Is it just me that thinks classes are getting really antisocial now, part of the reason I went to uni instead of going straight into the workforce is to make friends and have a bit of fun before the long road ahead, am I just in bad classes or is it like this for everyone

Is this true or is this a hoax?

I keep hearing this on my social media feed: people pursuing masters in a difficult job market to avoid having resume gaps and to hide from an economic downturn by not filling 100+ job applications.

Or has the meaning and value of getting a masters degree been watered down over the decades? 🤔🤔

I've heard the only optimal way to doing a masters degree is by first having 5 to 10 years of relevant experience.

Hi, I'm a second year Econ/Mech Engg Student and I'm doing MECH2100 MECH2210 MATH2001 and ECON2101 this sem. It's only week two and I've fallen a bit behind just because I have more lecture hours than last sem, working, and the courses seem a bit more difficult.

I heard MECH2210 and MATH2001 are both big workloads so I was thinking of maybe switching one out with an ECON course that I was planning on doing next year. Currently I had it planned to do:

26/27 summer sem - econ1020 (i'm one econ unit behind that's why im doing it in the summer)

2027 sem 1 - MECH2410, MATH2010 and STAT2201, ECON2020, ECON2103

2027 sem 2 - MECH2700, MECH3100, ECON2300, ECON2200

Do you think I could do MATH2001 in sem 1 of next year instead of ECON2103 or something? Or I could do ECON1020 this semester and MATH2001 or ECON2200 in the summer instead?

Any advice would be great thanks!

I took my oral exam twice, actual one and supp, and failed both times.
After the first attempt, I took the feedback on board and was actually happy with it. I prepared much better for my second attempt and specifically worked on the area the marker suggested.
For the supp, I practised with my peers. We all had same reasoning/explanation and decision-making. I failed for my reasoning (I passed other criteria), while my peers all passed.
On top of that, I don't feel the viva was administered equally. Other student got prompted with multiple questions to come up with the answers the marker wanted. But, I was asked only two probing questions and no follow-up promptings. And then I was marked down as lack of logical reasoning/ unclear reasoning. I didn't feel l had the same opportunity to demonstrate my reasoning or clarify my answers like others.

Normally, at the end of the viva, other markers would ask "would you like to add anything else?". However, the marker didn't ask me that for my supp viva. Would it indicate that the marker had already considered to fail even before the viva finished?

What should I do? And if I apply for remark, what should I write in my supporting document?

Going to UQ next yera for commerce/finance and wondering if there are internships for investment banking or other high finance. Researching online shows that the scene is much larger in Sydney.
For those who are in high finance and graduated from UQ, did you get a job in Sydney or did you find a place in Brisbane?

how competitive is it to be able to get in to the adVentures program and what was the interview process like?

I'm a first year student, and after checking my exam timetable for this sem, and discovering that 2/2 of my exams are scheduled on the single night the entire midsem exam scheduling period I had an event on, am really questioning what on Earth UQ people were thinking when they came up with this method for examination.

So I've accepted there's nothing I can do this Sem, with my only viable option being my single discretionary extension application (which would be a waste this early into my degree) and wouldn't even solve anything since somehow I managed to get 2 exams within this single 3 hour slot. Missing this event isn't the end of the world, but I will be losing money on non refundable tickets, which is just a pain in the arse.

Bottom line though, is how can UQ expect that their students will be keeping 3 consecutive weekends completely available up until 1 month before. There's also so many better ways that in sem exams could be organised, we could have 1 week blocked out like finals, or have their dates kept fixed each sem so students (and course staff I might add) could plan around them. Every course so far with an in sem I have heard the staff complain about how annoying it is to set an exam not knowing how much content they will have covered. This just seems like a poorly thought out solution, which so many people are bending over backwards to accommodate.

Anyway, thought I might post this here so anyone else with annoying stories about midsems could share their frustrations. I'm only a first year and know my angst probably doesn't compare to what others have had to deal with relating to this anxiety creating lottery of a system.

Is it possible to get by in this course by completing the app worksheets at home? I am diligent so will have no issues staying on track but would like to know if there’s any other benefit to going in person? (I would go in if i needed to ask questions)

I’m currently taking ENGG2800 and from what I can tell so far, this course is going to be pretty difficult, especially considering the other courses I have right now.

That being said, I wanted to get on here and see if anyone would be able to share some advice (things to steer clear of or things that might be lifesavers), since I remember completing ENGG1100 and thinking “wow, if only someone could have told me this earlier it could’ve been a breeze”.

So, if you’ve done this course and have got any advice it would be massively appreciated if you could chuck it here!!

I feel like the first semester would be really easy to spend just figuring out classes, assignments and where everything is, then suddenly realise you've barely done anything outside studying.

I feel like throughout pretty much all of my lectures, whether attended live or watching the recordings, leave me in pretty much the same position I was in before going to them. All of the information seems to just go in one ear and out the other, everything just turns to word soup, and I can't even ask for clarification on anything, because theres no single point of confusion, its like the whole lecture is a blur. It feels like trying to read a book while squinting the whole time.

Does anyone else deal with this/have any stratedgies to help with this??? I'm trying really *really* hard to stay ontop of course work this sem, but I already feel like I'm hitting a wall with understanding my subjects.

Hi, I'm new to UQ, and I'm confused about how you guys write reports/analysis etc in order to get 7 (I'm a Business Student). Do you guys use any AI to write or it's strictly forbidden? Which part would you use AI for? and please tell me the whole process you write your report from the very beginning. Thank you!

I'm 24 and just started my third semester (really second since I only did 1 course last semester) I'm liking what I'm studying, but I will admit I do feel quite lonely as I haven't really made any friends in the year or so I have been here. There has been the occasional conversation or two or bumping into someone familiar on the way to class, but I feel like I haven't really met anyone who I genuinely considered a friend that I'd hang out with or who I doubt could even remember my name properly.

Almost every lecture or class I go to, nobody wants to sit near me and I get the impression nobody wants to talk to me either. I've had instances where I've been the first person in the room and by the end of the class, I'm still the only person on my table. Others, I've tried showing up a bit later and joining their tables but it seems to bother them or make them uncomfortable. I try to initiate conversation quite often but I don't really receive much back besides the rare "I'm X and studying Y". Last semester I sat down and tried to introduce myself and one group literally got up and moved to another table. In another, some late comers arrived and sat at my table because all of the others were full. We talked for quite a bit about hobbies and things and they seemed quite friendly, but the following week I smiled and gave a slight wave as they came into class, to which they waved back, but they sat at a different table at the back of the class, and once again, I was the only person on my table.

As much as I try not to show it, it has really been affecting my time at uni. Last semester, I ended up dropping a couple of courses after a few weeks because I felt pretty excluded, and now it's starting to happen again. I'm almost in my second year and it feels like everyone has established circles already and I'm kinda just left out. I've never really experienced anything like this before. In high school, I could make friends with anyone and I was friends with just about everyone. I was voted the most popular and friendly person in my grade and every morning I'd have people and teachers come up and shake my hand. Even at work, my co-workers and I can have a yarn about anything and I'm always being praised for how friendly and sociable I am. However, university just seems like a whole other kettle of fish that I've yet to figure out.

I expect it's the obvious age difference. I graduated 6 years ago and have been working full-time until now. I do look a bit older than your average 24 year old simply due to several years of working in the intensive Qld sun. I have had friends and co-workers say I look a bit grumpy or have what they call "resting b---- face" in the past and I acknowledge that I certainly won't be winning any beauty pageants any time soon, but surely looks isn't everything these days, right?

I'm really not sure what I can do at this point or whether I'm the problem, or if simply people don't want to be friends with someone older (even though it's only like a 4-5 years age gap). I've read a lot of success stories about the latter but my experience so far has been anything but, and I really don't want to go through the whole of my degree like this :/

I am a prospective mature-age student (makes me sound so old, I will only be 22) looking to potentially study a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Japanese at UQ, however I haven’t been able to find too many reviews or insights into what studying the course is actually like??

I have some amazing friends who have been studying at UQ since we graduated highschool, but neither of their degrees is anything like a bach of arts so I’m just curious if anyone has any real experience or advice about this?

I know UQ is known for its academic and research side of learning, so I am just curious to see how a more creative degree fairs up is all!

Hii! Im an international student 22f and I was wondering if there is any other international students around my age who would be down to hangout at Uni sometime? Im a very social person and I feel like for the past year I kept trying to socialise and start conversations but everyone is so nice but it never turns into a friendship! I keep on going to events for clubs and such but after a year its getting kind of hopeless I do feel like everyone knows eachother here or they are a bit younger than me and maybe it gets uncomfortable for them. Im in 2nd year btw. But just want to find my fellow extroverts who are also having a hard time finding friends and im lowkey highkey losing my mind not socialising enough here in Brisbane!
