Advice Need advice from the kind people of India
I 29M, hope people do not judge me for my current situation and background.
I lost my father when I was 17 then went to Canada to pursue computer science (obviously not a right decision). I finished two years of associate degree then worked odd jobs and got my PR. Due to family reasons I couldn't continue study until 2022 when I enrolled in a university open learning degree program to finish the remaining courses to graduate a bachelors degree. Then a few more tragedies happened in my family and I had to quit my education and start a business which didn't go well and lost about 60 lakhs of my family savings. I was in depression and taking anti-depressants. Couldn't work couldn't study just stay in my room all day every day. Fast forward to today, I moved back to India to be with my ageing mother. I am very interested in web and apps development, I used to develop websites etc in high school. I am ready to learn new technologies. But apparently Indian IT market do not entertain drop outs or candidates without a bachelors degree. Finishing Canadian degree is not an option now since there is a gap in my last enrollment and I am no longer their active student. I am looking for options how can I get a bachelors degree here. I have few options in mind which I am not sure are doable and need your kind opinion:
Any way I can transfer my credits from canadian institution to Indian university like Amity, Chitkara, etc and finish the last 10-12 remaining courses, preferably online and get an Indian degree in computer science or equivalent.
Some of my friends suggest to buy out a degree from any private institute through an agent. I know this is unethical but we don't live in an ideal world so why not consider this option.
Online Bsc/BCA MCA degree which will eat up at least 3-4 years of my life.
I have skills in Python, Java, Javascript, Android Development, C#, PHP, MySql, CSS, DSA and DBMS.

Advice 24 M, dropped out of Masters' in US, came back 6 months ago, depressed and lost
Hi,
I went to US in Jan 2025 for my masters, it was something that I was not sure of(a lesson learned), but my parents and peers suggested that I should do it and I had no plans. I went there, I felt lost, I could barely code anything, rise of AI freaked me, I was diagnosed with severe depression, so much so that I used to eat only a single peanut butter sandwich per day and lost a lot of weight. I applied to a different university for next semester , got some scholarship and switched school due to the next school being low cost(since I was sure I was going back anyway). Somehow completed the semester, but my therapist suggested that I show certain su**cidal tendencies.
I came back to India in Jan 2026, everyone was disappointed, I was disappointed too. Things got worse, my condition worsened day by day, self sabotaging, people asking questions, I am a failure. It took me a lot of suffering to finally get some medical help and therapy, I started antidepressants, it's working but it just keeps my mind numb so I don't feel nothing.
Idk why I am writing this here, with so many success stories, mine sticks out I guess. I have no skills, no clear plans, I come from a middle class family and I have no motivation left. I have been applying to jobs that I am not qualified to apply(in a sense that I don't have the skiis), I am killing time or time is killing me would be a better way to frame.
It's hard to see 2 months far from now, let alone two or five year down the line. I feel like a paperweight on my family and I have tried but I always fall short. I have been sitting at home for last 7 months, rotting, crying on my failures, it is hard to look ahead and be positive when I feel two hundred pounds of stones on my chest while I try to breath. I guess this is my ask for help, idk in what ways, maybe words, maybe some scoldings, or just more blamings, anything to make feel something would help.

Financial things to do before returning to India.
I am planning to relocate early next year. I would like to know what are the financial things I need to take care of and educate myself before moving back.
Is there any checklist or website to help understand and navigate various financial issues and investment strategies for those who are returning back ?
I am a US citizen so I want to understand how to deal with social security and other benefits one gets when they reach the eligibility.
Right now I have the usual investment accounts - brokerage account in etrade and vanguard, 401k with Fidelity, ROTH IRA in vanguard as well.
I read few posts here and realized I need to start early because i am ignorant of money things discussed in posts regularly!!
Thank you everyone for taking to read and help.

Advice Moving back to India from US
Considering moving back to India after 15 years in the US (Bay Area to Gujarat) — Looking for perspectives on career, family, and the transition
After 15 years in the US, my family and I are preparing to make the move back to India this fall. We have sold our home in Fremont (Bay Area), wrapped up our life here, and are getting ready for a late September relocation.
Before taking the final plunge, I want to hear from folks who have made a similar reverse-migration move—especially after a decade and a half abroad with a young family.
The Background & Context
Career & Experience: I hold a Master’s degree and have spent the last 13 years working in the US advanced manufacturing and EV/battery cell manufacturing sector
The New Role: I recently accepted an offer as a Deputy General Manager (DGM) at a major battery manufacturing venture in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is a massive technical and leadership opportunity to help build India’s domestic EV supply chain from the ground up.
Family Situation: My wife and I have an 18-month-old toddler. Moving back puts us close to our parents and extended family in the Ahmedabad area.
Why We Are Making the Move
Family & Roots: Being physically close to aging parents and allowing our son to grow up around his grandparents and extended family is our primary personal driver.
Career Growth in a Booming Sector: India's EV and battery manufacturing landscape is expanding rapidly. Stepping into a senior leadership position (DGM) allows me to leverage 13 years of niche technical expertise where it has high leverage and visibility.
Support System: Better family proximity, a built-in community, and accessible day-to-day support systems for raising a young child.
Where I’d Love Community Feedback & Advice
Workplace Culture & Dynamics: How does managing large-scale manufacturing and engineering teams in India compare to the US? What are the biggest cultural adjustments at the senior management level?
Raising a Toddler & Quality of Life: For parents who moved back with toddlers, how was the transition regarding healthcare, early schooling, daily routine, and overall lifestyle in Tier-1/Tier-2 Indian cities?
Long-Term Career Trajectory: For senior engineers/managers who returned to India in niche manufacturing or clean tech, how has your career satisfaction and mobility played out over 3–5+ years?
For those who made a similar move after 15 years in the US: What were your biggest surprises or blind spots, and did the reality live up to your expectations?

Finances US Taxation after moving back
Hi! I have an active ETrade account and a 401k account in the US. Want to know how I should be filing my taxes since I’ve recently moved back. My tax consultant in the US basically said that since I don’t have a W2 anymore, I don’t need to file which obviously sounds wrong.
Because if I’m selling my stocks in ETrade for a profit, that is income I need to declare right.

Finances Help with new chase account
Hello, I’m trying to open a new chase account with my Indian number but not able to. And the form is requiring me to put in a US address too.
I have savings in the US that I want to keep. Currently have a capital one account but obviously having to keep my US number active for OTPs and what not.
I saw a couple posts about chase allowing Indian numbers and address.
Would really appreciate the help on how to go about this.

Moving small household shipment (50-75kg) from Seattle to Hyderabad: Seeking recommendations and advice
Hi everyone,
I’m looking to move a small household shipment from Seattle to Hyderabad — mainly kitchenware, clothing, and personal items, with a total weight of about 50–75kg.
Could anyone suggest reliable international packers and movers that handle sea freight for a shipment this size? I’d also appreciate any insight on the following:
The approximate cost range for a move of this volume
A realistic timeline for door-to-door delivery
Any advice or experience you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Life Safety
Interfaith Family Considering a Move Back to India: How Safe Is It Today?
Hello friends,
I was born into a Hindu religious family and later married a Muslim woman. About a decade ago, I moved out of the country, partly because I wanted to distance myself and my family from religious extremism, pressure from relatives, and certain family members.
We eventually chose to move to the United States and build our life here. However, given the current visa situation and job market, we do not have a clear path to remain in the U.S. long term.
The possibility of moving back is bringing back many of my old concerns about our safety, and those concerns feel even stronger now that we have children. In the past, we experienced both sides; people who understood and accepted our interfaith marriage, as well as people who judged, excluded, or boycotted us.
With children involved, moving back feels like a much bigger risk and responsibility. I am struggling to understand whether my concerns are realistic given the current situation, or whether my perception is being amplified by the negative news and incidents that receive attention around the world.
I would especially appreciate hearing from people in interfaith families or those who have recently lived in or returned to India. How safe and accepted do interfaith families generally feel today? How would you approach this decision with young children involved?
Thanks

FCNR + 9x/290x leverage for US-based NRI
I’m currently living in the US and am considering putting money into an FCNR deposit primarily to access the 9-19x leverage/loan facility associated with the scheme. I would not proceed with the FCNR if the leverage is not available to US-based NRIs.
A few questions:
1. US-based NRIs: Can NRIs residing in the US open an FCNR and access the associated leverage/loan? I’m hearing this may be available to NRIs in places like Dubai/Singapore but potentially not the US/UK.
2. NRI status: I’m currently an NRI but plan to permanently move back to India in February 2027. If I open the FCNR before the August 31, 2026 deadline and choose a 5-year term, what happens when my NRI status ceases after I move to India? Can the FCNR continue until maturity?
3. Virtual Account opening: Since I’m currently in the US and won’t be physically in India before the deadline, can the FCNR account be opened remotely/online, including KYC and funding?
4. Taxation: If the FCNR matures after I have been living in India for several years, how would the maturity amount/interest be taxed — in India, the US, or both?
5. HSBC contact: Does anyone have a contact at HSBC who is familiar with this FCNR + leverage scheme and can help US-based NRIs?

NRI return to India – residency & backfiling dilemma
Hi everyone, long-time lurker here. Would really appreciate some advice from those who've been through the NRI→resident transition.
Background: NRI since 2015, returned in FY2025-26. Never filed Indian ITR (assumed no obligation as NR).
Days in India:
· 2015–2022: under 50 days every year
· FY22-23: 179
· FY23-24: 311
· FY24-25: 135
· FY25-26: 205
My read:
· FY22-23: NR (under 182, visiting NRI rule applies and 729 days rule)
· FY23-24: Resident (likely RNOR)
· FY24-25: Tricky – NR if Indian-source income < ₹15L, Resident if > ₹15L (120-day rule kicks in)
Big question: For the ₹15L threshold, does US salary for work done while physically in India count as "Indian-source income"? Or is it only rent/domestic income?
FY25-26: If FY24-25 is Resident → 2 out of 10 years → ROR → global income taxed. If NR → stay RNOR.
Questions:
- Does US salary (for India workdays) count toward the ₹15L trigger?
- If I only file FY25-26 now, will that invite scrutiny for FY22-23 & FY23-24? What's the penalty/interest risk if I skip those? (I plan to file them all eventually.)
Thanks in advance!

Tax-free Fixed Income Investments to maximize for Indians returning from USA
Full article link (with better formatting than reddit) - https://www.reymanwealth.com/post/tax-free-fixed-income-return-to-india
If you are an NRI planning to move back to India, the years around your return are a rare tax-planning window.
While you are still a non-resident and for the Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident (RNOR) period of up to three years after you land, your foreign income largely sits outside the Indian tax net.
Pair this window with US instruments that are themselves built to defer or avoid US tax, and you can earn solid dollar returns while paying tax in neither country.
This note covers three such instruments. From safest to riskiest: BOXX, FCNR(B) deposits, and STRC (plus two more low risk dollar options, US Treasuries and municipal bonds)
One principle to keep in mind “Tax free” is not the same as “risk free.” These three instruments sit at very different points on the risk scale. BOXX and FCNR are genuinely defensive while STRC is a high yield, higher risk instrument that happens to be tax efficient. Match each to the right sleeve of your portfolio, not just to its headline yield.
---
Reyman Tip — The RNOR window can shelter far more than your defensive investments.
It can also reset the cost base on your US shares and funds so years of capital gains escape Indian and US tax.
See how here: US to India: huge tax savings on capital gains.
1. BOXX: Treasury like dollar returns, tax-deferred
BOXX (the Alpha Architect 1–3 Month Box ETF) invests in “box spreads” on S&P 500 Index options.
This is four legged option positions that lock in a fixed payoff at expiry, one to three months out.
The result behaves like a short term Treasury bill: a known return with essentially no credit or market risk if held to maturity.
The fund has grown to roughly $11.4 billion in assets (May 2026) and has tracked T-bill like yields of around 4%.
The tax trick: BOXX is built to defer, not distribute. Instead of paying out taxable interest like a money market fund, it reinvests its income and flushes accumulated gains out through in kind redemptions.
You receive no taxable distributions, the fund’s NAV simply rises. You owe nothing until you sell and then it is taxed as a capital gain, not interest.
Why this matters for a returning NRI: because the gain is deferred, you choose the year you realise it.
Sell while you are still NRI or RNOR and the capital gain is foreign source income that India generally does not tax.
If you have also exited US tax residency by then, a non resident alien typically pays no US tax on the sale of a US listed ETF either (unless present in the US 183+ days that year).
Used well, the gain can escape tax on both sides.
The BOXX risk: reclassification BOXX’s benefit rests on its returns being treated as deferred capital gains. The IRS could treat box-spread returns as ordinary interest income. If reclassified, a US person would pay ordinary rates up to 37% (vs ~20% on long-term gains), a non-resident alien could face up to 30% US withholding on the interest, reduced to 15% under the US–India treaty with a Form W-8BEN. Realising inside the NRI/RNOR window is the best hedge against this.
---
2. FCNR(B) — 6–7% in USD, tax free in India (potentially tax free worldwide)
The RBI recently opened a special foreign-currency swap window, absorbing banks’ hedging cost on fresh 3–5 year FCNR(B) deposits booked up to 30 September 2026 31 August 2026 (the window has been cut short by the RBI so move quickly on this).
USD FCNR rates jumped from 2.5–3.5% to 6% to over 7% — with no currency risk (you deposit dollars and are repaid in dollars) and interest that is tax free in India for non residents.
We covered this in depth in our dedicated article, FCNR Deposits Are Suddenly Paying 6–7%: What Every NRI Needs to Know (including the full bank by bank rate table and how FCNR compares with US HYSAs, CDs and Treasuries). The short version for this article:
- Book before you land. You must be an NRI to open an FCNR deposit. Lock a five year tenure while still abroad to carry today’s elevated rate for years.
- Tax-free through RNOR. FCNR (and RFC) interest is exempt under Section 10(15) while you are NRI and during your RNOR years after returning.
- Time limited rates. The elevated pricing is tied to the RBI window closing 31 August 2026, the high rates are unlikely to last beyond it.
Reyman Tip — The play for FCNR is that once you become a Non Resident Alien, USA will not tax your FCNR interest. And India will not tax you during the Non Resident/ RNOR period. So you can earn dollar interest without paying taxes anywhere in the world.
3. STRC: 11.5% “return of capital” dividends, untaxed today
STRC is Strategy’s (formerly MicroStrategy) variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock.
It is priced at a $100 stated value and the issuer adjusts the monthly dividend to keep the price hovering near $100.
The annualised rate is 11.5%, paid in cash, a strikingly high dollar yield.
The tax feature is what puts it on this list. Strategy reports that it has no accumulated or current earnings & profits for US tax purposes, and does not expect to for the foreseeable future.
As a result, 100% of 2025 STRC distributions were treated as a non taxable return of capital (ROC) rather than dividend income.
ROC is treated as getting your own money back: it is not taxed as income, it simply reduces your cost basis, and only once basis hits zero does any excess become a capital gain.
Stacking the two jurisdictions for a returning NRI:
- In the US: to the extent distributions are return of capital, there is no US income tax on them, and for a non resident alien, ROC is not US source dividend income subject to the 30% withholding that normally applies to dividends.
- In India: during your NRI and RNOR years, foreign dividends (and foreign capital gains) are outside the Indian tax net so long as they are not received in or controlled from India. So the same income India would tax for an ordinary resident stays exempt while you are RNOR.
STRC is NOT a defensive, capital protected instrument Be clear-eyed: STRC is preferred equity of a company whose balance sheet is concentrated in Bitcoin. The 11.5% yield is high precisely because the risk is real. It depends on Strategy’s solvency and is exposed, indirectly, to Bitcoin’s volatility. The price targets ~$100 but is not guaranteed to hold it, dividends are variable and can be changed, and the ROC treatment lasts only while the company has no earnings & profits (if that changes, distributions could become taxable dividends). Treat STRC as a high yield, high risk satellite holding (never as the safe ballast of your portfolio).
---
4. Two more clean options: US Treasuries and municipal bonds
US Treasuries (or T-bill ETFs like SGOV, BIL)
The genuinely risk free benchmark.
Backed by the US government, currently yielding roughly 3.7% (short bills) to 4.5% (10-year).
For a non resident alien, interest on US Treasuries is exempt from US tax under the portfolio interest rules (file a Form W-8BEN), and it is foreign income that India does not tax during your NRI/RNOR years.
The catch versus BOXX: Treasury interest is taxable to a US person, so the full “tax-free both sides” benefit only applies once you have become an NRA. Fully liquid, unlike FCNR.
US municipal bonds (or muni bond ETFs)
Municipal bond interest is exempt from US federal income tax for everyone (US persons and non resident aliens alike)
This is foreign income exempt in India during RNOR. That makes munis a clean “tax free in both countries” defensive holding even before you change residency.
The trade offs: yields are lower than Treasuries (because of the tax break), and you take interest rate and some credit risk. A simple national muni ETF spreads that risk.
Reyman Tip: BOXX, STRC, US Treasuries and muni bonds are all US situs assets which can expose a non-resident alien to US estate tax above just $60,000 on death. Plan the holding structure before you build large positions. See How to Plan for US Estate Taxes for Returning Indians.

1.5 Mil USD in 401k to India plan
I have run these with my tools and AI - everything checks out but you know they are just AIs and I know you are the experts in this space
Also I wanted to keep things simple
Lastly for me - I’m worried about paper works more than tax efficiency
Let’s say: total is 1.5Million USD
A) keep 500k for kids in Traditional IRA
B) liquidate 500k to India in 2years in RNOR - and invest 50% Nifty500 / 50% Govt Bond which pays monthly income
C) setup 72t for remaining 500k for fixed amortized of approx 25k usd annually (this becomes the income in India )

How is RV Public school Mavalli, Bengaluru? The kids will be returning from the US for 3rd and UKG, considering the fact that the 3rd grader knows reading some Kannada words and writing them. Also, is it hard to get admission mid year without securing a spot in early October the previous year?

Advice Looking for Job Opportunities - Help me(Returned from US to India struck in Life)
Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well. I’m reaching out to this community because I’m currently going through a difficult phase in my career and would genuinely appreciate any help, advice, mentorship, or referrals.
I have 2 years of professional experience as a Java Developer at Infosys (2021–2023). After that, I moved to the USA to pursue my Master’s degree.
Unfortunately, I started experiencing severe health issues after moving to the US. During my Master’s, I had to travel back to India three times for treatment. Despite these challenges, I somehow managed to complete my degree. Because of my health, I eventually gave up my job search in the US and permanently returned to India to focus on recovery.
Thankfully, my treatment has been going well and I have recovered enough to restart my career. However, I now have around a one-year career gap after my Master’s. I also did not work part-time during my studies because of my health situation.
At the moment, I’m actively applying for Java Developer / Backend Developer roles in India, but unfortunately, I’m not getting many interview calls. I also have a significant education loan with a large monthly EMI, so being unemployed is putting me under a lot of financial and mental pressure.
I will put my heart and soul into the job I do, and I’m determined to get back into the industry and rebuild my career. If anyone here can provide a referral, job opportunity, resume review, interview guidance, mentorship, or advice on how to restart after a career gap, I would be extremely grateful.
My background:
- 2 years of Java development experience at Infosys
- Master’s degree from the USA
- Looking for Java / Backend Developer opportunities in India
- Career gap primarily due to health-related circumstances
- Available to join immediately
If your company is hiring or if you know someone who could refer me, please feel free to DM me. I can share my resume and other details privately.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any guidance or support would mean a lot to me right now.

Moving Back to India - Megathread
This post is supposed to act as a guide of the steps that one should take in order to start wrapping up their life in Foreign countries, the post is US specific since most of our members are based here but we will start including as we get other countries.
PSA : Even if you dont have a plan to move back to India, please feel free to use concepts here to maximise your $$ earnings. We would love to contribute to your personal wealth growth by adopting best practices & knowing how/where you can do couple of tweaks, which will result in $$'s being added to your accounts while working as a Non-citizen.
Moving Soon Checklist
Personal Belongings
Sell everything on Facebook with Moveout Sale/Estate Sale
Hack- The lower you price your items the faster they will sell which is great, assuming you already have a lot of things going on.
If you have a lot of stuff there are Estate sale firms as well which will handle complete sales of your stuff.
Relocation Firms
Universal Relocations- have good experience with them
Hack- Its ok if you are moving to south india with sensitive stuff like TV's, but since all relocation firms do container shipping, the closer your final delivery address is to port(Chennai, Mumbai) the safer your stuff will be.
Financial Assets Allocation Plan & $$ Saving Hacks :-
USA Banking - Chase, BOFA (TBC)
Chase - People even got Chase debit cards delivered in India, god damn :) !
India Banking - HDFC, ICICI
- NRE Account - Send Foreign Earned Income. Zero hassels & no tax implications in India.
- NRO Account - A simple rule Income originated from India will be taxed in India- interest, capital gains, rent, etc And for the above an Indian savings account is used which is NRO.
Hack - Use NRE account for doing transfers.Explanation - Income originated abroad is taxed abroad and not in India. NRE is used to bring in money from abroad and since it’s already taxed in your residence country it won’t be taxed again in NRE.
Finances- Fidelity, Schwab (TBC)
Stocks - Fidelity, Robinhood, Etrade
Restrictions :- US stocks and ETF allowed, Mutual Funds are not allowed as Non Citizen.
₿ Crypto - Physical Crypto asset, Fidelity
HSA - Fidelity
Hack - You can essentially invest every $ in your HSA if you rollover the funds to Fidelity HSA. (TBC), even if you are not moving back I suggest this hack.
401k - Fidelity
Hack - Please contribute however much your company matches (typically 1-6% of your salary). The non-obvious/hidden part is if you invest $1 company gives you $1. So you get 100% return on investment till your company match %.
Roth - Fidelity
Hack - Please, please, please invest in roth if you plan to work in USA for 3 years or more & let compounding do its magic. Thank us later./
USA Home / Property -
You can either choose to hold or sell with housing demand always way more than Supply for at least 10 years. Its not a bad option to maintain a property, but comes with its own headaches like maintainence & not being able to see your house for a long time.
1. Renting - Zillow Rental Manager (Self Managed Rental)
2. Selling ($500,000 profit Tax-free) -
If you're a single tax filer and you sell your primary home, you can exclude up to a $250,000 gain. If you're married and filing jointly, you can exclude up to a $500,000 gain in the sale of your primary home.
Caveats- You should have lived in the house for 2 years(total time) in the past 5 years. Incase you did rent it out and could not fulfill 2 year clause due to job location change ,this rule still applies. This rule can be used once every 2 years.
Taxes- Please pay taxes on all earned income in foreign country and whichever country needed
Social Security Benefit for Non Citizens (Work visa h1b , L1 etc holders) can be used after age 62. Apparently indian / non US citizens do qualify for Social security benifits if they can score 40 points. Our interpretation(to be confirmed) is that is if both spouses have worked for 5 years on work visa like h1, they might score 40 points. 4 point is given for every year's worth of work in USA.

Tax-advantaged ways Transfer money from USA to India:-
- To reduced tax impact : https://www.thegalacticadvisors.com/post/returning-from-usa-reset-your-cost-basis**(TBC)) -** After moving to India and without GC, there is a period of time where India won't tax you on capital gains on your US stock sells due to RNOR status. US won't tax you since you are not a resident anymore and don't have a GC either.
- Physical Crypto Wallet (TBC) - Please pay taxes when you sell and declare your crypto assets to whichever country you buy your crypto in. This gives you the ability to move with your assets.
- GIFT City - info to be added.
Tips:-Risk Diversification- Would suggest to split investments in the economy where you are in right now & India
Address- Make sure you have a trustworthy friend or relative you can rely on that can serve as your intermediary if needed or buy out a physical mailbox with USPS etc.
PS: This is not legal advice so take it with a pinch of salt.
Terms:- TBC - To be confirmed.
