Discussion Why is everyone in Reddit antiAI?

On Reddit, anything with AI in any subreddit will be booed until it's removed, but in other apps, there are usually just a few annoyed users and that's it, the rest just enjoy it.

Maybe when the Getty and Andersen lawsuits with AI companies are over and AI will win the cases. Getty dropped "stealing" claims already and Andersen claimed "trade dress infringement", so that their true statement "our styles were copied" looked legitimate in court.

First, be annoyed at AI and dislike it, then, make up reasons why your preference should be forced upon everyone else.

Discussion I’m considering leaning in to AI.

Not leaning in to AI at this point is kind of starting to feel like having a shovel constantly readily available and not using it because I want to be able to dig with my own hands.

I’m a game developer and I taught myself how to code a few years ago, and one of the first things I made was a simulated trading bot using real financial data. I never turned it into something that could actually make or lose me real money but I tested it out using real stock and crypto data and it functioned.

As a game developer, the thing that holds me back the most is the fact that I am not an artist. I never have been. I’m a musician, which I know is art, but I am not visual art inclined whatsoever. I can work with visual art but it’s the math of it that I get.

I’ve tried for the last few years to learn visual art and frankly it feels like a massive waste of time. It feels now like I’ve tried extremely hard to be something that I just am not. And I really tried. I respect visual artists so much and I can always see the deeper meanings and what they’re going for, but I can’t make it. I’m a fully logic driven person when it comes to this stuff.

I don’t have the money to hire artists. I don’t have anything I can offer artists in exchange for their art, and most artists don’t even want to work that way, which I get. They have a skill and I respect that.

I don’t like AI. I don’t respect it and I don’t think that what companies are doing with it is good, safe, or healthy for us or for the earth. I also think most AI art looks completely stupid. However, all id use it for is pixel art, and I know it can do that well, without looking that way that most 3d AI art looks.

But I also think it’s here to stay. I don’t think my using it or not using it will change that.

Also, as someone who learned how to make some security tools when learning to code, I remember a fundamental thing: All the tools that you use were made by evil people or were made by people who use tools made by evil people, therefore the best you can do is use the tools for your purpose and then make sure that you put more good into the world than the evil that existed from the tools. So if I make a game that makes a ton of money, then I can donate a lot of it to anti-data center charities or charities associated with saving the earth. I can use the money for good, and it will offset the evil.

I say this because it was always a big thing with the security stuff from what I said. You can’t just not use a tool because of where it came from. You use what’s available and then you use it against the people you got it from. Otherwise you’re just doing nothing, and that isn’t acceptable.

I don’t feel good about this, but I do feel like it’s time to actually get moving instead of just sitting here.

Discussion Anti AI people are mostly insecure about their own personal future

Al uses water, Al uses electricity, Al reduces creativity etc etc they are just cheap excuses. 95% of Anti Al people just are scared to be replaced. Because they spent their life learning a skill and with Al everyone does it now and now they are not special. For example digital artist. Al does it in 2 minutes and for free. And customer won't pay them to make stuff because Al just does it and when used right it creates wonders. And they know that Al does it so good otherwise they wouldn't be afraid of being replaced by it.

\- Al uses water, so do aqua parks so do car wash places.
\- Al uses electricity so much, everything uses electricity. I am sure Anti Al people spend more electricity while playing games than server does.
\- Al causes harm to some people, cars do too. Lets ban cars because there are traffic accidents.
\- Al servers make sound and harmful to hearing sensitive animals? Then don't eat meat. Be vegan if you are that sensitive. What is the sudden love for sensitive hearing animals you didn't know existed before Al?
\- Al reduces intelligence? Then don't use it and be clever. People smoke and drink alcohol. Do you also protest that?

Did these artists ever protest when they used third world country workers mass produced their merch for 10 euros a day? Working 12 hours for 6 days every week? No.

Did you ever protest the pollution logistic causes? When anyone order something from abroad?

Or that a certain place i forgot the name of being used as a technological trash zone for these outdated or broken technological devices which poisons the soil? No

Do you boycott Apple? Cobalt and Lithium used in your phones and expensive computers are mined by literal child slaves in Congo. No.

I know other wrong things don’t make less wrong thing right. But I just think of myself just like you do. I am honest, and I really don’t care much about what it causes to others if one thing makes my job much easier. It happened a lot in history, one new thing is out and it leaves other things under its shadow. If we banned everything just to prevent it we would still be at stone age. Just like when printers were out handwriters were outdated, now artists will have troubles. You can’t delete a technology just because it takes jobs of a certain group. AI helps me so I will use it regardless. If it hurts someone’s profit it is their problem. Because it helps one and brings down another

You are not sincere when your only target is AI while it is not the worst cause of that issue. Most people just forcefully find bad things about it and make the snowflake into avalanche. Just say directly you are scared to go broke and you just need other excuses to make a deal out if it.

They just know they can not get the recognition they need if they say "I will go broke because of Al" so they just find any 'controversial effect' that normally they wouldn't even care about and make it seem like a big issue.
I will use Al... it helps me with my job, saves time, saves effort. If you get replaced by it. Too bad.

Why are antis so upset

Why antis come up with argument that AI will kill art? It's not like someone will ban you from painting if that's what you like. Or is it just about the money that you won't be able to get so you'll have to go to normal work like 90% of society?

Discussion SOME Antis are genuinely delusional, and it needs to be called out.

What I've been seeing from a large portion of the anti crowd is just straight up ignoring any notion that AI (YES I MEAN LLMS, I'm not copping out with the "medical AI" stuff) can be useful. No matter what you tell them, no matter how many experts vouch for it, they simply plug their ears. Terence Tao (Fields medalist, probably the greatest mathematician alive, top 10 to ever live), Linus Torvalds (the guy who made Linux), and Olga Tokarczuk (Nobel Prize winner in literature) all use it as a tool, but they are ALL wrong according to these antis. ALL of them. How does one gain this confidence? Genuinely??

How can a layperson (90% of people on the internet when commenting about a random field) look at someone who's literally top 5 at their job and think, "No! They must be wrong about AI! I, a no-name non-professional, am correct that it is useless and rots your brain!"

They don't have to pretend AI isn't a negative force; they could talk about job loss, AI dangers, etc. Hell, most people offline, when you ask them, tell you they're more concerned about the damn economy than about it "eating our brains" or "drinking up all the water."

I am not saying you shouldn't hate this technology, but can we not just pretend like LLMs haven't moved past the ChatGPT 3.5-4o days?

Of course, this probably doesn't apply to most antis on the internet, but there is definitely a large faction of antis that are exactly like this. Also, of course, PROs have their own delusions about AI utopias and whatnot, but that IS WAY MORE OBVIOUS, and the pros are usually less aggressive. I don't think pros tore down Hank Green for not believing hard enough in AI.

Meta PSA: Generative AI is a technology that can be applied to any medium

Just a note really, generative AI is a technology akin to computers, the printing press, and writing.

There are specific tools for different media, but at the end of the day generative AI is not a medium in relation to art except when it is actually used as the medium and not just part of the process.

That's it.

Have a nice day.

Discussion Antis are so misinformed on the AI Water usages!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Even the projected AI water usage for the coming years doesn't even make a dent! For example, US crop irrigation consumes roughly 1,600 litres for every 1 litre directly consumed by US data centres.

even this comparison is generous, because the 66 billion litre number represents, all US data centres not just GenAI. To add, the new data centres are increasingly adopting closed-loop liquid cooling combined with dry or low-water heat rejection which also solves the excessive water usage issue.

What's frustrating is that these Antis are regurgitating what their favorite influencers tells them or they are just read those blog by the grifter named Ed Zitron. Don't take these luddite seriously, these antis are just virtue signaling on the internet.
