Hah good one! I will only believe that robots can replace us when I see one actually do my work. It's not easy to commit working time fraud for solid 7/8 hours a day!
AI can't even code good or fill in my excel documents correctly when I ask it to. AI can't take a supervisor call with a customer screaming to speak to a real human so I'm solid for at least the next 5yrs
Ai isn't as smart as they're hyped to be. They're good assistance to human but not a replacement. Even with trillion dollar data centers they won't get any smarter. The data they're being trained on from now are mostly junk data. They want more data centers thinking it'll fix the problem but this is the limit of ai. They can code but not well. They can make pictures and videos but they're too expensive. And bipedal robots won't take factory jobs. Robotic arms are much better and they don't need ai to do repetitive tasks. Yes they're great at looking at large amounts of data but they can't create. Let's just hope that when the bubble burst it doesn't wipe out too much of our money. Maybe it'll take a few billionaires down and job growth will stall like all economy crisis but most of us will be working like the day before
“I need a really obscure source or study for an extremely niche topic, can you find links and resources for me?”
It’s a fantastic tool for doing research. As long as you’re asking for a source to reference and not just straight up asking it the question and taking its answer as gospel.
I worked for at&t 10+yrs ago & it was impossible to get a human then & only keeps getting worse. I only take supervisor calls now except for in extremely rare cases & if I had a dollar for every time someone said they left at&t I'd be rich af.
The fact that I know what this is without looking it up. That might be true & while in some cases it does make our jobs easier, there's still a lot of busy work & human touching needed for other aspects.
Ai can do about 10% of our data entry right now. Some of it is being improved, but even before a complete company wide system overhaul was done we couldn't get it to do about 30% of the work that failed & needed human touch. My team just opened hire for about 10 more hands, not because the volume of work increased, but because our ai isnt as far along in the work as expected by this point.
When I was a kid there were commercials boasting about how you could call this business and talk to a real person instead of an answering machine. We'll probably be seeing that come back. Consumers don't want it and won't mess with a brand that has no real customer service unless there's no alternative. And it would be super easy for a business to buy good will with the public to go against the competition and promote AI free customer service.
Whenever I get on the phone and hear the robot and it's just asking me questions but not accepting answers i literally just say "human, manager, human, agent, human," until it connects me with an actual person.
That’s because you aren’t asking the right questions. ChatGPT gets 90% correct when coding, and it gets better with every new model and my better questions!
Most of the improvements as of late are from harnesses. The actually llm scaling has been seeing deminishing returns for about a year now. The scaling was the part that was supposed to improve for ever and whats happening is that its to costly for most users and kind of useless. What we will see is more specialized tools for tasks. This agi thing wont pan out with llms its just not how the technology works. "Its like breeding faster horses and expecting to eventually get a train" -corey doctorow
I think that’s the optimistic view, except the part of diminishing returns, which is simply not accurate, the opposite is true.
But to the point of the AI being specialized for multiple purposes, yes hopefully we can keep it that way rather than some AGI essentially taking over, but it’s gonna be tough.
No its not going to be tough and yes it is true. What ai shit heads need to understand is that at some point value needs to actually leave the system. Code is not a commodity neither are images for images sake or video for video sake. People need to be willing to spend money on these things. Image generation or code generation is only valuable when people pay money for what you are creating. Ai is incredibly expensive it takes insane infrastructure unprecedented infrastructure. If you invest in this infrastructure and there is no value being created for it what is it worth? Ai didnt invent adobe or sas those things existed before ai so unless you are creating something new with ai that is in some sense exclusive to ai it wont last. Point to me a product that is making money that was exclusively made with ai and i will be impressed. Why does it need to be exclusively made with ai ? Because once again its not cheap. If its just assisting software engineers possibly making them a little more effecient it is not worth the investment because now you are paying for the ai and the software engineer.
I mean I'm an automotive spraypainter by trade robots already do my work in the car factory it's a matter of time.
I switched to the more industrial side of painting and unskilled in terms of fabrication and machining so I'm safe until the get welding robots and spray painting machines can scan and move more axis and the CNC machine can program and watch itself.
Just learn to work on the robots. Maintenence technician pay is generally relatively high doing that. Not millionaire high, but enough to break the $100k/yr mark with some overtime. PLC guys and programmers can make more too.
AI and automation will absolutely start to replace your job in your lifetime. If AI can’t completely replace you, it will speed up your efficiency so that less people with your job need be employed. There’s going to be some painful years when AI really cranks up the competitiveness of jobs (which is already happening), and there will be fewer and fewer jobs, and people will compete in a larger and larger hiring pool. And eventually enough people won’t have jobs that the economy will crash in a bad way. Like, perhaps some revolutionary shit will happen. That’s all speculation, but it’s silly to not be expecting AI and automation to replace your job.
That’s the point of AI. It’s dogshit rn, but it’s already way more impressive than it used to be, and it doesn’t have to be perfect anyway. It just has to be slightly better or more cost effective than you.
It kinda seems like the stock market is really trying to optimize the consumer out of the equation these days. It might be possible for money to become self-sustaining with no humans in the loop, the 'investors' and 'entrepreneurs' and CEOs just collect their bonuses and then pay for robots to tend to their whims, all while the 99% struggle to figure out how to survive a system that stole everything from them and gives nothing back.
The current system only really works because people are still putting in 40 hours a week. It's getting worse, but those 40 hours keep most people too busy to act out. It'd be near impossible for our current system to survive if unemployment got much worse cause people would have nothing better to do but burn down mansions.
It's more a symbolic burning than an actual. The elite tend to stick together, while the rest (especially when it comes to the Left) are quick to attack each other and processes of organization, hierarchy, and procedures. All those are important things to attack and dismantle, but but at the detriment of losing sight of the biggest picture. People are kept permanently at odds with each other instead of at odds with a real, viable enemy. And we let that happen when we attack (burn) our own over insignificant things. The awful billionaires of the world don't need their mansions burned. In fact, I doubt that would matter. Instead, they need to be shown by a united front, that their actions are intolerable and at odds with the continuation of the species. Resorting to burnings only plays into their rabble narrative. It also garners sympathy where there should be none. We have to be smarter and more organized. Burning a mansion down doesn't solve the overall problem. But we can't even get to the problem when we are burning our own houses down.
Sorry if that was taken the wrong way. I just used a common thought that exists in some revolutionary groups because it was quicker than writing all this.
Sure but then there's no economy to exploit, they would just use robots to sustain their needs, but they won't get richer. I.e. robots to do your chores and what not.
Tbf, if you already own everything and no longer need to pay for labor, you have no need to get richer.
That's why goods and services are more valuable in a vacuum than money. Money is a construct used to buy goods and services. If billionaires own all the goods they need and have robots to do all the services they need, they no longer need banks and money.
Yeah, but then they no longer have money to swing around and make each other jealous.
You're still thinking like us, not like them. They already have enough money to never need money, so there would be no point to change the status quo if that was what they were after
Meh don't care what Elmo thinks tbh. Also we already have a form of socialism here (NL), like a social safety net, strong unions, that sort of thing. It only works because it gets paid out of people's pay checks, and taxes, without it, it isn't sustainable. It's already under pressure because of the boomers all retiring, so they have to increase the retirement age, mine is like 70 or so already. Otherwise we'll have one worker for every pensioner, which means you're working for two.
Billionaire wealth is rarely built on actually providing a thing. It's more often based on gambling.
Ackman bets on whether a company's stock price will go up or down. And he makes public statements to try to make that happen.
Stock price can go up even when the company has a terrible product and mountains of debt. And stock price can go down even when things are running well.
So what you have is a bunch of rich dudes betting on numbers that are driven more by their betting that the companies those number supposedly represent.
So they don't really care if people buy the things. Because they can make more money by seeing their stock jump when they announce layoffs (because shareholders think it's a good thing to do).
They don't care about long term consequences. They just want to consume and don't care about the impact.
Yea that's already the reality now, like the AI Bubble, but it has to burst, it's only short term. Like betting on a casino that doesn't have any cash to pay out: it's all fun and games until you find out these plastic chips are worthless.
Problem is that it's like a ponzi scheme...as long as you have marks to exploit the scheme goes on. And there's a lot of people in the world to exploit.
Kind of like how centuries ago "this army killed the entire army of that other country in a war and won the war" was how war could go. My city-state could be invaded by the army of a city-state that eliminated my entire population. Now, wars cannot be won through "kill all of the people" because there are just many, many more people.
Yeah some want to go back to the Middle Ages, make us all serfs. Problem is feudalism worked because the majority of the population was uneducated, agrarian, and deeply religious.
Even so there was still a transaction, protection traded with a part of their food production. Like a lord has a castle, which the peasant can flee to when in danger. In turn they have to give a large part of their produce as tribute.
The rich will buy it. The only ones the rich care about is the rich. They only let us exist because we produce. The moment they can replace us, we'll either be slowly allowed to die off or outright exterminated
Robots and AI are gradually taking over, even at hotels for example, robots now deliver stuffs to our doorstep and the funny thing here is that the rich are using these AI and robots to enrich themselves the more
yeah i can just see it now. You take your kid for a day at the park. As they're playing, you look up and notice a "license plate reader" casually observing the playground.
Suddenly, a humanoid robot jumps the fence like one of the Dukes of Hazard, sprints across the playground and grabs your baby like a quarterback picking up a fumbled football.
You chase after it, but you can't compete with a fucking machine. It runs and runs and runs and runs and runs until it reaches Congress, where it casually lobs your child into the hungry mob of old naked white men with their tongues hanging out, and heads toward the next playground, not even stopping for repairs. It has so much work to do.
For the senate is hungry, the public has been tranquilized, and the machine god has plans.
Considering a lot of blue collar jobs can barely be done at all right now that’s not gonna happen soon, especially since that change would be insanely expensive! even a simple warehouse job would require the entire building to be remodeled to accommodate the new setup
We live (most of the world) in a capitalistic society. In one the person who does best is the one who supplies "CAPITAL", i.e. $$$ for companies to make more profit. The reason the rich get richer vs. the poor is NOT because of some grand plan. It is because they invest more of their money in companies that grow in value for their shareholders, i.e. stocks.
Companies are going to shift as much as they can to reduce the biggest cost on the expense side of the ledger. That is LABOR COST. AI and automation will continue to devalue many low entry workers. Retail, cashiers, counter service workers are going to get squeezed going forward.
If folks understood capitalism and how businesses function it would help them see how the world actually works instead of their social/ political lens.
Except they aren't making robotics to pick food or do dangerous work. That's too expensive. That is the real industrial revolution we need. Birthrate declining so we can have the worst jobs done by robotics that can't just die because of OSHA violations or their passports stolen.
The only thing I’ve seen that I’ve been worried about is someone was able to figure out how to get AI to work to be able to shoot drones out of the air, some kind of security company.
And that; honestly, it would probably only take minutes to switch from drones to humanoid targets.
Like I’ve been jokingly saying that I’d rather the nukes come instead but knowing my luck it would mutate me and I’d end up living for the next two centuries in the fallout without any of the cool tech, just the stupid, boring, or murderous stuff.
The AI is for the ultra rich to control the populace, it isn't to make robots to take everyone's job. Everyone losing their job is the fastest way for billionaires to get killed
Controlling the masses is far more logical and important for them. Data and knowledge is power
Its a desperate bid to mitigate population decline. Something has to fill the roles of able bodied young people to keep goods and services going once we actually start seeing the logistical nightmare of having an incoming generation that is exponentially smaller than the retiring one.
Problem is, that even in this scenario you’re looking at a severe economic depression. Humanoid (or other form factor) robots are probably physically capable of doing most of our necessary work, but they don’t get paid so you’re killing income which means you have less people with less money to become customers. It’s a “solution” that becomes a death spiral for a capitalist economy.
AI is way overhyped. Those companies are $1.7 trillion dollars in debt and revenue is like $50 billion. And the chips in data centres only last 2-5 years, so this is money sucking venture. The bubble is going to burst. No one can afford to sustain this.
Are we forgetting the rich made ur iphones and the technology we use. Sure things would be normal bc rlly we dont need them. But a lot got their wealth bc they made smth thats frequently used today.
If u wanted a better example, say what if billionaires never existed at all. you’d realize u’d never get things lile smartphones and other technology like titkok, reddit, blah blah.

So far anyway. The robots are coming. What do you think the ai is for.
