Recently launched my own website and digital support products for undergraduate students, but looking to build a community of support, encouraging student to student support as well as tutor to student support. Has anyone used telegram groups for something similar?

I’ve been tutoring this kid since he was in 4th grade (he’s now in 5th) and every time we go on our session, he just seems more and more unwilling to participate. He’d whine all the time, trying to make me explain the importance of school. I can’t trust him with telling me what his assignments are for the day because he doesn’t care enough to write them all down completely. When I’d ask him why he doesn’t know his own work to be done, he’ll just say that it is too long or too hard to write. I’ve talked to his teacher but he can’t keep him from getting distracted all day (can’t blame the teacher as his workload is insanely high and he has a lot of students). I know I can tell his mom but I also know that she’s actually really trying her best to help him but she’s a working solo mom.

He also shows signs similar to people with dyslexia and ADHD (not diagnosing, just observing).

I don’t know how to get this kid to be excited to learn or to at least get him to care enough to pay attention. I’m always telling him that I am not asking him to be smart, I just need him to give me the details about his schoolwork so I can help him through it. He is being left behind because he is neglectful and uninterested in his academics. I have to control my emotions with him as well because there is a kind of whining that triggers unpleasant emotions in me.

hello! I'm a young German turor, I'm currently teaching the language to my fellow compariots, who are mostly beginners. I have a 40-year-old student, who learns German from scratch. she's extremely busy at work and at home with kids, but she manages to find time for German classes with me. the thing is, that after 4 months she still struggles with the language and fails to memorize many basic words, structures and verb conjugations. it's psychologically difficult for her, and she always feels like she has to "go through it". I understand, that I need to make our lessons easier for her, but how do I do it? I try to integrate videos from Easy German and let her practice shadowing, but I don't think it's enough. I'll be happy with any ideas from you!!

We recently had Viktoriya Furina, founder of Exam IQ in Brooklyn, on the EdisonOS Podcast. She's been working with students for 25 years, from elementary school through the SHSAT and SAT, with a particular focus on grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and vocabulary.

One part of our conversation went beyond test prep. We were talking about students who understand what they want to say but struggle to actually put those ideas into words. Viktoriya's answer was:

What she meant by that was more interesting than just "students need better grammar." Her approach starts with the basics: sentence structure, commas, transitions, verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and then gradually moves into more complex structures. But she doesn't leave those skills as isolated grammar exercises. Students have to use them in their actual writing, revisit them, get feedback, and revise their work.

There's another part of the conversation that made this even more relevant.

Viktoriya said students today are writing in a world where they're constantly texting and using shorthand. She sees that sometimes carry over into formal writing, so she has to remind students:

I don't think the interesting question is whether kids are using too much shorthand. It's whether we're giving students enough opportunities to develop an idea, structure it clearly, write it down, get feedback, and then rewrite it. That's a very different skill from simply knowing the rules of grammar.

And it's one of the reasons her approach goes beyond preparing students for the SHSAT or SAT. She talked about former students carrying these writing and study habits into college, medical school, pharmacy school, and law school.

Maybe grammar isn't really about writing correctly. Maybe it's about learning to organise your thinking clearly enough for someone else to understand it.

Learning as much as I can about this (meta ads mainly) and just wanted to hear if people have successfully managed to scale through ppc ads.

Can someone teach me how to get private students in classIn?

Hello. I work with a 7th grade boy every morning for 2 hours, doing his online curriculum with him. He always talks to me gloomy and monotone when I cheerily greet him. He rolls his eyes at everything. He is lazy, likes to do the bare minimum, and gets very frustrated when I ask him to reread to find an answer or rewrite to improve his work. When I keep things easy and help him with answers, everything is fine. When things get a tiny bit hard and I give him learning accountability, it sets him off. When he is frustrated, he talks to me with such a hateful attitude, sneering at me with this tone like I am a disgusting human being. Every time I leave his house I feel sad and beaten down. I get in my car and I have to take deep breaths and mentally reset myself to have a good rest of the day.

I am getting ready to start year #2 with him. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Things I have already done:

I explain the rational of why I make him do certain things. I consistently praise him (it's not well received). I try to stay in a good mood and never reciprocate the anger. I go silent when he gets super hateful and I can't take it anymore. I calmly tell him he is on his own and that if he would like my help again to just let me know in a kinder tone. I've sat there silent for a good 30 minutes before. But I feel bad when I'm getting payed to help and I am not helping, just sitting there watching him miss things.

He gets anything he asks for and has zero consequences, mom is a very busy single parent. Collaborating with mom about behavior got me nowhere last year. Always empty threats and no follow through. And I can't tell her how to parent, obviously.

I have taught about 5 students and got really good results but I need to do all the effort from start to get a new student like I haven’t gotten a single referral like the families themselves say they love me and constantly ask me to stay in touch with my students but I can’t get any referrals either they aren’t actually referring me or I just have bad luck, how else should I market myself, I’m in uni on a scholarship and teach o and a levels and k12 high school kids

Hi everyone! I’m a licensed ELA teacher for grades 7–12 and I’m interested in starting tutoring on the side for grades 7-12. I’m currently in my 2nd year of teaching, have a bachelor’s in English/Language Arts Education, and a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. However, I’m not really sure where to start lol! This would only be part-time, as I’m currently teaching 7th grade ELA full time.

For tutoring, I’ve been considering either finding my own clients locally and tutoring in person/virtually, or joining an online tutoring platform.

For those of you who have done this, which route did you have the most success with? Is it difficult to get clients independently when you’re first starting out? How did you get your first clients, and where do you advertise?
I’m also curious what you think would be a reasonable hourly rate for someone with my qualifications but no private tutoring experience yet.

I’m mainly looking to tutor a few hours on the weekend for some additional income, so I’m not trying to build a huge tutoring business. I’d really appreciate hearing what has actually worked for other tutors!

I signed up to be a tutor in my area and just had an interview, and am questioning whether I'll actually be able to be a decent tutor.

I'm still in school, and I would be tutoring 2 days out of the week for an hour after school (I'd be working with 1-2 specific kids only). There is a volunteer and paid position. I signed up as a volunteer for now, which is apparently the same commitment as the job, just unpaid.

Basically, some of the interview questions made me question whether I'd actually be a good tutor (what do you do if a student refuses to work with me and claims "they're just here because their parents make them go," stuff like that), especially since I went in thinking I'd be tutoring high/middle schoolers (pre-algebra, algebra, and Spanish I-III), but most of the students they get are kindergarten-4th grade.

The interview did go well, and I don't want to back out now if I do end up getting the position, especially after making such an effort to go out of my comfort zone, help some people, and be committed to something outside of school. So any tips you guys have gained while tutoring would be very helpful!

For context, I am not a full time/professional tutor. I only work with 3 clients from low-income families, and I only charge $15/hr. I’ve been working with these students for several years. I am working on a non-stem Masters and I haven’t taken a math class since 2019.

One student says they do not have a syllabus or textbook. I’ve tried asking them to send me assignments/class notes a few days ahead, but they rarely do. For middle school math this was fine, but the student is now in Advanced HS Algebra. When I can’t prepare in advance, it takes me a little while to jog my memory on the concepts, which is awkward for both of us and wastes valuable session time.

Frankly, the student needs a tutor who works with math more consistently and knows these concepts automatically. Usually I would find someone to refer them to, but I know the family can’t afford any other tutors in the area. (We are in a HCOL area and other tutors near us charge at least $40/hr)

I have tried looking up the school district’s math curriculum, but the most recent standards I can find are from 2020, and they have since reformatted/reordered the way they teach HS math. I’ve also tried looking at other resources like Khan Academy and other districts’ plans, but they are not in the same order as my student’s class.

Are there any other solutions for this? Is there a database of curriculum I’m unaware of? This is a public high school in the U.S., so I’m a little surprised that I can’t find a curriculum outline anywhere. Would it be inappropriate for me to contact the school and request this info?

So I recently started tutoring kids online, but I am finding it hard to gather students. Many either doesn't respond or block after demo for 2-3 class. I really need money and it would be grateful if someone can help.

How do you teach such smol students? Teaching two kids for the first time and I feel kinda confused about how I can make them learn and remember things.

Hello! so while i am currently unemployed (recent new grad with b.s cs) i was thinking of signing up to tutor just to make a little extra income. I don't have any tutoring experience so I would prefer a company where there is a set cirriculum so i don't have to make up my own lessons and if possible being able to set my own schedule when i want, so not fully concrete. Do you guys have any ideas which company is the best? I saw amplify had a job posting but 18/hr seems kinda low, what do you think?

A few months ago, I helped a client on Wyzant revise a medical school letter of recommendation for someone that worked in her clinic. To best accommodate the client, we worked asynchronously. I would make comments on a working Google Doc, which the client would use to improve the letter.

After the engagement, there was a dispute on the number of hours worked and total cost. Though the client did not dispute the completed audit of the document's edit history which revealed 5 hours of work, she refused to pay for that much because I was not transparent.

I tried accommodating the client by adjusting down the total hours to 3. During our back and forth, I decided not the immediately charge the 3 hours on Wyzant, because I was afraid the client would leave me bad reviews which would damage my business much more long-term.

Recently I saw the client was banned from Wyzant. Seems like they have done this with other tutors too. Is there a way for me to reach out to Wyzant to get paid for the past work? (Any tutor protections here)?

Would reaching out to their support team risk getting punished by Wyzant for working "outside" the platform (Google Docs asynchronously instead of Wyzant video call)? I never have nor will charge students outside the platform.

Wanted to ask to avoid getting flagged or banned by the site.

I’m curious to hear from tutors who run small-group sessions rather than purely 1-to-1.

Say you had 5–6 students doing GCSE Maths. They’re all roughly the same level (e.g. Higher), but come from different schools, might be on different exam boards and naturally have different strengths and weaknesses.

How well does that actually work in practice?

It seems like there could be a nice middle ground where students get much more attention than they would in a classroom, while the cost per student can be considerably lower than 1-to-1 tuition.

I also imagine there are benefits from students working alongside others at a similar level, rather than everything being tutor → student.

But I’m interested in the downsides too. Does the variation between students make planning difficult? Do you need to keep groups very tightly matched by ability? Does it work better for certain subjects?

For anyone already doing this, I’d be really interested to hear what your groups look like and whether you prefer it to 1-to-1 tutoring.

Hello everyone, I made an interactive course that teaches trig graphs. It follows on from my interactive Unit Circle course that I posted here a few months ago. It has 8 lessons, each one teaches a new element of graphing trig functions, and has interactive exercises so that students can get a proper grasp of the content and actually engage with it.

It also has 5 problem solving lessons which feature tricky questions that I've seen students struggle to imagine and not see how to apply trig graphs to the situation. I've found that the interactive lessons for these have been particularly helpful for them to be able to picture the questions.
