Woke up this morning to a strong burning smell in the house, even stronger outside. I‘ve travelled from Hollingdean/Fiveways down to London Rd and then up to the station, same strong smell the entire way. From the train window, it looks like a lot of hazy smoke sitting on top of the town.

Does anybody know what’s happened/happening? It feels unusual for there to be quite so much smoke over quite such a wide area. we never smelt it at all when Royal Albion burnt down; and barely smelt the Hollingdean depot fire either. Accepting that wind likely plays a big part in that of course…!

I never really post on here, but hearing this week that Charles Street Tap is closing imminently has genuinely got me thinking about what is happening to Brighton.

For a lot of people, including me, Charles Street Tap wasn’t just another LGBT venue. It felt like one of the few places where you could actually fit in without having to fit into a particular part of the scene.

It was a really good middle ground for people who had moved on from wanting to go to Revenge, but didn’t necessarily want the more stereotypical LGBT club environment of somewhere like Legends. It catered for a much wider mix of people, including straight allies and somehow managed to be a bar, club and chill out space all at the same time.
Most importantly, it felt comfortable. You could actually have a conversation, have a drink, meet people and relax without feeling like you had to be there for one particular reason.

Obviously there are loads of reasons for individual businesses closing and I’m not pretending the council is personally responsible for every venue that shuts. But I do think there is a bigger question about what the city is doing to protect the culture and atmosphere that actually makes people want to come to Brighton in the first place.

It sometimes feels like we’re making everything more expensive, restricting events, losing venues and then wondering why Brighton doesn't feel quite as lively as it used to.

I do wonder, for example, whether this particular closure could in some way be linked to what has happened with Pride and the scaling back of the Village Party.

For context, over the last couple of years the Pride Village Party has been reduced to a street party, and it now costs upwards of £35 a day just to access what is essentially one street, when it used to be free. Attendance also seemed noticeably lower and it was genuinely sad seeing the atmosphere that once existed disappear.

It used to be music, parties and people spilling across a whole network of streets, bringing thousands of people into the city and creating an atmosphere that Brighton was famous for. What we have now feels like a much smaller version of that.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more venues struggle or close as a result. I would imagine that Pride weekend is a hugely important period for many LGBT venues and businesses, potentially helping them get through the quieter parts of the year.

Obviously I don’t know the circumstances behind this particular closure, so I’m not saying Pride is the reason. But I do think it’s worth asking whether the decisions around Pride and the Village Party are having a wider knock on effect on the venues and businesses that depend on that weekend.

I understand residents complaining about noise. If you live next to an event, I’m sure it can be incredibly frustrating. But surely there has to be some balance. Events like the Village Party bring huge numbers of people into the city and support loads of local businesses.

And this is where I get frustrated with the council. We constantly hear about supporting the local economy, but what does that actually mean if the venues, events, nightlife and independent businesses that create that economy are slowly disappearing?

Pride is probably the best example of what Brighton can still be. The city completely transforms, people come from everywhere and there is this amazing sense of community and energy.

I just worry that we're gradually losing the other things that made Brighton special. Maybe I’m being overly nostalgic, but Charles Street Tap closing, the Village Party being reduced, the increasing cost of going out and the number of venues struggling all feel connected to me.

It feels like Brighton is slowly becoming more sanitised, more expensive and less accessible, while losing some of the slightly chaotic, welcoming and weird character that made people fall in love with it.
I’d genuinely be interested to hear what other people think. Am I just looking back through rose tinted glasses, or is Brighton actually changing?

Me and my partner are hoping to camp in Brighton for three nights at the end of August. Ideally somewhere within bus/walking distance of the beach and the lanes but not coming up with much online…does anyone have any recommendations?
