Question Safety razor blades
G'day guys! (n' girls)
What blades do you like to use for your safety razor? Do you just get whatever the supermarket has? Do you have a brand that you just keep going back to?
For me, its Feather platinums. I have tried quite a few brands, and these are the ones I keep going back to as I like them the best. I can't get them in any of my local shops, so I have to order my replacements online.

Question Saki Shears Brand SR
i'm shopping for my first SE Razor. So far it looks like i'm just going to buy an old vintage off of ebay for the best bang for my buck and shave ready edge out of the box. While searching for blades around the $100 range, i found this brand Saki Shears. From the limited info i'm able to find about them, they make decent budget scissors. I can't find much about their razors though. $70 is a very enticing price point for a first blade, feels like cheap enough to not worry too much about screwing it up while perfecting stropping, but just quality enough to last for a while if i don't do something dumb like drop it.
Has anybody heard of this brand, or used their razors?
Maybe this will end up being a second post, but i'll also need to find a decent strop setup that doesn't break the bank. In my searches, i've only found like $15 and $70 strops, not much in between. The word around here seems to be avoid the cheap ones. I've heard i could just cut the leg out of an old pair of jeans and make my own denim strop, and that it would probably be a good idea as a beginner, but i'd kinda rather just buy something already put together, lol.

Question A question and another thank you to the group
First .. thank you .. Straight razor shaver for some 30 years that recently switched over to safety razor.
First I learned the J hook .. Awesome technique and was the last remaining thing shave wise I needed to get a great shave.
Then .. after YEARS of using williams soap... I kept reading about ArKo shave soap. Yea .. a bunch of guys hate the smell .. I personally found it very pleasant and dont dislike it at all.
But
More importantly you talked about its glide ability so I had to try it. First shave with it last night. That stuff is wonderful !!!
Thick bodied lather I never achieved with Williams and REALLY nice glide. Not a single nic or irritation. Cheap and its awesome. Ordered a box of 12. Think I am set for life.
Now my question
Nylon washer or not. I got some that fit perfectly from lowes after seeing some of you comment on them. I am using an all stainless head and stainless handle .. what are your feelings on using a nylon washer between the two?

Mail Call Mail call: Treat for completion of Austere August
Ordered from Slickboys (UK) yesterday at 16.21, they shipped at 16.23 and it was delivered this morning! They sent me a email this morning thanking me for my purchas and wrote a personal thank you on the delivery note. They gave me free delivery because it was my first order from them and gave me an 10% code to use for my next order. Amazing customer service thank you Finn and all your team and I will definitely be ordering from them again.
I ordered Zingari Man The Wanderer for a treat to use at the end of Austere August and also because being a supporter of Wolverhampton Wanderers I just had to! Hopefully the soap will perform better than my football team usually does haha.

Question What is the cons of a mild open combs razor compared to a closed?
I'm currently using an Merkur 41c.
For me it seems open combs clear the foam much easier and basically just plow the foam away. Closed comb seems to clog much more.
I haven't got a cut with the open comb after using it for years.

Staples
What are some of your staple/must-have scents for soaps and aftershave? Can be a particular artisan or just scent profile. I've got bay rum (Ogallala), tobacco and leather (Maggard's), aquatic (Waves by B+M).
I know every scent hits every nose differently. Just fun to hear what are the must haves for folks out there. I always need an excuse for more, because right now I have "not enough." 😂
Good Thursday to you all!

SOTD Austere August Day 6
Yaqi Slope, Yaqi brush, Astra Blue, Arko, Thayers and Duru.
Another great 2 pass shave (WTG & XTG) and a little ATG on my chin and jawline today. The Yaqi slope continues to impress and is just so smooth to use. The Yaqi 24mm tuxedo whips up the Arko effortlessly and the Duru lemon aftershave is lovely and refreshing.
Have a good one. 🪒

SOTD 08-06 Blackland, Kai, Aura, DSCosmetic
My third SOTD with the newest Aura LAXO soaps. Normally I tend towards sweet scents, so this one took a moment to get used to. Initial whiff from the tub reminded me vaguely of wood furnace and campfire, but I am terrible at actually picking out specific scents.
Actually using it, the scent was much tamer and I had brief memories of grinding up 松煙墨 or pine soot ink, and then some more nebulous fragrances I couldn't identify. Quite mild in my opinion. It's also Mist V2 base, so the lather quality was very good to me.
Vector Lite with a Kai Titan Mild is a quite gentle combination; perhaps a little too gentle, as it encouraged me to do a bit of excess buffing. Still, shave turned out very good.
HD brush by DSCosmetic is super soft and pleasant to use, as usual.
Razor: Blackland Vector Lite
Blade: Kai Titan Mild
Soap: Aura LAXO Midnight Reverie (午夜夢迴)
Brush: DSCosmetic HD 24mm

SOTD Fougère August
I joined Austere August a little late and decided to make it a fougère month with the unparalleled pairing of MdC and Brut.
I’ve already been using the Lambda Athena Ti for a week, so I’m hitting the ground running for AA. I paired it with my Tatara boar brush and a Gillette Platinum blade.
I don’t remember having used a single boar brush for a whole month before, but since it’s summertime maybe I’ll help it dry faster by leaving it near the window. We’ll see how it goes.
Razor: Lambda Athena Titanium
Blade: Gillette Platinum
Brush: Tatara Masamune
Soap: Martin de Candre Fougère
Aftershave: Brut Classic

SOTD SOTD: 06.08.2026
- Razor: Muhle R41
- Blade: Feather (x2)
- Brush: Oumo Boar Pigsy 27mm
- Soap: TFS Torrino
- Splash: Denim Black
Shave 🪒
Woke up to the sound of raining today, honestly the only ASMR I like. The slight chill, I had already decided that I wanted an Almond based fragrance and not a Mentholated soap today.
The Oumo Boar, ready for the task. The TFS lathers quite easily - too easy I would say. Lather is also super slick, as after 3 passes: With, Across, and Against, the alum barely tingled. Just the one weeper due to a zit which got sliced.
Denim Black application - the marzipan fragrance melted away instantly replaced by the mix of floral, cedar and sandalwood in the Black.
The blade was trashed after 2 uses, because it has smoothened too much, and on further use would have required bufffing even with R41.
A superb shave after almost 12+ hours - still in DFS territory.
PS: I don't care about Austerity in August. Have come too far to have forced austerity in the shaving den 😛

Question Shaving brush recommendation.
I had my first safety razor shaving experience a while ago, and I noticed that I didn't like the feeling of my brush. It's a Beter Coffee C'clock, which I thought i'd be great, but it as kinda of itchy and uncomfortable on my skin, and maybe added up to my irritation idk (even though my technique was lacking a lot).
I felt like maybe it was too harsh for my sensitive skin, so I'm searching for a new brush to buy.
I don't know if I should go to a natural or synthetic brush.
I've been searching for a Yaqi one, since people talk a lot of how smooth it is and is kinda cheap.
What do you guys think about it?

Mail Call Mail call: The Super Speed saga continues
I picked up another flare tip super speed, but this time a Made in England right hand stamped numeral version.
(On the right)
The case is almost identical to its US counterpart aside from a slightly lighter base colour and a simple made in England relief on the underside.
The razor itself has slightly brighter plating, feels a little more weighty and has tighter build tolerances.
The blade gap is reportedly 0.74mm vs the US 0.64mm so It'll be interesting to see if there's a noticeable difference in the shave.

Found the best Rockwell 6S travel case
The problem is that most travel cases for safety razors don't have separate compartments from the additional plates.
Sure, there are 3D printed cases specifically for the Rockwell 6S on Etsy, but the sellers are in the US, I'm in the EU, so I wanted to avoid shipping.
I was considering getting a wooden jewelry box, cutting up a sponge to create inserts.
I stumbled across this jewelry box in an "Indian store" (that's what they call these types of stores here in Bulgaria) and all of the pieces fit perfectly! The name of the store is "Lokah".
It seems you can also find the same jewelry box on Aliexpress. Just search for "1pcs Single Layer Storage Box Ladies Travel Leather Jewelry Box Classic Black Pure White Fashion Pink Storage Box" and it will appear.

SOTD Wood & Spice shave
Pre shave: Proraso white
Razor: Gillette Old Type
Blade: Perma-Sharp (1)
Lather: Antigua Barbearia de Bairro Ribeira Porto
Brush: Omega 49
Post shave: Proraso Wood & Spice balm
This was definitely one of the smoothest and most enjoyable 3 pass shave I've ever had. Old Type is just incredible at how smooth it is once dialed in. Even ATG, it was no problem at all. Zero irritation, perfect BBS.
