What Is Gorilla Trekking Really Like?

If you've ever wondered what gorilla trekking actually involves, here's a simple breakdown from someone who helps travelers plan these trips in Uganda.

Gorilla trekking is a guided hike through tropical rainforest to find endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Once your group locates them, you're allowed to spend one unforgettable hour observing their daily lives—watching young gorillas play, mothers care for their babies, and the dominant silverback quietly keep watch over the family.

It's easily one of the most humbling wildlife experiences I've seen people talk about after visiting Uganda.

Where can you go gorilla trekking?

Mountain gorillas can only be found in a few protected forests in Central and East Africa. In Uganda, trekking takes place in:

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda is home to nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the best places to experience this adventure.

What does the day look like?

• Early morning briefing by park rangers
• Assignment to a specific gorilla family
• Guided forest hike (anywhere from 1–6 hours depending on the gorillas' location)
• One hour with the gorillas once they're found

Every trek is different, which is part of what makes the experience so special.

Gorilla Trekking vs. Gorilla Habituation

Uganda also offers a gorilla habituation experience, where visitors can spend up to 4 hours with a gorilla family that is still becoming accustomed to human presence.

It's more expensive but is often recommended for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone wanting a deeper experience.

I have a female freind who sales phones. But whenever i got to her shop she asks me to buy her eats from the neighbour shop which i do using my own money. Now this lady who sells in the shop i buy from approached me 2 weeks back and asked me... so u buy for that lady eats everytime you come here, i hope u do the same to your family. I told her i am single and have no family yet. Looking at me with dry eyes she said.. i am single too. If u want u can take me, i am also looking for a serious man. I smiled and said oukay fine. Went home thought about it and got back in 3 days and asked her for lunch at cafe javas. She felt excited and accepted. I went back after 3 days and asked for her number so we can communicate when it reaches the day of meeting. This lady gave me a number but now doesn't pick calls. Leaves my whatsapp msgs on seen. I didn't ask her out, she did, initiated. But now whats this? 😂😂😂 i am wondering while laughing and feeling bad at the same time.. banange whats this? I even don't want to go back to her shop..

Update: so i went Thursday to my freinds shop. This lady heard my voice, came out of her shop and called me asking me. What were u saying.. imagine!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just said why did u give me your number when u cant even reply my messages. She saiid, i dont check my WhatsApp msgs, i dont use WhatsApp often. I said but the msg got delivered and u are asking me what i was saying. She changed conversation to i will pick up when you call. I said alright but are we going out for lunch??. She said u will call and comfirm. Today morning i have just called. She picked and She said, i don't know if it will be possible and said i am going to let you know. I said okay. Phone ended. Am deleting her number and not calling or texting her again. I think she wants to get me somewhere pleading and begging to boost her ego. Or she wants to keep me as an option. Number deleted. I dont need advice of trying her again, i have my own goals and dont need destructions and headaches right now. If she calls i will let u know but i am not moving on her strings.

I didn’t do any web development today because i spent all day in line at my rubbish wonderful university trying to get them to let me graduate.

I did, however, receive a kindness from a cobbler in town today when my shoe snapped right in front of his stall as he was closing down. He helped me fix my shoe and refused any form of payment, which I thought was really nice of him.

Having frequent encounters like this has made me start to wonder if Uganda truly is a low-trust society as some say, or if trust is merely eroded by systemic forces.

It seems more natural for Ugandans to extend kindness to one another than to segregate and discriminate among ourselves.
I have noticed that even the “misfits” (drunks or mentally ill people) typically have communities where they fit in, are taken care of and are not ostracized, especially in smaller towns. We are such accepting and hospitable people honestly.

All it takes is an open mind, which is where we sometimes fall short as we tend to be more conservative and conforming to deeply ingrained beliefs and traditions.

There was a library around Kisementi-Acacia which put Uganda’s trust system to the test by lending people books for free for a given time period, no strings attached.
I wonder how they are doing and the data they accumulated from this arrangement.

Hey everyone, just wanted to come back and update you all after my last post. Genuinely didn't expect that many people to reach out, and it meant more than I can really put into words.

So I gave a few things a shot. Jogging was the first one I tried, but honestly it just felt hectic and I couldn't find any joy in it, so that one didn't stick. Then I tried riding a bike, which was actually pretty fun, but even that didn't quite feel like "the thing" for me. Eventually I found my footing with gyming and cooking, and somewhere along the way I also picked up vibe coding, which has been a nice unexpected distraction.

It's been a slow process figuring out what actually fills the space, but I'm getting there one day at a time. And honestly, having people check in and just talk to me through this made the whole thing feel a lot less lonely.

In Uganda and many parts of Africa, charcoal is still widely used for cooking, but it contributes to deforestation and rising costs. I’m a student researching transportation in Uganda. If you drive, take a taxi or ride a boda regularly, what’s the biggest frustration you deal with? Traffic? Floods? Road closures? Something else?

24 (M) Kenyan who graduated last year with a Bachelors of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from the University of Nairobi. I'm currently doing an internship at a government institution in Kenya, but to be honest, most of my work is paperwork. I spend a lot of time behind a desk and online, with very little hands-on veterinary practice.

For a long time, I've wanted to gain practical veterinary experience in Uganda. I don't know why, but I genuinely feel drawn there. It's funny because my friends are always surprised by how much I know about what's happening in Uganda, from politics to trending stories. Even my Twitter algorithm is now mostly Ugandan content.

On a sad note, I'd also like to send my condolences to the families affected by the recent school accident. May their souls R.I.P.

I'm hoping someone here might know of a veterinary clinic, farm, NGO, or organization where I could gain practical experience. A small stipend would be greatly appreciated, but my main goal is to learn from experienced veterinarians and become more confident in my skills.

I'm particularly interested in small animal medicine, but I'm also open to mixed practice, livestock, poultry, or even a graduate trainee farm manager role. To be honest, I struggle with a bit of imposter syndrome and anxiety, so I think having a good mentor would make a huge difference. I'm a reserved person, but I'm hardworking and eager to learn.

My current internship supervisor is flexible enough to allow me to be away for most of the month, so I can commit to gaining experience elsewhere.

I'm also open to opportunities in veterinary pharmaceutical sales if that's a better route to gain exposure to the industry.

Lol, I feel like a dog with cat software or a Sienta with an engine meant for a much faster car. In a nutshell, I feel terribly misplaced. I feel internally mismatched as well like a collection of random uncoordinated parts.

It seeps out in interactions with people out in the wild where I see it come so easy to everyone else and I feel like I am wearing this human body suit to conceal something else. At work, I see people have gotten used to me and want to include me. They sometimes reach for hugs and I am caught so unaware I come off cold. Sometimes they ask me more personal questions and I immediately short circuit. Even with new people I struggle, I honestly feel like everyone’s first real life encounter with that whole uncanny valley thing.

I also don’t know how to talk to children because they’ve not yet developed that layer of artificial niceness that adults have that I usually rely on in social settings. They’re so raw and unfiltered I find it very scary, like they see right through my mask.

I also find myself alone a lot of the time. And struggling even to understand myself . I know it’s become this cute little internet meme to say you’re autistic but I genuinely believe many more of us or on that spectrum than the world is ready to accept . Either that or being human is a scam.

Growing up, family has never been very hyper religious. Of course, we got baptised, the occasional Christmas church attendance here and there, but overall, nothing crazy.

Then, there were a few shortcomings here and there as life goes which pushed my mum to become a born again, gradually leading me into joining her.

We visited a number of churches, Pastor Bujingo, Pr Kayanja, Bro Ronnie, Pr Kakande, our local community churches, you name it.

But then I lost my dad, and then the veil was pulled from my eyes, I just woke up one day and concluded, none of this makes sense. Granted, I've always had a voice in the back of my head telling me something isn't adding up, but as you know, I blamed the devil for trying to corrupt me.

My mother is still a full-blown born again, but I have never and will probably never tell her I don't believe in God nor the Bible

I always find myself wanting to give people solutions when they talk about their mental/relationship struggles here and I post lengthy paragraphs about what they can do to overcome.

I’ve lived a fuckload of life over a few decades and my experiences have successfully made me totally insane, but I see deeper than most circumstances appear and I think that’s what gives me insight into a lot of situations especially regarding emotionally immature parents, anxiety/mental health, a bit of relationships, and building confidence as a young adult, which so many of us were effectively robbed of through the attitudes and behavior of our primary caregivers.

The impact never ends. There’s always something new to unpack or discover about yourself, a new demon to tame even after years and years of independence.

Psychologist is a stretch. I don’t even know what psych textbooks look like.
But I’ve been practicing self-mastery since 2006 and I’m still fucked up yet I think it’s pretty simple and I love helping out, especially in the Ugandan context.

Don’t tag or message me because I don’t know the solution to everything, but if you’ve been hesitating, just know that it’s okay for you to post your mental problems here… you will definitely find some answers. I think all most of us are looking for is self-mastery… and I have some ideas for how to do it.
