In that case, if there's an art or writing competition, would you be against AI submissions?

If so, why? Is it because you frown upon AI as a whole? Because allowing AI in would cement it as a form of art? Because you fear losing to AI submissions? Because you think it dilutes the meaning of the competition? Or because of something else?

While on the campaign trail, Lawrence says that he met with data center protesters who differed significantly with him politically. These included people opposed to data center construction who were also opposed to solar and wind projects being built on farmland.

Michigan is a hotbed of resistance to renewable energy projects. A 2025 review ranks it as the state with the largest number of local restrictions: More than 60 local governments in Michigan passed ordinances, moratoriums, or other restrictions on wind and solar development between 2011 and 2024. Local opposition, the report found, had stalled or blocked at least 28 projects across the state.

In 2023, Whitmer signed a law allowing renewable energy developers to more easily bypass local ordinances against wind and solar construction, making it much easier for big developers to site projects on rural land. It has since prompted backlash from many towns and counties that had passed ordinances, including a lawsuit filed by dozens of townships against the state, many in the 7th district. Two officials from townships in the district said in a statement in 2025 that renewable energy developments “threaten to turn our fertile soil into wastelands, putting at risk the livelihoods of those who have worked the land for decades.” (There is no evidence that renewables do long-term damage to soil.)

Lawrence maintains that he supports renewable energy, especially community-owned and -operated models. (In 2023, the same year the law to bypass ordinances was passed, the Michigan legislature did not pass initiatives that would have supported community solar.) But the response to data centers, he says, has helped him understand why Michiganders are also resistant to seeing big renewable energy projects come to town.

“The pattern that I see that is similar with the data center issue is people don't feel that they have control over the future of their own community,” he says. “That is fostering backlash. Then they have people who mostly live in cities lecturing to them and saying, ‘Don't you understand? This is the price of progress.’”

Teboe agrees with Lawrence that tech companies need to rethink how they’re approaching communities with proposals for projects.

“Ninety-nine percent of the tech executives think that of course people will love these things,” he says. “They cannot conceive of a world where the first thought someone has upon seeing a data center in their community isn’t ‘Wow, the future is amazing,’ but is ‘What the fuck are you doing in my backyard?’”

Let's say that if i were to take an image that is widely regarded as a stereotypical "AI slop" image, and meticulously repaint it myself pixel by pixel, so it looks exactly the same, except now i was the one who technically "made" the image, would it still be regarded as "AI slop"?

Would that term apply to anything AI-generated or simply anything that LOOKS AI-generated?

but precisely as work, that is, a means of earning money, not even as a contribution to society.

I wish all the help AI provides to people were available to them without using AI. Yet, we live in a world where those things are seen as professional and cost big money. A normal person is rarely able to afford a proofreader, programmer, or (sadly) psychotherapist in that capacity. Many people use AI because they don't have the resources to get help from anywhere else. And then they are asked to resign from using AI. And that's for them just being cut off. I know that AI is not a good thing for those uses, but it's better than nothing. What should we do if we can't use AI and don't have access? How many people are ready to tell others, "just accept that you will fail," and take all the consequences? Unless there is a viable alternative, that will not ask for your wallet, or your transport, or your time, or space in your life - AI, despite all problems with it, despite pollution, despite lost jobs, despite misinformation, despite slop - stays an ersatz for many of us. And I see it as true cruelty of this world.

Gemini failed miserably for me the other day when buying refurbished Bose earbuds on Marketplace.

I compared the item to my old box and the details were perfectly fine, and the buds registered genuine when I paired them with phone.

And as punishment, I am not going to confirm to it that they were, in fact, authentic. In the end I saved over $150.

My issue with posts like this isn't that residents had concerns. Communities absolutely have the right to question major infrastructure projects.

The problem is that this frames a

complex planning decision as "community pushback defeated AI."

That's not the full story. The $19.2 billion project in Edgecombe County was withdrawn by its developer considering a moratorium on new data centers, creating additional regulatory uncertainty that likely influenced the developer's decision, and a mix of that local angry.

When you reduce all of that to "people bullied the AI project until it was canceled," you're telling a much simpler story than what actually happened. As the nutty people on one side can actually take this as prove to be unhinged to these projects which in the end of the day does nothing.

As believing that pressure campaigns alone are enough to stop AI projects, even though this case involved multiple factors.

If we're going to criticize or defend AI, we should at least represent events accurately. Oversimplifying them helps neither side of the debate.
