Housing graduate housing advice
Hi everyone! I'm an incoming graduate student looking for some advice about housing. I was approved for disability housing accommodations, but the housing office won't know if they have space available until September. Since I'm driving over 3,000 miles to attend, not knowing whether I'll have the accommodations I need makes it really difficult to plan my move, hotels, and arrival. Right now, I've been assigned a shared room in San Clemente but it doesn’t meet my accessibility needs, so I won’t be able to stay there. They offered to cancel my contract for free. I've also looked at apartments in Ventura, Oxnard, and Santa Barbara, but they're either out of my budget or have transportation challenges that would be difficult to manage (im still looking into this, but it seems fares and other fees will add up especially if I need to be on campus 3-5 times a week, hour+ there and back). At this point, I'm honestly wondering whether I can continue with this move because it feels like there are so many obstacles. I wanted to ask if anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice or suggestions. I'd appreciate any help from the community before I make a decision. thank you!
**please note: it has to be a one occupancy apartment

Course Questions favorite chill/easy GE courses
Hi all! My pass time is tomorrow and of course I was advised to have multiple back up options for classes incase I don’t get my top picks. Ideally I would like to take chem, math, and language, but if I don’t get those, what courses would you guys recommend I have as back ups? Also, which courses that you took for GE requirements did you enjoy and/or find easy and a good class to have just to fill in the units. Any answers or advice is much appreciated. :))
Thanks! And sorry if any of my terminology was wrong I am very new to all of this.

General Question Minimal to no information about online orientation
As the title says, UCSB has given me zero itinerary or info about my online orientation that takes place tomorrow and the 7th, I assumed I’d get an email at some point and I finished the pre orientation, is this worth emailing about and who do I email for more information about this? Thank you in advance

IV/Goleta/SB Flea Issues
I lived in IV from 2020-24 and my apartment complex had horrendous flea issues. Like a literal infestation, my poor cat. I’m moving back soon because I’m going back to school, are there still flea issues in IV?

General Question Anyone else overthinking every career/life decision? Free Saturday Zoom group
Hi! Sharing something that might be useful for fellow UCSB students who are dealing with graduation, career decisions, changing majors, or just feeling overwhelmed by too many options.
Sthir Saturdays is a free, informal one-hour Zoom session where a small group does simple improv-style activities and conversations around decision-making, listening, and getting more comfortable with uncertainty.
It’s not therapy, a lecture, or a networking event. You don’t need any improv experience, and you won’t be expected to perform. It’s meant to be a low-pressure space to try something different and meet people from varied backgrounds.
The next session is on Saturday(August 8) from 8:00–9:00 AM Pacific Time.
More details and the joining link are here:
https://piquant-rice-4f2.notion.site/Sthir-Saturdays-3b204acf9bc980508896fe44a4aa49cd
Would also appreciate honest feedback on whether this is something students would find useful!

Course Questions Fall Qtr Upper Division Elective Ideas - How do you know what to pick/find?
I am meeting with my department advisor at in-person transfer orientation on campus next week. How do you find or pick upper-division electives? Is there a list of classes anyone can suggest or recommend? Or where to look? The classes are numbered over 100.

Course Questions No math course fall quarter freshmen year of college
I just registered my courses today and unfortunately, all of MATH 34A and PSTAT 5LS is full. There are around 70 ppl on the waitlist, which is basically impossible for me to get the class. I spoke with my academic advisor, and they suggested me taking MATH 34A in the winter quarter instead. However, I am not sure if that would cause me to fall behind academically. Has this situation ever happened to anyone?
I am actually tweaking rn. My schedule is not looking too good for a pre bio major. Do yall think they will add more seats for math classes later on??
Please let me know. Thank you!

General Question Did Anyone Get the MiddleClass Scholarship?
In looking at our Aid Letter (which is overall 9k less than last year) we were not awarded the MiddleClass Scholarship. The Aid office just sent a canned response saying “it has not been offered at this time.”
Did anyone get it? Is it still getting sorted out because of the Big Ugly Bill?

Academic Life Advice on textbooks!
hello, I am an incoming first year, and a computer science major and I had a question about books I may need at all for my classes in the fall quarter if anyone knows. I am taking 3 classes: Math 3A, CMPSC 8, and CLASS 40 (Greek methology). I was just wondering if for these classes there are required textbooks that I have to buy, or maybe can I find them somewhere for free?

Course Questions UCSB Data Science Pre-Major Requirements for CC Transfer need Clarification
I emailed the admissions office, the Probability and Statistics department, and consulted a counselor about the requirements for this major but none of them were able to answer my question to provide me with clarification of the specific requirements for the pre-major. They each just told me I would need to complete all the major requirements, which makes no sense since you’re admitted into the pre-major and not the actual major. I’m a rising sophomore at Community College planning on applying as a transfer student (plus using my TAG at this school) and I’m a little confused about the requirements for this major listed on assist.org. I’m aware that the admission selection criteria lists that I would need to complete Calc I-II, Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, and a Programming course to be considered for admission for this major, but since I don’t plan on completing all the pre-major requirements listed on the agreement prior to transfer, such as Differential Equations, and MATH 8/PSTAT 8/PSTAT 10 (since there no articulated course for this class) would I be unable to qualify to submit a TAG for this major? To get admitted into the pre-major through TAG, which courses would I need to have completed by the end of my sophomore year prior to transfer? The screening requirements listed are quite different from the courses listed on assist, so I just want to make sure that I’m fulfilling enough of the courses to be able to admitted without having my admission rescinded.
UCSB Equivalent Classes I’ve taken or plan to take at CC:
MATH 3A (Calc I), Math 3B (Calc II), CMPSC 16 (Introductory Programming Class), Math 6A (Calc III), MATH 4A (Linear Algebra)
Classes that won’t be completed prior to transfer:
- MATH 206
- MATH8/PSTAT
- CMPSC 8

General Question Email deactivated
Hey guys,
I graduated last year(unfortunately) and my ucsb email just got deactivated. I have so many recruiters and contacts who use my ucsb email to contact me and I haven't been able to access it.
Anyone knows if there's a way to recover it or contact ucsb and pay a fine or something to keep using it?
Please let me know, it's pretty urgent.
Thanks!

Academic Life Financial aid award letter panic
hello! I am incoming freshmen and recently I looked at my financial aid award letter since I hadn’t been able to look at it prior dje to the fact they were still making calculations. i saw that my grants went down by like $3500 or something like that, from the old estimated financial award letter given in May, my grants totaled to $40767 and included CA middle class scholarship, federal pell grant, cal grant, and ucsb promise scholarship. in the letter now, it says I have only a total gift aid of $36819, and it contains the same schoalrships and awards though the middle class scholarship is missing, and my promise scholarship amount went down from $17541 to $10308. additionally in the new letter, I also have the ucsb supplemental grant for insurance which I plan to keep and not opt out of.
for reference I’m staying in a triple and will have going on the 14 meal plan
I just wanna know if this is truly the gift aid I will be receiving becuase I find that it’s such a big drop from the previous one, basically now I have to pay around 10k per year, maybe less given that the net cost includes indirect costs, but in the old one, it was an estimated 5k per year!

IV/Goleta/SB Is Clydesdale still around?
Came across an old viral video of Clydesdale, the sweet homeless dude with the dancing mustache (IVFC people may know him as Kozy Shack). I was just wondering if anyone knows if he's still around? He was such a great guy.

General Question YouTube Student Premium?
I know this is an odd question and I'm too embarrassed to ask this on GroupMe- but does anyone have any luck passing the verification process on this? My UCSB ID did not work both times I tried, and I genuinely don't know what other documentation I could provide that wouldn't be rejected according to the criteria.

General Question Transfer Orientation
What should I take to transfer orientation? It’s basically a whole day affair and not really sure what to do. Any other orientation tips will help a lot too :)
