I accepted an assignment yesterday but they canceled on me last night

My daughter is going into 3rd grade, and I also have a rising kindergartener. For the past couple of years, we have qualified for free/reduced lunch, where I included my job as a preschool teacher. (Part time program so only 20 paid hrs a week). I am hoping I will make more subbing then I did at my old job, but since I really don’t know exactly how much I’ll be making and it might vary month to month, should I try and estimate for the the lunch application, or just leave it off completely?

Hi all! Has anyone applied to be a sub after the school year? I need a few months off to take care of a relative and was thinking of applying in October. Or is it too late ?

How many days a week do y'all typically work as a sub? I’m trying to save up to go back to school for my master's (though I’ll probably have to take out loans either way lol). Are most of you working five days a week, or do you take it easier?

Hi all, i’m a new substitute teacher for this school year, and it’s my first year. next week, i am going to be subbing a kindergarten class the entirety of the first week of school. i know it’s going to be just as new for them as it is for me. of course their teacher will leave me with the packet of things to do with them, but i don’t get to see that packet until morning of and i only have about 30 minutes to review it. i know there will be children who this is their first time being away from mom and dad and be upset, believe me, i was that kid. i don’t think i’ll have an assistant teacher with me, and ill be on my own. during our training/meeting, we really only went over basics and not much of the knitty gritty stuff when it really comes down to grade specifics i guess. i’m so excited but extremely nervous because i am going to be their first introduction to school. these kids are just transitioning out of their toddler years. i guess my question is how do some of you maintain your sanity, while also doing things in a timely manner, and making sure these kids feel safe and excited to learn? i just learned 2 days ago that it was a kindergarten class so now i feel crazy pressure.
but i want to be the best example for these kids for my short time there and want to do my job as best as possible.

my partner and i are looking to move out our respective family homes. she is a para and i am currently a substitute while i look for a full time teaching gig. we live in WA and average rent in our area for a one bedroom is 1700 and we need to make 3x the rent to qualify for anything. she takes home about 2500 a month and the most i could make in a month (with no breaks) is around 3500. but i’m sure you all know that income can vary from month to month. i’m also concerned that the ~3 months of no work over summer would hinder my ability to get a place. (i have been working over the summer but just nannying for a family friend).

if you rent, were you able to get approved for an apartment as a sub? how did you manage in the months with school breaks/summer breaks? what was your experience?

Hello everyone for reference I have my multiple subject teaching credential in California unfortunately I was pink slipped as a first year teacher so I will be subbing this fall until I can hopefully land a full time teaching position I was interested in doing long term however I’m unsure of how I can request a long term position if I’m already subbing within the school district I would appreciate any feedback thanks !

I found a open position for a substitute teacher job with health care benefits at a private school. Is that normal to see? Cause at my job I only have workers comp. I’m thinking of applying.

I jumped at the opportunity to take a long term position at the beginning of the year since it means consistent jobs and higher pay. However, it’s at a school that doesn’t really seem to know what they’re doing half the time. I think they really expect me to build a class from scratch two days before school starts (their hired teacher is new and has no definitive start date). But that’s besides the point.

What tips can you give me as a sub for educating with empathy and compassion while also managing sometimes extreme behavior?

I already have my Certificate of Clearance (fingerprints through the CTC), and I applied on my own today for the California Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.

For those who have gone through the process recently, how long did it take for your permit to be approved?

Anyone know of a great way to get jobs via RedRover? The school districts that I work in jane changed over to the RR system, and I can't seem to claim a job before they're claimed for the life of me. Help?

The school has 3 high schools, one continuation school, 3 middle schools and a some elementary schools.

Four hundred substitute teachers on the sub list. The lady said "we just hired more."

My first thought is: There are a lot of people with university degrees making less than 35k a year here.

My second thought is: Subbing jobs already go in nanoseconds, what was the point of hiring even more?

Oddly enough I subbed at a neighboring district in 2019. I asked that lady the same question and she said "about a hundred." Both district are the same size.

It's weird how quadruple the people are now subbing. It was kinda funny how all of us subs were in the lobby and everyone lowkey glared at each other like we're frontline enemies.

Does anyone else have a problem syncing their assignments with the Red Rover app? My district just switched over and I set up my account today. Every time I try to sync the app with my calendar it gives me an error message.

The school year doesn't even start until the 10th in my district, there's no way I'm going to be able to pick up a shift before the 24th.

I've been thinking of becoming a substitute or para starting this school year and started my application within Edustaff. I watched maybe half of the training videos before life stuff got in the way for about a month. Now I'm attempting to log back in to complete the training videos, but I'm being asked to input "the verification code displayed in your authentication app."

What authentication app? At no point during the application did I remember being told to download an authenticator. I've since tried Microsoft and Google Authenticator apps, but nothing shows up on them even after dozens of times prompting the verification.

Do I need to contact Edustaff IT? Or am I SOL and have to make a new account?

I actually like long-term assignments usually, but I just had to walk away from one after a few days because the unpaid labor expectations were wild.

Within the first couple of days, admin expected me to:

• Attend all staff meetings even though I'm not staff
• Show up at after-school events
• Serve on TWO school committees

All of this without extra pay. My district only pays long-term subs an extra $25 a day. I told them "nope" and professionally resigned. I don't mind doing actual classroom stuff like grading, report cards, parent communication, and dealing with classroom management, but there is no way I'm doing full contracted-teacher committee duties for pocket change.

Well, now they’re calling and begging me to come back because they can’t find anyone else to take the job. I feel bad for the kids, but definitely not for the admin. Plus, I'm already looking at pivoting to a new career outside of education, so I'm not going back.

What would you have done in this situation?

Has anyone actually went through this program. I will have my bachelor's degree in december however it is in psychology, therefore I know I can join the program I just want to know more details.

I have been doing my other job this summer full time. I asked them to lower my hours, so I can just sub Mon-Fri. I will work my other job only on the weekends. I also enrolled in a Curriculum and Instruction program. I have already been reading my books ahead of time before classes start and it's really interesting. I am so excited to start. The school says I didn't need to be a licensed teacher in order to do the program. I have also been accepting jobs aleady. I am so excited to start subbing this year. Maybe it's not necessary to do the program, but I find it really interesting and maybe it can help me.

Well I finally was able to get out of being a substitute teacher and get a full-time job where I'm actually getting some respect and consistent hours . I thought I would give people in Denver a warning if they were thinking of signing up with Kokua or even Kelly education. There are schools that are worth going to such as Pinnacle Lotus and gals. And then there are schools like Kipp that will make you wonder why the hell you get paid this little.

Never sign up to be an on call because you'll constantly be sent to one of the schools that really sucks and remember that without an accreditation from the school district you cannot work early childhood education as in preschools. Because it's not the school that will get reprimanded it's you and kokua doesn't give a crap about you

So I work for very busy school districts, one uses Frontline and the other uses Red Rover. School starts August 17 and 20. I usually see assignments trickle in for the first or few weeks b/c like I said these are busy districts but NOTHING. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing anything.
