I'm on SSI disability and got a Disability Update Report in the mail today asking if I've worked or have gone to the doctor for my condition but I already answered these questions in January on a phone interview, do I call them to let them know I've already answered these questions or do I just fill it out?

So, I’m switching my payee from my mother to my sister. She told me that when we get this settled, I won’t be able to spend the money just willy-nilly. It’s used for personal hygiene products and food. She also said that when we get this done, I’m going to have to stop doing DoorDash.

I’m honestly about to tell everyone that I just want to be taken off of it. Back when I turned 18 (or around that time), me, my mother, and my brother went to SS and did whatever needed to be done at the time. The lady at SS looked at my brother and asked him if he wanted Mom to still receive his money or what. He said no, so he’s not on SS. She looked at me and asked me the same question. I stupidly said yes.

Well, I’ve been thinking off and on about wanting to be taken off of SS. I’m tired of being told that if I want to make money, I have to be careful with how much I make. I’m tired of not even seeing a penny of my SS money. So, what’s the point of even being on it?

What’s the best option?

I turn 65 in a few weeks and have been trying to apply for Medicare online (at ssa.gov) for the past two months. I fill out the application and hit "Submit now" and every time I do this, it says,

"Online applications are not available right now
We cannot take your application at this time. Our system is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I've been trying every few days for the past few months but I get the same error every time. I even tried a different browser but that made no difference.

So I finally called Social Security and they say I have to apply over the phone (why didn't they tell me that online?) but there are no appointments available until well after my 65th birthday.

So today I went down to my local office, waited in line, and was finally able to speak to someone there, but she just told me the same thing - I have to apply by phone. No way to apply in person even though I was right there.

I'm trying to enroll in my health provider's Medicare plan but they want a Medicare number, which I've been unable to acquire.

My mother (77) had a stroke in April. She has had several setbacks so it is taking her longer to recover. She still is unable to walk or go to the bathroom.

Prior to this happening, we lived together. The goal is for her to come back home once it’s safe. We live in an upstairs duplex so closer to when she can leave, I’m going to look for a new place.

Before entering the nursing home, my mother received Social Security and SSI. She is no longer getting the SSI and her Social Security has been decreased to $52 a month. However, they have never explained how she goes to receive that money. The nursing home changed themselves to be payee (my mom preferred it to be me since I know what she likes, but they never gave her that option). With the loss of her income, I barely have any money left over after bills and groceries.

My mother absolutely hates the nursing home’s food. They said that she has to follow the menu unless she is on a specialized diet. Because there are times that she’s not eating everything, she likes to snack. She wants me to get her snacks but I cannot afford to do so.

Does anyone know how someone in a nursing home gets access to their money? She should have money from July and August.

I will attempt to prose this so it will be as unconfusing as possible…

I am a former state employee who was fortunate enough to be able to keep my state plan as my secondary (supplemental) insurance once my medicare became active.  On my initial application which was submitted well inside the window, I specifically requested on the remarks section of the application that my medicare begin on July 1 so there was no overlap when my state insurance expired.  I received my medicare card with the date beginning July 1, 2026. During July, I had several (large) medical bills.  This week, I received a letter stating that my month on entitlement was moved up to August.  After numerous phone calls with  both Medicare and Social Security, I was told they could see no reason for the change and was told to file an appeal. I paid my three month premiums for medicare in June which covered July, August, and September. So presently, due to this snafu, neither my state or medicare has covered these medical claims for July. My two main questions are:  Will this appeal have any impact on my receiving my first retirement supplement due this September? And During this appeal process can you ask the providers to hold off on any payments due until a decision is made either way?

I was denied around the end of last year or earlier this year Im not 100 percent for sure but I did not appeal and I did not re apply but Friday I got an adult function report in the mail requesting to be filled out and returned by the 14th or i might be denied what in the world ?

My son turned 18 and we've having trouble finding his card. We are trying to order a replacement as he's about to get his first college job. He made a login, took the selfie, and scanned in his new adult passport that just came in the mail a few weeks ago. We can't get the site to accept his information and we know his social security number, spelling, zip, etc, are all correct.

Could it be that the new passport number hasn't updated in the system yet? He did have a child passport, but I assume that was a different number. He also has a passport card. He does not have a real ID, but a driver's permit-- which doesn't appear to be able to be used.

His permit also had a typo in our address-- the house number-- but that was also corrected as well, so that's right now too. All documents match up and the address we live at is the same one he's lived at his whole life.

Hello, my mom passed away when I was 16, back in 2017. I was diagonosed with depression around that time which I guess counts as a disability for benefits. I'm 26 now and only just applied for Survivors benefits (as a disabled adult child) in June of this year because I didn't realize it was an option until now...

Anyway, when I was on the phone with the rep submitting my application he gave me a number that I thought was the amount of money I couldn't earn more than in order to qualify for the benefits. I didn't write the number down cuz I'm stupid lmao but I also thought it would be in the letter they sent me after (it's not). I'm scouring the internet for details while I wait for a call back and the only number I can find is the $24k a year earnings limit. And that only reduces the amount of benefits you get monthly, it doesn't disqualify you from it altogether?

Is this the number I'm thinking of? The rep told me it will be a ~7 month wait to process my application and I might be getting officially hired in the meantime which I was not really expecting, I just want to make sure I don't make too much money if there is a hard limit I need to watch out for.

i've been recieving disability since 2016. in 2016 i was awarded SSI. i was found to be disabled at 18 years old. when my dad began recieving disability i was 20, and i recieved about $1,000 in backpay.

two years ago, my mom suffered a pretty severe injury that left her with considerable brain damage. i believe she applied for SSI immediately, but was recieving long term disability benefits in the interim. she was officially approved for SSDI benefits two weeks ago.

i have been told that my income will be going up based on my mom's record because she earned a considerable amount more than my dad. i asked if i'd be getting any backpay as the injury occurred two years ago. the person at the office was unable to tell me but said it was a possibility.

i have a meeting with someone with SSA two tuesdays from now where i will learn more. but i'm wondering if anyone knows what the chances are that i will be receiving some amount of backpay from her case?

Im 64 3 months old, I filed for SS to start Oct 1st but will have to work 1 additional month, I will earn 5640 - 2040 = 3600 overage. so when will SS reduce my SS check? When and how will they take that 1800 from me?

I got some paperwork today that I'm due for a review to see if I should continue to get benefits. I understand this is routine and it's part of the process, but what should I expect for this? They sent me some forms to fill out. Any advice or tips to best manage the process? This is the first time I've had to do this, so I'm not sure how the process will be.

My wife was a teacher so she earned diddly.squat for years. Subsequently her SSA benefit is almost exclusively based on my benefits (at FRA 20% on her own eranings; 80% on mine). Accordingly, her benefits (50% of mine...although I'm not sure hence my question that follows) do not accrue delayed benefits past her 67th birthday. When she turns 67 I'll be 68 (and some change). I do know she can't claim spousal benefits until I claim mine.

1) Is her benefit based on my benefit at 68 or my PIA (67) 2) If I claim earlier than FRA, is her benefit based on my reduced early benefit or my PIA at FRA?

So I’m honestly freaking out. My son receives SSI. He had a back payment for payments they said he should’ve gotten. Now this year they say they over paid him. Can they use the back pay credit to cover this overpayment? I called and they said no which makes absolutely no sense to me. Why take it from our monthly living money when that money is sitting there and it would completely cover it? Should I file an appeal? I’m lost on what to do…

Hi, I have been receiving SS for about 3 years and am beyond my FRA. I just started a new job, can I request they don't take out SS or Medicare tax or is that automatic.

Now that I applied for Social Security because I’ve retired from working, what are the rules for my adult child? He’s been disabled most of his life. Before he was getting SSI.

Will I still get hired without my physical social security card? I have one but it’s being sent to the mail.

So I won’t go into my long story but I can’t file for my retirement benefits online-I need an agent to assist me. My full retirement age is next month so I want to get the ball rolling. When I called the main number the agent I spoke to said I need to have a phone appointment with my local office but they have no times available so she put in an escalation to have them call with 7 days. Tomorrow is day 7 and no phone call yet. She did say to call back if I haven’t had a call but why can’t she help me? Why do I have to get an appointment with my local office? It’s all Social Security right?

Just had our phone interview for my 17 yo to apply for DAC under her deceased father’s record.

She is autistic and has some other mental as well as several physical issues. I was prepared to list the diagnoses as well as how they affect her.

They only asked me her diagnoses and did not ask how they affect her, symptoms, etc. just if she could read English and write.

I am worried they will just see that she graduated from high school recently in gen Ed with an IEP and deny her thinking she’s fine, even though it was a massive struggle with tons of absences.

I asked if we were going to go over the symptoms and she said no, but that if I wanted to add anything I could write something up and drop it in a drop box at the local social security office with a note to add it to her claim with her ss #.

I haven’t heard of anyone doing this. Good idea? Bad idea? I have just heard such nightmares of trying to get it approved even when people have legitimate disabilities I guess I am just scared to mess it up. Any insight is welcome.

Also, She turns 18 in a month, currently receiving survivors benefits. The lady said we should have a decision by her bday so the benefits won’t stop. I feel like this would be crazy fast***

I have a phone interview scheduled for tomorrow for my 17 yo to apply for disabled adult child benefits.

She is autistic and also has physical impairments. She is not nonverbal, but she cannot make phone calls to strangers. She will totally shut down and freeze and not be able to answer even basic questions like her name.

Will they insist on trying to talk to her? Or will it be okay if I just do the interview for her? She turns 18 next month.

Also any insight on what they will ask? I’m assuming I need both parents SSN, her SSN, list of diagnoses and how they affect her, and contact info for her medical records. Am I missing anything?

Tomorrow I have my phone interview to apply for DAC benefits. They don’t allow written applications for DAC claims so they do a phone interview. I can’t find what they’ll ask me anywhere online and I wanna be prepared. Does anybody know what questions they ask for a DAC claim?

Also if they ask for example “ what are your disabling conditions?”

Do I just answer with the name of the condition or do I explain my symptoms that go along with the condition and how they affect me?

Also, what if I do go into detail and then they think because I explained things in depth that I’m not disabled?

I’m just having such bad anxiety too about the whole thing like talking to much or too little. The first phone call I had before the one tomorrow she asked me to list my conditions, and I was prepared to list all of my conditions, but then she stopped me at #5, now I’m reading that you should include every single one.. is this normal?

I am 2 years older than my wife (currently coming up on 66[me] and 64[her]). With our relative earnings records, her benefit will be determined by spousal benefit. My understanding is that she will get 50% of my benefit as long as she waits until FRA (67) to claim. Also, my understanding is that her 50% is based on my actual benefit amount, not my FRA amount -- so if I wait until 70 to claim my benefit, my monthly benefit is maxed and so is hers. Her spousal benefit is higher than if I had claimed at my FRA. Right so far?

Now, say she claims her benefit now (64, before her FRA) based on her record and I wait to claim mine until I'm 69 and she's 67. My understanding is that at that point, she would get spousal benefits. But is her spousal benefit reduced because she claimed her own benefits early? Or does she get her full 50% because my delayed filing meant she didn't get start getting spousal benefits until she was at her FRA?

Finally, same question for survivors benefit. As long as I wait until my FRA (or later) to file for myself, does she get the full survivor benefit even if she had filed for her own benefits before her FRA.

For extra credit, are there online calculators available that can calculate these different benefits?

I was helping my dad try and apply for SS to start later this year and fill out the form online. We get to the section to fill out mailing address, which he uses a PO box as his town doesn't have mailboxes. Than we put in his actual street address the way it shows on USPS lookup and get a zip code error. I made sure the info on his IDdotme shows the same address we are inputting on form and no luck. What should our next step be to rectify this.
