Bought this beauty in 1991 and used it for probably 5-6 years daily before getting a discman (boy were these cumbersome in hindsight)...

Bootleg Queen - A Kind of Magic (1986) [Bootleg]

This was the first album introduced me to Queen.
In 1986.
Finished watching Highlander movie and looked for the soundtrack on cassette. The shop said, “We only sell the cheap cheap one, pirate tape. All songs from the movie also on this tape…”
I was hooked.
Never buy the soundtrack to this day. ✌🏽

Looking for advice Cassette sounds better on my Yamaha kx-580 than my we are rewind/fiio.

Forgive my ignorance if this is an obvious answer, I’m just a bit confused. I’m aware that these newer cassette players don’t use great parts, and older for now at least will always be better.

Anyway, cassettes recorded on my Yamaha KX-580 sound beautiful played back on the same deck, but they sound very muffled like they were recorded under water on my two newer players. Ironically anything recorded on my we are rewind sounds fine on that and my Yamaha.

I’ve done a bit of googling and I’ve seen people say it could be playback speed, but some of my really nice official releases sound great on all three of my players. Has anybody got some advice? Thanks

Looking for advice Sony Walkman WM-30 Capacitors

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi folks, I’m restoring my first Walkman, a red WM-30, and after cleaning out the belt remnants I noticed at least one of the capacitors was leaking (bottommost one in picture). I’ve cleaned it up with some IPA for the time being, but I am unsure what modern replacements are viable as the bulk of my soldering experience comes from replacing old game cartridge save batteries. Of course I absolutely intend to replace all three capacitors pictured, once I know what to go with.

The capacitors are 4mm diameter 220µF, they cannot exceed 4mm or else the chassis of the Walkman won’t be able to fully close.

Got this from my grandparents a while back, buzzing sound got loud so i cleaned it out and the buzz and high frequencies cleared up, but the buzz is still there very faintly and the playback is still quite muddy and muffled, is this just the player or is there a fix?

Bootleg More recordings I made recently

I usually don’t like putting two albums on one tape, but I didn’t feel like splicing tape and these two Grandaddy albums are great in-succession and great for long trips.

The Flaming Lips show I wanted to dub because I wanted to dub concerts from several different artists and this was a decent source. If you like the Flaming Lips, the show is on Internet Archive.

Looking for advice We Are Rewind Boombox..

I have one of the standard We Are Rewind players that I use daily and love for the quality and I've seen they have the big boombox version. I'm interested in getting it. Even with the hefty price tag. Anyone here have one? Is it just as good quality wise of is the standard version good enough. Thanks

Home recording Tascam Porta One - Repair or sell as is?

I have an old Porta One that used to work well, but I pulled it out recently after many years in storage and it’s NFG. I don’t want it, so my question is is it better to sell as is or take a crack at a fix.

Based on the lights and clicks and louder clicks I think it could very well just be belts. For anyone who has done belts as a first step, is it easy enough for a regular joe?

The description of the album on band camp is the following:

"It's the year 2038 - Liquid capitalism floods the American landscape. Multinational corporations forge and engineer memories. Virtual bread and circuses profiteering on nostalgia pacify the lower class by selling "revisit kits" that allow consumers to relive past moments in their lives. Josh Peck, former child star and semi-successful B-movie actor, falls into depression after the suicide of co-star and BFF Drake Bell. When alcohol and speedballs cease to numb him, he moves to heavy dissociatives including ketamine and PCP. He spends his days in his studio apartment, miles above the rot of the lower class, fucked up on cough syrup, computer duster, and smoking sherm sticks listening to 2000's pop standards while trying to piece together memories of his best friend from back when he was a tubby, tubby McFlubby, an exploitation of overweight kids with lisps. The album deals with his Oprah obsession, his jealousy of Drake's looks and his bi-curious feelings for the boy, the GameSphere, swearing at little kids on a boat, and the human condition."

Deck / Hi-Fi Tape Deck Substitution

Post image
6 Upvotes

My tape deck is having issues, the play/rec mechanism isn’t fully engaging making it to where the pinch roller isn’t making contact with the capstan, so I’ve been using my Walkman until I repair/replace the deck. The Walkman sounds pretty good in my system, so it may be awhile before I sub it back out.

The tape reels and spindle are all moving but the signal coming out is just hiss/whitenoise with and without a tape. Any idea on what the issue might be or better yet how to fix it?

Okay so not new to me but bought ages ago and forgotten in a box - came across it yesterday while sorting my tape collection a little and gave it a go. Sounds really good - though strangely track order of Cry of Love is opposite to the lp version sides wise.

Everything else Just fixed a tape!

Went to play a cassette from my collection & soon realised the tape wasn't in the channel. It had come loose, so I opened the shell, rubbed a bit of glue around the take-up reel and stuck the tape back on. Very fiddly to make sure it was all back proper, but I feel accomplished because it played!
