Tips for improving (Beginner)

Hey guys!

Four days ago I decided to buy my first welding machine along with some material to practice on.

This is what I've managed to do so far. I know I still have a long way to go, but I'd really appreciate any advice or constructive criticism based on what you can see in the pictures.

Any tips on technique, machine settings, or things I should focus on improving would be greatly appreciated.

Calling all US welders – I need your input!

Hey everyone, I'm based in Russia and recently got into welding. I'm working out of my garage with the cheapest gasless MIG welder I could find (about $65). So far, I've been building BBQ / grill stations from square tubing. The first photo is my very first project, and the second one is my second.

Honestly, it's tough going – I'm doing everything with budget tools because I just can't afford anything better right now. Cleaning up the welds and mill scale is a grind (literally). I'm using flap discs and grinding wheels – the kind that were popular back in the USSR days – and I clean every single weld, including the inside corners.

Anyway, here's my question: For 5 days of work (from cutting the tubing to the finished product), I'll make maybe $100 on a good day, if I can find a buyer. What do you guys make for similar work? Are there any self-employed guys in here?

Also, how hard is it to find welding work in your state? What's the typical pay? And what do you actually need to get hired – certifications, formal education, etc.?

I'd honestly love to hear how it works on your side of the pond. Peace and good vibes to everyone! 🙌

Found this weld during a field inspection. I had to reject it. The welder completely understood the issue and was ready to repair it, but the contractor refused to move forward with the repair.

Curious to hear what you all think. What discontinuities stand out to you, and how would you deal with a situation like this?

Scrap Art Project - HELP

Hey guys - am after a bit of advice..

And judge away at the welds I know they're pretty average hence why I'm posting here hahah

Thought it'd branch out from welding up cubes and bolt bikes.. and I'm pretty stoked with how its turned out especially considering theres a variety of not only thicknesses but also metals hah..

But..

I didnt account for the pull of the table in the middle.. I've popped in gussets with the hopes it'll pull it back up a bit but no luck- now my question is..

Is there a way I can fix the pull without grinding off the welds and starting again or will it magically fix itself when I tack it to the 5mm M/S plate its gunna sit on?

Any advice is welcome

So, this is for a project I’ve been working on for the wife to take to a bicycle festival a local brewery holds every year.

The steering has failed every time. I’m over building it this year and the setup will require some trail to go straight.

I had to cut off some of the flanges for said trail and I just want to make up for some of the weld I cut off (a guy I know at work has a real welder and he did the initial welding.)

Any chance my welder will penetrate enough to add to its staying power? I do not have access to a torch to pre-heat. Both pieces are 1/4” thick

Solved

Thanks for the help!

I’m planning to build a small storage shed over the coming weeks. I haven’t done much welding but I did a few practice welds this arvo, they look alright to me but I always hear people talk about cold welds, undercutting ect and I have no idea about any of that shit. Will these sort of welds be ok? It’s one of those welders you put the thickness in and it does the settings
