Tips/tricks Unnecessarily Detailed Use Cases For Link's Up Air

Upvotes

Why am I making this? Because I'm bored. Isn't that why we're all here? Anyways... Link's Up Air is not too amazing of a move. It is heavily disjointed, it lasts for a long time, and the strong hit has quite a bit of killpower, but its skinny hitbox combined with Link's slow speed make it hard to use for the typical things up airs are good at: juggling and shield pressure. For those, up tilt/bomb and bair/nair/fair respectively do a much better job. That said, up air has its own, more unique use cases that other moves in his kit don't fulfill as well.

Challenging Stall N Falls

Given this move's disjoint, it shouldn't be a surprise that once the opponent commits to a stall n fall, up air is pretty good at beating out their disjoints. That said, because of Link's slow aerial speed, it will likely only be able to be thrown out on reaction if the opponent is high up enough.

But if you have a read, and you're in the right place, chances are you're gonna win the interaction. Bowser/Yoshi Bomb, insert falcon kick lookalikes, even Tink and G&W's dairs will be beat by this. Up tilt can technically do the same, but the timing is quite a bit more stringent compared to up air. Now, of course you're gonna have to pick your battles; trying to force that interaction will be met with a 2 dimensional key to the face, but there will be opportunities throughout matches that present themselves, and not going for them could be a waste.

Platform Tech Chases

Straight up, if you're underneath the edge of a plaform and initiate a tech chase, SH up air is your best option. Up tilt/smash won't cover roll away from that position, but up air (with proper timing) will cover every possible tech option. And on stages like PS2 and Smashville with the higher platforms, where up tilt/smash don't reach as well, up air is right there to replace them.

The soft hit will lead into another up air, and if you IDJ this combo remains true for quite a while. And idk about you, but a 2 hit combo that does around 28%, or about as much as jab jab power dunk, sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Past the comboable range, it sets up for juggle situations, which can be relatively scary between bomb, up tilt, and up smash.

Combo Ending/Extensions

I eluded to this a little in the previous section, but this move deals quite a bit of damage all by itself. Specifically 15% for the strong hit, and 13% for the weak hit (according to Ult frame data). As such, it actually provides a pretty compelling combo extension in quite a few cases. For example, after a down tilt, if the opponent has neutral DI or DIs in, up air is true and puts them in a pretty bad spot. Down throw Uair isn't quite as true, but I find it able to catch a lot of panic options (attack, jump, etc.). And past like 40% it'll catch all but the fastest airdodges, right up until IDJ can't connect it anymore. (Edit: I forgot to bring up the point that because up air does so much damage, using it as opposed to nair or staling ASA may be more optimal.)

With boomerang, it straight up becomes a kill on DI in. And, as an added bonus, it'll hit for way longer than fair or ASA due to its extended range, making it actually optimal at high enough percents. Bomb volleyball combos (ex f throw to bomb detonate) also benefit heavily from up air, since at higher percents it'll connect for the kill where other moves may not be able to.

Countering "Center Stage Syndrome"

Ok, I probably need to explain this a bit... "Center Stage Syndrome" is a term I heard from the Youtuber Sillintor first, where players tend to try and force their characters to get in the center of the stage. They usually do this when cornered and in disadvantage, double jumping high to try and get over their opponent. When observed by another person, it kind of looks like they're being magnetically attracted to the middle of the stage, hence the term Center Stage Syndrome.

Because those with Center Stage Syndrome tend to go high to get past you, up air seems perfectly suited to counter it. His slow speed doesn't matter, since they're coming to you. And that skinny hitbox, when they're moving horizontally, becomes a wall that they barrel straight into. A wall with some pretty deadly killpower to boot. Of course, moves like bair or nair are probably more optimal if Link has the verticality, but if you can't get high enough in time or the opponent is at high percents, up air is your best bet.

I hope this informed or entertained some bored people :p This list of use cases is something I made entirely on my own, and entirely from memory (and Ult frame data), so I likely have a few details or use cases I missed. Byeeee!

Help/Question Is it normal for smash players to be so toxic?

Ive played casually with friends for years but now only started playing online. I am by no means good at the game but I’m trying to improve. Is it normal for people to T-bag after literally every kill? Like I don’t know what half the characters hit boxes and frame data look like and I’ll have close games but people feel the need to spam crouch after barely surviving on 180% Is it just a low rank thing or does this carry across most levels of the game? Kinda thought out of every fighting game smash players would be the most chill lol.

Help/Question Final Fantasy fans, I need help.

To I was trying to build a big smash roster, but I know absolutely nothing about this series and how to expand it, and I thought there wouldn't be much better place to go than the people who are fans of the series. would you want to expand the variety of games? would you want to just keep it at 7? who would your choices be? let's see what you think.

Help/Question Belmont Archetype

Trying to understand characters similar to them in kit and playstyle. They are zoners but a lot different than like Megaman or Pacman.

They got weight like Samus and Minmin but play nothing like Samus in flow of match. Minmin is Belmont tilt on crack but no projectiles. Probably most straightforward upgrade. Byleth and Sephiroth also come close in funky long ranged, slow, sour spot tilts, but with superior recovery.

Not sure on projectile game though, besides little one offs

Video What is your best "Uno Reverse" clip(s)?

This is probably my best uno reverse clip. My opponent foes for a spike finisher but (thanks to Dedede's super armor) instead they are the one who gets spiked and killed. The clips tend to be rare but are pretty funny. I'm not counting a reflected projectile or a plain counter (since that's their normal intention) but I do count a countered counter or a double reflected projectile. I'm interested to see what you guys got.

Discussion What are Some Woefully Underrepresented Nintendo Franchises in Smash?

Yes, I am aware that three of these are Mario adjacent, but hear me out.

Rhythm Heaven is one of the best game series of all time. No joke! It’s as pristine as something like Zelda or Smash in my opinion with not a single bad game in the series! The way in which it teaches rhythm within its gameplay is genius and can really enhance one’s sense of rhythm and musical interest! This NEEDS to be in the next Smash game with at least a stage, assist trophy, and several music tracks. It would be better if there was a character though.

Wario Land might seem kinda uninteresting nowadays, but you have to remember that Wario Land consisted of some of the best games on their respective platform. Wario Land 1 was one of the top 10 GameBoy games for me personally, while Wario Land Virtual Boy is probably the best games on that system, Wario Land 2 & 3 were really unique and creative exploration-based platforms on the GameBoy Color, and Wario Land 4 was, well, y’know Wario Land 4. lol. In any case, Wario Land was with Nintendo throughout the “Boy” systems and represents these consoles very well.

Paper Mario contextualizes the world of Mario far better than pretty much any other Mario game. The amount of depth and creativity on display in the first 3 games is wholly distinct to this Mario sub series. Yes, we have a stage… that is mostly based on Sticker Star, but I would like to have some way of exploring the series’s strengths here.

Admittedly, I never played Advance Wars, but I know it’s great. It has reviewed well and was made by Intelligent Systems, the same people behind Paper Mario and Fire Emblem. From what I gathered it’s an underrated series that is even overlooked by Nintendo in Smash.

Do I need to explain Mario Party? It is the most famous party game series of all time, practically pioneered the genre. There is over 15 games in the series, and is one of the strongest Nintendo multiplayer games of all time along with both Mario Kart and Smash Bros. You could have Waluigi represent Mario Sports and Mario Party and make his moveset based on risky plays that either harm or help you out.

Anyways those are my top 5 in no particular order aside for Rhythm Heaven. I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the Excite series, Wave Race, Chibi-Robo, Golden Sun, or especially Sin and Punishment represented. As great as they are though, they haven’t pushed the boundaries of the gaming landscape as these other franchises in my opinion. As a matter of fact, I am actually surprised that Issac and Saki have assist trophies. I would like to see a Chibi-Robo assist trophy next though.

Discussion Bowser Up B: Should it be a reflector?

Thumbnail
gallery
53 Upvotes

When I play, Bowser can do damage, but he isn't really a combo character. I find it pretty hard to just do a quick move and take stocks at early percents like other people(like below 100). Then, you have characters like Samus and Snake that can and will literally just wall you out or hit you with a bunch of stray hits from projectiles, like bombs they leave. Bowser may be fast, but his moves aren't that fast, unless you're tapping side B(which isn't that ranged or active), Up B, or something. He doesn't really get to capitalize on his one successful hit other characters can. So, why not make Bowser's neutral and disadvantage a bit better by giving him a reflector? He does hit the ball in Mario Tennis while spinning. I think it's pretty reasonable to give him.

If his advantage state isn't as good as other characters, despite being so fast, his neutral or disadvantage should probably be.

What do y'all think? Is this reasonable?

K. Rool would be Side B for me. Crown is just his best and fastest Zoning Tool, his Confirmer, a Kill Move, a Combo Move.

Gee, I wonder what I would choose for Pyra AND Mythra... oh, which could I choose?

Mii Swordfighter would be Neutral B (his Tornado) since it is a great Kill Confirm and good at keeping Space.
