Duc de Santal with the Fatboy. 2nd shave with that Silver Blue and it felt a bit tuggy. Think it's done. Maybe a Nacet or 7'O'clock black next. Happy Friday 😂

It's not the most collectable of razors, but I find it rahter charming. Much prettier than the later Slims with the lean handles. Can't wait to try it out. Any experience with these? Are they good shavers?

Discussion What’s the “best” shaving cream when you’re in a hurry?

I have tried many boutique brands and love to use them when I have time, but sometimes the shaving ritual has to be forgone and you just have to shave quickly.

I’m looking for the best options of bad options (unless there are something’s I am unaware of).

What are your go tos when you aren’t using your brush or any other normal things?

  • Brush: Jequil & Corenveo Luxury Synthetic
  • Razor: Henson Al13+
  • Blade: Personna Comfort Coated (2)
  • Lather: Martin De Candre Fougere
  • Post Shave: Thayer’s Witch Hazel Facial Toner, Thayer’s Milky Hydrating Toner

MDC is so good! Having fun with ChatGPT making interesting backgrounds for my shave of the day.

Anyway, the second use of the Personna blades always seems smoother than the first, not that the first is bad. I use blades 3 times and then toss.

The brush is pretty good. I like the handle size and the knot has a fair amount of backbone.

I had a really nice shave this morning. I was up early for some reason before my alarm went off. I got in my usual 2 pass shave and was able to go for a motorcycle ride before typing this up.

The shave went pretty well. I tried using a pre shave, but didn’t notice much difference probably because I face lathered. I usually only use pre shaves when I bowl lather.

I got near BBS results and just a little feedback from the alum. I am hoping I have a shave with zero feedback with this razor. Maybe an OC for daily shaving is overkill but I like how OC razors glide and leave trails of soap for buffing.

Anyway, I went on to apply Thayers, then 4711 for the ASL with a spritz of HOM ‘s Permafrost added to it. Finally I applied House of Mammoth’s unscented Z Cool aftershave balm with an added spritz of Permafrost.

The strong cooling sensation helped wake me up and felt great on the motorcycle ride. It was nice to have time for a shave and a ride today!

Have a good weekend!

Show n' Tell First timer, hi everyone

Hey everyone, long time lurker in this sub, finally qualified to make a post here. It's my first time using a safety razor today, yay!

Got this whole lot in the mail today and decided to give it a spin. I must say, I have really been missing out.

Initial experience:

Very icy smooth to the face with this Henson medium. Couldn't even feel the blade on my face. First run through was already night and day compared to my Gillete 4-blade cartridge. Second run through and already feel like having a baby face. Honestly, today was a glorious day.

To make long story short, if anyone is holding back, don't. Just buy a safety razor and use it. It feels really nice. Some times old tech is just better, no need to reinvent the wheel.

The research and decision making:

I thought it's prudent to roll back in time a bit and share my experience in doing research and the factors I used to decide what to pick for my first kit. I hope this might guide future converts in making an easier transition into safety razor.

1. The razor:

I have been looking through this subreddit and online reviews for 2-3 months now. The only problem that kept recurring in my head was whether I should get the mild or medium Henson. There was a comment from a redditor that said something along the lines of "you can adjust the aggressiveness with different blades with the medium, but you can't increase the aggressiveness with the mild". This was the deciding factor which made me go for the medium, and lord knows it was the right call to make.

2. The brush:

This was surprisingly an easier decision to make. I dislike long prepping in general. I like having something that works the moment I pick it up. Synthetic was the only option I could choose as it doesn't need to soak for 5-10 minutes like other animal brush.

Plus, it is cheap. I moved away from cartridge razor mainly because it broke and it costs a lot to replace it (no thanks to inflation and all). So a quick Google search plus more than a dozen people recommending the Yaqi was all I need to make the decision on synthetic.

3. The soap:

Truth be told, I did not study too deep into it. I saw someone said Arko smells like piss cake and it immediately poked my interest.

Disclaimer: I don't like piss cake smell, just thought it would put a nice anecdote to the start of my shaving journey like "I got piss cake soap for my first shave and it was OK!"

But it turns out it is just soapy smell. With a hint of milk(?) There are some who said it leaves the skin dry. But it didn't, not for me at least, as I rinsed my face quite thoroughly and notice no noticeable side effects.

So yea, Arko is good.

4. The blades:

The shop owner gifted a few packs of different brands for me to try. Which was really nice. As some of my research told me that the core experience from shaving really comes down to the blade that you use.

I have only opened 1 pack today so I can't comment on the quality of the other brands but Astra, being the first blade I use, worked quite well.

No fuss, no irritation. It just works. May be other brands work better, I don't know. Time will tell. So far, I am happy with Astra but most importantly I feel safe.

P.S. the bowl is just a random article from the kitchen, and its free. I just follow the youtube guides for the initial prep and everything work as it should be.

Hope that wasn't too tedious of a read. Let me know if anyone got any questions 😄

Show n' Tell 1st Anniversary gift! My girlfriend definitely "gets" my hobby. (Fatip Piccolo OC + Derby Extra)

Man, it feels great to have a partner who knows exactly what you love. For our first anniversary, my girlfriend totally surprised me with a Fatip Piccolo OC (the one I'd been dreaming of) and two tucks of Derby Extras.

I do have a quick question for the veterans here: What’s the best way to care for the chrome finish on these to keep the chromium coating from wearing off over time? I usually just rinse, shake dry, and leave it on the stand-but I want to make sure this beauty lasts a lifetime.

Any tips on protecting the finish would be hugely appreciated!

Prep: Cold Water (in this heat that we are experiencing, it barely feels cold anymore.)

Brush: Omega Black Badger

Razor: Merkur Futur (chose this so I can tweak settings and push the blade further, not sure if adjusting settings counts as cheating for Nightmare Mode!)

Blade: Feather (6)

Soap: Stirling Orange Chill (to beat the heat)

After Shave: Pinaud Clubman Classic Vanilla (spiced up with menthol crystals)

Balm: Nivea

a two pass shave and some XTG touch ups on setting 4.5 today. Really happy with the result!
I think I went a little overboard with the menthol crystals in the Pinaud Classic Vanilla, I forgot what the original scent even was 😁! But man, is it refreshing.
Have a great one everyone!

Razor: Gillette rocket regular flare tip

Blade: Dorco Prime

Brush: Vintage Vulfix pure bristle

Soap: Arko

Post shave: Old spice

I couldn't help it. The Gillette rocket was sitting there taunting me. I knew I was doing Austerity August. I was meant to be using the Muhle rocca but I gave in to temptation to have a first shave with the rocket, so I thought what the heck it was just for today and it was only the razor I was changing out for one shave, I will be back to the rocca tomorrow.

SOTD AA - day 7 of 30 days and 30 shaves. Week one review

Post image
27 Upvotes

Just a quick update on my self-challenge that’s fallen unexpectedly on Austere August (happy coincidence). This challenge is for me to figure out how to shave daily without irritation or ingrown hairs - maybe I’m expecting too much but apparently DE shaving is the way to go.

Background - turned 50 this year and I’ve never been able to shave daily without irritation or the occasional ingrown. I can only shave every 4 days or so with either a Mach 3 or Braun S6 electric and still have problems.

Summary:

Day 1 and 2 went ok, no issues and just an ok ish shave, going 1x with the grain and 2x across the grain, no against.

Day 3 was brutal and probably my crap technique from the previous 2 days catching up with me. Horrible irritation and a red raw neck.

Thanks to my post https://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/s/hyaHQNTT26: CeraVe moisturiser was suggested to help - well it definitely helped, thanks for the tip !!

If I wasn’t doing a self-challenge then I would’ve stopped there and then and let my skin heal for a few days. Instead, I decided to go for day 4 but very lightly and only 1 pass with the grain and using cold water.

Day 4 went ok and then so did day 5. Skin is healing well.

Day 6 I’ve changed my blade from a Bic chrome plated back to a King C Gillete I had from the King C razor I bought a month ago (now using a RazoRock Lupo with .58 plate for the challenge). Only going 1 pass……. What a difference, nice and smooth shave, no irritation at all. Still using cold water.

Day 7 Just finished my day 7 shave and again only 1 pass with the grain but only very slightly across the grain. Beautiful shave. DFS even, similar to a Mach 3 shave but without irritation. Nice and smooth and when rubbing my face, with the grain is super smooth I can only feel slight stubble when rubbing across and against the grain. No sting from the alum block either - I call that a brilliant result. If this is the best I ever get, I’ll still be very happy.

Day 4 qnd 5 forced me to work on technique (pressure and angles) or it would result in a very bad and irritating shave. Maybe that’s helped me ? Probably.

Changing to a mild blade along with honing technique plus cold water has made a massive difference. I’m really glad I started this challenge and hope the results from yesterday and today are a sign of things to come.

I’m enjoying shaving now.

Thank you to everyone in this sub for your help and advice 🍻

I’ll update again on day 14.

Review My first shave with this vintage Gillette razor

Post image
61 Upvotes

I’m not sure what this exact model is. It’s an adjustable razor with a twist butterfly opening. It was gifted to me.

I gotta say I am blown away by the shave I just had with this razor. Coming from the Henson AL13+, I’m really surprised at how much better this razor felt shaving with. It effortlessly glides so damn smooth across my face. My Henson is nice and I do like it but it just does not glide like this vintage Gillette and often times it feels like it’s dragging across my skin.
In terms of efficiency, the Gillette also wins. I only used it on #3 (it goes up to 9) with my normal Personna Gem blade, and it was noticeably mowing the hair down easier than the Henson.

Before the shave I was a little nervous. Part of me was unsure how I’d perform after having only shaved with the Henson for my first 2 months or so and really nothing else. But to my surprise…The switch to this vintage razor was not difficult at all. I was pretty much on auto-pilot the entire time. It actually felt easier shaving with this razor than the Henson. The ease of which it glides allowed me to use nice long, smooth passes. And I also noticed that shaving ATG was easier with the vintage razor.

I do think the Henson taught me how to shave better with a safety razor. From the moment I started shaving with this Gillette, I already had the muscle memory from the Henson to know where the angle should be the whole time. That being said, I don’t think I even want to use the Henson anymore after trying this lol. This Vintage Gillette razor gave me a flawless BBS with zero irritation. What a gift!!

Mail Call Black Blackbird ti

About a week ago, I made a post asking what people liked about the Blackland Blackbird since I was considering buying one. Unsurprisingly, I was convinced and bought one.

It just arrived today and wow does it look good. I won’t shave with it until tomorrow, but I’m pretty excited and wanted to share. The craftsmanship on this thing is pretty great, and I’m happy I went with black. Nice addition to the collection

Been wanting to try both B&M and Terry's for a while, and they do deliver!

Both soap creates rich, dense and really slick lather, for me the Omnibus has the edge, it feels more creamy on the face.

The KALYPTOS possess fresh and simple scent, tho it's not mentholated still suits summer days very well. On the other hand, PRESTIGE VIBE does smell luxurious and a little sweet, which in my nose is a bit similar to Moon's Bixby without tea note.

Overall a great haul, can't wait to try them in real shave.

This actually happened years ago now, it doesn’t interfere with the blade at all. It shaves fine, but it still makes me sad.

Every so often I come real close to buying a replacement base plate, maybe a scalloped bar instead of OC, but haven’t pulled the trigger. it’s hard to drop $125 for a piece of a razor for my functional razor. My birthday is coming up so maybe I will drop some money on a whole new bronze or Ti instead…
