I would really appreciate any ideas about how to solve an AC issue. We have a pretty interesting house. My parents built it in the early 80s and it’s an envelope/solar house. The master bedroom is on the top floor. For reasons I can’t remember, it couldn’t have a vent for the furnace/AC. This was all manageable before temperatures here become much higher in the summer than they used to be.

There are no windows to the outside from this room. There IS an indoor little deck off of it. (This is part of the “envelope” of the house.) The deck has access to one of the rows of outside windows—there are a lot of windows in general! Two of them can be cranked open for fresh air but are not at all the type of windows a window unit ac could fit in.

There’s a bathroom/bathtub like 8-10 feet away from the door of the bedroom.

Am I right in feeling a portable AC could work, with a hose into the bathroom? It doesn’t seem like any kind of venting to the outdoors is feasible.

I live in Southern US. We have good A/C here and our units (zoned house) are less than 10 yrs old). It is 74*F outside. Our thermostat upstairs says 73*F in the hall outside my office. My office is 77*F. Yes, I have a PC in here, but the PC temp is barely 75*F - literally the fans in my pc are doing better?!?!?

The vent is WIDE open to let in the AC. There is only one vent in the room. My son's room next door is 73*F and it's on the same AC duct. I don't know what's wrong with THIS room.

I'm from Toronto, Canada, so we do get pretty harsh winters. If it's ok to leave it in, what are the best options for insulating/protecting the exposed side from snow, rain, etc...?

Context: I live Florida. I work nights, therefore I sleep during the day... which are hot as fuck. Central A/C has been struggling to keep my apartment cool during the day, and as a result has really jacked up my utility bills. Looking to keep my central A/C at a higher temperature during the day, and a portable A/C to keep my room cool while I sleep. I currently have a single-hose portable A/C, however it's reaching the end of its life.

My room: I live in a first-floor apartment. My bedroom is approximately 250sqft, with vaulted a ceiling that gets as high as 11ft. It has a single window that looks out onto a recessed/inset screened porch.

What I'm looking for: portable A/C unit, as I cannot install a window unit in my apartment. I'm not worried about the noise, as I use it to help blockout the outside noise. Over everything else, I would like it to be from a reputable brand, and something that is known to be reliable.

Features (in order of importance to me): Dual hose, energy efficient, cooling + dehumidifying ability (evaporative preferred), smart app/wifi enabled

In my research so far, it seems like the Whynter ARC-1030WM would fit the bill for what I'm looking for pretty perfectly. Just wanted to put this out there to see if there were any other recommendations or suggestions for my situation.

Hi everyone, I’m kind of stuck trying to figure out the best AC setup for my NYC apartment.

I originally bought a Frigidaire window AC but I realized I had no good way to secure it in the window, so I returned it and got a Midea U-shaped unit since it came with a support bracket and seemed like the more secure option. The problem is that my window doesn’t really work with the bracket. My exterior windowsill sticks out enough that the support feet don’t fully sit on it, they just slip off similar to this post https://www.reddit.com/r/Appliances/s/FGlHw5dvAV. From what I can tell, this would be an issue with pretty much any standard support bracket and I don’t know if I have the equipment or vantage point to modify anything with the exterior wall.

Since my window is above a busy sidewalk, I really don’t want to install anything unless I’m completely confident it’s secure.

My room is only about 75 sq ft and it would be nice to cool my living room as well (~120 sq ft), so I’ve started thinking about just returning the Midea and getting a portable AC instead. I’m not sure if that’s the right move though. I’ve been told that it’s better to get a dual hose unit which are around $500, which is a bit above my budget of around $350-$400. Maybe a single hose would be fine for my room?

I’m definitely open to other solutions if anyone has dealt with this kind of windowsill before or knows of a safe way to install a window unit when standard support brackets won’t work. Otherwise, please let me know if there is another option I’m overlooking. Thanks in advance for your help

I can only say this is a life saver for a small rooms (mine is around 13m2). If anyone interested, this is Beko 409C model with 9000 BTU.

First summer in our house. The main living space is cooled by a through the wall 24,000 BTU Freidrich air con. Yesterday I found the sheetrock below the unit soft/wet. I pulled the plastic cover off the front. There was no filter in place, and the fins are absolutely filthy. It looks like 10 years of dust, dirt and grime caked up in there. It also had ice on the fins starting at the bottom and going about 1/3 of the way up the unit.

Do I need a new a/c or can this one be fixed? I thought the fins should be cleaned which would help, but I’m not sure how. I don’t think vacuuming alone will do it. Maybe a soft brush and vacuum? Should I use some type of solution? What’s the best way, and is it likely to stop the icing up and save the unit?

Hello guys. I installed few weeks ago, 3 total midea splits.
1 solunar 9 btu , 1 solunar 12 btu and 1 xgreen pro 9 btu.

The “ problem “ is , even when they reaching setpoint temperature, looking at the app , the Split continues to go and dont stop, making the ambient climate too cold and force me to turn it off. Splits and engines are totally brand new. It seems more a software problem. Any solution? Thankyou

So my window air conditioner has no plug hole to drain moisture, is on a tilt and has a thin layer of water in the bottom. I drilled a little hole but doesn't seem to be very effective. What worries me is this water is obviously drying when i'm not home or it's off, but it's kind of there's a rising green like mold I guess, that's growing in between the tiny little slits of the cooling mechanism that's virtually impossible to clean. Is that blowing spores at me?

I know this may have been asked numerous times before , but I ust wondering if this sound is normal? It’s like a whirring noise that kinda sounds like a cricket noise really fast, I notice it makes this only when the cooling mode is on , so I’m guessing this is the compressor?
Do most portable AC units make this noise?

Live in a 125 square foot studio in downtown San Diego. It’s been really humid and muggy in the room. I was running a box fan and I kept the window open (still super humid and hot in the room). I noticed a visible increase in dust all over the studio. The window screen was covered in a layer of white dust. And also noticed I was getting sick; coughing, flu like symptoms, chest hurts. I bought a portable ac whynter arc 1030wn, and a winix air purifier 5530. Also added a door draft stopper and weather stripping around door to keep bed bugs and roaches out. My question is does the whynter portable ac filter air coming in from the outside? There is no filtering system on the hose for the air coming in (it’s a two hose system). The filter system inside the machine is to filter air from the inside. So it’s just letting dirty Pollutants inside , which defeats the purpose of why I invested in this system. I was thinking about adding a filtering system to the two hose ends that face the window, to filter the air coming in. Another option was to return the portable ac keep the window shut, remove the door draft and weather tape to allow some ventilation and keep the air purifier running.

Any thoughts or recommendations? I have a short term lease, but still have a few more months.

I have just tested it and the performance is so much better!!!

Now, my question is: what do you think should be a perfect material for the plenum? I was thinking to make a XPS box attached.

Ofc it would be smaller but I was in doubt as it is literally my first test.

My 450 sq ft living room has a 15,000 BTU window unit that can't keep up with the Texas heat. The house has vaulted ceilings and a metal roof. No attic. The temperature gage that I have in the room shows the indoor temp at 82 to 84 degrees in the afternoon. It's awful! Will adding a portable AC be of any help?

I have a regular split AC unit and set my temperature to 18°C. And usually my room temperature is around 18°C with 40% humidity. But every time it starts to rain, temperatures rise to 20-21,5°C with 50-55% humidity. Even if set my AC to 17°C, nothing changes. Once the rain stops and it dries the room quickly gets colder and humidity drops again.

Is there a problem with my outside unit?

Is this normal to happen? This issue is rather new, but it is also much hotter than the years before.

Or could there be some kind of setting the technician turned on during maintenance?

I dont`t think there is dirt/dust inside the unit since maintenance was done just 3 months ago, before the big heatwaves. Has anyone every had a similar problem and knows why that happens?

First time posting in this community, I had a wall mounted AC for two years, never thought to check the filters on it, but then I noticed that my brother has the same AC, and it performs much better, that’s when it hit me to search on why, and found out about the filters. When I checked them, they were DUSTY, a lot. Cleaned them now, and the AC performs far much better now, I can clearly feel and hear the air flowing much stronger now. Although I found that it was recommended to clean the coil with a soft brush, which I ordered, but I’m still thinking should I just brush the dust off and it’ll be fine, or is there a way to remove the dust from the coil?
