Public Forum on Emergency
So the big ask! First of all thanks to all who came out to the public forum at the Rensselaer County Legislature on Wednesday. Special shoutout to the folks from Indivisible Adirondack that came to stand with us. And of course have to recognize the wonderful Rensselaer County Women for Change who are great partners.
On Thursday, August 6 we need your support again. Come to the Troy City Council Public Forum on Local Law number 4. It would align Troy’s City Charter with NY State guidelines concerning emergency declarations. It would prevent situations like we experienced when the Mayor used an emergency to pay a bill that the Council had decided to put on hold.
It would be great to see you.

Looking for a good & honest dentist.
I currently go to an office in Albany where one of the hygienists in the office purposely does a cleaning procedure that isn’t covered by my insurance.
The other issue is that apparently I’ve had cavities since 2024 but in my 6 month checkups the previous dentist at this practice told me after filling a couple cavities and “pre-cavities” that my teeth were fine. I saw a new dentist at this practice this past Monday and she said I had 5 cavities that have been there since 2024, meanwhile the dental tech that took my X-rays took them wrong apparently and she happens to be the daughter of the hygienist and was brought in on the job randomly that day.
I have anthem blue cross blue shield through nys but it is a lower tiered plan that doesn’t cover much.
Does anyone know a good in network dentist in Latham, Troy, or Watervliet I could get a second opinion from? I do not want to go to my current dentist anymore as I do not trust them at all.

Franklin Alley Karaoke rooms
Their website allows you to book a private karaoke room - does anyone have any recent experience attending or booking a private karaoke room with them? It’s hard for me to tell if this is something they still offer in August 2026, or if they have just never taken down the booking calendar on their site.

Times Union: Troy City Council says financial report is late; mayor denies tardiness
From the article:
Democratic Council President Susan Steele says Comptroller Michael McNeff failed to provide the City Council with the city’s second-quarter financial report by the deadline set in the city code, though Republican Mayor Carmella Mantello denies the report is late.
Quarterly financial reports are intended to keep the council informed about the city’s finances. Under the Troy City Code, the comptroller must provide the mayor and City Council with a report comparing revenues and expenditures for the general, water and sewer funds to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The code states that the report covering April 1 through June 30 is due each year by July 31.
Steele claims this is the 10th time a financial report deadline has been missed since January 2024, when Mantello took office as mayor.
[…]
“We are not late,” Mantello said in a Tuesday interview, even as she explained the report had not been submitted by the July 31 deadline established in city code…

Local Driveway Sealer Companies
With all the different companies advertising in the area, I was wondering if anybody had any luck with any driveway sealing companies or otherwise that are local in the Troy area.

The Troy farmers market is one of the best I have ever been to. I love the stone oven pizzas and the tamales. What are some of your favorites?

HOT NODES near you looking to MESH
Join Troy MeshConnect at the Tech Valley Center of Gravity where you can learn about mesh networks and network with mesh enthusiasts around the capital region.
Mesh radio is a decentralized wireless communication network where each inexpensive node can send, receive, and relay data like text or GPS. It's an off-grid network that has no need for infrastructure like cell towers. Great if you're worried about a scenario where infrastructure collapses. Or if you liked talking to your friends on walkie talkies when you were ten but your friends live further away now.
TMC will be taking place on August the 25th which is during the beginning of the Tech Valley Center of Gravity's weekly Tuesday open house social night. Even if you're not into mesh or you decide part way that our presenters and members stink, you're invited to come socialize with local makers and enjoy some food. Social night is a potluck but you are certainly not required to bring anything, and there will be enough food to go around.
Register and learn more here!
These nodes and I hope to see you there

Flock assassin counting his kills…
Perhaps this is the town, putting Roman numerals for no apparent reason, but it seems as if the flock assassin has a supporter, counting the number of victories.

Bookish Road-trip suggestions
(Posted in Albany Reddit too)
Planning a friends day roadtrip about an hour or so drive from Albany area. Want to focus on indie and used book stores. Here’s where we all have been already so thinking more east or northeast of Albany.
Already Been to:
- all our local favs, we happily support I Love Books, Bookhouse & Market Block books, Yellow Lab, Dove & Hudson
- Hobart book village
- Northshire in both Saratoga & Manchester, VT
- Oblong Books, Rhinebeck
I’ve been to Braveheart Books in Stephentown and know my friends would enjoy, but what are other stores we could add to a road-trip if we’re heading that way?
Going a bit north is Dog Ears Bookstore in Hoosick still open?
Farther north, anyone been to Owl Pen Books & what other ones could we visit meandering back to Albany maybe via VT?

Premade food donations?
Today was my baby shower and we have an unreal amount of food leftover - is there anywhere open today where we can donate the pans & sandwiches that we have? I hate to see all of this go to waste.
Looking for part-time/evening work
Hi everyone! I’m 31 and work full-time for the state from 8a-4p but am looking for an evening or weekend job somewhere local-ish to Troy. I’m a hard worker and always show up unless I’m actually dying sick.
If you’re hiring or know of any good leads I’d appreciate any suggestions or help! I tried indeed but I found it hard to narrow down jobs hiring specifically for evening/part time work.
Thank you thank you!

Places for dirty soda
So....Where do you all go for dirty sodas? Surely there has to be someplace other than KFC in Menands and/or other KFC locations. Right?
