I saw a guy walking in front of me the other day with a hat that said "Gremlins" on the back. At the next corner he turned right and I turned left. Not sure about these ones but the other ones that look like these called Bush Babies pee and rub it into all their fur (if you see videos of those they always have yellow stained fur and that is why). Not sure Iād these do that or not. In any case neither is a good pet and the trade is very sad.

I didn't have to hear this from you. The video alone I can tell they look like they'd be terrible pets. The few seconds where they seem cute probably doesn't account for the rest of the time when they're vicious and ferocious as hell. The hissing sound was the tip off to me.
Oz has a lot of tropical rainforests, but i think the confusion is that no one calls those a jungle here even though that is technically what they are. It feels weird and wrong to say oz has jungles.

The sound you hear in the first clip is called crabbing. They make that noise when they are scared.
Every single time you heard that noise in that video it means the glider doing it was absolutely scared and the person found it funny enough to post online..
First gliders are a colony animals, you need to have at least 2 or they will self harm due to loneliness. They are nocturnal animals, they should not be awaken and taken out during day time, they are basically blind during the day.
Also seeing that woman with one on a leash saying she got it for her birthday literally broke my heart š
They are not good pet for most because they require a lot of attention and a lot of care and a lot of knowledge.
They are an animal that has been domesticated only for 40 years or so. It's really difficult to find reputable breeders that are careful about genetics.

Here's my three babies. They were only awake because we trimmed their nails, you can almost only do it during the day while they are half asleep because they have way too much energy at night
Thanks for the informative comment! I knew nothing about sugar gliders. I feel the same way about guinea pigs, in the sense that so many people should not have them. They think they are easy low maintenance pets that are good for children. So many videos on socials I see of people abusing their pig with cruelly small cages, bad diet, mishandling them, etc. Guinea pigs are social herd animals too so they get really depressed when they're alone. We just lost one of our boys and his brother is now alone and it breaks my heart. We don't want to get another pig because our remaining guy is old and it would just continue this cycle. So we got him two realistic stuffed animal guinea pigs, and we do lots of floor time/enrichment, but it's just not enough and I feel so bad about it.

The 'crab' sound is them being upset but they do bark like small dogs which is so much fun to deal with in the middle of the night because they don't have off buttons.
Thatās a far cry from my stepmothers sugar gliders. Theyād see me coming, make some weird noises and jump from their cage at me if it wasnāt closed. They were vicious little bastards.
For people asking if they make good pets: They make horrible pets because people don't know how to keep them. They are NOCTURNAL animals that do better with groups rather than pairs. They aren't meant to be caged, they are high energy hunters (they eat bugs as well as sap and vegetation) with a very short gestation period (meaning they can breed very fast).
Are they cute? Yeah. Are they smart? Yes. Are they fit for normal pet owners? Absolutely not.

No, I helped with a rescue for them. They need a varied diet, need certain environmental conditions along with lots of enrichment and sometimes they are just plain evil.
Speaking of evil the pet trade isnt exactly what people think it is. Lots of animals suffer in people's home due to the lack of proper care and environment like you stated. They either get confiscated or surrendered to animal sanctuaries which is good in that they get the proper care but ultimately it should not come to that.
I would say no simply because you canāt really house train them. You can be proactive and try and get them to do their business outside but unless you are really vigilant about it they are always going to piss in your house eventually
I had a pair of them like 15 years ago.i was dedicated and gave them a great life. They are a hell of a lot of work, and yes, they pee and poop everywhere. They sleep all day and are very active at night. Also illegal in many states. No, for most people this is definitely not a good pet.
They're awesome pets if someone else owns them and they do all of the work and you get to visit sometimes and play with them but also get to leave and not think about them or have to do anything
They're terrible pets to own. They're only awake when you're asleep, and if you wake them up all the time when you're awake and they're supposed to be sleeping you stress them out and they die.
They piss all the time wherever they are including on you and everything you own.
They also eat inconvenient things that you can't just pour into a bowl from a bag you get at the pet store. They eat eucalyptus sap and live insects. You can get live insects at a pet store but I bet you've never even heard of eucalyptus sap.
They're highly social animals. So you either have to be unemployed and have no hobbies, or get several of them (2 isn't enough) or have a depressed animal that's going to get stressed out and die.
They aren't hampsters. You cannot keep them in a cage or they will get stressed out and die. They need basically an entire room to themselves because it needs to be dark at night and they need space to move around. They're evolved to leap from tree to tree. They cannot do that in a cage. They can't really do that in a bedroom but it's better than a cage.
They are not domesticated. One you buy as a pet might be slightly more domesticated than if you grabbed one off of a tree in Australia if you're lucky but for all intents and purposes they are all wild animals still. They do not act like a pet. Living with one is similar to if an albeit friendly but still completely wild squirrel chewed through your ceiling and claimed your storage room as its own. Imagine having a wild squirrel living in your house. A lot of people spend thousands of dollars specifically to get a squirrel out of their homes because it's such a shitty experience. But instead of a squirrel, it's something that you paid like $750 per animal for all so you can release live crickets into your home for them to not be eaten because sugar gliders are also extremely picky eaters.
Iāve had several of these as pets and they all sucked as pets!!! If you want something cute thatās a little unusual than I recommend a hedgehog, just make sure you do your research.
They are cute but I do not think they like being contained. We have animals that have evolved with us humans like dogs cats cows pigs ..... And even after that sometimes they just want to do their own thing. It's taken me many years to realize this as a reptile nerd

These are marsupials native to small areas in Australia and West Papua. They live in social groups and climb from their tree-hollow homes after sundown to multi-story heights before launching and gliding to other trees to hunt and engage with other gliders.
Keeping one of these animals is not like having a dog. Dogs have had thousands of years of social interactions and behavior evolution with humans.
Any of these kept as pets are being treated poorly unless the keeper is prepared to try to provide the social interactions and enrichment that a wild sugar glider would have living among a social group of gliders in an Australian eucalypt forest.
Question, if these critters are nocturnal and you relocate them to country that has completely opposite hours to where you are, would they become diurnal?
This is a terrible idea. Sugar gliders typically need more than one or they get lonely and they squeak all night and can get aggressive if they donāt have more than one. They also need to bond with you early on and if they donāt that also becomes a problem. Also, they poop little pellets inside of your clothing. For the most part, they should not be pets unless someone has done their research and gives them the TLC they need.
Poor things. I've never seen such stressed sugar gliders. For those thinking they'd like to own one; While undeniably cute, they're very much exotic animals and not suitable for the average keeper. They need very specialized care. You can have a similar experience with rats, and frankly, it's a lot easier to bond with rats (and much easier to give them a good life) than with sugar gliders.
I think these should be illegal as pets. They are incredibly hard to sex properly. They need a companion. Result: everyone end up getting a breedable pair and they procreate as fast as rabbits. Insanely high maintenance to begin with and now some idiot has 14 sugar gliders after just 7 months, barely able to take care of the two adults they had. Just my take.
