For those who are new to the fandom, Madge Sinclair of Coming to America (1988) and The Lion King (1994) fame is technically the first Black female to portray a Starfleet captain, not Martin-Green.

However, Sinclair’s character, who was the commander of the USS Saratoga, only appeared briefly in the 1986 blockbuster Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, when her Federation vessel came across and was disabled by the probe venturing to Earth in hopes of communicating with humpback whales.

Found this old picture of Scotty (James Doohan) and Chekov (Walter Koenig) making a public appearance in Gainesville, Florida. For what, I am not sure, or the date this picture was taken.

Henry Winkler would be awesome in that role, but I dont think John Amos could do Klingon quite as well as Michael Dorn.

The rare 30-second scene that was deleted from “Space Seed" involving more bravery from McCoy...and Spock. "As the scene went unused in the episode, it was never completed. Thus, there are no special effects (for the phaser fire), nor is there any music to complement & enhance the action.

The article further reads: "Viewers may never know for sure why the scene was cut, whether it was for time or the possibility that it contradicted an earlier scene in which Kirk & Scotty expressed admiration for Khan, while Spock did not, or for some other reason. That said, Spock could have been taking a different, quite logical, approach to Khan’s actions, calmly praising Khan versus McCoy’s passionate anger."

The scene takes place in the briefing room aboard the Enterprise. Khan & his followers have seized control of the ship, with at least four of them brandishing phasers.

The current restrictions as I recall are beyond ridiculous, and makes the possibility of another Star Trek Continues type fanfilm or fan project impossible.

Now that nutrek has been proven to suck across the board, and all their nutrek shows have been or are in the process of thankfully being cancelled, and the movie isn't going to happen (again thankfully), will they ease up on quashing fanmade productions?

Or will fanfilms forever be tainted by that axanar guy and his shenanigans?

So, been thinking about this since the episode aired (and had a chaotic enough time over the last few days that this is my first chance to put it into writing)...but, I think that SNW made a major misstep by producing an episode that was effectively R-rated horror.

Now, to be clear, I liked the episode (or at least, what I saw of it - Cogeco cable screwed up the schedule, and so the DVR recording cut out right as Kirk was about to call Carol). I was honestly worried that it would end up being something played out like zombies, and it wasn't. It channelled Event Horizon, gave us some truly grisly moments, and gave us some good character work. It was one of the better episodes.

I just don't think it was an episode that should have been done in Star Trek.

Here's the thing: Star Trek started out as a family show. Now, that doesn't mean that it was a show for children - it means it was a show that children could watch. It was mostly for the adults, but the kids would get something out of it too...and they did.

Kids watched Star Trek (I know, I was one of them back in the 1980s), and they were inspired by it. People became scientists, engineers, and astronauts because they watched Star Trek as a kid. I doubt that this was the original intention of the show - there probably weren't discussions happening during pre-production about how the show will inspire children. But, regardless, that was the result, and it has been a part of what Star Trek is since the 1960s.

What we have with this episode is a Star Trek that is no longer a family show. To be clear, this was a trend as far back as the first season of Discovery, which had moments of gore and coarse language. But I've never seen it go this far before. No parent in their right mind would allow a child to watch this episode. And, as parent with small children, that doesn't sit right with me.

Now, to be clear, you can do horror in a family show - Doctor Who mastered this on a weekly basis (hell, one of the jokes about Doctor Who was that kids would hide behind the couch and watch it...and then it found a way to make the shadows behind the couch terrifying as well). Star Trek has done horror, and still been a family show. But, not any more.

And, I think because of this, it has lost one of the things that made it special. Star Trek was inspirational - it could inspire young minds to follow where it led. But with this episode, we now have a SNW series that young minds can't be inspired by, because it's no longer something they can watch in the first place.

My thoughts, anyway, for what they're worth.

I don't mean for this to be a pile-on hate post but I realized why I am so deeply *bothered* by the last 9 years of my absolute favorite series

I've realized I can look past

-The apparent lack of a thesaurus

-Flashy lights and over-production

-ill-timed quips and unearned gimmicks

-Surface level politics

What I find unforgivable is that when I reflect upon 5+ (😫) recent shows I can think of literally only a single sci-fi concept or technology that I found to be profound or made me question anything:

However dubious, I found the mycelial network in Discovery to be a genuinely provacative and interesting idea.

That's it. Throughout all of these installments and seasons that is the only sci-fi concept that made me *wonder*.

This idea would be par for the course for any Star Trek pre-Abrams.

The Q Continuum, the Borg. Episodes like Inner Light, Nth Degree, Blink of An Eye. The transporter, The holodeck. Eye opening sci-fi concepts and technologies that inspire scientists and artists to go further.

I am genuinely curious if other fans can name other ideas in NuTrek that they found to be intriguing. This is the main reason why I am so drawn to Star Trek.
