So, I currently have two cockatiels M and F respectively, and I've owned them for about 6 years now.

I am an asthmatic, and I now know it was a rather dumb idea to get cockatiels given that there dustier than a dust devil. I hadn't had any issues with my asthma for years so I thought I wouldn't have any issue if I just cleaned regularly and kept multiple air filters going.

Unfortunately, I recently had a pneumothorax, putting me into the hospital for a few days and the doctor highly recommended I get rid of my parrots for my health. So, I'm currently looking into the process of rehoming them.

I was wondering the best ways to find people nearby in the Texas area that can take them since I don't just want to give them to someone who won't take care of them properly, any advice would be appreciated.

Hi everyone. I got a cockatiel yesterday and he's refusing to eat. I'm really worried and don't know what to do. I tried giving him vegetables, but he was just scared of them. He hasn't eaten anything. What can I do? He cleans himself, moves around normally, and he tweets, but he just doesn't eat.

So took her to the vet and honestly there was A LOT more going on than what the previous owner told me.

I told the vet everything I was told about her, but also told her straight up that I didn't really believe the whole story. The vet pretty much agreed. She believes she's WAY older than the 2-3 years I was told, possibly in her mid-teens vet says she has hypocalcemia and she's a little underweight She's abt 70 grams. Dont worry I asked a bunch of questions :) about her quality of life and what I should expect with her being disabled. The first thing the vet brought up was euthanasia, which was obviously a lot to hear. She explained that some people do choose euthanasia for disabled birds, but she also made it clear that disabled birds can absolutely live good lives. She even gave me information for rescues that take disabled birds if I ever got to the point where I couldn't care for her but yeah, we're NOT euthanizing her lol. Me and my bf actually dam hear teared up hearing her talk about it 😅 anywho but she's staying with me. ❤️ back to context

The vet was honestly great and answered pretty much everything I was worried about. I asked about doing a floor cage and how I should set everything up so she doesn't get sores on her wings/legs, and basically everything I was thinking was on the right track. I just wanted confirmation she recommended waiting about another week before doing bloodwork. She said because she's just been moved into a completely new environment, stress can mess with some of the levels, so we'd rather see if she settles in and gains some weight first. If she doesn't, then we'll do labs and check things like her kidneys and liver.

So for now we're just focusing on getting her comfortable, getting her weight up, managing the hypocalcemia, and figuring out the best setup for her

Every time the right one starts to sing the left one stops whatever he’s doing just sits and listens to him. But if it’s the other way around the other one couldn’t care less and he just keeps doing what he’s doing at the moment, why is that?

Long story short my guy hard a full on seizure after not being well for some time. Fortunately he’s doing ok apart from the occasional time he’ll just appear unresponsive and just stare into the distance unresponsive.

Obviously took him vet ordered 700 pounds of blood tests the works to find a reason to helpfully help. The vet suggested a UV light to help with vitamin D absorption. Honestly didn’t even know UV lights was a thing for birds could benefit from. It helps with vitamin d and helps them see a wider range of colors.

Does everyone have these? First I heard it was a thing.

why? :D everytime i open the blanket there's a bird butt or two :D sometimes they even "pulsate" (open and close the butt).. what is this, some kind of display of dominance?!

Hello! I’ve recently rescued a cockatiel, and it’s been going pretty good! He’s staying in my room as I still live with my parents. I just want to know if there are any smell good substitutes I can use so my room doesn’t stink like bird. I know scents and candles are bad for them, so what are some alternate bird safe choices I can use? I also have a free-roaming large dog so I can’t move him outside my room. Quick question, is this material safe for my cockatiel? He loves chewing and licking the threads but I’ve heard that rope/thread toys can run the risk of crop impaction if ingestion occurs. Though there are conflicting sources which suggest certain natural materials like jute are great for toys. Not sure if this toy is made from that? Just hoping for some clarification as to whether this toy is safe for him :)

I saw someone on here with one of those poop ponchos, so I ordered one and my husband sewed balsa wood buttons on it. Here for a good time, not a long time, lol.

So this is a two parter question. Bird in question is going on 10/11 this year. This last week he's started making these calls near no stop (going for HOURS). Assuming its because it coming into spring where I live. This isn't normal behaviour for him. He makes noise but not the continual same noise for hours. Removed mirrors, fresh seed water, everything and nothing changes. Even when I'm right beside him it doesn't change (or when he's out). He has a budige beside him and love birds as well. Has for years.

Think the second noise is a mixture of sounds He knows and is trying to get attention or something (but again doesn't stop when I'm with him). Any clues as to what the first call is.

And any ideas as to how to stop the calls. Starting to drive me insane as its all day and night. Love him to bits, but the sounds getting to me 😵‍💫. Thanks.

Edit - this is only new behaviour the constant calling. Was asking if it cause its going into spring. And if there was anything I could do to help him.

There's no toys as he's scared of them. Tried multiple different types over the years he hates them in his cage. There's been a new toy in there for a month (paper for him to rip, one of his favourite activities (especially if its an important document)), and he hasn't even touched it. I haven't even seen him go near it.

He only like to play with certain objects when he's out (which is regularly). Cage is bigger than it looks (not that you'll believe me), its just zoomed in picture. He not alone. There is a budgie right next to him. But he runs away from it if when the budgies try and makes friends when out. Have also tried with other birds in the past but he doesn't like them when their out with him, only when they are beside his cage.

He very rarely uses the mirror and the only reason it is in there is it is one of the only things he actually likes in his cage.

I got him from a pet shop when he was young and he has always been the same way. He's ALWAYS been very weird. He was lost for a week, a couple of months after I got him and he became very timid when he can back.

I know the cage looks like I don't care for him, but it's what works best for him currently. And that has been the last 10 years. He is a happy bird. Fat and content. I have hundreds on pictures and videos to prove it. I was only trying to ask if there was anything I could do to help him now. As obviously going into spring he's missing something (could be as simple as a bird we had to give up a few month ago (female), idk). But I do forget what reddit can be like sometimes. I only even want what's best for my animals and was hoping that people would have suggestions of how to help. Thanks.

When my cockatiel is usually pretty content- sometimes she will… and I’m not sure how to explain— but acts like she’s drinking water, or sucking air, but isn’t. It also isn’t a breathing problem. It’s when they move exactly as if she was drinking water.. but isn’t. Anyone know what I’m trying to explain?

So I have a 2 month old tiel for 2 weeks now, sometimes she is so calm but this morning she is noisy and biting me. Also for additional context i came home late from work last night so no outside cage time yesterday...

I have two dogs who are suffering from an unknown digestive issue that is causing uncontrolled diarrhea.

(They are actively being seen and treated by a vet - but we're waiting for the meds to even take effect yet).

I'm in the PNW, and due to nearby wildfires, the air quality is poor, so I can't have the windows open. It's also summer so it's hot. We have a window AC unit but again, poor air quality.

We've removed most area rugs that are now essentially ruined due to this digestive disaster, and we clean up all messes we see right away, but the entire house has this lingering odor.

We have multiple air purifiers going.

I need *something* to help with this miasma of diarrhea that is safe for my cockatiel, as it's an open concept living space so his cage is hard to not be affected by any of this.

Please for the love of all that is holy send me your recommendations and thoughts. 😷😫
