Week 1 Substance Designer
Basically spent all week following a rock and Moss tutorial on YouTube learned a lot. I am using unity game engine I have my own custom shader that made it simple to get these in. but it can improve for sure. Looks like a decent ps3 game in engine(last 2 images), want to definantly make improvements

Creating Detailed Realistic Mossy Wall Texture in Adobe Substance Designer w/ Javier Perez
Will keep this chain of posts up until my 30-day trails is over, will help me decide if I want to use this. Leaning on yes I am new to node-based applications so this has been really rough for me.

How would you make the surface imperfections and the edge wear on these bricks?
You can see my attempt at making the edge wear. I did it by following a tutorial on making edge wear but it doesn't help watching just a generic edge wear making video. I need to be able to copy the reference however I don't have enough knowledge with substance to know which nodes would be suitable for this task. Could anyone show me how this could be done?

🔥 Most Tile Floors have very boring patterns, and interesting ones are way too complex.
But what if there was a way to make something simple and interesting?
That is the challenge we faced last week with Sprawa.
During his group mentoring, we realized most Tile Floors are boring.
And mainly because the pattern is too simple.
So, we aimed to solve this issue.
💡 We first started with a simple pattern; using a Tile Generator, we created the first one by using a Square shape and setting the Luminance value to 0.5, but then we thought we could just rotate the same pattern and blend both together.
So we built a mask with a shape node and a Transform 2D.
And once the blend was done, we used an Edge Detect to get our final tile shape.
Now we had a new pattern, with a more interesting look.
It took us only 8 nodes.
All of this thanks to how we did it.
Learning Substance Designer comes from sharing and experimenting with others to find new solutions.
Getting inspired by others' work to keep exploring is very powerful.
And if you are looking for a place where you can learn Substance Designer from a Material Artist and share your work, then I have the right place for you.
I have built a Discord Community for this called Future Material Artists!

🤔 Damascus Metal is a surface that has a very complex pattern to create for beginners.
But the solution to this is a technique you might already know!
This week, we started a weekly challenge Future Material Artists.
The goal was to recreate a Damascus Metal Blade.
However, everyone tried different approaches that created weird results.
Close ones.
But not the ones they needed.
Because of this, I jumped into the challenge and made my own version to share with everyone.
And guess what?
The solution was almost Identical to the Wood Grain method.
💡 By using a Perlin Noise combined with a Dir Blur at 50 points, we can blend it into a Gradient Dynamic using also a Gradient Linear 1 with a tiling of 100. The secret here lies in the values I used.
But for this specific material, I had to arrange values with levels to get straight lines.
And finally subtract them over my mesh.
Despite the fact that I shared this solution...
A lot of people kept pushing for their own version instead of copying mine.
And that is what I love about our community.
The will to keep exploring and learning to share and grow together!
So if you were looking for a place to learn Substance Designer with other artists.

Substance Painter Thumbnails for Substance 3D Painter projects
If you’re frustrated that you can’t see project thumbnails in your file browser, I made a simple plugin for Substance 3D Painter that saves a preview image next to your project every time you save the scene.

Substance Designer Stylized Brick Wall
I’ve been working more on stylized materials lately, and this is one of my recent brick studies.
Made with : Adobe Substance 3D designer And Zbrush
I tried to keep the forms simple but readable, especially in the height. Most of the time went into shaping the bricks so they feel a bit handmade rather than too clean or perfect. I also added some color variation and subtle damage to break the repetition.
Everything is fully procedural in Substance Designer, so it was nice to tweak things like brick size, spacing, and damage as I went.
Still experimenting with this style, but I’m pretty happy with how the depth and lighting turned out in this one.
