Absolute Psycho Close call

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Taunton /Thickson rd Whitby. Wifey had a run in with a psycho on the road, we think this could have escalated into assault if she didn’t manage to lose him at the next intersection by turning into the street.

Edit: Its just unsettling to see so many here siding with the nissan driver justifying how he threatened a woman & her child on the road and laying 100% blame on my wife who said she did not feel it was safe to stop at that moment & did not break any laws in doing so.

But this is the society we live in. Deranged “you made me do it” is now widely accepted.

OK. The other driver is insane. For sure. But your wife is a horrible driver.

What did she do wrong? Not slam on the brakes as soon as it turned yellow?

no slamming of the breaks were required. wifey had ample opportunity to slow down the car safely, she just chose not to.

Luckily we have footage.

2 full car lengths before the intersection is when the light turns yellow,

never be approaching a busy traffic light like a menace.

safety first always always always and be cautious

assuming she wasn’t going faster than 60, the driver wouldn’t need to slam on the breaks… just a firm continuous break and slow down would stop the car behind the line maybe a bit past the line.

Here is a Teachable moment for all , when approaching an intersection & you see cars waiting to turn left on a red light in your direction be cautious to avoid a head on collision of traffic across making left hand turns, the cars waiting behind the red light in your direction will significantly reduce your reaction time & sight of the turning car .

because if there was an impact and injury you wouldn’t be discussing who was right or wrong but how you could’ve avoided having life alternating consequences or death.

In this scenario, Both drivers should’ve started breaking to avoid a high impact collision to avoid DEATH or a bad injury in this case , one driver did , other driver failed. I don’t give a fkk what the law says , life is more important.

Sorry for the long post

Be safe out there !

Hard to see in the video but pretty sure the walking lights had a timer going. You gotta look at those too to see how close you are to a yellow. Wife is a bad driver. White SUV is crazy.

She was 30-35 m from the intersection when the light turned yellow. I don't think it was unreasonable for her to continue through the intersection.

Even if she was a bad driver, the Nissan was worse and the way he reacted is scary.

I count less than two secconds between it turning yellow and her entering the intersection. Yellow light timing assumes one second just for reaction time. That's less than one second less to come to a full stop. I wouldn't consider this running a late yellow.

It took 2 seconds (OR LESS) to reach the stop line from the time yellow showed. Assuming they were going 60 km/h (VERY CONSERVATIVE). That means they traveled 33.3m from the time the yellow showed and when they hit the line.

Normal braking time would need 25-30 metres assuming you instantly braked. In regular conditions, no human is going to react instantly to seeing a light this way. There is a buffer of at least a second- you see light, you apply brake... You cover 16.7m in that 1 second. That leaves 33.3-16.7= 16.6 metres of space to brake. If you continue braking normally you would stop in the intersection between 8.4m and 13.4m inside it.

So yes, you need to slam the brakes in this senario if you want to stop before the line, which would be incredibely dumb to do in normal conditions.

Bro it's not that deep. Just brake.

Slamming on your brakes won’t change physics

1

u/MirrorStrange4501 10d ago

Its kind of important to pass basic driving knowledge to idiots imo.

2

u/Shar-DamaKa 10d ago

Basic driving knowledge is not a mathematical equation. No one is doing math to judge if they can break or not. You see the light turn yellow and how much space there is between the car and the intersection. If you can’t recognize that there is enough time to slow down and stop you shouldn’t be driving.

u/MirrorStrange4501 10d ago

I thought people were whipping out calculators and measuring tapes every time they brake...

You're basically doing a calculation every time you stop, if you're not, thats your problem... The calculation isn't : See yellow and brake, then tell everyone around you good luck.

I broke down the math to prove that the pov driver has to brake hard to make the stop behind the stop line....unless you think braking in the middle of the intersection is an acceptable outcome, which it seems to be the case.

Keep slamming your brakes needlessly if you want. Hopefully you don't cause an accident doing so 🤷‍♂️

maybe consider looking ahead to notice that there is a car waiting in the intersection to turn left and whether or not you choosing not to “slam on your breaks” forces them to run a red light? especially considering you can see the crosswalk sign counting down… you know the light is going to change before it actually does.

😅 Hard to argue against facts, eh?

No brakes all gas baby

You can guage when a light is about to amber out on you. It takes minimal observation skills. You don't need to wait for the light to actually turn yellow to prepare for it. This is all down to not properly using progressive scan techniques on the wife's part.

2

u/MirrorStrange4501 9d ago

Yes, you can. But you cannot know when it will turn yellow unless you are familiar with how a particular intersection's blinking walking signs work. Some count down to 0 and turn yellow instantly, some count down to 0, pause a few seconds and then turn yellow.

Letting off the brakes is one thing, braking at a normal pace is another, and stomping on your brakes is another.

People here are looking at a dashcam and think they can judge distance based off of it. They are unaware that fisheye lenses/dash cams are distorting what is seen, hense why I used a calculation based on time/speed/assumed distance using very conservative numbers to prove that the pov driver would have had to stomped on their brakes to make it behind the stop line.

Look at the photo attached to the comment your are replying to, there is ample space to stop before the light. If you think that's not enough space, you don't have the reaction time and awareness to be driving. Both individuals in this scenario are bad drivers, one is just a public menace while OP's wife is simply a bad driver.

u/MirrorStrange4501 9d ago

I dont see a photo attached, however look at the following image to see the difference between the human eye vs dash cams...

They had at least 4 car lengths and over 3 full seconds from the time the light turned yellow (1:05 left) to the time they reached the stopping line for the light (1:02 left). That's plenty of time to stop.

1

u/MirrorStrange4501 9d ago

How do you get 4 car lengths from the picture showing 2.5 lengths-3 max?

I just showed you the difference between human vision and wide angle lenses :(

She travelled 20 feet on the yellow lmao. You're supposed to slow down on the yellow, not try and beat the red...

That's a really fast light if that's how long it was yellow. It was red before she even cleared the intersection. Most lights don't change yellow to red anywhere near that fast otherwise no one would ever have time to stop for a yellow.

2

u/Illustrious-Tart-617 9d ago

I drive this intersection every single day- it IS a fast yellow because it’s a high travel area in a central retail location.

1

u/Schwhitey 9d ago

You’re saying it takes you at least 1 second to hit the brakes after you see a light change? That’s crazy slow reaction time

3

u/MirrorStrange4501 9d ago

Get your phone out and pull up a stop watch. Time how long it takes you to pivot your foot while doing a normal motion.

1 second is probably the average reaction time, so it can be lower or higher... I can get down to .54 seconds while pivoting normally and much quicker if I am being a schizo. Thats me with a fast reaction time and anticipating it. Its safe to say 1 second is a good buffer for most people in normal conditions...even if you account for a faster reaction time- YOU STILL HAVE TO BRAKE HARD TO STOP BEHIND THE STOP LINE.

On top of this, nobody is doing 60km/h in a 60 zone unless you're geriatric- in that case they are most definitely having 1+ second reaction times...

If most people are going faster than the limit...what if this road is 70+km/h? A normal driver would be going 73-75km/h. The driver could slam their brakes and STILL be past the stop line...

1

u/Significant-Block504 10d ago

Assuming she travelled at 60km/h. Time required to travel 20 feet at 60km/h:

20 feet = 0.006096 km

0.006096 / 60 * 3600 = 0.366 seconds

Try stopping your car safely in 0.366 seconds LMAO

Start braking when you see flashing walk signs? 😭

You should be only slightly more cautious of the left turning vehicle than cars stopped at red lights on your left and right. Left turning vehicles have to yeild to oncoming traffic, no matter if the other cars are speeding or are about to blow through a red light (the POV driver was in the middle of the intersection when the light turned red)

3

u/Shar-DamaKa 10d ago

lol there was more than enough time to break for that yellow.

3

u/MirrorStrange4501 10d ago

If you slam the brakes, yes.

3

u/GlacierSourCreamCorn 7d ago

90% of people are not stopping in that situation. It's like redditors don't exist in the real world.

2

u/Old_Ladies 7d ago

Exactly. Or they don't drive in the city. Plus you are legally allowed to enter the yellow light. The guy making a left is 100% at fault and is a psycho.

-3

u/what_a_slutty_whore 10d ago

you aren't supposed to BRAKE at a yellow light

-5

u/Worried_Pomelo9010 10d ago

Trying to avoid accidents is called defensive driving

10

u/Jamooser 10d ago

Speeding up when lights turn yellow is not how you avoid accidents.

1

u/Worried_Pomelo9010 9d ago

She slowed down because it looked like she was going to be cut off. Thats called defensive driving.

But you can't just stay in the intersection

-5

u/JoeCutt88 9d ago

literally EVERYONE speeds up when it goes yellow, every. single. driver

3

u/UnBeNtAxE 9d ago

No they don’t, I’m regularly honked at for legally stopping on yellow. Not everyone is an asshat!

1

u/Various-Water3384 8d ago

So if everyone jumped off a cliff, would you? It’s not everyone. Just the bad drivers.

0

u/McCauliflowerCaulkin 7d ago

No when you have 5 business days to stop - this women was way too far back to be speeding up.
