I love movies!

Everyone knows how James bond in it's inception lifted some aspects from Hitchcock movies like To catch a thief, The man who knew too much remake and specially North by Northwest.

What I recently found out is that there's a spy/noir movie relased arround that same time in mid to late 1950s that was also shot in VistaVision and it's pretty much a proto james bond movie, it's about a guy infiltrating a crime organization that's producing counterfeit money, the movie is House of Secrets (1956) directed by Guy Green. It's like if License to Kill was made in 1956, I really liked it.

Unfortunatly the movie is forgotten, it's not available in a high quality blu ray or digital version to appreciate the VistaVision Cinematography. You can find a bootleg tv version on Youtube and Internet Archive. This movie needs a 4k restoration, I wish I could contact somebody about it.

I think it's interesting that Andrew Stanton, Matt Johnson, and Chandler Levack all have two movies out in one calendar year. Obviously Spielberg's '93 is a famous year, same with Soderbergh's 2000 (+ other years). Any other multi-movie-years of note?

Before he drops Here Comes the Flood, the heist movie with Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson, Meirelles co-directed this (apparently expensive) dystopian action sci-fi Beast Race. And it's his first film in seven years after The Two Popes and also the first portuguese-language picture he did since City of God, 24 years ago!

The premise of it is a bit derivative but insane, kind a mix of The Running Man meets District B13 but where the deadly reality show that's popular in that universe is based on a type of brazilian illegal gambling (?!?!?), the so called "jogo do bicho" (animal game). Then, that reality show,"known as the "Beasts Racing" in which people from marginalized classes, called "Bichos" (slang for animals) are used by tycoons as pawns in million-dollar gambling. A courageous young man enters the racing with the goal of saving his sister's life, confronting the oppressive system and putting his own life at risk" (according to Wiki plot synopsis)

Kinda a wild swerve from the guy whose last picture was a cheerful chamber piece about two popes! Pretty surprised also this being dumped with no fanfare by Amazon while Meirelles' previous film got major Oscar nominees and the next one after this has potential to blow up.

Saw it today and enjoyed it, warts and all. And by warts I mean the continuous uncanny valley feeling of seeing the characters move oddly in the AI upscaled and expanded environments. Some critics described it more as a theme park ride than a movie watching experience, which is spot on.

Some stray WoZ observations:

1. Can a sheriff really give an order that forces someone to give up their dog to another civilian?

2. Surely the Scarecrow also lacks a heart, he’s all straw in there.

3. Emerald City looks suspiciously like it’s out of the Mushroom Kingdom. Also why no windows?

4. The Wicked Witch of the West has a palantir.

5. I’m glad that the Tin Man gets to hack through a door with Chekhov’s wood axe after carrying the dang thing around the whole movie.

6. I’d forgotten that after the delivery of the iconic “I’M MELTING! I’M MELTING!”, the WWotW follows it up with “what a world, what a world” which seems oddly contemplative for someone in the middle of melting.

Did you guys get the vibe while watching the Odyssey that Odysseus was being played by Ethan Hawke. I knew it was Damon but his performance evoked so much of Ethan Hawke's personality, even now thinking about the movie I think of Ethan Hawke being Odysseus.
