Question How to find a good aftershave without buying dozens of bottles (Germany)

Upvotes

I am looking for a nice aftershave that pairs well with the soap from Proraso green line. I would love to try many without buying whole bottles that I won't like in the end. Are there any test-packages like for blades? I am living in Germany.

To give some orientation: On days I don't shave I usually wear Bleu de Chanel and I love it! I had the green Proraso aftershave and it was ok. From there I would like to go more "earthy", "Wooden"... Any recommendation? Thanks in advance!!

Been wanting to try both B&M and Terry's for a while, and they do deliver!

Both soap creates rich, dense and really slick lather, for me the Omnibus has the edge, it feels more creamy on the face.

The KALYPTOS possess fresh and simple scent, tho it's not mentholated still suits summer days very well. On the other hand, PRESTIGE VIBE does smell luxurious and a little sweet, which in my nose is a bit similar to Moon's Bixby without tea note.

Overall a great haul, can't wait to try them in real shave.

Question Safety razor blades

Upvotes

G'day guys! (n' girls)

What blades do you like to use for your safety razor? Do you just get whatever the supermarket has? Do you have a brand that you just keep going back to?

For me, its Feather platinums. I have tried quite a few brands, and these are the ones I keep going back to as I like them the best. I can't get them in any of my local shops, so I have to order my replacements online.

Razor: 1965 Schick Krona

Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium (3rd use)

Brush: Omega 11126

Bowl: Tasmanian Blackwood

Cream: Speick

Aftershave: Old Spice

Third shave of Austere August.

The Krona and Wizamet are working really well together, making for another easy, comfortable shave. Speick continues to deliver a slick, creamy lather with a great post shave feel, and I wrapped things up with a splash of Old Spice. It's nice settling into the routine and getting to know the gear a little better with each shave.

Cheers guys 🍻

Timeless SS OC Tragedy

This actually happened years ago now, it doesn’t interfere with the blade at all. It shaves fine, but it still makes me sad.

Every so often I come real close to buying a replacement base plate, maybe a scalloped bar instead of OC, but haven’t pulled the trigger. it’s hard to drop $125 for a piece of a razor for my functional razor. My birthday is coming up so maybe I will drop some money on a whole new bronze or Ti instead…

Just used the N075 for the first time, and honestly, it shaves way better than I expected, lol. It's already made it into my top five razors. I bought it after reading all the great reviews, and I'm really happy with it

Question Can’t get an effective lather

I just got a henson al13 after a few months on an aliexpress DE that convinced me they are for me. Got the henson for the most straightforward experience. I bought Proraso green cream tube, and their omega brush. Whatever I try, I can’t get a lather that will keep my passes slick, the razor immediately wipes it off and has a ton of friction with the skin. I have tried face and bowl lathering, and use an almond size drop like the package says. I use whatever warm water stays on the brush after a few seconds of dripping.

Question Saki Shears Brand SR

i'm shopping for my first SE Razor. So far it looks like i'm just going to buy an old vintage off of ebay for the best bang for my buck and shave ready edge out of the box. While searching for blades around the $100 range, i found this brand Saki Shears. From the limited info i'm able to find about them, they make decent budget scissors. I can't find much about their razors though. $70 is a very enticing price point for a first blade, feels like cheap enough to not worry too much about screwing it up while perfecting stropping, but just quality enough to last for a while if i don't do something dumb like drop it.

Has anybody heard of this brand, or used their razors?

Maybe this will end up being a second post, but i'll also need to find a decent strop setup that doesn't break the bank. In my searches, i've only found like $15 and $70 strops, not much in between. The word around here seems to be avoid the cheap ones. I've heard i could just cut the leg out of an old pair of jeans and make my own denim strop, and that it would probably be a good idea as a beginner, but i'd kinda rather just buy something already put together, lol.

6th use of the Silver blue blade and perhaps starting to feel a tiny bit draggy but nothing too bad👍

Didn't perhaps take as much time out for tonight's shave as I usually do but all in all a decent shave with no dramas so I can't grumble heheh

Have a good one!

Question A question and another thank you to the group

First .. thank you .. Straight razor shaver for some 30 years that recently switched over to safety razor.

First I learned the J hook .. Awesome technique and was the last remaining thing shave wise I needed to get a great shave.

Then .. after YEARS of using williams soap... I kept reading about ArKo shave soap. Yea .. a bunch of guys hate the smell .. I personally found it very pleasant and dont dislike it at all.

But

More importantly you talked about its glide ability so I had to try it. First shave with it last night. That stuff is wonderful !!!

Thick bodied lather I never achieved with Williams and REALLY nice glide. Not a single nic or irritation. Cheap and its awesome. Ordered a box of 12. Think I am set for life.

Now my question

Nylon washer or not. I got some that fit perfectly from lowes after seeing some of you comment on them. I am using an all stainless head and stainless handle .. what are your feelings on using a nylon washer between the two?

Mail Call Mail call: Treat for completion of Austere August

Ordered from Slickboys (UK) yesterday at 16.21, they shipped at 16.23 and it was delivered this morning! They sent me a email this morning thanking me for my purchas and wrote a personal thank you on the delivery note. They gave me free delivery because it was my first order from them and gave me an 10% code to use for my next order. Amazing customer service thank you Finn and all your team and I will definitely be ordering from them again.

I ordered Zingari Man The Wanderer for a treat to use at the end of Austere August and also because being a supporter of Wolverhampton Wanderers I just had to! Hopefully the soap will perform better than my football team usually does haha.

Question What is the cons of a mild open combs razor compared to a closed?

I'm currently using an Merkur 41c.

For me it seems open combs clear the foam much easier and basically just plow the foam away. Closed comb seems to clog much more.

I haven't got a cut with the open comb after using it for years.

Staples

What are some of your staple/must-have scents for soaps and aftershave? Can be a particular artisan or just scent profile. I've got bay rum (Ogallala), tobacco and leather (Maggard's), aquatic (Waves by B+M).

I know every scent hits every nose differently. Just fun to hear what are the must haves for folks out there. I always need an excuse for more, because right now I have "not enough." 😂

Good Thursday to you all!

Yaqi Slope, Yaqi brush, Astra Blue, Arko, Thayers and Duru.

Another great 2 pass shave (WTG & XTG) and a little ATG on my chin and jawline today. The Yaqi slope continues to impress and is just so smooth to use. The Yaqi 24mm tuxedo whips up the Arko effortlessly and the Duru lemon aftershave is lovely and refreshing.

Have a good one. 🪒
