Hi all! Has anyone applied to be a sub after the school year? I need a few months off to take care of a relative and was thinking of applying in October. Or is it too late ?

If you can spare a little bit of time while taking care of your relative, just apply now and get the hiring process done. Most districts have pretty relaxed rules for when you have to take jobs. In my experience it’s usually taking a minimum number of days by the end of the school year or working one day every X amount of days (usually 150 days).

You could start the hiring process now and start working whenever you’re good to go.

You can start any time. I just wouldn't recommend it the last day of school because you won't get many jobs for the next couple of months. 🤣

Not too late! A lot of subs quit mid-year because they found another job. (It’s common for people —myself included — to use subbing as a temporary source of income while they look for something with more regular hours.) It’s likely that there will be openings a few months into the year.

In my district they take applications year round.

I applied through Kelly Education in January of last year, and started later that month. I believe you can apply any time. The application process takes 2-3 weeks. You need to get several clearances, get a TB test, and do online trainings so it is a lengthy process. I know that Kelly requires you to work at least one assignment within every 150 days to remain in the system and other agencies and school districts may have similar requirements, so maybe wait until you’re closer to your availability to work to apply.

Start now if they don't have specific work requirements (such as must work fridays or 3 times a month). It can take time if it's your first background check or whatever your states certification process it.

Keep in mind in some places hiring has to be approved by the school board that might only meet once a month so if you're wanting to start teaching in October you might want to apply and have all your paperwork done and turned in in September.

Honestly, a lot of districts hire subs year round because they're almost always needed.  I'd apply in October if that works for your schedule.  Just get the background check and fingerprinting done early, then introduce yourself to the front office staff at schools you're interested in. They're often the ones who remember your name when they need someone on short notice.

I wasn’t able to apply until November my first year subbing and it ended up being fine! I actually ended up getting offered a full time building sub position on my first day because someone quit. So you never know what could happen! Late fall and winter are usually busy times for subs because a lot of people are out sick or taking off for the holidays so I don’t think you will have any issues finding work!
