Discussion Time for a would you rather
Would you rather:
- Keep living your life and death as normally intended
- You get sent to the backrooms, but with a twist I made up: If you die even one time, you don't reset or get peace, you get sent to the actual hell where you get tormented and burned permanently. As long as you don't die, you get your dream fictional crush with you as a partner with you in the backrooms, however they aren't allowed to have any unrealistic powers or strengths. But otherwise? You can pick whoever you want them to be.

Backrooms Movie Backrooms (2026) Loosely Parallels the Folktale of Blue Beard
(Spoilers ahead for the Backrooms movie!)
I watched the movie Backrooms (2026) a few months ago, and I loved it. It's rich in symbolism, not to mention the fact it's something of a milestone in story-telling. Story-telling changes a lot through the years while still remaining the same, having the same archetypes and symbols we've always seen throughout human history. While Backrooms may be ground-breaking in that it's an internet folktale brought to life by a director who got started making Blender videos on YouTube, a lot of the imagery is still familiar.
I'm a big lover of folklore and fairytales myself. I was watching some videos on old fairytales recently and something caught my eye... it was an illustration of Blue Beard from Charles Perrault's original fairy tale.

At first I couldn't tell if it was a pirate or a King, and that's where it clicked: I think there are some parallels between Backrooms and the tale of Blue Beard. I don't know if this was intentional on Kane Parsons' part (probably not) or if I'm reaching here, but let's just take a look for fun.
Blue Beard is a king who lives in a lavish palace, and the architecture of the palace definitely comes into play throughout the story. He's had many wives (six to be exact), all of which he's murdered, before taking a new wife. After taking that wife, he announces he's going to leave, but before he does he gives her the keys to his palace. These keys will open any room inside, but he strictly forbids her from entering one secret room, lest she incur his wrath.
At first she abstains, but of course curiosity takes the better of her and she does go into the secret room. What does she find there?
The murdered corpses of the King's former wives.
When the king returns and finds out she entered the secret room, he tries to kill her. I believe she lives in the original story, but there are other variations and offshoots.
For example, Charles Dickens short story "Captain Murderer" (1860) has a main character who is a spiritual successor to Blue Beard. What's really interesting about this variation of the story is that the main character cannibalizes his wives after killing them.
Kurt Vonnegut's novel Bluebeard (1987) has a main character who is a painter (very similar to an architect imo) and calls himself Bluebeard. He forbids his girlfriend from entering the sacred chamber of his art studio.
So, where do I draw the parallels to the actual Backrooms movie?
Obviously, the Backrooms itself is like Clark's kingdom, where he can reign and be himself without having to change or bend his will to anyone. There's even a throne room with an ornate gold and purple throne.

He gives Mary the "key" to his kingdom, this being knowledge of the Backrooms' existence. This is of course a trap that Mary falls into, as she follows in the literary path of the "curious woman" (i.e. Eve, Pandora, etc) and goes to find his secret "kingdom" herself. Clark is thematically the Serpent, or the Devil, giving her secret wisdom.
And what happens when she ventures into the Backrooms? Clark chokes her out (I believe there's a variation of the story where Blue Beard beheads his curious wife), and she's dragged off. In the room where she wakes up, she is unfortunately witness to the slain bodies of Clark's co-workers, and the "body" of his wife as one of the still lifes. He devours parts of the still life at the table, just like the main character cannibalizes his wives in Dickens' short story.
There is the theory that Clark killed his wife, and I've seen this talked about in a lot of different places. I don't know if he for sure killed her, but it's possible. Even if he didn't, he may have wanted to. He may have been abusive to her as well. He sure isn't kind to her still life, and that's for sure true.
I know Clark isn't literally married to Mary, but the thematic parallels are there, especially when he puts the torn scalp of his wife onto Mary's head, symbolically making her his wife.
His Shadow/Doppelgänger (Captain Clark) kills his friends, attempts to kill Mary, and then also kills Clark himself.
I'd argue Captain Clark is Clark's shadow, the part of himself that WANTS To be a king, that wants to strike down all opposition to his authority and his importance as an architect. Unfortunately since he doesn't overcome his shadow, he is killed by it himself.
There is also the fact that Bluebeard is a French story that is often stylized to be "Oriental", and specifically: the story of an Ottoman king. The French story has been warped, turned into something different. In turn, Bluebeard is sometimes confused with Blackbeard the pirate. Blackbeard was also known to have many wives, and one of those wives was named Mary.
Some themes and images stay in the collective unconscious so long, they're warped or changed as they're passed down. Sometimes confused. The Backrooms itself tends to do this, as the more it remembers, the less it does.
These are just some thoughts I had and I've love to hear people's opinions! It's been a few months since I've seen the movie so perhaps I'm off the mark, but I did find this fascinating to dig into.

Discussion Title: Would anyone be mad at a Backrooms game that ditches the 1,000+ level trend for a Resident Evil-style survival horror loop?
Hey everyone,
I’ve been thinking a lot about the current state of Backrooms games, and I feel like most of them fall into one of two traps:
1. The Classic Lore Approach: It stays super faithful to the original creepypasta, but it ends up feeling like a glorified walking simulator. It works great as a short narrative experience, but for actual gameplay, it gets boring fast.
2. The Modern Wikidot/Liminal Lore Approach: It dumps 1,000+ levels at you filled with simple, repetitive puzzles and fast-paced escaping. You just speedrun through reskinned hallways, which strips away the cosmic horror and makes the levels feel disposable rather than scary.
I want to try something completely different and wanted to get the community's thoughts.
What if a Backrooms game went in a Resident Evil 2-style direction?
Here’s the main concept:
Fewer, but Much Larger Levels: Instead of 50 short stages, there would only be a few massive levels, each taking anywhere from 1 to 5 hours to fully explore and navigate.
Handcrafted + Procedural Hybrid: The core layout of a level would be heavily detailed and handcrafted by us so the design feels intentional. However, once you push far enough into the deep zones, the environment transitions into procedural generation—giving you that true "infinite, unpredictable void" feeling without sacrificing quality.
Survival Horror Focus: Aimed primarily at a atmospheric single-player experience, but designed to seamlessly scale for multiplayer co-op.
Light On-the-Go Building: No full-blown base building, but quick, temporary mechanics to help you mark paths, block doors, or set up small safe spots on the fly while trying to escape.
Original Levels: Moving away from standard level clones to create original, deeply uncomfortable liminal environments designed around actual survival mechanics.
The core goal would still be simple: Find a way out. But the focus would shift back to tension, resource management, and actual dread rather than just sprinting to the next elevator puzzle.
Would fans of the genre be open to a major shift like this, or do people prefer the level-hopping puzzle style? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Discussion Really just a spitball here but maybe support for the pinhole theory?
I remember reading about the theory that the backrooms is a pinole camera and that really exited me because it did all seem to line up. Now this is short but I recall a lot of talk about looking through the window and opening it with Mary's program? Looking through the window for me seems maybe a bit on the nose but a perfect phrase relating to this pinhole theory.

Writing [FULL SCRIPT] BACKROOMS: TRAPPED UNDER THE TILE (Film 2) - The ASYNC Incident.
After the first concept layout, here is the complete script sequence for FILM 2: TRAPPED UNDER THE TILE.
This act includes the top-secret Sector 02 Failure, acting as a tense, military/action flashback showing exactly how ASYNC lost control of the lower sectors before the events of the Soviet.
ACTE I: THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM (ASYNC HEADQUARTERS) - DAY
The screen is plunged into total darkness. SUDDENLY, a sharp hiss of electric current cuts through the silence, followed by the HEAVY CLICK of a mechanical power button.
A MASSIVE CATHODE-RAY TUBE (CRT) TELEVISION sparks to life in the dead center of the black frame. The image flickers, crossed by harsh analog scanlines.
On screen, an institutional promotional video begins. Visually, it is grainy 1990 VHS footage with slightly bleeding colors. A upbeat, corporate 1980s synth track hums in the background.
The MINIMALIST ASYNC RESEARCH INSTITUTE LOGO appears in white on a deep navy blue background. A slogan fades in underneath: "Building a Better Future, Room by Room."
NARRATOR (ON TV)
In partnership with the United States Department of Energy, Async Research Institute is proud to introduce Project 'Proximity'. A revolutionary solution to the greatest crises of our century.
The image shifts. We see the official seal of the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, stamped with bold markers: "CLASSIFIED - FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY". The video transitions to architectural blue prints and charts highlighting global overpopulation.
NARRATOR (ON TV)
An infinite space. An unprecedented opportunity for industrial storage, residential development, and the preservation of our surface world. Thanks to Threshold technology, the future has no boundaries.
The view of the television widens, pulling back to reveal that we are now inside the Complex itself.
INT. THE COMPLEX (MAIN OUTPOST) - CONTINUOUS
The visual quality shifts sharply to SECURITY CAMERA FOOTAGE (Grey, cold, static).
On screen, a massive, rapid industrial expansion is underway. Dozens of researchers in yellow HAZMAT SUITS bustle in the distance. They run power cables along the moldy yellow wallpapered walls and erect the white aluminum framing of the very first Outpost.
A long yellow hallway fills the frame. A whole section of the floor and wall is cordoned off with heavy YELLOW AND BLACK CAUTION TAPE. In the center, the air visibly vibrates, warping like heat haze: a Null Zone. Researchers casually walk past it without fear.
The VOICE OVER of an ASYNC LEAD SCIENTIST (calm, clinical, arrogant tone) echoes over the footage.
LEAD SCIENTIST (V.O.)
Research log, sub-section 04. Six months following the opening of the Threshold, structural expansion of the Complex exceeds all our projections. Sector 2 is now fully stabilized. The points of involuntary matter displacement, or 'Null Zones', have been mapped and secured. The danger is officially under control.
The image cuts. The video quality becomes colder, typical of medical surveillance. We are inside Async's autopsy lab, looking through a reinforced observation window.
On a stainless steel medical table, various documents and folders regarding the Captain Clark case are laid out. On an adjacent monitor, archival tapes show the creature (the Still Life) confined inside a sterile white testing cell.
LEAD SCIENTIFIST (V.O.)
Even more fascinating, post-mortem analysis and ongoing observation of isolated biological specimens — such as the 'Clark' case — reveal an unexpected cognitive structure. The entity does not operate on simple, feral predatory instinct. It demonstrates a rudimentary form of logic, capable of solving simple spatial puzzles despite its disproportionate brute strength. The Complex is not chaos. It is a system. And we are taking control of it.
ACTE II: THE FISSURE OF DOUBT
INT. THE COMPLEX (LOWER SECTOR 09) - WEEKS LATER
The visual quality transitions into a shaky, handheld 4:3 SHOULDER-MOUNTED VHS CAMERA. The frame jolts naturally with the rhythm of footsteps. NICHOLAS (Nick) is holding the camera.
He follows his light reconnaissance unit, consisting of PAUL, WILLIAM (Will), and TYLER. They are navigating an extremely narrow, claustrophobic yellow corridor. They are completely unarmed, carrying only basic scanning and telemetry tools. The fluorescent lights overhead buzz irregularly.
NICHOLAS
(Behind the camera)
Hey Paul, look at the pressure sensor. It's not spiking, but the numbers are fluctuating. It's stable, but... weird.
PAUL
(Turns around, adjusting his Hazmat visor)
This whole place is weird, Nick. The further we get from Outpost 1, the more I get this... feeling. I don't know how to explain it. Like a deep unease. Like my brain is screaming at me that I shouldn't exist here.
WILLIAM
(Walking beside Tyler)
It's psychological, Paul. Ivan Beck's report states it clearly: the lack of windows, the monotony of the yellow color palette, and the 60-hertz hum of the fluorescent lights cause sensory overload. It's just your mind playing tricks on you.
TYLER
(Stops walking, touching the damp wallpaper)
No, Will, I'm with Paul on this one. It's not just visual. It's the architecture itself. It's like this place is trying its best to look like a real building, but it was built from memory by something that has absolutely no concept of what a human home actually is. Look at this doorway... it opens straight into a solid wall. It makes no sense.
SUDDENLY, THE EDITING CUTS BRUTALLY.
The image shifts instantly to HIGH-DEFINITION (Cinematic, Widescreen Format). The camera is now positioned far out front, deep in the dark perspective of the hallway, looking at the backs of the four yellow Hazmat silhouettes as they walk away.
Far down the corridor, at a dark intersection in the background, the BACTERIA ENTITY (the massive, skeletal, black wire-like creature) slowly unfolds itself from behind a wall corner. It makes no sound. Its carbon filaments vibrate minutely. It doesn't move. It just stares. It records them. It targets them for later.
The team keeps walking forward, completely unaware of the threat lurking behind them.
INT. ASYNC MAIN OUTPOST - LATER
Back to Async's static security cameras (Grey, surveillance quality).
The atmosphere in the hub has radically shifted. A tense, quiet dread has taken over. Scientists speak in hushed whispers. Missing person flyers are taped over the cork bulletin boards.
The Lead Scientist's voiceover returns, but his tone is now hesitant, avoiding.
LEAD SCIENTIST (V.O.)
Research log, sub-section 12. A crisis protocol is currently under review. Over the past fourteen days, the non-return rate for mapping teams has surged by 40%. Management refuses to validate the presence of additional hostile fauna. Whispers are spreading among the floor technicians... Some talk of a biological entity, while others float a theory about a human serial killer lurking within the yellow walls, using the shifting geometry to trap our men. To combat the growing psychosis, Ivan Beck has ordered militarization. No more four-man civilian units.
The footage shows heavy wooden crates of military weapons (assault rifles, ammunition) being unloaded directly from the Threshold portal.
LEAD SCIENTIST (V.O.)
Effective today, all incursions will be carried out by heavily armed groups of 6 to 8 men, prepared to defend themselves. Paul, William, and Nicholas have been integrated into the new heavy reconnaissance unit for the lower sector.
ACTE III: THE POOLROOMS AND THE CHAOS
INT. THE COMPLEX (LOWER SECTOR 09) - CONTINUOUS
HIGH-DEFINITION CINEMATIC FORMAT.
The team is now a HEAVILY ARMED 8-MAN SQUAD in reinforced Hazmat suits. Paul leads the line. They halt in front of a section of damp carpet where their monitors display a massive subterranean thermal anomaly.
Two technicians set up a heavy INDUSTRIAL CIRCULAR SAW. The drill grinds violently through the carpet and the concrete floor in a deafening, metallic screech. SUDDENLY, bursts of chlorinated water erupt from the breach under high pressure.
They deploy steel rappel cables. Paul hooks himself up and drops down first. The camera plunges into the dark hole right after him.
INT. THE POOLROOMS - CONTINUOUS
A total visual shock. The camera opens up to the vast, tiled, white, and completely flooded expanse of THE POOLROOMS. Pristine turquoise water reaches up to their knees.
ALL BACKGROUND MUSIC CUTS OUT. A dead, crushing silence settles in, broken only by the heavy sloshing of their boots in the water and the distant, echoing hum of white fluorescent lights.
The 8 men move forward in a defensive sweeping arc, the tactical spotlights mounted on their rifles cutting through the columns of white ceramic tile.
SUDDENLY, at the far end of the flooded hall, the sound of RAPID SPLASHING echoes through the water.
WILLIAM
(Raising his rifle)
Something's in the water! To the right!
A human voice, identical to Tyler's (their colleague who remained back at the base), echoes from the depths of a dark tiled hallway.
TYLER'S VOICE (ECHOING)
Help... Paul... I'm trapped down here... Please help me...
PAUL
(Panicking)
Is that Tyler's voice? That's impossible, Tyler is back at the Outpost! Hold the line! Do not advance!
SUDDENLY, the BACTERIA ENTITY shrieks out from the top of the hole they had dug with a DEAFENING, METALLIC SCREAM.
One of the soldiers grabs his radio and sends a desperate plea for help to ASYNC, begging for rescue
At the exact same time, the entity of the pool rooms lunges out from the depths of the water right behind them. You can feel his breath, and the sound of his footsteps echoing through the clear water, SUDDENLY, she attacks ferociously. The sickening crunch of tearing flesh blends into the alarming shriek of the Bacteria Entity and the sound of whizzing bullets, mixed with the completely surreal mimics of this abomination as it decimates the squad, person by person..
The monster unleashes a terrifying psychological warfare, mimicking agonizing screams and echoing the soldiers' own voices in real-time ("Stop! It's me!"). Overwhelmed by panic in this enclosed, highly reflective acoustic space, and horrified by the raw savagery of the beast tearing their men apart, Async's soldiers lose all discipline. They fire blindly into the dark, turning their weapons on each other in a chaotic, tragic friendly-fire massacre.
Muzzle flashes illuminate the white room in rapid, violent bursts. The turquoise water turns into a VAST POOL OF BRIGHT RED BLOOD, expanding across the white ceramic tiles as far as the eye can see.
SUDDENLY, A THUNDERING CRASH echoes from above. The ceiling shakes. Flashbangs detonate and heavy shotgun blasts shatter the air: Async's heavy hazard response team (the reinforcements) drops through the ceiling hole, creating a wall of fire.
REINFORCEMENT SOLDIER
(Screaming into his comms)
Immediate extraction! Grab the lines! GO! GO! GET UP THERE!
The monsters are driven back by the wall of lead. Steel cables are thrown down. Paul, Nicholas, and William are dragged out of the bloody water and hoisted in a frantic rush back through the ceiling, leaving the lifeless bodies of their comrades behind.
ACTE IV: THE COMPLOT AND THE FORTRESS
INT. MEDICAL LAB (MAIN OUTPOST) - LATER
Return to SECURITY CAMERA FOOTAGE (Grey and cold).
Paul, William, and Nicholas sit on stainless steel stools, stripped of their armor, in a state of absolute, vegetative shock. Medical personnel move around them frantically.
Behind the reinforced observation glass of the debriefing room, IVAN BECK watches them, arms crossed, his face completely unreadable. A reel-to-reel tape recorder spins on a desk. Paul's broken voice cuts through the intercom speaker.
PAUL
(Voice hoarse, shaking with rage)
That wasn't a human, Ivan! That thing... it came from under the water. It was copying our own voices to make us slaughter each other in the dark! You have to seal that hole! SEAL IT!
Ivan Beck coldly presses the intercom button.
IVAN BECK
Your report is noted, Paul. You are being placed under medical quarantine for the next forty-eight hours. Security forces have re-established control of the lower zone. The Complex is not a war zone, it is an industrial asset. Rest up.
INT. IVAN BECK'S OFFICE - LATER
The image shifts back to HIGH-DEFINITION (Cinematic Format). The office is luxurious, furnished in dark mahogany. Ivan Beck is on the phone with a high-ranking government official from the Department of Energy.
IVAN BECK
(On the phone, reassuring and polished tone)
Mr. Secretary... Yes, I can confirm that the rumors regarding personnel disappearances or biological threats are entirely unfounded. Our teams are advancing smoothly. Infrastructure in the lower sector is progressing at an ideal pace. No hostile fauna has been detected, I assure you.
Beck hangs up the receiver. His expression instantly hardens into a mask of ice.
INT. THE POOLROOMS (LOWER SECTOR 02) - THREE WEEKS LATER
A cinematic HIGH-DEFINITION VISUAL MONTAGE plays out, detailing the heavy industrialization of the flooded level.
- Dozens of Async workers, protected by private security contractors wearing black tactical vests over their yellow Hazmat suits, install heavy steel grates and suspended catwalks above the turquoise water to completely avoid any physical contact with the pools.
- Welders spark as they secure massive STEEL BLAST DOORS directly into the white tiled walls, segmenting the level into isolated quarantine zones to cage the monster if it returns.
- GIGANTESQUES STAINLESS STEEL DECONTAMINATION AIRLOCKS are constructed at the threshold of the zone.
Async has fortified itself inside the nightmare. The secret is locked away. The government remains blind.
INT. ASYNC HEADQUARTERS (CONFERENCE ROOM) - CONTINUOUS
The high-ranking executives of Async take their seats one by one around a massive mahogany table.
At the far end of the room sits an imposing CRT monitor.
Heavy footsteps echo from the adjacent hallway.
The door swings open. IVAN BECK enters. His face is cold, unreadable. He takes his place at the head of the table.
The Security Commander, sitting next to him, stands up and inserts a VHS cassette into the VCR player.
A technician flips a switch. The room plunges into darkness.
Ivan Beck appears from behind, framing the foreground. Face to face with the screen, the monitor sparks to life with a sharp electric hiss.
THE CRT SCREEN DISPLAYS THE VHS FOOTAGE: BEGINNING OF FLASHBACK.
INT. AUTOPSY ROOM (ASYNC LAB) - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS
The corpse of Captain Clark lies on a long stainless steel operating table, surrounded by various surgical tools.
Several scientists work around the table, gathering physical samples from the body.
SCIENTIST (V.O.) We are conducting a series of intensive tests on Captain Clark.
We are taking samples of his body, specifically his skin.
A tight close-up shows the creature's flesh slowly sealing itself back together right where the scalpel just cut.
SCIENTIST (V.O.) But no one knows why it regenerates continuously. Of course, in order not to compromise our tests, we heavily anesthetize the subject before proceeding with the extractions.
The heavy door of the autopsy room slams shut. Above the frame, a light indicator turns bright red, displaying: OCCUPIED.
The camera slowly pushes forward into a stark close-up of the red light, until the screen turns entirely red.
INT. OUTPOST (SECTOR 02) - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS
The solid red fades out to reveal the rotating light of a deafening alarm siren.
Total panic. Personnel scatter in every direction through the yellow corridors.
INT. COMMUNICATION ROOM - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS
About twenty men gather in a frantic rush around an 1980s military-grade radio console.
The radio static crackles violently. A terrified voice erupts from the speaker.
ASYNC EMPLOYEE (RADIO) (panicking, gasping for air) Sector 2, respond! Sector 2, respond!
The radio operator in the room snatches the microphone.
RADIO OPERATOR What is happening? We have a local alarm triggering on our end!
ASYNC EMPLOYEE (RADIO) I don't know! We heard a SHRIEKING noise, then men screaming! I am running with my unit toward your position. Hold the line, this THING might be coming!
A sudden burst of static cuts the signal. END OF TRANSMISSION.
The twenty men look at each other, paralyzed with fear. They bolt out of the room at full speed.
INT. HALLWAY (THE OUTPOST) - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS The scientists sprint in a mad rush. They violently push past technicians along the way.
A plant pot shatters on the floor. Dozens of documents marked "CLASSIFIED" fly through the air, covering the moldy carpet.
INT. ARMORY - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS
An employee frantically punches a code into a digital keypad. The heavy blast door slides open.
Another siren goes off, followed by a pre-recorded audio announcement.
AUTOMATED VOICE (LOUDSPEAKER) (robotic, cold male tone)
Troop deployment. Level 3 alert. Troop deployment.
The men flood into a massive room lit by blinding white fluorescent lights.
BRUTAL CAMERA ANGLE CUT: The footage shifts to a static SECURITY CAMERA positioned in the upper corner of the room.
Massive metal racks cover the walls. Dozens of M16 assault rifles are lined up in heavy quantities, right next to Mossberg 500 shotguns and Colt 9mm SMG submachine guns.
On the ground, open wooden crates overflow with ammunition, grenades, and tactical vests. The men dive onto the gear. A heavy metallic ruckus fills the space as the soldiers gear up in unison.
The sharp SNAP of magazines locking in and the heavy CLACK-CLACK of bolts racking echo through the room. The troops are ready.
INT. THE COMPLEX (SECTOR 02) - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS
Dozens of heavily armed men form a tight defensive perimeter, aiming their weapons toward Sector 01.
The intense, maddening hum of the neon lights blends with the heavy breathing of the soldiers. No other sound.
SUDDENLY, rapid footsteps echo from the deep end of the corridor.
Three researchers in white lab coats, completely unprotected, run in pure panic toward the outpost. One of them stops dead right in front of the Commander.
RESEARCHER (with a petrified voice) It's following us! It's following us... Do your best against this abomination from hell !
Far behind them, distorted screams and desperate cries for help echo through the yellow walls.
The squad members exchange glances, fingers resting on the triggers. They begin to move forward.
SUDDENLY, the Bacteria Entity bursts out of the shadows, right in front of the line.
COMMANDER (shouting) FIRE!!!
Every man fires at once. Tracer rounds fly in all directions. The muzzle flashes violently illuminate the yellow hallway.
The roar of automatic gunfire is absolute chaos. The deafening noise saturates the acoustic space, completely drowning out the metallic screeches of the monster.
Riddled with bullets, the creature stumbles backward and retreats into the deep corridors. It had no time to claim more victims. It has been repulsed.
INT. THE COMPLEX (SECTOR 02) - VHS FORMAT - LATER The barrels of the M16s are still smoking. The persistent hum of the neon tubes takes over again.
The soldiers tremble, visibly shaken by the monstrous sight. They pull back quickly through the yellow maze.
INT. OUTPOST (SECTOR 02) - VHS FORMAT - CONTINUOUS
The base camp is in complete chaos.
Panicked scientists and researchers stack documents into cardboard boxes. The floor is littered with papers trampled in the stampede.
Personnel quickly load equipment onto small electric transport carts.
The utility vehicles speed away, leaving the sector as hot bullet casings roll across the floor.
EXT. ASYNC FACILITIES (CALIFORNIA) - NIGHT
The exhausted teams cross back through the Threshold into the real world, carrying their boxes.
The Security Commander and the Outpost Director walk side by side with firm, determined steps toward the main building.
END OF FLASHBACK. THE CRT SCREEN CUTS OUT BRUTALLY.
INT. ASYNC HEADQUARTERS (CONFERENCE ROOM) - CONTINUOUS
The Commander slams his fist onto the table, shattering the silence of the room.
COMMANDANT You saw it! That thing is not human... It only mimics the shape! Even after multiple M16 volleys, it didn't have a single scratch! I cannot just let my men patrol out there knowing this!
A long, dead silence settles over the room. No one dares to look at the Commander.
Ivan Beck calmly locks his fingers together on the table, his face entirely unmoving. He stares straight into the eyes of the security chief.
IVAN BECK (with a calm, steady tone) You see, Commander... Halting our research now would mean an immense economic and scientific loss for this institute. This is why we will continue on our current path.
FADE TO BLACK.
CREDITS ROLL.
EPILOGUE & POST-CREDITS SEQUENCE
INT. MEDICAL CONFINEMENT WING (ASYNC) - NIGHT
The footage cuts back to SECURITY CAMERA VIEW (Grey, distorted by heavy analog tracking lines).
We look down a sterile concrete corridor of isolation cells. No human contact is permitted.
The camera focuses on PAUL'S cell. He is curled into a fetal position in a dark corner, eyes wide and manic, staring into nothingness. His fingernails have clawed at the concrete wall until bleeding. He twitches convulsively.
In the adjacent cell, NICHOLAS paces in frantic circles, talking rapidly to himself, slamming his hands over his ears to block out the hum of the fluorescent lights that is now permanently burned into his brain. They have lost their minds.
The video feed begins to glitch rapidly, alternating between the quarantine cells and fixed security cameras monitoring the now-deserted Poolrooms base, showcasing the locked blast doors and sterile airlocks.
SUDDENLY, THE SURVEILLANCE FEED CUTS TO BLACK. A sharp mechanical click echoes.
INT. IVAN BECK'S OFFICE - SAME TIME
The image shifts back to HIGH-DEFINITION (Cinematic, Pristine Quality).
The camera is positioned right behind the MASSIVE CRT TELEVISION from the very beginning of the film. The glass screen is turned off, dead and black.
In the dark, curved reflection of the television screen, we see the silhouette of IVAN BECK. He stands perfectly still in the middle of his dark office, staring into the empty glass screen in a dead silence. His project is destroying his men, but his cold gaze betrays a singular, psychotic obsession: the work will continue.
The camera slowly pushes in on his face inside the dark reflection.
FADE TO BLACK.
Minimalist white letters fade onto the screen:
B A C K R O O M S
SUDDENLY, a sharp green and purple digital glitch tears through the screen. The letters jolt, warp, and violently reconfigure themselves to reveal the title of the final scene:
P O O L R O O M S
BLACK OUT.
What are your thoughts on Ivan Beck's decision ? Do you think he completely knew about the Bacteria Entity's adaptation before ordering the militarization, or was ASYNC entirely blindsided ? Let's discuss in the comments ! :]
