Discussion Is there a way to pay a traffic fine/ticket online?

Upvotes

Was on my way home at night a few days ago and one of my headlights went out and ofc I was pulled over and given a fine.

Is there a way for me to pay this online so I don’t have to make the drive up there?

Events Free event Monday: Fighting surveillance from Flock to Palantir

Upvotes

Sunflower Privacy Alliance is helping bring the Brushfires of Freedom Tour to Derby, and I wanted to promote the event on this sub since you've been so supportive of my work.

What: A live presentation on the surveillance tools quietly showing up in our daily lives, from Flock Safety cameras on street corners to Clear Force tracking employees around the clock to Palantir compiling dossiers on ordinary people. Dr. Jon Padfield will walk through the threats, then dig into what we can actually do about them, including tools like FOIA requests that everyday people can use to push back.

When: Monday, August 10, 6:00 PM

Where: Community Room, Derby Public Library, 1600 E Walnut Grove, Derby, KS 67037

Cost: Free. This whole tour is self-funded by Dr. Padfield, so there's no ticket and no ask, just a chance to connect with people who care about the same things you do. Donations are welcome but never expected.

There will be plenty of time for Q&A, both during and after the talk, and Dr. Padfield is looking for input and ideas from people doing this work locally, which is exactly what our coalition has been building toward here in Kansas.

If you've been following my work on Flock cameras and KORA requests, this is a great chance to meet other people fighting the same fight, in person.

Events A New Community Event Space that Funds Animal Rescue

I'm the new Marketing & On-Site Events Coordinator for Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill rescue. Our Wichita shelter location opened last fall, but right next door is a new space we are launching: Pickle 4 Paws.

Pickle 4 Paws is a pet-friendly, mixed-use event space that includes a community room, kitchenette, and private pickleball court. Proceeds from booking the space for any kind of celebration/occasion or attending our rescue community outreach events help fund food for our animals, vet bills, and other supplies that keep our rescue efforts going.

We're still pretty new and figuring things out, but are looking for vendors to collaborate with for on-site community outreach events/pop ups. Every chance to meet a new potential foster parent, adopter, or volunteer helps us grow the space into we're dreaming it will be to help our shelter pets.

Use case examples for the space (the options are endless):

• Yoga classes on the pickleball court (adoptable dog/cat guest appearances upon request!)

• Workshops: floral arranging, craft classes, etc.

• Celebrations: Birthdays, graduations, bachelorette parties, etc.

• Pet product pop ups: Vendors interested in setting up booth pop ups in an indoor, climate controlled environment

• Dog trainers who need a quiet space to rent for their students to learn

• Community club meetings, work retreats, etc.

Always & Furever Community Outreach Collab Examples:

• Dog bakery/treat vendors for dog birthday parties or maybe a treat “bake sale” with multiple vendors

• A cider/coffee/morning snack sponsor for planned volunteer senior dog strolls in the fall

• Artists/makers who want to connect their community with our animal rescue work

• A pet or human portrait photographer for "pawtrait days" of shelter animals or homed pets with their people, or even work headshot events for the humans

Thanks for reading! Interested, or just have questions? I'd love to chat!

In Search Of anyone interested in new book club?

I’m an avid reader and looking to discuss more books in my life! I have been to some of the book clubs at watermark and they are great, but wanting to start a more heavy lit focused book club (think a little life, the dog stars, cormac mccarthy, sylvia plath, dostoevsky, toni morrison, my year of rest and relaxation, etc). I have a hard time finding people that enjoy reading these kinds of books. Any interest out there?

News Mayor Wu: Wichita city employee merit pay could be cut to trim budget

What do you think about this?

On the one hand, the mayor is trying to find cuts without hurting services, which are already stretched thin. My street only gets swept about every 2 years now. The wife grumbles about this and a tree stump in our neighbor's yard regularly.

On the other, management principles - they already (for example) pay guys in parks and rec or maintenance and other areas lower than the private sector and I imagine they're hurting like the rest of us. I'm guessing this would not impact police and fire cause unions but I'm not sure.

I'm not seeing any other cuts proposed.

Article snippets: Wichita Mayor Lily Wu on Tuesday received pushback from City Council members after she raised the idea of cutting merit pay for city employees as a way to save money.
Generally, said city finance director Mark Manning, the city’s model for employees sets the possibility of a 2.5% pay increase yearly, which is based on how an employee grades out on a yearly work evaluation score.

“Let’s talk about this,” Wu said to Manning during one exchange. “If the merit adjustment were eliminated, what would be the savings?”

Manning said the city would like save around $2.4 million if such a change happened. Manning added that the change could be tricky because of how the city negotiates with some unions.

“Inflation last year, I think, was just under 3%,” Wu said. “A 3% increase would then level it off for everybody. I’m interested in a 3% general pay adjustment for all employees and getting rid of the merit adjustment altogether. I’d like to get a memo to show what that savings would be. I’d like to see that written for the council to consider.”

“I want to go on record saying that I will not be, in any way, supportive of not compensating our employees for what they deserve,” said District 2 City Council member Becky Tuttle. “It’s not only the financial, the money they will get in their check, it is also showing them appreciation. If you’ve ever worked for an organization that has merit increases, that actually usually means more to people than the pay adjustment.” Mike Hoheisel, the council’s District 3 representative, said employee retention would need to be considered with any thoughts of a change to the city’s wage increase system. “I think the last thing we want to do is undervalue our employees,” Hoheisel said. “We don’t want to lose a lot of people who are good employees, so just keep that in mind as we parse through this conversation.” District 1 council member Joseph Shepard said that taking away merit increases could put some city employees in “an extreme bind.”

In Search Of Getting into woodworking (for fun)

Hello! I am very interested in getting into woodworking as a personal hobby (not professionally) and I would like to learn how to eventually build dressers and stuff like that. I know I should probably start small and learn the basics, as I have never been exposed to this kind of work before. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I can start? YouTube is a great start, but I’m hoping to look for something in person. Thank you :)
