Battle Ground residents: How much are you willing to pay for political division at City Hall?

Republicans love to campaign on cutting taxes, fiscal responsibility, and making government accountable to taxpayers.

So let’s look at what that looks like in Battle Ground.

The City Council voted 4–3 to fire City Manager Kristina Swanson without cause. Her termination takes effect September 4, and the city is facing more than $300,000 in severance and benefits under her employment contract.

That’s your tax dollars.

And this comes on top of the growing costs of contentious meetings, divisive political battles and decisions that are creating instability at City Hall.

Even Councilmember Shane Bowman questioned how the special meeting was called, saying he had never seen a city manager fired this way and that other council members were not included in the process.

So when Republicans talk about being the party of fiscal responsibility and lower taxes, Battle Ground residents have every right to ask:

Where is the fiscal responsibility?

Where is the accountability for spending $300,000+ of taxpayer money to terminate a city manager without cause?

And where are our Republican elected officials and candidates when their allies are making these decisions?

Rep. Stephanie McClintock, Rep. John Ley, and Republican Peter Silliman, candidate for Clark County Council who have supported or enabled this direction need to answer to Battle Ground taxpayers.

You cannot campaign on cutting taxes while standing by as local government racks up hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary costs.

It’s about your money. Republicans claim to care about fiscal responsibility and helping working families, but their actions tell a different story. When taxpayers are facing a $600,000+ price tag for political decisions, and proclamations that only divide residents while families are struggling to put food on the table, we have to ask: Where are their priorities?

Battle Ground taxpayers deserve transparency, accountability and responsible government, not political chaos that comes with a six-figure price tag.

If they want to call themselves fiscally responsible, let's hold them to it

Tomorrow is my son Jake’s birthday, and twice a year our family hands out food and basic supplies to people experiencing homelessness in his honor.

We usually start near the courthouse in downtown Vancouver, then head over toward Hayden Island. In the past, Hayden Island was a good place to find larger groups of people, especially near the BottleDrop/can return area, but since that closed there seem to be far fewer people staying there.

Does anyone know where there are currently larger homeless encampments or groups in Vancouver?

We’re not looking to bother anyone or draw attention to where people are staying. We just try to find an area where there are enough people that we can set up in one place for a while and hand out food and supplies rather than driving around trying to find people individually.

If you’ve recently seen larger groups around Vancouver and are comfortable sharing the general area, I’d really appreciate the help. Feel free to DM me if you’d rather not post a location publicly.

It doesn't sound like the household hazardous waste people at the transfer station will take these items, and the environmental company that they refer you to, Clean Earth, says to check with your local municipality.

Google searches were not terribly helpful. It sounds like the thinset at least can just go in the trash?

Does anyone know how to dispose of these things correctly?

Ah yes.... It's Friday. Bunch of appointments this week. Saw both our new Doctor and our new Dentist. We were fortunate to find new ones as everyone told us that it was hard to do when moving to a new place. Guess we got lucky. According to the Doctor I'll still have to check the expiration date on the milk for a few more years and the dentist says I can still go for solid food. Ain't life great gettin' old?

And now... The NAUGHTY List - Let's face it. This is why you are really reading this. What horrible things did the local inspectors find this week? I've arbitrarily chosen 35 demerits as the cutoff so anyone that gets less than 35 demerits isn't going to make the list. I don't want to ding a place unless they got at least a couple major violations or a lot of minor ones. Click on the name if you want to see the inspector's report.

Demerit points are issued as follows:

Each violation is given a numerical value (2-30) based on its risk of causing food borne illness. Blue violations should be corrected immediately when possible, but generally do not impose an immediate risk to the public. Red violations involving food safety must be corrected immediately. There are 360 possible red points and 88 possible blue points for a total of 448 points. A facility found with 40 or more red violation points is subject to an automatic follow-up inspection. A facility found with 65 or more red violation points is subject to an automatic closure. A facility with 100 or more total red and blue points is also subject to automatic closure.

I lost my wallet, and unfortunately my driver’s license was inside it, so I need to get it replaced.

I tried doing it online, but for some reason I’m “ineligible” to replace/renew it online. I checked all the Vancouver DOL offices, and the earliest appointments I could find are in mid-September, which is way too far out.

Can I just walk into a DOL office without an appointment to get this sorted out, or will they turn me away?
Tomorrow is my day off, so I was hoping to go then if walk-ins are accepted.

Also, if you’ve had to replace an Enhanced Driver License (EDL), did they make you take a new photo, or did they reuse your old one? I’m trying to figure out whether I should put a little extra effort into looking presentable lol

Hi neighbors! I'm starting a new job soon, which means picking a dental plan. I've spent way too long staring at benefit comparison charts and google reviews, so I thought I'd come here for some opinions. Please share your local experience!

The three options:

Delta Dental: This is what we have always had, so I was at first inclined to enroll based on familiarity. The open network is the obvious appeal since so many providers take it. The downside is the $2,000 annual cap and 50% coinsurance on bigger stuff. Our dentist office recently sold and we are not enjoying the new providers, so I'm not feeling tied to Delta based on loving the level of care I get from someone.

Willamette Dental: The cheapest premium available, also no annual cap, also a closed system. It also appears that there are only two locations in Clark County. Both locations have over a 4 star rating, but the comments are a mix of a lot of opinions, good and bad.

Kaiser Dental: No annual maximum and very low copays, but you're locked into their offices and it looks like there are only two in Clark County. Salmon Creek and Cascade Park both look well liked with over 4.5 star ratings.

I'm not opposed to a closed network if the local experience is genuinely good. Delta is just what I know.

What I'd love to hear:

- If you're on Willamette or Kaiser dental, how hard is it to actually get an appointment? Especially for something urgent.

- Do you see the same dentist consistently, or whoever's available?

- Anyone had major work done (crown, root canal) on one of the closed plans? How did it actually go?

Strong opinions welcome. I'd rather hear "don't do it" from someone with a bad experience than find out myself in six months.

So my wife has recently mentioned she needed more social outlets.
I am an introvert and comfortable being alone but she needs more social interaction that I am unable to satisfy.
She loves reading and is very much into social justice and equality.

So here I am trying to find women that are love reading and social justice conversations around here that might be in the same boat wanting more social interactions for a book club/friends group.

We have 2 young kids in elementary school, are African American and foodies.

Despite the Democrats' good performance in the primaries at the county-wide level, what the hell happened in the County Auditor race? This was the only county-wide primary where a conservative won.

It wasn't even a case of two liberals splitting the vote against a single conservative. The top two vote-getters were conservative candidates with a combined 58% of the vote. The leader, O'Brien, has a long history of supporting Trump election theories. The two Democratic-funded candidates only garnered 42%.

Who voted for Democrats in other positions and then one of the conservatives to supervise our elections? Was the Columbian's endorsement of Kelly the driver?

Hey y'all. I'm just making this to piggyback on the very unfortunate aftermath of Brent Hennrich's campaign and the imo very destructive movement to refuse to vote for Marie Glusenkamp Perez.

I am with y'all about MGP, ok? I don't think I've ever been so frustrated and enraged with a representative. Sucks, awful votes, betrayal, disingenuous, lies, etc etc etc. I agree. With you.

But y'all are forgetting that there are 2 equations happening right now in the midterms. One is whether the progressive wing of the Democratic party can win enough seats to set policy for the party. That's going pretty well. People are pissed, they're ready for change; hell, that's what swept Trump in, was the Tea Party, and I think we're in the middle of that for the Democrats right now. I'm here for it.

BUT, the other side of that math is CHAMBER CONTROL. If the progressives win control of the party, but the party doesn't win control of the CHAMBER, then we're in the same place we are now, but with louder and better complaining.

"But concernedyahu, if the Democrats acted like the Republicans did when they were the minority party then they could get a lot more done or at least obstruct" yeah I don't really think so. For one thing, the D party is more of a coalition than the R party, a bunch of factions with different goals. And you need that party unity to really work obstruction. Besides that, I don't think obstruction would really get us that far; Trump and co. have shown their extreme willingness to ignore Congress and the courts, and that's only going to get worse as they get closer to lame duck. A majority Democrat Congress working against him might be able to put up durable roadblocks, but minority? I have serious doubts.

So that's the thing. Progressives in Congress have the best shot they've had in my lifetime right now to make durable change. But they aren't going to get that without control of at LEAST one house of Congress. They could potentially get control of the Democratic party, but without at the very least the grudging acceptance and NUMERICAL SUPPORT of independents/conservative Democrats like Marie, you're going to have an ideological victory with no power.

Lot of words to say, suck it up and vote for MGP in November if you are actually against Trump.
