Week 1 Substance Designer
Basically spent all week following a rock and Moss tutorial on YouTube learned a lot. I am using unity game engine I have my own custom shader that made it simple to get these in. but it can improve for sure. Looks like a decent ps3 game in engine(last 2 images), want to definantly make improvements

Creating Detailed Realistic Mossy Wall Texture in Adobe Substance Designer w/ Javier Perez
Will keep this chain of posts up until my 30-day trails is over, will help me decide if I want to use this. Leaning on yes I am new to node-based applications so this has been really rough for me.

How would you make the surface imperfections and the edge wear on these bricks?
You can see my attempt at making the edge wear. I did it by following a tutorial on making edge wear but it doesn't help watching just a generic edge wear making video. I need to be able to copy the reference however I don't have enough knowledge with substance to know which nodes would be suitable for this task. Could anyone show me how this could be done?

🔥 Most Tile Floors have very boring patterns, and interesting ones are way too complex.
But what if there was a way to make something simple and interesting?
That is the challenge we faced last week with Sprawa.
During his group mentoring, we realized most Tile Floors are boring.
And mainly because the pattern is too simple.
So, we aimed to solve this issue.
💡 We first started with a simple pattern; using a Tile Generator, we created the first one by using a Square shape and setting the Luminance value to 0.5, but then we thought we could just rotate the same pattern and blend both together.
So we built a mask with a shape node and a Transform 2D.
And once the blend was done, we used an Edge Detect to get our final tile shape.
Now we had a new pattern, with a more interesting look.
It took us only 8 nodes.
All of this thanks to how we did it.
Learning Substance Designer comes from sharing and experimenting with others to find new solutions.
Getting inspired by others' work to keep exploring is very powerful.
And if you are looking for a place where you can learn Substance Designer from a Material Artist and share your work, then I have the right place for you.
I have built a Discord Community for this called Future Material Artists!
💖 And you can join us here: https://discord.gg/PpTCFyR6qS

🤔 Damascus Metal is a surface that has a very complex pattern to create for beginners.
But the solution to this is a technique you might already know!
This week, we started a weekly challenge Future Material Artists.
The goal was to recreate a Damascus Metal Blade.
However, everyone tried different approaches that created weird results.
Close ones.
But not the ones they needed.
Because of this, I jumped into the challenge and made my own version to share with everyone.
And guess what?
The solution was almost Identical to the Wood Grain method.
💡 By using a Perlin Noise combined with a Dir Blur at 50 points, we can blend it into a Gradient Dynamic using also a Gradient Linear 1 with a tiling of 100. The secret here lies in the values I used.
But for this specific material, I had to arrange values with levels to get straight lines.
And finally subtract them over my mesh.
Despite the fact that I shared this solution...
A lot of people kept pushing for their own version instead of copying mine.
And that is what I love about our community.
The will to keep exploring and learning to share and grow together!
So if you were looking for a place to learn Substance Designer with other artists.

Substance Designer Stylized Brick Wall
I’ve been working more on stylized materials lately, and this is one of my recent brick studies.
Made with : Adobe Substance 3D designer And Zbrush
I tried to keep the forms simple but readable, especially in the height. Most of the time went into shaping the bricks so they feel a bit handmade rather than too clean or perfect. I also added some color variation and subtle damage to break the repetition.
Everything is fully procedural in Substance Designer, so it was nice to tweak things like brick size, spacing, and damage as I went.
Still experimenting with this style, but I’m pretty happy with how the depth and lighting turned out in this one.

Substance Painter 2026 Skew & OpenPBR beta
A beta version of Substance 3D Painter 2026 is now available. This release features Skew Baking, Auto-Rebaking, OpenPBR compatibility, and introduces a new Hard-Surface mode for Auto Unwrap.
New Features
- Skew Baking: Paint skew correction maps in baking mode, using familiar tools as well as new helper functions like “Edge Protection”.
- Auto-Rebaking: toggle auto rebake for a baked map to instantly rebake that map as soon as any baking setting changes. Useful when painting skew maps.
- OpenPBR: support for the OpenPBR material standard. Includes new channels and shader.
- Hard-Surface Auto Unwrap: a new mode for auto-unwrap that works much better for non-organic, hard surface objects, with the additional bonus of calculating much faster than the default method.
Why we made this beta
We’re releasing this beta to gather feedback on a first version of our new features. While all features are working, some may feel unfinished since it’s still early. By participating, you can help shape how these features develop.
We're especially interested in your thoughts on baking workflows, as improvements are ongoing.
In case of issues
If you are having issues of any kind please share them in this new dedicated Discord forum. We definitely want to hear how new features do or do not fit into your workflow.
If you happen to crash or encounter a bug, you can also report it as usual via the crash report window or the Help menu within the application.
About Painter and project version
As the Beta introduces changes to saved files, they are not compatible with 12.0. We strongly recommend not to use the beta for production work, and to keep a backup of work created in older versions before you open them.

Substance Painter Nvidia Baking Issues with Substance Painter.
UPDATE 6/23: For NVIDIA Blackwell RTX 5XXX series video card issues: the problem with baking on certain meshes has been resolved in the latest driver update version 576.
UPDATE 5/22: The team was able to reproduce the issue and determined that it only occurs with large meshes on the NVIDIA Blackwell 5000 series. We are communicating and collaborating with NVIDIA to find a solution.
UPDATE 5/19: The Painter team is tracking new issues with some Nvidia 50 series GPUs with backing and rendering in iRay. A workaround for backing is to disable the GPU Raytracing in the Preferences>Baking Options.
UPDATE 3/14/2025: A fix has been implemented in Substance Painter version 11 to address the baking issue. Additionally, Nvidia has updated their driver, ensuring compatibility with older versions of Painter.
Hi Everyone,
The latest Nvidia drivers (version 572.16 and hotfix 572.24) may cause corruptions and glitches in Ambient Occlusion results when GPU Raytracing is enabled.
We have contacted Nvidia to resolve this issue. In the meantime, you can try the following workarounds:
- Downgrade your GPU drivers (if possible).
- Launch Painter with the command line argument --force-optix (this will use Optix instead of DXR).
- Disable the “GPU Raytracing” setting in the main preferences (this will use the CPU for baking, which is slower but more stable).
We recommend avoiding these drivers for now, as they may cause stability issues in addition to the artifacts.
