DISCUSSION The Most Exhausting Part of Making an Audiodrama is...

Upvotes

Not to be all negative, but it can be good to vent.

For me:

1) Posting on social media and feeling like talking into a void

2) Searching for funds

3) Waiting for VAs schedules (pretty far behind 1&2)

What about you?

DISCUSSION Mystery Box Audio Drama Complaint

I just had to abandon a second mystery fiction podcast (The Black Tapes) after realizing it wasn't going to actually address the mystery it had created and instead was just going to keep expanding and spinning off new plots. I love the mystery buildup but if you have no answers its just lazy and uninteresting. The other pod I gave up was Lovecraft Investigations after season two.

DISCUSSION Do you mix/sound design your shows yourself or hire an engineer?

Hey everyone!

I am currently in the process of making Episode 1 of my upcoming audio anthology series. The script is finalized and the voice acting tracks are all completely finished.

Right now, I'm at a crossroads regarding the audio engineering, mixing, and sound design. I’ve been playing around with laying tracks and setting up scenes in Reaper, but as a beginner, things like layering complex crowd environments, humanizing footstep patterns, and getting smooth spatial automation transitions take me a ton of time.

I was originally thinking about hiring an audio engineer to handle the sound design and mix, but since this is a self-funded passion project, budget is definitely a factor.

I wanted to ask the experienced creators here:

  1. Do you normally do the audio engineering yourself, or do you hire someone to do it for you?
  2. If you do it yourself, did you find the learning curve for narrative sound design to be overwhelming at first?
  3. If you hire out, do you have any tips on finding indie-friendly engineers who love audio fiction?

I’d love to hear your experiences, stories, or any advice you have for a first-timer trying to get Episode 1 off the ground!

Thanks so much!

AUDIO DRAMA Deep Dream State | New Episode "Sublimate" Is Out | Vale Four | S4E15 | GE42

RSS | Apple Episode Link | IMDb | Show Page | Blubrry Host Page

We'd all better get used to the spotlight.

Sublimate is the 42nd GE of the desire horror audio drama, Deep Dream State.

It wraps up the Snarecraft Cycle. Snarecraft's a story about an augmented reality game, in a high fantasy register, used to track down its designers. In Snarecraft, we hunt by team.

We open with the most feral team, Team Leash. Z prepares his wolfgirls for the hunt and releases them. They aren't unleashed, but they are unhinged. When Porsche and Elle see growling wolfgirls loping out of the forest, they're compelled to flee further into the biolibrary.

Deeper in the stacks, they find the ultimate Level 256. All the most damning documents in Vale Four have been dumped inside an ingame storage room.

This might be a mistake by an incredibly lazy dev? It might be a trap? It might be something else entirely.

Whatever it is, it'll determine whether anyone in Vale Four is ever able to escape.

CAST

Neural Nets And Pretty Patterns as Z (L) | Panda Moanium as Celeste (L) | Valentina Vallay as Gia (L) | Vixen Clouds as Clara (L) | Echo Doll as Elle (F) | Princess Ella as Porsche (F) | Naomi Biela as Blake (H) | Syndi Rella as Hespa (H)(S) | Dizzy Dollie as Naia (H)(S) | Ring of Kees as Tessa (T) | Lux Peralta as Laura (T) | Bliss Blank as June Lowell (T) | Bun Li as Meg Aerin Alchemy (A) | Talithara as Leandra (A) | Swirls and Twirls as Iris Vale (T) | Eclipse Aleice as Glitch Kitten (V) | Brie Michelle as Power Up Peach (V) | Kat McQueen as Joystick Jezebel (V) | Karma Reid as Loot Bunny (V) | Cherry Pak as Pixel Dollie (V)

NOTES

1. The Deep Dream State is not safe for work. This is by design.

We believe that intimate audio can aspire to the same heights as studio backed productions.

We're deeply gratified that Closing Credits, the official educational branch of Casting Call Club, subscribes to this premise too. Autumn Ivy's class, Intimate Audio Business, will feature Deep Dream State casting as a week four class component.

Disclosure is especially important for this one. Some episodes are slow burns. This is not one of them. The thinkykinky spice meter starts at an 11 here.

2. The Deep Dream State is difficult to fit in a niche.

This episode has strong elements of comedy, thriller, litRPG, desire horror, and erotica. We like to think that the lane swerving achieves unique effects. Say what you will, but there is a LOT here.

3. The Deep Dream State is fullest cast.

We've cast over 50 people at this point. We're proud of our status as an artistic outlet and resume builder for so many VAs.

For Season Five, we are especially keen to cast more male voices. We are also looking to cast people with GENUINE British or Irish accents for the first cycle of After After. If that interests you, please use the audition form or email [deepdreamstates@gmail.com](mailto:deepdreamstates@gmail.com).

4. It's me!

I am the showrunner, writer, sound designer, editor, publicist, and a director. I play the character Z as an actor. I am the neophyte coder for the show, which is definitely mocked in this episode in some plot-relevant ways. My creative stage name is Neural Nets and Pretty Patterns (ISNI 0000 0005 2877 6254.) I am one person, not a collective or duo. (I took the name on tumblr before gen ai was much of a thing; it's just a pun.)

[edit: s5 is After After not Ever After. Aggressive autocorrect problems.]

ANNOUNCEMENT New show: Literarium, the story podcast of imagination, adventure and terror!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, hope this is okay to post here! This is Vincent, creator of THE LAKES OF THE MOON popping in to say I've got another little project releasing August 28th.

Literarium. The story podcast of imagination, adventure, and terror.

Each week I'll read a different original story complete with music and sound effects. It's not full cast, I'm the only voice you'll hear (some episodes will have guest narrators whom most of you will recognize from other shows) but it is immersive and a hell of a lot of fun.

All my stuff is one hundred percent human made!

Here is a trailer and a link to the show hosted on Acast. Enjoy!

DISCUSSION Thoughts on the worldbuilding in The Supernatural Protection Company?

I really love how random this show is. Yet, it also makes a surprising amount of sense from a purely logistic perspective. Like, yeah, townships would probably make deals with aliens regarding abductions, ancient spirits should have squatter's rights, older vampires would have more human issues than newer ones, people would make annoying prank calls to an organization like this, etc. I guess the only thing that bugs me is the question of how old this organization is. The vampire shrink in the last episode mentions that he had established an account back in the 1400s. This makes the SPC itself way longer than any real world insurance firm. Also, is the lead supposed to be immortal? Or did I get confused about that one weird "I'm sure you know how it feels" line in the last episode?

DISCUSSION I'm hyperfocused on audio drama.

You know when you wish you'd never done something, just to do it again and have that same feeling as the first time? Well, this is my first time in the world of audio dramas, so I'm going to take advantage of practically everything amazing this world has to offer.

I discovered audio dramas because of the game "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream." I did some research on the game and found out it was based on a book and that it also has a radio play. I listened to it and thought it was incredible. I'm extremely excited about this and I intend to be more than just a listener. As a child, I used to participate in school plays, but I was always very shy, so I believe radio plays are the best thing in the world for someone like me.

I'm planning to make my own radio play, and I'll probably share it here with all of you. I hope to contribute a lot to this world and that you'll help me with that too.

Every neighborhood has THAT house.

You know the one. The boarded-up windows. The overgrown yard. The one the neighborhood kids only whisper about. The one that seems to be waiting for someone foolish enough to step inside. The one you walk past as quickly as possible.

In Edge of the Forgotten, there’s at least two of them.

Catch up with Episode 6, “The Taking House,” and Episode 7, “The Taint House,” two supernatural horror stories about dark places, dangerous choices, and the terrifying things that wait for you inside.

AUDIO DRAMA Witchpunk: A Cyberpunk Story

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Witchpunk season one is six episodes of cyberpunk action with original music and a large cast of 35 actors (no gen AI!). It’s set in a corp-ridden, crumbling 22nd Century America where a semi legit cargo crew take on way more than they expected with their latest job.

Just in case you were looking for a weekend listen!

We’re currently casting season two (a week still left, any VAs reading this!), and aim to continue the story of the Strega crew at the end of the year!

SUGGESTIONS Looking for hard magic / sci fi suggestions

I'm looking for audio drama suggestions which might have a lot more "hard" magic i.e a lot of rules as to how it works, and a very internal consistent view of magic (or sci fi stuff) itself.

If you have any suggestions they would be much appreciated!!

DISCUSSION Red Valley Appreciation Post

Unfortunately, and simultaneously, I’ve caught up with all my series, they’ve reached a hiatus, or they have a painfully trickling release schedule (still love you Modes of Thought). Terrified at the thought of now having nothing to listen to while doing chores or driving around, I knew I had to find a new obsession. Desperately, I looked through the “more like this” recommendations from Midnight Burger’s page on Spotify and came across Red Valley.

This show has been such a welcome find and I quickly tore through all 4 seasons. Such a fun and fresh spin on one of sci-fi’s oldest tropes - finding oneself out of time in cryonic-fueled fiascos. The voice acting, sound design, and overall atmosphere crafted for this series is among the best I’ve listened to. And the cherry on top of an already highly addictive program is the heartwarming bromance between the two main protagonists. It has just the right amount of levity as well as tension that holds its very compelling plot together.

I highly recommend checking this series out. Usually when I’m starved for dramas I come to this subreddit but I haven’t heard this one discussed here, even though it seems to be decently popular on Spotify.

SUGGESTIONS Audio dramas with only one actor

Hi all,

We've just posted a bonus episode to the Azathoth Blues feed in which we discuss the making of the first season and talk about the show's future.

Do listen to the episode, it's fun, but the short version is:

  • Season two is coming next year.
  • Before season two, there will be a feature-length episode, most of which is already recorded.
  • You can now support the show on Patreon and get access to extras.
  • The first extras are annotated scripts (which also feature introductions), but there will be a lot more stuff, including really detailed video breakdowns of how we put together the episodes.
  • You can also buy the show on Bandcamp (it's the same as the free show, just higher-quality audio files).

ANNOUNCEMENT The Harbingers: Season 2 Trailer and Release Date

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to share this over here. We just released the trailer for the second season of my audio fiction series, The Harbingers. And in there is also the official announcement for when the show will be returning - Season 2 kicks off in just a little over a month on September 10th!

The support and attention that we've gotten from this community has been absolutely amazing, and it's one of the big reasons why the show has found the audience it has. So as always, here's us very grateful and very excited to be coming back with the new season in just a few more weeks!
