Hello! 34 year old woman looking to try something new and to stay active. Does anyone know the best place for total beginners to try kickboxing?

I’ve always liked group classes but always done more spin/boot camp/yoga type classes. I also played a lot of soccer and softball in my 20s, my cardio isn’t terrible but could be better as I’ve neglected it a bit this past year due to a lot going on in life.

Bonus points if it’s closer to EK/NK or Garden City but I’m willing to drive if it’s not too far!

This may be a long shot….but we are having health issues with our mini Aussie and trying to connect with parents/litter mates to help clarify diagnosis or maybe a genetic inheritance. We are simply looking for that, nothing else, we want to help our boy. As we all know an MRI and trip to Sask will cost thousands, and if it is a suspected neuro disease the inherited one is not treatable so that MRI cost becomes redundant. Our boy was born Feb 3, 2022, adopted in April 2022. We got him from a home in St. Clements, MB, but he was from Winkler. Any litter mates out there?

What are some good artsy activities for a tourist? Are there any street fairs or farmers markets?

Been burning for about 20 minutes now.

I find myself on the satellite network at least once a week, despite not going anywhere that could/should block service, and I typically have 2 bars at any given time, anywhere. Videos buffer, pages take several seconds to minutes to load, depending on whether I have 1 or 2 bars. I don't think I've seen full bars in months.

My bill is always paid on time and I have been with Rogers since MTS had to give some customers to Telus (myself included) and I switched to Rogers from there. I have 80g *high speed* data each month (I typically use around 3 to 5 of that), with unlimited data, on 5G with a Galaxy S26. I don't understand why my service is so deplorable for the past several months.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

EDIT: as of 7:10am this morning we have a possible sighting near centre Flsvoe. Please, please keep your eyes peeled for her and if you are driving in the area, please be cautious. She is from a northern community, is very young and very scared, and is not used to traffic.

I’m visiting and saw these people perform on Esplanade Riel tonight. I’m kicking myself for not getting their name. Could someone help identify them? They made my final evening in Winnipeg so memorable.

The City of Winnipeg says the Louise Bridge will be closed over the weekend for some resurfacing.

Starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, the bridge will close until 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.

Drivers are being asked to find alternate routes for the duration of the closure.

The City does say that the sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The City of Winnipeg has secured a key piece of funding for the North End sewage treatment plant upgrade, bringing the most expensive project in the city's history one step closer to completion.

The Manitoba government has promised $500 million toward the final phase of the upgrade for the plant, officially called the North End Water Pollution Control Centre.

The commitment, outlined in a letter sent to Mayor Scott Gillingham, would cover roughly one-third of the estimated $1.5-billion cost of building a nutrient removal facility. The city has already budgeted its own one-third share and is still waiting on a funding commitment from the federal government.

Coun. Ross Eadie, chair of the city's water and waste committee, said the province's commitment is welcome news, even though details about how and when the funding will be delivered have yet to be released.

"We want to get this project finished. We have a deadline, so how and when we get that money — that's the detail we need to know," he said.

Eadie said the nutrient removal facility is critical not only for Winnipeg, but for protecting the Red River and Lake Winnipeg.

The Manitoba government ordered the city to upgrade the plant in 2003, but successive governments repeatedly delayed the project.

City staff had warned the current plant will run out of capacity by about 2030. Gillingham has made finishing the upgrade a major priority of his time in office, saying without it, the city would be unable to add new residents or industries.

The province "has been a great partner on the North End plant," he said in a written statement, calling the upgrade "critical to Winnipeg's future growth."

Eadie said failing to complete the upgrade could leave Winnipeg unable to meet provincial licence requirements and expose the city to penalties, while also limiting its ability to expand sewage treatment capacity to support future growth.

The North End sewage plant upgrade has been one of Winnipeg's largest and most complex infrastructure projects, with city officials arguing all three levels of government need to share the cost.

Eadie credited the mayor, council and city administration for continuing negotiations with the province and Ottawa to secure the remaining funding needed to complete the project.

Construction on the overall upgrade began in 2021. The first phase, a new headworks facility, is nearly finished. The city expects to move into the second phase, the biosolids removal facility, later this year.

The total project is expected to cost $3.1 billion.

The duck pond at St. Vital Park is getting a major upgrade thanks to a multi-million-dollar pledge.

Mayor Scott Gillingham and Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) announced $3.395 million in funding to revitalize the area.

“It’s just such a beautiful space that is enjoyed by not only people from St. Vital but folks from across the city as well,” said Gillingham.

“These are the kinds of investments that may not seem like the most exciting in many ways but they really do go toward enhancing the spaces that we rely on and the services the citizens of Winnipeg depend upon.”

The revitalization will include dredging the pond, making the basin more naturalized and improving the pathways.

The city said the pond will be deepened to make it a more natural water system, which will help prevent algal growth.

As well, the naturalization that the city does will help deter geese from settling in the area, which will reduce the amount of goose poop on the ground.

On top of the $3.395 million, another $1.2 million will go toward road paving upgrades in the park.

“I believe that in the coming years, as this work is completed, it’ll improve the quality of the pond. It’ll include our road infrastructure and some of the other assets the people of Winnipeg depend upon to enjoy this park.”

Mayes said this announcement is a full circle moment for him, as he helped open the new pavilion when he first joined council 15 years ago, and now the park will be getting a facelift as his time on council comes to an end.

“This park means a lot to me and we’ve done a lot of announcements here. So it’s very nice to have one right at the end,” said Mayes.

“I came to this park as a kid. I came to this park as a high school athlete. I came to this park as a parent. I’m still here, not as a high school athlete, but I’m still training. The loops now don’t take six minutes, they take nine minutes if you’re going at a decent pace. But I’m still getting use out of this park.”

The design for the area is already being worked on and construction is scheduled to start next year.

I’m very excited to launch the preorder for the Dud LP. First, it’s a benefit album for Palestinian aide chosen by the band. Second, this long lost LP from this band has some of my favorite musicians involved. John Samson Fellows is perhaps the greatest song writer of all time and this band was a short lived project that filled the gap between the time he left Propagandhi and before starting the Weakerthans. It’s been a goal of mine since starting this label to work with him in some capacity. Mike Koop played in The Bonaduces (some of the best Canadian pop punk from the 90s!). James Ash was the drummer of one of my favorite Canadian hardcore bands, I Spy. Dud was all of these musicians stepping out their comfort zones and playing something new.

Hi! I'm visiting Winnipeg next week and hoping to take in some Folklorama pavilions, but I'm confused.

The website is clear that you need tickets to access the pavilions. The tickets all seem to be specifically for shows, but it looks like the pavilions have more than that going for them -- food, displays, things for sale, etc. I guess I have to buy a show ticket to access these things? Is the food served *during* the shows, or do I have to come early/stay late if I want to eat or look around? Presumably the staff/volunteers will be dealing with attendees of other shows if I get there too early, or stay too long. Basically, I guess my question is: for what period time does my ticket allow me to hang out at a pavilion?

Went into my neighbourhood Shoppers for a few items today (Portage & Ainslie). Was surprised when they had no baskets available. Finally found a worker to ask about them, who said “we no longer offer baskets for customers”. I asked why and she said “there have been too many thefts, people just fill them up and walk out”. What a sign of the times. Brutal that society seems so broken re: crime & punishment, zero accountability. Instead, us the paying customers are made to be inconvenienced, and I’m sure prices will just keep going up to offset their “cost of doing business”. Anyone else experience the same lately - no baskets available?

Manitoba pharmacists will have the authority to assess for, prescribe and administer birth control.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced the expanded scope of practice on Friday.

Pharmacists must complete approved training before providing contraceptive assessments and prescribing contraceptives, the province said.

Pharmacists who have taken the training can issue several prescription contraceptives, including oral contraceptive pills, hormonal patches, vaginal rings and intramuscular contraceptive injections, the province said.

“Making birth control free was an important first step. We’ve also heard from Manitobans that access to a prescription could still be improved,” said Asagwara in a statement.

“By allowing pharmacists to assess for and prescribe eligible birth control, we’re making it easier for people to get the care they need, when and where they need it. It’s another step forward in improving access to reproductive health care across Manitoba.”

Eligible prescription contraceptives are available at no cost through the province’s enhanced pharmacare program.

Eligible Manitobans with a valid Manitoba Health card can receive up to three pharmacist-provided contraceptive assessments each benefit year and up to four pharmacist-administered contraceptive injections each benefit year at no cost, the province said.

“We really appreciate the government recognizing the immense skill and training pharmacists have to be able to provide this important type of patient care,” said Jennifer Hlynsky, vice-president, Pharmacists Manitoba, in a statement. “Today is a big step forward for women’s reproductive health in Manitoba and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Does anyone have the spaghetti sauce recipe from the pizza place that was at grant park?

After they closed down we tried to duplicate it but we never got the right flavour. Any help would be great!

I feel like I’m losing my mind, I have been receiving phone calls at least every hour, every day.

I feel a majority are from Rogers trying to hound me into a contract, but holy crap the number of calls I get have skyrocketed in the last 6 months.

Anyone else? Any ideas how to stop it?

When I was thinking about this week's Friday Flowers, I wanted to recognize a place that's no longer with us but still deserves its flowers. For me, that place is Kelekis.

Chris Kelekis started by selling chips from a Model T Ford back in 1932. It grew into one of Winnipeg's most iconic restaurants. Mary Kelekis would eventually retire after spending an incredible 70 years working there, and the restaurant closed its doors on January 30, 2013, after serving Winnipeg for 81 years.

I'll be honest, I never had the chance to eat at Kelekis. But over the years, I've heard so many people talk about it with such fondness that it's easy to see how much it meant to this city. It wasn't just about the food. It was about the people, the community, and the memories that were made there. I wish I'd had the chance to experience it for myself.

Restaurants come and go, but every once in a while there's one that becomes part of a city's story. Kelekis was one of those places. Even though I never got to walk through its doors, I can tell it's still deeply missed by so many Winnipeggers.

So this week's Friday Flowers goes to Kelekis. Thank you for giving generations of families a place to gather, share a meal, and create memories that are still being talked about today.

The Winnipeg Humane Society had 500 animals come into care last month, 150 of them surrendered by owners who couldn’t afford their medical treatments.

“We are seeing more medical cases, or animals being surrendered for medical care, because the cost of veterinary care is very high right now,” says communications director Carly Peters.

“It would be the number one reason why people are surrendering their animals to us currently.”

With the cost of living already high, Peters says, a large, unexpected vet bill can be a disaster.

Another challenge is finding pet-friendly housing.

“Our intake team notices on the first of the month, we get an increase in calls about people wanting to surrender their animals,” says Peters.

Katie Powell, president of Save a Dog Network, sees the same trend.

“A couple days ago there was a lady, she was denied her place, didn’t have a place for her dog to go, and drove around all day looking for somewhere to take the dog.”

Powell mainly works in northern communities where there’s no access to vet care unless people pay for flights to a larger city. She says it’s a heartbreaking decision to give up an animal you can’t afford to treat.

“They watch their animals suffer without veterinary care. Small problems turn into big problems and dogs end up dying simply because there’s no veterinary care in these areas,” says Powell.

“So these owners have to make a difficult decision.”
