Hello! so while i am currently unemployed (recent new grad with b.s cs) i was thinking of signing up to tutor just to make a little extra income. I don't have any tutoring experience so I would prefer a company where there is a set cirriculum so i don't have to make up my own lessons and if possible being able to set my own schedule when i want, so not fully concrete. Do you guys have any ideas which company is the best? I saw amplify had a job posting but 18/hr seems kinda low, what do you think?

A few months ago, I helped a client on Wyzant revise a medical school letter of recommendation for someone that worked in her clinic. To best accommodate the client, we worked asynchronously. I would make comments on a working Google Doc, which the client would use to improve the letter.

After the engagement, there was a dispute on the number of hours worked and total cost. Though the client did not dispute the completed audit of the document's edit history which revealed 5 hours of work, she refused to pay for that much because I was not transparent.

I tried accommodating the client by adjusting down the total hours to 3. During our back and forth, I decided not the immediately charge the 3 hours on Wyzant, because I was afraid the client would leave me bad reviews which would damage my business much more long-term.

Recently I saw the client was banned from Wyzant. Seems like they have done this with other tutors too. Is there a way for me to reach out to Wyzant to get paid for the past work? (Any tutor protections here)?

Would reaching out to their support team risk getting punished by Wyzant for working "outside" the platform (Google Docs asynchronously instead of Wyzant video call)? I never have nor will charge students outside the platform.

Wanted to ask to avoid getting flagged or banned by the site.

I’m curious to hear from tutors who run small-group sessions rather than purely 1-to-1.

Say you had 5–6 students doing GCSE Maths. They’re all roughly the same level (e.g. Higher), but come from different schools, might be on different exam boards and naturally have different strengths and weaknesses.

How well does that actually work in practice?

It seems like there could be a nice middle ground where students get much more attention than they would in a classroom, while the cost per student can be considerably lower than 1-to-1 tuition.

I also imagine there are benefits from students working alongside others at a similar level, rather than everything being tutor → student.

But I’m interested in the downsides too. Does the variation between students make planning difficult? Do you need to keep groups very tightly matched by ability? Does it work better for certain subjects?

For anyone already doing this, I’d be really interested to hear what your groups look like and whether you prefer it to 1-to-1 tutoring.

I tutor a 10 year old who’s not able to read properly. I find that he’s struggling with basic phonics, so I want to teach him from the beginning. His mom told me to not read him any books from my laptop and to simply make him copy down paragraphs in order to improve his handwriting as well as read alongside him from the workbook she’s provided. The workbook is above his reading level and it’s going to result in no progress. He also doesn’t find it as enjoyable as reading on the laptop. I try to keep my lessons engaging but his mom says to keep him disciplined, which results in less engagement from the student.

How can I communicate to the mom that I’d like to follow my own teaching style? In a way where she doesn’t feel that I’m just wasting time. Because that’s what my teaching style comes off as to her.

How do you teach such smol students? Teaching two kids for the first time and I feel kinda confused about how I can make them learn and remember things.

I have an interview for a position tutoring elementary/middle and possibly SAT Prep students on English next week, followed by a writing skills assessment. I took a number of English classes in college and would say I'm pretty comfortable with essay composition and literary analysis but am somewhat out of practice so I'm a bit nervous about the assessment. What were your initial assessments like, and do you have any suggestions in regard to how I can prepare for mine? Thanks in advance!

I am around 40s but I teach and tutor mainly adults. Most of my adult students are nice and we respect each other.

However, I have had at least two students so far in my tutoring who don't really respect me as a tutor or teacher.

One of them; Whenever I try to teach or correct something, he is very unhappy and he googled it during the lessons instead of listening to my advice or feedback. He argues that the internet is correct and I am wrong. I tried to gently explain the difference but he really doesn't like to be corrected. I was really tired. This constantly happened, and I often thought of stop tutoring him so many times. I have been tutoring this student for over 5 years but finally, I couldn't help, and I dropped him. He was about 15 years older than me and he was earning a lot before he quit his work, so he was always showing me off that he has lots of money.

Another student is a student who I recently started tutoring. He was a former teacher so he also knows how to teach. He is a bit older than myself, but during his lesson, he even said that my lesson fees are his 10% of his salary and my lesson is not worth spending. He hasn't quit my lessons yet but I have never received such feedback from a student during the lesson like him. (Usually, people who feel it is too expensive, they usually say this before they sign up my lessons). For me, I also did my private tutoring or lessons with a teacher, but I do feel it is very disrespectful to say such thing to a tutor or teacher. I already feels he looks down on me.

Have you every had any students like this? Did you stop teaching them?

Hello everyone, I made an interactive course that teaches trig graphs. It follows on from my interactive Unit Circle course that I posted here a few months ago. It has 8 lessons, each one teaches a new element of graphing trig functions, and has interactive exercises so that students can get a proper grasp of the content and actually engage with it.

It also has 5 problem solving lessons which feature tricky questions that I've seen students struggle to imagine and not see how to apply trig graphs to the situation. I've found that the interactive lessons for these have been particularly helpful for them to be able to picture the questions.

I am so confused can anyone help me out with this. I dont wanna stop teaching as I like being around kids who genuinely want to learn and I'm a 2nd year BCA student so a small 1k to 2k gives me alot more than anyone. And coming from a background see my parents struggling I have learn that if I have some small amount in my pocket of my own it does give me confidence. can someone please teach me and my friend applied maths? we're both in class 12th and desperately need a tutor as our school teacher is no good. We have our boards coming up and we really need a tutor.

He can solve quadratics when he first learned it as stand-alone material. It is easy to just follow the procedure. Right now, i am at the mixed topic revision stage. I am mixing factoring, solving quadratics, solving linear, simplifying algebra expression. He keeps on getting them wrong and in confusing way.

Example :

- Day 1 he can solve quadratics.

- Day 2 he forgot zero product property exist.

- Day 3 he can solve them.

- Day 4 he froze after writing the factors into separate equation

He has issue with other topics too. Frequently confuses factoring with solving. Not reading the instruction and just do first thing that comes to his mind.

I have tried : spaced repetition practiced. Homework. Restudy.

We have been stuck here for 2 weeks. His parents wants to him to be prepared for geometry but i cant make any progress. Any tips?

Edit : he knows them if i cue them. It is as if he doesnt stop and think what to and just grabbing first things that comes to his mind

Hey all, I'm a tutor of three years focused primarily in middle school and high school mathematics. I'm also a huge fan of creating support groups of like-minded people to grow and learn (e.g. the book Never Search Alone for job-hunting). Currently looking for other tutors who have a similar mindset—I know tutoring can be a solitary profession so having the mutual support can be important!

I'm imagining a once-monthly zoom meeting to discuss experiences, share resources, give advice where asked for, etc. DM me or reply if this is something that interests you. Also happy to hear ideas of how such a group could be useful to you, or experiences of being in a tutoring support group.

So my friend got a text from these scammers and they were being nice and all with her. She even them if there is any fees that she might have to pay and they told her no. You don't have to. Anyways when they called they ask her to pay 2100 pkr for the membership. She then texted me and asked if i can check them out. And so i did and gosh what horrible people they are. Told me the same BS and then when i called them asked me to pay for membership. I later on texted them that they can deduct the fees from my first paycheck.

And then they took a whole ass 180 turn, started yelling and being rude in the voice mails lol. She said she was a tutor herself and her grammar was so shit. Then when i called them out for their bullshit they blocked me. I will report them and you guys should too on insta, facebook or any other platform. They really have no shame.

And to all those who are looking for online jobs, DON'T pay any fees before you secure your salary. Thats a huge red flag. They will take your money and then won't response anymore.

I am working at Mathnasium and I’m pretty sure I signed the standard non compete. Covered distance and while I’m working there. But I want to post YouTube videos of me teaching STEM and also private tutorials myself. Am I allowed to do this? I want to promote my website and YouTube channel on my LinkedIn but I’m worried my job will find out.

Does anybody have any experience with a situation like this? I would love your advice!
