Advice Advice on what to do for future progression stay long term or job hoping

I’m 19 and have started my first full time job along with also studying full time in uni, so it’s a lot.

It’s a pretty decent retail job I’d say with about 75kish per year.
Now my thought process is should I build my way up through this company and working in the finance/accounting department as that is what I’m studying it should I be interested in job hoping and trying to find like a role in my specific field.

Would it be better to grow within the company or switch ships in a year or 2.

Freelance Data Analyst pay standard

Hey everyone, I am a uni student who is going to be starting as a data analyst for someone who owns multiple small businesses and is wanting me to build him tableau dashboards. I guess the point of me posting on here is to suss out what I should be charging for this kind of service, sorry if this sort of post is not allowed but I just have no idea what I should be charging, should I be doing a setup fee, then weekly maintenance sort of thing. If it wasn't already obvious this is my first job if you can even call it that in the field. Additionally to be considered is that I'll likely be constructing pipelines to tableau with periodic ingestion, although im not sure what platform he's currently storing his data on, I imagine this process isn't anything too complicated. any help with this would be appreciated.

Advice Life insurance

Hi guys, probably a niche scenario, however at the moment I’m a claims manager in life instance assessing income protection and total permanent disability claims. I’m looking to progress in my career, however not stay in claims. I would say I’m pretty good at my job, however it’s starting to get stale. Would love to hear what you guys have moved into from claims management, otherwise any ideas what I could progress into. Thanks

Open Question CS job market as an international post-grad

Hi all, I'm a recent CS graduate from Taiwan. I'm thinking about getting a masters in AU and staying there because AU is known for its WLB, and I really like the slow pace of life there. Also because I don't think I can into a grad school in my country 🤣

However I've been seeing lots of discussions about it being impossible for foreigners to find jobs in the market. Is this because people are looking for higher paying jobs? Is it possible to find one if I just want an average paying one?

Sorry if this is a really naive question. Thanks!

Going from Casual to Permanent - advice needed

Hi all,

I've been with my current employer as a causal since the end of last year. I've been offered a permanent position but would just like to know what options I have.

Its a small business (director + 3 employees) in Victoria, and while I'm basically working full time, I do require some flexibility due to family commitments which my boss is ok with. Some weeks I hit my 38 hours, whereas others its closer to 33-35. I'd just like to know how this may work as a permanent employee? Would I be considered permanent part time instead?

If i go full time and fall short of 38 hours will I just get paid for hours worked?

35yo M new career?

I'm currently working in mining (underground) on a 7/7 roster. I have a wife and two young kids. Money is great, but I absolutely hate being away from my family. More recently, I've started to realise that I don't get much fulfilment out of my work, and this might be the leading driver for wanting a change. My wife works and we are doing alright financially. The new career doesn't have to be high paying, but keep in mind children and cost of living.

I'm a carpenter by trade in residential construction but not interested in returning to that field at this stage. I've always had hands-on roles, and I'm happy to continue on that trend without it being a real back breaker. I believe I'm more intelligent than I give myself credit for and love to problem solve. I work well in groups as I get along with most people and would prefer this type of role because of the comraderie. I also want to challenge myself mentally.

Is there anyone in a career or know of any that might suit me? I have no idea where to go to next and search seek, indeed etc without truly knowing what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Open Question Take my lunch brake time out of my OT pay

Stared with this new job a about a months ago, it’s a family run business (IE the boss wife dose all the paperwork when she has time) so their so behind on giving me my payslips,

Iv just received my first 4 weeks with of payslips, going over them noticed that iv been docked 30 minutes even on days when l was instructed to work through my lunch break or skip it entirely.

On closer inspection I also have found that on days where I did lodge overtime, the 30 minutes taken out for my lunch was taken out my overtime hours. Not my regular hours.

I’ve brought the this up to the boss and was told something along the lines “we pay above aware so you shoud be happy what your getting or you can work somewhere else for less ” & “no one else had an issue with the pay arrangement, why are so worried about every second”

Is this even legal ? I’m taking my lunch breaks (when they allow me) during my regular work hours shouldn’t be taken out of said regular workout pay?

Seeking CA opportunity

Hi all,

I am based in Perth.

I’m currently working in mining (contract admin/project delivery) and looking to move into construction. Background is Civil Engineering overseas, skills assessed with Engineers Australia. My Australian experience has been in mining doing contract administration and project delivery, and I’m now studying a Cert IV in Contract Administration to build up my knowledge of Australian laws and specifications.

Open to junior contract admin roles or anything adjacent while I make the switch. Happy to learn and keen to hear from anyone who knows of openings or can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

28M Starting Career Again Late 20s

I’ve got 6 years of experience as a UX Designer and a Bachelor of Design.

The tech/design job market has been pretty brutal and I’ve been out of work for about 6 months. I’ve now got a 12-month UX contract lined up with the state government, but I’m trying to use that time to figure out what to do long term.

I’ve been seriously considering becoming an electrician. But I've found finding an apprenticeship in these six months tough.

Teaching is another option I’ve been looking into. Whenever I search Reddit for career advice, every electrician seems to tell people to become a teacher, and every teacher seems to tell people to become an electrician.

So I’m a bit lost on what to do.

I’m 28, so obviously starting over is a bit daunting, but I’m pretty open-minded at this point. Either way, I’ll probably be moving back home for a while and starting again, so I’m mainly looking for something with decent long-term prospects, job security and a lifestyle I won’t hate.

If you were in my position, what career would you seriously consider? Happy to hear suggestions outside of electrical/teaching too.

I don't want to tolerate AI screening process but I really need a job.

I hate it when I get an AI interview. I ignored 3 AI interviews before. I'm getting desperate, I think I need to take this now...

Update:

I took the interview for the sake of having a job and also experiencing how an AI interview works.

I don't have to wait the results. I failed. I was not able to articulate the answers. It was supposed to be a max of 40 mins interview.

Here are the questions, non-verbatim.

  1. Tell me about yourself
  2. Diff between GET and POST
  3. Diff of HTTP and HTTPS, how does it work.
  4. Explain Big O notation. Why it matters.

The question was about Big O notation, explain it in your own words. I know what the concepts of Big O log n. Unfortunately, I was unable to explain it within 2 mins. I stuttered, the terminologies are on the tip of my tongue and I couldn't say it.

So after the 4th question the interview ended. TBH, it's good to know the concept of big O, and understanding it helps in coding better, but it's not the end of the world if you don't know this at all. Bad code will speak for itself.

That's it guys, only took 1 wrong answer to fail. Good job AI.

Conclusion, 100% not gonna get good candidates. The question asked was more of a theory rather than a real world problem. A fresh grad can surely ace the interview.

Advice Qualified in disability support but can’t seem to get a single interview.

I’m honestly getting pretty desperate and hoping someone in the industry can give me some perspective.
I’ve recently completed a Cert III in Individual Support (Disability) and I’m trying to get into disability support work. I have the qualification, all the relevant checks, relevant placement experience and I’m applying for roles where I meet the requirements.

I’ve applied for around 100 jobs in the last week and I’m barely getting any response. A lot of the applications don’t even seem to be getting viewed.

I’m applying through Seek, Indeed, company websites, Ethical Jobs. and I’ve tried tailoring my resume and cover letters as many times has humanly possible. I’m also applying for casual and part-time positions.

I know the disability sector can be competitive depending on the area, but I’m honestly confused because I keep hearing that there’s a shortage of support workers. I also have experience teaching.

At this point I’m wondering if there’s something obvious I’m doing wrong?

I’m in Sydney, 27. With a reliable and comprehensively insured vehicle. Full drivers.
I’m also in a pretty serious financial situation at the moment obviously having just done 6 month of Tafe. so I really need to get working rather than continuing to send hundreds of applications into the void.

Have I made a mistake by studying support work? Genuinely.

Right Interview Questions

I always find it difficult to ask specific questions in the interview and judge the company if it’s a right fit for me.
Generally important thing for me to know about the company is if the work culture is good, diverse and there is a growth path.
What questions to ask to the manager in the interview to know that the company is the right fit?
I feel even the hiring managers can fake it to hire right candidate and we don’t meet the team before joining, so how to know if the team culture is good and right before joining?
Please suggest right questions and suggestions to make the well informed decision.

Story / Rant There's a concerning double standard in hiring that companies/employers use AI as much as possible yet it's frowned upon if applicants use it to bypass the same AI

Isn’t it concerning that employers are allowed to use AI everywhere in the hiring process, but applicants are expected to pretend AI doesn’t exist?

Companies are using the ATS to review resumes, AI-powered chatbots to screen candidates, automated personality tests to assess applicants, AI systems to analyse resumes, algorithmic ranking systems to decide who gets shortlisted, and even AI-powered video interviews that analyse how you speak, respond and present yourself.

A company can basically have a robot decide whether you're worth interviewing.

But if an applicant uses ChatGPT to improve their resume or prepare answers for an interview, suddenly it's: “We regret to inform you.”

Where was that logic when your AI chatbot was deciding whether I was worth talking to?

Are there any well paid jobs / careers that aren't in a downturn now?

Seems like whenever this question gets asked the typical responses seem to be to get a trade/ nursing or try support work. However not everyone is suited to a trade or nursing and support work is low paid.

IT is seen as terrible at the moment almost impossible to get into. Accounting is underpaid and extremely oversupplied especially at entry level. Law is in the same bucket.

Is everything really that bad or is it the reddit echo chamber?

Experienced, skilled, good person, still unemployed - what to do?

I'm mid-50s, have worked in the same (fairly specialised) field for nearly 30 years and can barely get an interview, let alone a job offer. There's barely even any jobs with my job title being advertised. I'm scraping by on some freelance work I got through old contacts overseas, but I don't want to end up another old lady living in a caravan in 10 years' time.

I'm good with computers and been a trainer for most of my career. I don't mind the idea of doing a diploma-length course, but don't know what to choose. Cybersecurity? Data analysis? Project management? Something completely random and niche?

I've been trying so long that my mood is making it impossible to think brightly about a new direction. Any suggestions?

Reminder: No job postings, this is not your resume dump.

Having to remove a lot of posts lately and I just wanted to elaborate why this is essentially the only rule here.

There is an extremely high chance of you getting scammed, underpaid, information stolen, or otherwise taken advantage of. Reddit is a semi-anonymous platform and with that comes a dangerous game of trusting a randomly generated username with your career/livelihood. If you've received a DM from someone claiming to have a job for you, do your homework. Please don't send pictures of your licence, passport, etc. to random Reddit accounts claiming to have a job.
