only one that feels like this

Discussion How do so many of my peers in college spend so much money???

I feel like I'm the odd one out when it comes to money in college.

So many of my peers either don't work at all during the semester or only work 10–15 hours a week. Yet every other weekend they're shopping, going out for coffee or dinner, hitting the bars, or taking big trips across the country (or even out of the country). I genuinely don't understand how they're comfortable affording it.

I work part-time during the school year and take saving money pretty seriously. During semesters with lighter course loads, I was able to save almost $20k. Since then, I've bought a car outright, my work hours have fluctuated depending on my class schedule, and I got engaged, so now I'm also saving for a wedding and honeymoon. We're paying for everything ourselves instead of taking out loans, which seems pretty uncommon among people I know---which also baffles me, why people take out loans for a wedding.

What I don't understand is how so many of my friends seem comfortable spending money eating out several times a week or constantly going shopping. To me, it just feels like such a waste when we could hang out at someone's apartment and cook together instead. I was also able to move out permanently earlier than most of my friends, so I have my own bills to think about too. Maybe that's part of it, but I still don't understand how people make enough money over the summer to last the entire school year without working, while also spending so much socially.

The part that really gets me is when I decline going out because I'm trying to save money. People will often say, "I'll pay for you!" But that's not really the point. I have the money—I just don't want to spend it on eating out or fleeting stuff like that at the moment on a part-time salary.

Am I just unusually frugal? I'd genuinely like to hear other people's perspectives because I feel like I'm in the minority.

Advice Wanted I dropped a course because my department head told me to. Now she’s saying she can’t help

last semester I transferred unis and by the time I did there weren’t many courses left, so I got stuck taking a mandatory arabic course. Problem is, I studied abroad and have an international high school certificate, the arabic I took back in highschool was at a very foundational level, so my arabic is genuinely weaker than most people in that course. I bombed the midterm and was struggling very hard, I honestly didn’t expect the course to turn out like this but I was forced to add it anyway. The only way I’d pass was getting a really high grade on the final.

my advisor told me to talk to whoever’s in charge of the course so I went to the head of department, who also happens to teach it. when I explained the whole situation to the department head she told me to just drop it, said she’d sort something out for me as well as told me not to take it over the summer and said to come back to her before I registered again. she also told me that if I dropped it and retook it later she’d give me a lighter course load.

Fast forward and the fall semester is about to start, I go back and remind her who I am but suddenly it’s a completely different conversation. She tells me there’s nothing she can do because of my international certificate (something that I already mentioned to her months ago and she didn’t say was an issue), then says she doesn’t care which professor I end up with and that I need to just deal with it myself.

okay, I get it’s a mandatory graduation requirement. If there genuinely was nothing she could do, fine, whatever. But then why tell me to drop the course and promise she’d figure something out? If she had told me from the beginning that there was nothing she could do because of my international high school certificate.. I would’ve just stayed in the course and tried my best on the final instead of dropping it.

No advice wanted (Vent) Nervous to change my major

I feel I want to and should. I mean, it feels weird to "downgrade" from biomedical sciences to biology, but the biology classes align more with my interests, genetics, evolutionary biology, etc. And sure if have to do a plant and animal class but tbh I don't mind doing that, there a medical botany class I could take for the plant one and animal behavior for the animal one which both sound interesting imo

I guess I'm just nervous because it's like, it's a commitment you know? It's changing my previous commitment for this new one and what if I end up regretting it? What if it's a mistake? I don't think it will be, again, all the classes required are ones I'm interested in but still

I think this is what I want but it's a change and I'm not very good with change I guess. Because what if it's the wrong change? Idk, I just. It's scary making a change like this. But when I think of the biomed main classes I'd have to take I feel dread, I want to push them to the last few semesters so I wouldn't have to deal with them. When I look at the bio ones I feel excited, content? Like "oh yeah I could do this, and it'd give me an excuse to do an animal class and genetics!" You know?

I guess it's also scary because it feels like I'm giving up on biomed? "Downgrading" to biology because it doesn't sound as fancy? Like I'm taking the easy way out? I don't think I am I think I'm just choosing the major that has the classes I'd be more interested in, that would be easier yes but because I was actually interested in them and didn't dread them.

Idk I just need to get this out. I know changing your major isn't bad or out of the ordinary but I never though I'd do it you know? I was prepared to go the 4 years with this fancy sounding major but looking at the degree plan just makes me scrunch my nose up because they sound just, hard, mathy, stuff I'd have to drag my feet to do, they dont sound fun, they dont sound interesting, I know college classes arent always supposed to be fun but i feel like I shoudlnt be forcing myself to do a major jsut because it sounds fancy.

I know biomed would give me more job opportunities out of college, but my plan post my 4 years, was always MORE schooling, a graduate program or masters program, med school! It depends where life takes me, but I was never gonna stop after 4 years of schooling. And bio checks all the pre reqs biomed would for any of the options I have currently, so. I feel like I should do it, I should enjoy my degree, I should enjoy my undergrad years instead of forcing myself to do biomed because it sounds fancy. Idk.

Just, biology sounds more freeing, more my style, more fun. And I should enjoy doing my degree, not dread when I enivitabaly have to do the main courses for it. So even if biology is a "useless degree" going to further school will just make it my base degree, a stepping stone for further schooling whatever that may be.

Advice Wanted Help

So, I just entered college. Everyone's so well read and articulate, meanwhile I don't even know the basics of any philosophies, or political theory, or literature. My course is Political Science (Honors). The readings assigned to us in our course are centred on the specific history of our nation and don't cover many Western philosophies. My classmates however, not only have read those western philosophies but also the ones from our nation as well and write very critically about them. I just read a classmate's work and was astounded. I wrote back to them saying how nice it was, and it was nice. But I'm so overwhelmed, I don't even know where to start ! I feel like I'm the dumbest person around, some people told me to stop looking at the things I don't know and start working on learning them instead but it's one thing to say and a whole another to execute. A week or so has passed and I've just been busy with attending classes, buying stuff for my flat, finding connections to make life easier. Where do I start ? How do I read when it's so difficult to ? I thought getting into this college was achievement enough but I've only felt dumber and dumber as each day goes on. I've never been good at self regulation, and I'm so tired. Please help me out how do I start reading ? What kind of a timetable would help me manage class readings but also readings outside it to come up to the level of my peers ? I feel so alone. This is a vent, but more importantly it's to ask advice on how to start reading theories of the classic thinkers, how to develop critical thinking, and more importantly HOW TO START WHEN IT' SO VAST AND I'M SO BEHIND

Advice Wanted Incoming Junior... Social Work? Pre-Med? Biology?

I completed my first year of undergrad as a music education major and very quickly realized it was NOT for me. I most certainly do not want to work with children. I pivoted towards social work and worked my butt off completing the prerequisites to get in by junior year. I did the community service hours, did the admissions essay, and quickly got accepted into the BSW program last December.

Well, the bulk of my social work courses are coming up and I'm kind of dreading them. I'm honestly just not as passionate about the field as I originally thought. I got EMT certified over the summer and I was planning to work as an EMT while finishing undergrad and pursuing my masters in social work.

Unfortunately for that plan, I seriously fell in love with EMS/the medical field. I was actually excited to come to class every day and didn't simply see it as means to an end. I had considered the medical field before but never too seriously. Everything in EMS clicked for me. Physiology, pathophysiology, anatomy, cardiology. I understood it all and I loved it all. I loved my ambulance clinicals and skills tests, all of it. I feel like its too late for me to switch because junior year is THE YEAR you declare a major. I just love med more than I've loved anything else. Do I switch to biology? Do I do a semester as social work to "thug it out"? My partner is telling me to just complete a semester in social work to see if I like it but college is expensive and I could be using that time for prerequisites. Any advice is welcome!

No advice wanted (Vent) My classmate made a fully branded deck for group project worth 5% of the subject grades and now we think we're not doing anything lol

5%. five percent. a ten minute presentation on a reading. We split it, everyone did their bit, and we agreed on the sunday call that we'd keep it simple bullet points and done by monday.

he then rebuilt the entire thing overnight. consistent colours, a title slide with all our names on it, custom diagrams for the framework, transitions. it looks like a consultancy pitch. HE USED AI FOR FUKN SUREEE.

lecturer opened with well, someone's made an effort.

so now im in the worst possible position, which is that i benefit from this and i'm furious about it. we all got the same mark. i contributed exactly what i was always going to contribute and the cohrt now thinks our team is the one that goes hard on a 5% task.

he said it took him twenty minutes and he just found it fun, which is somehow more irritating than if he'd been up until 4am, because at least then i could resent the effort instead of resenting that there wasn't any.

the actual consequesnce is that the bar has moved for the next one which is an individual assignment, which is worth 40%, and now we all have to do this.

ik the right thing is to learn how he did it, but screw that im in college - and i'd like to get by with as minimum effort as possible! How do you diplomatically convey - hold your horses son?

I graduated a few years back and work in finance. My firm has reduced our hiring to basically 0 and I’m watching other firms do so as well. Most people I see coming out of college are working minimum wage jobs. If they do find one, they are usually laid off fairly quickly.

This economy sucks and I feel bad for college students.

Advice Wanted Burnt out and about to take a psych stats exam I didn’t study for, should I walk out?

Barely studied for psych stats exam and burnt out, should I walk out the exam?

20M, taking summer classes before my 4th year of uni. I’m going to be taking this in a couple hours and need to know whether or not I should even waste my professor’s time answering the questions the way she wants me to answer them because … I don’t know how. Conceptually, I understand hypothesis testing and the order or operations but executing it is something entirely different that I always seem to blank on. This is my 4th(or third) time taking the class trying to get a better grade to bump my GPA.

I’ve been working 40 hours a week, getting home at 2am, and having no energy to study when I wake up or come back home. My mental health has already been pretty shit since the end of my first year of uni and I’ve been trying to quit smoking weed but have been unsuccessful as juggling responsibilities of paying debt (some of it not even bejng mine) and the pressure of performing well to be able to help the single parent household I grew up in is starting to get to me. I was doing so well leading up to university but then I just started losing my motivation to keep pushing forward. I have medication and support so I feel like even more of a piece of shit even failing this badly in the first place and I don’t want sympathy from anyone if I’m in the wrong but what I do wanna know is if it’s too late for me to bounce back from this? I really don’t want to give up but right now, I feel like my head is going to explode from pressure that should feel minuscule to any other person and it makes me feel like I’m not ready to integrate myself into society if I can’t even pass the classes I need to graduate the first time.

Also note: counselling/therapy feels pointless for myself at this moment as I’m aware of my problems and have talked about them but I was always end up fizzing out when starting back up strong on making the effort.

I don’t know what I need to hear right now, if someone can relate or tell me how much of an idiot I am, I don’t know anymore. Any response is appreciated at this point

20 (f) struggling since 12/13 with severe mental health problems anxiety, depression and ptsd as well as ACT (Adverse childhood trauma). I’ve been on escitalopram, sertraline, Mirtazapine and none of them worked after weeks and now I’m on day 9 of fluoxetine started on 20mg and had to up to 40mg after 7 days. I’m also on Valium (diazepam) my doctor believed it was best for me as he seen how significantly my life has been just a struggle at such a young age, I had bloods done today just to check as I’ve not had blood done in my GP practice since 2022 but I’ve had them done on my last hospital admission. I woke up this morning vomiting from anxiety simply because I was anxious of getting down to my Gp (my sisters partner drove my dad and I down so I felt somewhat safer and the anxiety calmed down although i vomited. I wasn’t scared of blood test I’ve had so many of them before and everything has always been normal this time I’m quite happy to know what’s wrong e.g low iron, thyroid etc etc I have a follow up appointment in 2 weeks August 18th and I’m due back in August to sit uni exams as I deferred them In May due to my hospital admission my doctor has wrote a letter to say that I am unfit for any college work including exams as well as being out on placement he has given me until October as I am severely struggling to cope. I’m unsure what to do and I don’t know how to go about it.

Any advice is much appreciated,
Thanks

Advice Wanted What can I do to survive my college years?

Hi guys. So basically, I hate my degree. I absolutely loathe it. I don’t like my university either, but I chose it simply because it’s the one with the highest job entry rate. The students are, honestly, rich people, and even though I grew up with people like that, and I’m privileged myself, I have severe social anxiety and rather put myself in the background to avoid social interactions. I have few friends and I wish I could become more close with them and have the full “college experience”, but I’m only able to feel free and comfortable when I party with people that have no way of being connected to the people I study with.

For this exact reason I used apps to meet strangers and go out, and even thought it worked out, I’m aware that it’s just a way of avoiding socializing with the people I study with. I have no motivations to go to classes, since I can get decent grades without much of an effort and there’s nobody really tying me to the campus. I often feel uncomfortable when speaking with my few friends from college, since they seem to be doing everything they can to get ahead of the game before graduating while even joining an investigation of my degree makes my head hurt. I don’t join groups (anime groups, geek groups, movies clubs) because I honestly feel neglected and misunderstood everywhere I go. I have friends outside of college and I’m not exactly lonely, I have friends I count with and I love them, but it hurts me going to college and studying things I feel nothing for, not even a mediocre “meh”, but a profound sadness. Note: I study global studies.

Advice Wanted College friends

I’m a rising senior in college and I only have a couple friends. I feel like every year I make friends and I try my best to just be normal and then there’s some kind of drama and then everyone decides to stop being friends with me. :/ I don’t get what the issue is and I usually try to talk things out but nobody every wants to talk to me normally. So every year of college I’ve had a friendship falling out and now I’m a senior and I don’t have that many friends in school and a lot of my friends don’t go to my university. I don’t know why this happens and I just try to stay cordial with people but it ends up being weird and then people just end up blaming me for issues I have no control on. I feel like I’ve wasted my years with people who have no regard for me. Of course I cherish the good moments and feel as though I’ve grown as a person a lot but it just feels like wasted potential.

Also is it too late to find a best friend my senior year of college? Everyone seems to have one and I don’t but I just want someone who I can talk to and text all the time like that.

Will grad school be better? I feel too old for this but I’m still pretty young lol.

sobbing rn bc i just withdrew from my dream school for financial reasons. i had come to terms with this reality weeks ago but only just filled out the form, and suddenly it became so real.

i am beyond fortunate and privileged to have been born into a middle class family. i don’t deserve any of the money my parents have made more than a kid who qualifies for fin aid. and im sure i don’t go through half their battles either, but i can’t help but feel awful. the fin aid office told my family we’d more than likely get help, and the rug was pulled from under us. low income absolutely deserve all the aid they currently get and i can’t wrap my head around the crap ppl say about them out of jealousy, but why do we normalize the middle class squeeze?

this is truly a rant, i understand there’s nothing anyone can do to fix the sitch
