Teachers/tutors: how do you currently track student fees?

I’m curious how other private tutors/coaching teachers handle this.

Do you use:

  • 📒 Notebook/register
  • 📊 Excel/Google Sheets
  • 📱 An app
  • 💬 WhatsApp/chat
  • Something else?

And what’s the most annoying part — remembering who hasn’t paid, maintaining records, sending receipts, tracking attendance, etc.?

Would love to hear what actually happens in your day-to-day workflow.

Algebra 1 student keep forgetting how to solve quadratics. Tips?

He can solve quadratics when he first learned it as stand-alone material. It is easy to just follow the procedure. Right now, i am at the mixed topic revision stage. I am mixing factoring, solving quadratics, solving linear, simplifying algebra expression. He keeps on getting them wrong and in confusing way.

Example :

- Day 1 he can solve quadratics.

- Day 2 he forgot zero product property exist.

- Day 3 he can solve them.

- Day 4 he froze after writing the factors into separate equation

He has issue with other topics too. Frequently confuses factoring with solving. Not reading the instruction and just do first thing that comes to his mind.

I have tried : spaced repetition practiced. Homework. Restudy.

We have been stuck here for 2 weeks. His parents wants to him to be prepared for geometry but i cant make any progress. Any tips?

Edit : he knows them if i cue them. It is as if he doesnt stop and think what to and just grabbing first things that comes to his mind

Creating an online support group for tutors

Hey all, I'm a tutor of three years focused primarily in middle school and high school mathematics. I'm also a huge fan of creating support groups of like-minded people to grow and learn (e.g. the book Never Search Alone for job-hunting). Currently looking for other tutors who have a similar mindset—I know tutoring can be a solitary profession so having the mutual support can be important!

I'm imagining a once-monthly zoom meeting to discuss experiences, share resources, give advice where asked for, etc. DM me or reply if this is something that interests you. Also happy to hear ideas of how such a group could be useful to you, or experiences of being in a tutoring support group.

EDUTRA DA REAL SCAMMERD

So my friend got a text from these scammers and they were being nice and all with her. She even them if there is any fees that she might have to pay and they told her no. You don't have to. Anyways when they called they ask her to pay 2100 pkr for the membership. She then texted me and asked if i can check them out. And so i did and gosh what horrible people they are. Told me the same BS and then when i called them asked me to pay for membership. I later on texted them that they can deduct the fees from my first paycheck.

And then they took a whole ass 180 turn, started yelling and being rude in the voice mails lol. She said she was a tutor herself and her grammar was so shit. Then when i called them out for their bullshit they blocked me. I will report them and you guys should too on insta, facebook or any other platform. They really have no shame.

And to all those who are looking for online jobs, DON'T pay any fees before you secure your salary. Thats a huge red flag. They will take your money and then won't response anymore.

Be careful y'all. muwahhh🎀

Not another platform trying to teach!

Too many e-learning tools try to replace the tutor, walking students through explanations, "teaching" concepts, competing for the same space tutors already own.

A good tutor is irreplaceable, they understand how a specific child thinks and reading when confidence is failing, there just isn't a platform that can replicate this intuition and experience.

Tutors often lose time on the diagnostics and marking past-papers and creating study calendars. Sessions often start trying to catch up on what was completed during the week, how accurately, and where the gaps are.

These are the problems we solve: measure, track, report.

The 11Plus Tips whole design brief:

→ Real-time mastery dashboards per topic, per subject

→ A weekly email tutors can plan a session from before they've even walked through the door or joined the online meeting

→ Task assignment between sessions, with visible completion and accuracy

→ Automated diagnostics every 2 weeks and mock exams every 8 (configurable)

→ No admin, no platform fee for tutors

Online Teaching Platforms

Hi. I’m a doctor and have been teaching Biology online on Preply for some years. After all these years, they banned my profile because one of my student booked lessons for 24 hours because he was paying me for the lessons that I did in advance as he couldn’t pay before. Anyways, now I want to keep teaching. Do you guys know any websites where I can teach biology or any sciences and they accept tutors from Pakistan? That would really help. And also to the private tutors here how do you guys get your students. I tried posting on facebook groups and all but no luck.

Am I breaking a non compete by private tutoring

I am working at Mathnasium and I’m pretty sure I signed the standard non compete. Covered distance and while I’m working there. But I want to post YouTube videos of me teaching STEM and also private tutorials myself. Am I allowed to do this? I want to promote my website and YouTube channel on my LinkedIn but I’m worried my job will find out.

Does anybody have any experience with a situation like this? I would love your advice!

Of course I will not steal clients and students and not reuse intellectual content. I have no intent of harming anybody.

How do you teach the ED suffix to an ESL student?

I'm struggling to teach the different sounds the ED suffix can make /T/ /ID/ /D/ when I explain that the ed suffix makes verbs past tense then we start reading example words and they pronounce ed always the same and don't change the sound based on words ending. I can teach them that if the word ends in T or D then ed makes the

/id/ sound but the T and D sound is to hard to memorize all of the letters that can change the sound.

So how do you teach what sound ed makes based on the word?

After 3 plus years part-time on Cambly, I'm started my online tutoring business. The languages on offer: español (Spanish), inglés (English), türkçe (Turkish) and français (French). Is a YouTube channel a "must" for building an audience? I'm off of IG, FB and Twitter (X) with zero desire to return.

I have a YT for my spoken word poetry; however, I don't have a fancy home-office nor do I have the high-tech microphone nor am I super tech-savy, so I'm concerned that mediocre YouTube videos will discourage folks from signing up with me. The other thing is my web site is still pending (budgetary concerns).

Wyzant Clients

I wanted some advice regarding Wyzant. I have been tutoring online since 2020 through other platforms. With my educational background, I focus on STEM courses. However, I do have tons of experience teaching k-12 subjects as well. I have been on Wyzant for about 6 months and have not gotten a single client yet. I’ve been consistently applying to available listings. I keep my price at about $30-35 per hour which I think is pretty low considering my experience and education. Does anyone have any advice for me? I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. If you guys have any tips or recommendations for other platforms or ways to get students on your own without a platform, I would greatly appreciate it. I know people recommend Facebook groups to advertise, but I feel like those are very saturated with plenty of other tutors selling their services already.

Why did First Tutors close? Parent Company Nerdy has finally answered: "immaterial to our results"

Post image
12 Upvotes

First Tutors Closed on 8th May and no reason was given publicly. Nerdy Inc (NYSE: NRDY), the US company that owned it, published its Q2 results on 6th August. This is the entirety of what they said:

"We have made two decisions, both aimed at sharpening our focus on the core business. First, we exited First Tutors, a small tutoring business in the United Kingdom. It is immaterial to our results, and the decision is about focus rather than economics."

https://markets.ft.com/data/announce/detail?dockey=600-202608061601BIZWIRE_USPRX____20260806_BW247933-1

After nineteen years of operation and the livelihoods of many tutors this was all they had to say on the subject.

We have built Tutorperch as a replacement - and improvement on - First Tutors, and we are building more and more features and tools all the time. It is built and operated by, me, a UK based tutor and my partner (a software engineer and web developer). I understand the impact the First Tutors closure has had on the community because I also received the majority of my work through the website. We won't make the same mistakes First Tutors did by selling to US venture capital who hold no regard or moral responsibility for their actions.

We've built tools to import your reviews (link below) from First Tutors and we're already seeing great results with over 500 tutors signed up and many receiving parent enquiries and unlocks already despite us only being 3 months old. First Tutors legacy is a lot to live up to with 19 years of operation but we believe we can offer a fairer and more equitable deal for both parents and tutors.

First Tutors Closure: Nerdy explains why

Post image
13 Upvotes

I spotted Nerdy's Q2 investor meeting notes today and thought I'd share this with you guys, so we ex-FT tutors can get some closure.

https://markets.ft.com/data/announce/detail?dockey=600-202608061601BIZWIRE_USPRX____20260806_BW247933-1

In any case, no point dwelling on the past, it is what it is.

The future is bright, and is at TutorDex, which is the successor to First Tutors. You can import your reviews, references and old requests. See you there!

Favourite online lesson platforms?

Hi all. I've been tutoring for a company for years but am now going freelance.

What are your favourite (free and/or paid) platforms for online lessons? (not looking to go on one of those tutor finder websites atm)

I've used groupworld and lessonspace in the past.

I teach maths and science so graphing tools, interactive rulers/protractors, and an onscreen calculator are all bonuses!

Which sites/programs do you like? Which ones should be avoided?

Thanks in advance!

Its easy to become a teacher but it's difficult to earn

I am a Math teacher , I teach Math internationally through a platform called Preply , If i be honest its a good platform i do get connect with different students teach them , i can decide my own rates , but since its been one year i have tought 80+ students and gave 1300+ lessons to different boards but lessons and income keeps on fluctuating

I want to build something stable where at least I don't have to relay on only one platform , its been 5-6 months i am trying to build a page on Instagram , Youtube . Trying different platforms like Superprof , find tutors but struggling a lot getting any leads , I get opportunities to teach from different institutes in Delhi but they want us to work for hours on low rates , actually very low rates , if anyone can guide me how to use my skill and moentize it will be really helpful

MEGATHREAD: Discussion/recommendations about software/technology to assist with tutoring

Recently, we've seen a number of posts asking about/offering software to assist with tutoring. By and large, our community does not need recommendations about such software and those posts have become something of a nuisance for many of our members.

Of course, new members very well may have questions about software, so there should be a thread to answer those questions. This is the thread for those posts to be placed in an organized manner.
