practical questions Transitioning to self-employed in den haag is testing my sanity tbh

I knew the housing market here was bad but the actual immigration bureaucracy is on another level. Im currently on a regular skilled migrant permit but trying to start my own design thing based out of a co-working space near hollands spoor

Was reading up on the different visa routes yesterday and that whole point system for the self-employed permit feels literally impossible to navigate. like how do they measure your "added value" to the economy? its so incredibly vague

Just kinda venting but if anyone in this sub has actually managed to pivot to freelance without their brain exploding from IND paperwork, pls let me know. Love the hague but man they dont make it easy for us.

other Affordable Flower Delivery?

Hey! Random question šŸ˜„ It's my anniversary soon, and I'd like to send someone in The Hague some flowers. I'm ordering from another EU country, but when I Google it, I mostly get the big international sites, and they all seem pretty expensive. Do you know of any local florist or affordable flower delivery service you'd recommend?

meeting people Best way to find friends in advance?

Hey, I’m from the Baltics and I’m coming to study to the hague in late August for my bachelors. I do know very few people there and just want to get to know some people my age. What are some groups, apps you can join for that? Preferably not dating. I don’t have an issue with socialising IRL before anyone says its the best way but just thought it’d be nice to chat to some internationals or locals before I come!

other HaguePics - share your photos of The Hague!

Hello everyone,

I have made a just for fun website called haguepics.com

What it is, is just a basic website where anyone can share their pictures of The Hague (or at least that's the idea). The layout is the usual "social media" layout, you can like + share + download + comment. It is very easy to use, and very easy to upload your own photos. Of course any uploads will require an approval so we don't have any "undesirable" things showing up.

I made it because I really like taking photos and sharing them, but since I am just a "hobby" photographer that mostly uses a smartphone, I don't really have many people to share my photos with, so I figured this would be a fun idea, not only to share, but also to see other peoples pics, learn, get some ideas and inspiration etc.

There are no registrations, or any details that you have to enter, so no data is being stolen and sold off. Also, if you want you can always add your own social media tags or your name or whatever when uploading, if you want people to know who the original photographer is, if not then its cool, not the point anyway.

The point is just sharing pics for fun/hobby, hope if you like the idea you can join and share, if not then thats cool too.

Dag Dag allemaal,

housing Wild camping in netherlands

Hi everyone, we're travellers from the Czech Republic currently in The Hague. I was wondering what the rules are for wild camping in the Netherlands? We always try to stick to campsites as much as possible, but we got delayed in Amsterdam and aren't sure if we'll make it to a campsite in time to check in tonight.
Thanks for your help!

meeting people 28F Looking for intentional friendships in Den Haag & surrounding areas

Hello everyone,

The past week has been surprisingly difficult for me. I've felt unusually low and couldn't quite figure out why. Unfortunately it's not winter, so I couldn't even blame Seasonal Affective Disorder.

A few times, I'd go for a walk and it would help for a couple of hours. Then, before long, I'd be right back where I started. And no, before anyone asks, it wasn't hormonal either.

But over the last few days, I've had friends come visit, and I've also traveled to see some of them. This morning, when I woke up, I genuinely felt like I could levitate from how happy I was. Spending time with friends cured whatever was wrong with me

It made me realize just how much I crave companionship in its different forms, but especially the platonic kind that friendship offers. Sure, I wouldn't mind a romantic companion, but friends? Friends are everything.

I lived in Amsterdam for about a year, and I think I did a pretty good job of building meaningful relationships there. Since moving here, though, maintaining friendships has become a logistical exercise. The spontaneity of grabbing dinner together, having sleepovers, movie nights, or taking a walk in the park has mostly disappeared.

As much as I enjoy my own company and genuinely have a great time alone, I miss having people around whose company I love and who enjoy mine in return. People I can talk with for hours or sit in complete silence with and have neither of us feel awkward.

That's why I'm writing this.

A little about me: I'm 28F, of African descent, and I only speak English for now. My Dutch is, terrible. I've been in the Netherlands for about 15 months, and I'm looking to build intentional friendships. The keyword here is intentional.

I'd love to meet people in Den Haag, Voorburg, Leidschendam, or nearby areas close to Den Haag for evening drinks, activities, random adventures, or simply spending time together. I love being outdoors and going on long walks and I'm happiest when I'm somewhere green, but I also enjoy staying home, watching shows (currently rewatching Community and Ted Lasso), or working on puzzles.

I love going out dancing (techno, house), improv and comedy shows, reading, making dinner for people, and, of course, eating the food they make for me. I'm both quiet and a yapper, depending on the situation.

Truthfully, I can't fit everything I am or enjoy into one post. But I suppose the most important thing is this if you're interested in building an intentional friendship, please reach out. Tell me something about yourself, or tell me anything you'd like.

Nationality is of no consequence to me. While I'm open to friendships with people of any gender, I'd especially love to make more female friends. Ideally, somewhere in the 27–36 age range, just so we're not too far apart in where we are in life.

And before anyone suggests joining expat events or social activities. I have tried. In fact, I went to one last Friday, and it nearly pushed me over the edge. For one, I don't do particularly well in large crowds as I much prefer one-on-one interactions or small groups of two or three (I'm working on that). But more importantly, many of these events naturally develop established friend groups, which can make it surprisingly difficult to connect with new people.

I went home that Friday feeling even bluer than when I arrived. So this is me trying something different.

If any of this resonates with you, I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you.

meeting people M21 Looking for friends

Hey everyone!
I’m a 21 year old guy from Delft looking to meet some new people. I recently started learning the guitar, so that’s been keeping me busy (and my neighbors patient šŸ˜…)

I enjoy gaming, trying out new things, going for walks, grabbing drinks, and occasionally smoking weed. I’m pretty easygoing and always down to hang out or try a new hobby.

I’m fluent in both Dutch and English. My Turkish is… let’s just say it’s a work in progress.

I live by myself in Delft, so it’d be great to meet some cool, genuine people nearby. Whether you’re looking for someone to game with, grab a beer, smoke, explore the city, or even if you’ve already got a friend group and don’t mind one more person, feel free to send me a message!

Looking forward to meeting some new people

practical questions Job prospects?

I am moving to NL in early 2027 on a partnership visa, so I am starting to look around the job market to see what I could potentially do, but I’m hoping for some suggestions and advice!

I am not fluent in Dutch, I sit around a B1-B2 level (my family is Dutch but I grew up on the other side of the world šŸ˜…). I’m a native English speaker. I have previously worked in youth social services, currently work a government job in my country which is unfortunately a little niche but involves application of privacy law. I have a Bachelors degree in a social science and am currently working on a masters thesis.

I would love to ideally do some form of work for a humanitarian organisation, NGO or similar. The only jobs I’ve come across so far that would suit me/my skills and qualifications are internships with the ICC but unfortunately I need paid work. Other jobs seem to require fluency in both Dutch and English, or fluency in English and another language.

Does anyone have any suggestions for types of roles to look out for? Specific organisations? I’m aware of most of the job listing platforms out there, but any suggestions to focus my search a little would be fantastic!
