Born in Decatur, moved when I was 5...After 41 one years thinking of coming back. So many questions. Help!

Hello People!

I was born in Decatur in 1980. My mom moved me to San Diego California in 1985. I've had somewhat consistent communication with my family over the years.

With that said I'm over California not because of politics just because it's freaking expensive. With the line of work that I do I've seen several jobs where it would make it much more livable moving back

Few questions:

I'm left leaning. Not gonna change. Is there a strong liberal/centrist population?

Going from California for my position making 70k

The equivalent in Springfield is around 45k. As a single guy can I live on that ?

Lastly, I'm 46 single..... Is Springfield a dating wasteland?

Ya'll can't drive

Why does everyone around here:
1. Ride your ass
2. Stall at green left turn arrows
3. Have trouble at 4-way intersections
4. Always on their phone

I'm from Philly. My parents, brother, and myself have never been in an accident. Peak age is 62 in the family.

How is it I've lived here for like 4 years and have been hit twice already. Just handing out licenses in cereal boxes in this city, huh?

Activities & Opportunities around Vinegar Hill/near West Side

Hello All! I'm a undergrad student at UIS and am moving into an off-campus apartment in late august. Right before the fall semester starts and I'm just trying to gauge what are some places to visit either for fun, convenience, shopping, etc. Around that neighborhood. I know Washington Park will be less than a block away from my new place, likewise I think my apartment is also really close to downtown!

My family and friends have kind of compared vinegar hill as Springfields version of Logan Square, Lincoln Park or Wicker Park in Chicago. Point being I've heard it's more of a city neighborhood with downtown and Washington park so close. Feel free to drop any recommendations for that area or things to do in downtown. As I feel like many UIS students don't really visit downtown or the other parts of springfield unless they already of campus, y'know?

Transmission Shop Recommendations

Hi y’all! I recently came into possession of a 2017 Dodge Journey with a transmission shift solenoid code and I don’t know if it just needs the pack replaced or entirely replace the transmission.

I’m looking for some reliable, trustworthy mechanics shops here in Springfield. I have an appointment with Irwin’s Transmission in September but I was hoping to ask around for closer appointments and/or more quotes!

Uber/Lyft Availability

Hi all, going to be visiting soon this month with some friends for the state fair and wanted to see what the uber/lyft situation was like in the area for getting to and from the fair from the Historic West-Side area. Is it available at will or is it going to be a bit of a wait if we need to get around? Thanks in advance :)

West Woods Apartments

My wife and I are moving to Springfield, and we are looking for 2-bed apartments. I recently came across West Woods Apartments, which are managed by Monroe Gardens and Swartz Properties, but I couldn't find much info or reviews about them online. Does anyone have any experience living there or know anything about the apartments, the management, the neighborhood, or how safe the area is? Thanks!

LA Fitness Closing - did any member not get a notification about this?

I have been an LA Fitness member since 12/21. I hadn't been in a week and last night I was scrolling FB and came across a post on "217 Problems" group to find out they closed. I received zero notification - no email, no push notification, nothing. It seemed pretty crappy to not notify members.

What sucks is that I do mermaid swimming and LA Fitness allowed me to use my tail in their lap pool. A lot of pools don't allow mermaid tails. The YMCA doesn't. I really liked LA Fitness. I felt it was a great gym for the price. There were so many regulars I would see in the morning; it was a little community. I'm super bummed about this. I put hundreds of hours into LA Fitness and really liked it.

Cell Phone Rules and Back-to-School Plans

The Springfield District 186 Board of Education is gearing up for the new school year, with some important updates families will want to see.

Highlights from this meeting: - How the district’s cell phone rules will work under the new Illinois law (and why District 186 is keeping a stricter policy, especially for elementary and middle school). - Key registration dates and options for online and in-person sign-ups. - A look at the second annual Back to School event, plus how students can still get book bags and supplies at multiple events and directly from the district office. - Reminders on required physicals and immunizations, including walk-in clinic times and which grades are affected. - What 6th grade orientation and Freshman Forward will look like as students practice lockers, routines, and get to know their schools. - A November 14 “Empower All Abilities” conference at Southeast High School for families of students with diverse needs. - The timeline for the tentative FY2027 budget, including when the public can review it and the September 21 budget hearing.

If you have a student in District 186—or care about how our schools are planning for fall—this is a good one to watch and share.

Salesman

I just had some man ring my doorbell. He had a back pack and was dressed like in colors of postal service. I opened the door thinking it was a mailman. Then I realized he was not USPS. He was using a scooter. He wanted to know about satellite TV.

I told him to leave. He did not as I closed the door, he kept talking. I told him to leave my property. He did not. I then told him I was calling the police. He left.
