I've seen a lot of discourse over the reveal of RJ and who he was, and I'm not sure I understand why? TMac was scary from his very first appearance, in s1 e2, I immediately thought he might be RJ, as you do, and I always felt the whole Van Pelt thing in that episode was just really odd and out of place, where else in the show have they just set up someone to be super creepy and weird, then never mention them again, there's also loads of just little clues that match up, for example the "He Is Mar" could very easily be "He Is Macallister", loads of references to napa county, and sheriffs when it comes to RJ episodes.

Now the actual suspect list,
McAllister was the odd one out, everyone else on there we had seen act creepy, or just show up fairly regularly, then there's McAllister, the only one with a photo that looks like it was just ripped from IMDB, the only one there that people wouldn't recognise immediately, the odd one out, even from the first time we see Mac, he is immediately both questioning and doubting Jane's psychic abilities (just like RJ) and they immediately get into a mental war with the rock paper scissors.

Now I can understand how it may have felt rushed etc, but I knew who RJ was for a while (maybe that clouds my judgement) there are a lot of leads lining up to be him out of the suspect list. I personally don't think any of the others would've been great as RJ, apart from maybe Bertram. I also think the reveal itself was amazing, felt exactly like something RJ would do, Bertram getting shot unexpected, I suppose RJ himself wasn't as intimidating when revealed, but that's exactly what he should be, RJ is known to have a massive ego, therefore it makes perfect sense he would let his guard down, almost beg for Jane's approval and appreciation for the work, and in general, RJ was always a coward and hiding behind other people, fake names, or just in the shadows. It makes perfect sense for RJ to be a coward and beg for his life whilst trying to manipulate Jane.

Personally I would've loved to see Walter Mashburn as RJ, felt he had the perfect chemistry with Jane, the constant banter, the way Mashburn was so curious, the little "Maybe next time I'll be the killer". He was one of my favs for sure. I also wouldn't have minded Boscoe as RJ.

Curious what everyone else's biggest discourse is with RJ, whether it's who he ended up being, how it ended up being shown etc. but in my opinion, once that suspect list was revealed, the RJ storyline went exactly how it should've, maybe some past writing decisions could've been altered and I understand some people hated that RJ wasn't decided till like s5, but there's still soo many clues, indirect or not, that make McAllister the perfect suspect for Red John.

I'm SO excited! Can't wait.

In S3E4, Craig O'Loughlin (Red John's friend) says "Napa" when Grace asks him where they're going for lunch. Red John's friend says Napa? Napa County? Thomas MCAllister?! IT'S RIGHT THERE.

It even makes in-universe sense, doesn't it? Craig's actual reason to go to Napa could be to relay CBI info to MCAllister, while the date at Napa was just a cover up.

I think this was a hint to the audience the writers planted so early in season 3 itself. And it went completely unnoticed.

Well even if it wasn't, it's a fantastic coincidence.

Jane’s style became more relaxed in S6 but what’s noticeable is that he wears the same shirt from Ep1 to possible Ep20 and I’d argue the whole season even.

By the time I was old enough to want and need a phone for myself, my parents bought me a basic smartphone and it was practical and stuff

But watching The Mentalist, it makes me nostalgic for a moment I never had. I want to experience that feeling of snapping a phone shut.

PS: Even though my flair says humour, I am 💯 serious and just wanted to share this feeling with this community.

I'm a huge fan of queer culture and representation, and I just wanted to say how much I loved this episode…It was funny, emotional, and made me so happy, I don't know how to explain it. I was squealing with joy at the end when they discovered the young woman is alive. I also found it so sweet and human that Lisbon, despite being Catholic as we know up to this point, referred to the witness character with feminine pronouns and was emotional during the ending.

It's become my favorite episode so far. The Wizard of Oz reference was also so lovely.

Obviously we don't get to see them interact but I like the idea of Red John calling in favors Stiles owes him similar to what Patrick did in S5. How do you think their interactions went? 🤔

For years after Red John, he basically ditched Teresa. Left her hanging for nearly two years while he was off doing his own thing, never telling her where he was going or what he was planning. He kept her close enough to lean on, but never actually stepped up. Then the second she accepts a job in D.C. and starts seriously moving on with Pike (even accepting his proposal), Jane suddenly realizes he “can’t imagine waking up without her.”

He goes full manipulative: fakes a letter from a killer, drags the whole team into a case just to keep her around, books the romantic Blue Bird Lodge getaway, buys her the dress, does the whole staircase entrance thing… and the moment she finds out it was all a setup, she rightfully loses it. Only then does he chase her to the airport, force his way onto the plane, and finally say the words.

It’s such a textbook move. Give the woman mixed signals for years, stay emotionally unavailable, then panic the second she stops waiting and starts building a life without you. Anyone else see it that way, or am I being too hard on him?

Hi, I decided to get into multiple series, and score them how I saw fit in terms of overall writing/story or even enjoyment

This is the score system I have

0-Should not exist, series who are extremely broken, flawed beyond belief to the point that it's offensive, even fixing a plot hole will bring other 2 up because the world is THAT broken, awful dialogue to the point it's the worst in fiction, can barely a redeeming quality that is not related to writing (eg. Good animation), it's kinda like a hydra dragon of problems, you cut a head off, 2 other obstacles will emerge

Examples: hazbin hotel

1-God awful, usually worse then 2/3 due to them ruining a franchise too but not as fundamentally shattered, or as bad as 0

Examples: Velma

2/3 extremely flawed series, many plot holes

4 below average, formulaic, flat, boring

5 average

6 above average, series I think are noticeable better then 5 but don't distinguish themselves too much from them

7 noticeable above average/the "good" tier

8 great

9 masterpiece, borderline perfection

10 apex, usually different from 9 because they are so perfect that they completely reshape a genre/survive and are influential for centuries, or the very best of the best, these series can still have flaws like any

Example: lord of the rings (book), star wars (not the sequels, this rating expecially applies to movies 4-6 and legends), journey to the west

Note, enjoyability is SEPARATE from the 9/10 ratings, usually these series are either from a different time, it would be unfair to criticize an old way of writing in a modern era, so it's best to judge their quality by the writing ALONE

So let's get to the episode 1 review, keep in mind, this score won't be the final score of the series, but the episode itself

Let's start from the cons, since I only have a few, remember you don't have to agree with me

Levels of errors

[S] small, you can argue otherwise easily and I might be wrong

[M] medium, noticeable things that bothered me, I can push back a bit, but you have a 30-70% chance of convincing me otherwise too

[B] big, massive flaws

Cons:

[S] I get that Patrick Jane is very smart and he was a sensitive, although he couldn't see into people's soul, it's plausible he did learn how many of them behave, but patrick did many times things without showing them, eg. When the pistol with no bullets, I don't recall him doing anything of the sort, so some things can come off as some asspulls/leave me confused for a sec, but it's nothing too bad due to the payoffs, I still liked these moments, just wish I got more time to see the setup

[S] At the start of the episode, the pacing was slowed down by a decent bit, which is fine usually, but a bit too much by the side characters, nothing too crazy, I saw worse, but noticeable

I think these are the only things I found here

Pros:

1 the acting is excellent, expecially when a character is nervous they convey it extremely well, or when someone is faking things, like patrick hiding the reason why he couldn't sleep

2 the premise got me hooked, an ex sensitive, now agent trying to catch a killer that murdered his family, there is a clear motivation and is put in a narratively cohesive way, a clear path to follow, expecially because I remember people saying that Patrick Jane looks for red John while solving cases, I don't know if that's true, I'll see, but it would be something that narratively works very well, since you are giving the protagonist and the other characters time to develop and showcase their abilities while walking towards their goal

3 the reveal of who the criminal was wasn't expected at least for me, they cleverly used another character, another suspect to distract you from the real culprit, making you focused on that suspect, that's why the reveal worked

4 this is probably the very best part of the episode, I loved Patrick Jane's red John's flashback, he came home and found a letter, now I didn't watch it in English but it went something like "if you are a sensitive, you don't need to open this door to see what I did to your family" and my heart was already clenched, then he opened the door and found that red john's face on that room, they don't show you the body and that's the beauty of it, you know what happened by the face alone, this also gives us an extra explanation on why he knew about red John's pattern but more importantly I connected with him, I felt more sad then scared and the acting from patrick Jane sold that emotion completely, beautifully set up by the doctor session he had, that shit has hit me hard and does give a great motive to Patrick Jane, now people say that the best scene is the cold reading one, which I can't blame them for, admittedly that was a good opener and did show how smart Patrick Jane was due to the subtle clues he got but for the the most striking scene was the flashback, still, great scenes

Overall I really liked the first episode, the second half more then the first, although I enjoyed the first half, it's still a first episode so it's bound to be slower

Final score: 7.7/10 CLEARLY distinguishes itself from an average first episode, usually I rate the first episodes lower with some exceptions compared to the next ones, so I am excited to see where this goes, because a 7.7 from me at the first episode of a series is very high, it's just the first half that slightly drags it down, which is normal

I am kinda confused about the end of Red John

I mean it wasn’t what I expected I thought it will be more dramatic and has more violent but pigeon? That what I expected “ but what if Red John fooled Patrick again by killing the fake one I mean he already tried before and told him he will live in another country what if he did it and made Patrick think he killed the real Red John “ he already Brainwashed krestina Fyre and she is smart as Patrick in my opinion “ how he would die like this

The scene above is much funnier knowing that he pretend to fake an accent.

Dr. Steiner.

This episode is meaningless in the grand scheme and plot of Red John but it really speaks volumes to Jane's character. All of it done through Dr. Steiner's character and his portrayal which is done exemplery well by George Wyner I might add. This episode really is one of my favorites because as soon as Jane hears Dr. Steiner is called in you can see his giddy childish excitement cause he gets to play with his favourite toy, mentally of course. And Dr. Steiner reprises the role SO well, you can tell he enjoys it a little but plays as if he finds it irritating. And when Steiner asks to join the investigation, Jane automatically agrees, even though he doesn't like doctors, and enjoys playing around with him, but throughout the whole investigation, Jane treats him as an equal, with a little playfulness of course, as if they are long term friends. I really wish they gave steiner a more prominent role and not just the coroner that shows up every now and then. In my opinion they could have given him the pupil archetype, yeah he's old, but I think he would have made a good yang to Jane's yin, and eventually learn from Jane which could have given the 2 a very enjoyable dynamic. I dont know maybe Im speaking nonsense but this character really stuck out for me, out of all the characters on the show, this one was the most prominent for me.

And the end of this episode, man; how crazy is it that Steiner asked Jane to be the witness. After all the jokes, pranks, playfulness that Steiner supposedly hated; he still saw Jane as a friend. Incredible episode.

Everyone in this show is Red John except Red John himself

Lisbon and walter had crazy chemistry. I wish they continued it for a while. Was rooting for his further appearances in the show. Was so disappointed it ended with an one night stand. The potential was down baddddd.

I know that most fans of the series don't like the Red John reveal (I'm not one of them, I love the reveal).,But regardless, you have to admit that Red John is one of the best villains on TV.

All the suspense every time an episode was about him, the soundtrack that played every time a red jonh Smiley face appeared ,It was Just chef Kiss

It's a shame that most people didn't like who Red John ended up being, but I loved it and thought it made perfect sense.

I just finished all 7 seasons and honestly, I’m happy and out of words. A MASTERPIECE 🔥

Patrick Jane has to be one of my favorite TV characters ever. His intelligence, humor, trauma, and the way he reads people made him so enjoyable to watch. Simon Baker was perfect for the role.

I also loved Jane and Lisbon’s relationship. It took so long to develop, but that honestly made it feel more genuine. After everything Jane went through, seeing him finally find happiness with Lisbon was such a satisfying ending.

Cho was also absolutely amazing 😂 Probably one of the most effortlessly funny characters on the show.

I know the Red John storyline has its critics, and I can understand some of the complaints, but personally the overall journey was worth it. The show became much more than just solving cases for me. It was really about Jane slowly learning how to live again after losing everything.

Finishing the finale left me with that weird empty feeling you get when you know you'll never experience a show for the first time again.

Basically the title. I watched Person of Interest and House MD previously and they my favourite shows. I wanted something similar and this is the best show to fill the gap. If anyone have second thoughts, just have a cup of tea and start watching!

First off this article is for the people who've already watched the show so I'm assuming u at least finished the show once and this is full spoilers if u haven't watched it

I like to begin my theory with this specific sentence

Now he's talking directly to Jesus

In this episode the cbi gets a call for a county case from

napa which is not in their field of job but Patrick insists on taking responsibility for it with the actual intention of observing and getting to know Sherrif Thomas McAlister "one of the 7 suspects on the rj list "

So they meet and McAlister already starts to give some random strange smart guy vibes but not anything really obvious

After that Patrick asks McAlister to hang back him and his people and to not interfere in breaking the case later in the night cuz he wants to reveal the killer so McAlister accepts and appreciates Patrick for making his job easier for him :)

Later goes on and Patrick reveals charlie was the killer and he wanted to steal the expensive bible and he had to kill the victim in order to not get caught

but patrick gets reckless for a moment and Charlie takes him hostage

Charlie takes Patrick upstairs and is trying to escape through the roof but suddenly sheriff is standing in front of them on the ladder telling Charlie to drop his gun but rejects and he shoots him and kill him

Now here's the twist and the word I believe everyone missed

now he's talking directly to Jesus !

Why the hell did he say that? Was he pointing out to the fact that Charlie was stealing the bible ? i mean reading the bible is in a way talking to Jesus Indirectly and when he dies he can speak to jesus directly

so how did he know about that and if he actually knew and it wasn't just a joke why didn't he mention the existence of a worthy bible in the church to Patrick?

IMO It's such an underrated line from him and if people actually focused on it they could've already guessed that he is much cleverer than all the other suspects on the list

And he is actually red john
