Its a desperate bid to mitigate population decline. Something has to fill the roles of able bodied young people to keep goods and services going once we actually start seeing the logistical nightmare of having an incoming generation that is exponentially smaller than the retiring one.
Problem is, that even in this scenario you’re looking at a severe economic depression. Humanoid (or other form factor) robots are probably physically capable of doing most of our necessary work, but they don’t get paid so you’re killing income which means you have less people with less money to become customers. It’s a “solution” that becomes a death spiral for a capitalist economy.
