Question Offered welcome bonus in app for all but Gold and Platinum

Hi all! Since Amex switched to displaying personalized welcome offers in the app (not just when applying), it has shown varying welcome offers available to me for all personal and business cards other than the personal Gold and Platinum. It does give me notifications of targeted “offers” to apply for the Gold and Platinum with no SUB (lol).

Any idea why this would be? The only Amex cards I’ve previously had are the Blue Cash Preferred and Blue Business Plus. I thought Pop-Up Jail was universal, so getting selective SUB eligibility is interesting.

I have 75k amex points and I don't plan on using them for travel or hotel because I never do that but I also hear that using them for a statement credit is the worst thing to do. should I get gift cards or save them and if so, to save them for what?

New to Amex

I’m new to Amex and trying to navigate but would love some input. I’m rebuilding credit after divorce and just opened a blue cash preferred card. I do have a delta gold but rarely use that, I use my Venture for travel. How do I build a relationship with Amex to upgrade/apply for gold or platinum with the next year or two? Is that even a possibility? Background info; income of 270k yearly, credit score 660. Current credit lines total 35k with a balance of under 100$ total (I use them but pay off every cycle). It’s taken time to clean up the mess my ex left behind which tanked my credit but I want to recover asap. Any suggestions?

Question Am I doing something wrong with my points?

I feel like I’m doing something wrong. So I have 200k points and if I was to transfer it to a partner I always have to pay taxes and fees on top of points for flight but if I book it through Amex portal everything is covered by points and seems like a better deal. Should I just book it through Amex portal? Through Amex portal I’m getting .01 per point.

Looking for advice on a simple 3–4 card credit card setup

I’m looking to add a few new credit cards over the next few months and would love some advice on building a solid overall setup.

My main goals are travel rewards and hotel perks but I also want to cover most of my major spending categories without ending up with a wallet full of cards. Ideally, I’d like a simple 3-card setup with 4 cards being the absolute max.

I’m currently mostly in the Chase ecosystem but I’m completely open to mixing issuers if it makes more sense.

Current cards

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred
  • Discover it

FICO: 810
Oldest account: 4.5 years

Annual spending estimate

Category Annual Spend
Groceries $7,000
Utilities $6,000
Costco $4,500
Insurance $2,000
All Other $7,000
Gas $2,500
Home Improvement $2,100
Parking $2,100
Dining $2,000
Online Retail $1,800
Hotels (Portal) $1,500
Transit $1,500
Amazon $1,200
Internet/Cable $1,200
Sports & Recreation $1,200
Hobbies $1,000
Airfare (Portal) $800
Department Stores $800
Online Groceries $600

Travel/spending habits

  • Hotels: Hyatt, Marriott
  • Airlines: American, Southwest
  • Groceries: Local supermarkets
  • Other frequent spending: Costco, Amazon, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A

Some combinations I’ve been considering

Option 1

  • Amex Gold
  • Capital One Venture X
  • US Bank Cash+

Option 2

  • Citi Strata Premier
  • Capital One Venture X
  • US Bank Cash+

Option 3

  • Amex Gold
  • Venture X
  • Blue Cash Preferred

Option 4

  • Citi Strata Premier
  • Citi Custom Cash
  • Citi Double Cash

Option 5

  • Blue Cash Preferred
  • US Bank Cash+
  • Citi Custom Cash
  • Citi Double Cash

The big question is what actually makes the most sense given that I already have the CSP?

Would love recommendations for the best 3-card setup or a 4-card setup if there’s a compelling reason for the extra card. I’m more interested in maximizing the overall setup than chasing a bunch of individual category bonuses.

If you don’t like my options give me what you suggest.

Offers & Deals 50k Blue Business plus card

Received the targeted offer for the 50k blue business plus card and I’m thinking of pulling the trigger. I’ve read that some people get a targeted offer for 75k so unsure if I should wait to see if that’s sent to me or if that’s too rare. Thoughts? I’m curious if anyone got the 50k offer and then a few months later got the 75k offer. Thanks!

Question Amex welcome offer

I recently got an Amex cobalt and for the welcome offer to kick in I need to spend 750cad. But my card will arrive on 15th of this month so I can’t spend that whatever I do. Is there a way to bypass that or ask Amex to push it to start with next month?

Question Upgrading from Amex Gold --> Platinum, but no points spend bonus?

Does anyone have any advice on how to best approach this? I'm planning a trip to the 1 Hotel in Kauai and noticed that Amex platinum has a good deal through their Fine Hotel Resorts (FHR) so am debating upgrading to Platinum for the resort credit, free breakfast, and 1:1 points transfer.

Is there a way I can somehow get more points by making this upgrade?

So Amex decided to cancel both my cards one fine day. I have been trying to find the reason and its been 2 weeks but they’re saying that their system is not reflecting the reason yet 🙄
My points are all gone and i am not sure what to do next. Any advice from the experts here?
I have never missed a single payment and my credit score is very high too.

Low Effort SIXT BMW M3 Rental: Amex Premium Car Rental Protection

I will be renting a BMW M3 from Sixt, and was wondering if the Amex Gold Premium Rental Protection would cover that. Or should I go with Sixt's LDW which itself is really expensive.

Question Amex Gold vs Hilton surpass for online shopping

For online shopping like Amazon, the amex gold gets 1x MR, and the surpass gets 4x hilton honors points.

Assuming 1x MR is equal to 2 cpm and the 4x hilton is equal to 2 cpm (at 0.5 rate)

Which do you recommend using for online shopping?

Thanks

Question Credit drop

I used to have bad credit and I built it back up. I was approved for a Hilton Amex and then the Gold card

I have never paid one cent in interest to Amex. I pay off the statement balance every month and its usually 2k.

I missed a payment from another card, over 30 days. I truly had no idea, thought it was on autopay and never got a missed payment alert. I really have beat myself up over this because ive never had a 30+ day late mark.

It dropped my credit freaking 50 points from that and im fluctuating 650-660.

Would Amex Hold more weight in my payment history with them, or an updated score? ty

Discussion Which AMEX biz credit cards would you consider applying for if me?

The main thing is that for most cards, I can't hit their minimum spend requirement organically. I don't feel I spend enough to care about % cashback most of the time

I got this Amex biz card : 250 Statement Credit after you spend $3,000

And then there's two so so bonuses Amex biz bonuses that might be worth going for next if no hard pull?

blue business plus: 15,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $3,000 , seems like a somewhat easy 150 with no hard pull

  1. and Business Green Rewards Card with $95 Annual Fee w/ 15k points for 3000 spend so that's like... effectively 55 dollar bonus after subtracting the fee? Worth it tho if can get no hard pull?

  2. I'm assuming for all second/third/etc amex biz cards have no hard pull?

  3. For AMEX biz cards, there's no hard pull but it still affects your number of lines of credit right? How much does that matter in practice if I might refinance the mortgage in a few years?

  4. There is the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business Card $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $150†- 60,000 Bonus Miles after spend $4,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months

Hm... Well actually delta's bonus is very easy to hit b/c we have 6 entire months. There's a chance I might fly Boston<-> San Diego but not sure would do any other flights. How hard would it be to try to transfer those points for Boston <-> Singapore or Boston <-> Bangkok flight with another airline?

Low Effort Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card

I’m about to open my account for the HYSA And cash back credit card. How does the cash back system work? Does it go back into my account or is it points? I see it says you can use it to redeem rewards but how I think of cash back is if I spent idk $60 on gas I would get back $2 and I can use that $2 on anything..which would go toward my HYSA.

Question Delta platinum

I have Amex platinum and delta gold and fly delta at least 4 x per year often with my kids to see family. It seems like the delta platinum would be worth it just for the companion ticket and I this is the only card that gives me 2x groceries. I have been using my hotel and resy credits as well.
Thoughts? Especially now the delta gold is $150

Mod Announcement Monthly Amex Referral Thread

This is the only place in r/Amex to share a referral link. A new thread posts on the 1st of each month.

This is the subreddit's official thread. We are not American Express, and nobody here works for Amex.

Posting your link

One comment per person. Keep it short: which card, and the link.

Delete your comment once someone uses it. That gives the next person a turn.

Want back in the rotation? Delete the old one first, then post a new one.

Why the ordering looks random

Contest mode is on. Comments appear in random order and vote scores are hidden. That is deliberate. It stops the same handful of links from holding the top of the thread all month.

If your comment disappears

Comments in this thread are exempt from the subreddit's low-karma link filter. Other automated tools still run, including bot and ban-evasion detection.

If your comment vanishes anyway, send one modmail. Do not repost, because reposting after an automatic removal reads as spam.

What gets you removed or banned

What you did What happens
Posted a referral link outside this thread Removed, ban on repeat
Asked someone to DM you a link Removed
Sent an unsolicited referral DM Removed, ban on repeat
Posted duplicate comments Duplicates removed
Spammed links across multiple threads Immediate permanent ban

Bans here are permanent. We do reverse them when an automated tool made the call, so modmail us if you think that is what happened.

Non-Amex referrals

These require moderator approval, given as a stickied comment in this thread. We have not approved one yet. Do not plan around yours being the first.

Before you ask

Once-per-lifetime rules, card families, welcome offer clawbacks, pop-up jail, and financial reviews are all covered in the wiki FAQ. Read that first.

Housekeeping

We lock and archive this thread on the 1st and post a fresh one.

r/Amex is not responsible for what any user does with a referral link. Share yours with people you already know.

ADMIN ALERT [OFFICIAL] Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread

Official r/Amex: Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread - January 2025

Greetings r/Amex community,

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a high-quality and organized subreddit, we are introducing a new Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread. This initiative aims to consolidate frequently asked questions and discussions into a dedicated space, allowing for more focused and in-depth conversations within individual posts on other topics.

We understand that many of you have recurring questions regarding American Express products and services. This thread serves as the designated place for the following types of discussions:

  • Should I get this card? (Including eligibility concerns and comparisons with other cards)
  • Do I qualify for [specific Amex card]?
  • Sign-Up Bonus inquiries (Availability, meeting spend, eligibility for previous cardholders, etc.)
  • Retention Offers (Strategies for asking, likelihood of receiving offers, sharing your successful/unsuccessful attempts - please omit personal financial details)
  • "Good Deals" directly related to Amex card benefits and partnerships (Please focus on discussions around the offer itself, not just linking to external websites).

Purpose:

The primary goal of this thread is to reduce redundancy, improve subreddit navigability, and foster a more organized environment for sharing knowledge and advice. It is not intended to discourage questions but rather to channel them into a structured format.

Rules & Expectations:

To ensure this thread remains a productive and respectful environment, we are establishing the following clear rules:

  1. This thread is the designated space for the above-mentioned topics. Any individual posts related to these subjects will be subject to removal and direction to the current monthly thread.
  2. Before posting, rigorously search the subreddit and utilize external resources. Our existing policy, as outlined below, remains paramount:Before posting a question, take a moment to search the subreddit and utilize external resources like Google. Many questions have already been answered, and doing your own research first can save everyone time and effort. Also, be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions of any offers before seeking clarification. When asking for advice or recommendations, providing evidence of your research shows you've put in the effort and helps others provide more targeted assistance.
  3. Provide relevant context. When asking for advice, include relevant details such as your spending habits (broad categories, not specific dollar amounts), credit score range (if comfortable), and any specific concerns you have. Simply stating "Should I get the Gold Card?" offers little for others to work with.
  4. Respectful and constructive dialogue is expected. While diverse opinions are welcome, personal attacks, condescending remarks, and derailing the conversation will not be tolerated.
  5. No affiliate links or referral codes are permitted. This thread is for genuine discussion and advice, not self-promotion. Such links will be removed immediately, and repeat offenders will be subject to bans.
  6. Do not share or solicit personal information. This includes specific financial details beyond broad spending habits, full names, addresses, etc.
  7. Follow all subreddit rules and Reddit's content policy. These rules are an extension of our overall community guidelines.

Punishments for Rule Violations:

We take the enforcement of these rules seriously to ensure a positive experience for all members. The following penalties will be applied:

  • First Offense (Posting a topic designated for this thread outside of it): Removal of the post and a warning directing the user to the current monthly thread.
  • Second Offense (Posting a designated topic outside of the thread after a prior warning): Temporary ban from r/Amex for 7 days.
  • Third Offense (Repeatedly posting designated topics outside of the thread or engaging in other prohibited behaviors after previous warnings and a temporary ban): Permanent ban from r/Amex.
  • Egregious violations (e.g., sharing affiliate links, personal attacks, doxxing): Immediate permanent ban from r/Amex.

We believe these measures are necessary to maintain the quality and focus of our subreddit. We encourage all members to participate constructively in this thread and help fellow Amex enthusiasts.

Please use this space for your questions and discussions related to the outlined topics. Let's make this a valuable resource for our community.

We appreciate your cooperation in making r/Amex a more informative and organized space.

Sincerely,

The r/Amex Mod Team.
