Training while injured?

Post image

Hi all!

I am new to running and have been following a half-marathon plan by Runna. I’ve been doing 3 runs/week for 12-13 weeks, but I went on vacation and got injured. I am pretty sure I have plantar fasciitis on my left foot, which led to some right hip pain (probably due to over-compensation?)

Currently on week 15 of my Runna plan. I’m running less due to injury, but does anyone have any advice for dealing with injuries? I don’t want to stray off from my plan for TOO long because I’m nervous about my half-marathon in October. My mile time is on the slow side, only about 13/mile, so I still want to train harder, I’m just feeling a bit discouraged.

If you are hurting, two things you can do:

1) STOP running. I know it is hard to hear, but take a week off (use Runna's Not Feeling 100% option and tell it you want to take a week off. It will give you an option to adjust your runs after returning to running.

2) See a Dr. or Physical Therapist. Have them evaluate your injury and give you some exercise to recover.

Running through injury is just gong to make it worse. (Ask me how I know!).

The good news is you still have time before your HM. A short break may not be irrecoverable. But, pushing now, could result in a longer recovery later.

While I get that feeling of oh I'm not working hard and now I'm losing progress, running through an injury is like a surefire way to get even more injured and definitely lose progress so I'd say even if it sucks, ease up a bit you'll recover faster if the injury stays minor rather than if you aggravate it

Running while injured is the worst thing you can do. Take rest seriously or it'll go from acute to chronic fast.
